Just recently watched this, one of my favorites . Like the time loop .Reset and rewind . I think we all are all caught in a time loop.🙂 4 Movies to look forward to.

Andrew Pulrang

It's totally fair and expected to feel a bit dizzy about "The Inner Light." It's meant to be mind-blowing. And I think it IS best to not worry too much about the technicalities. That said, my interpretation is that the people in his "family" were real, and 1,000 years ago they created a kind of immersive video game program lasting 30+ years that would be played out in the mind of whoever found their probe. And if you think about it, it's not that impossible to imagine having a very vivid dream lasting only, say, a night's sleep in real time but feeling awfully close to experiencing a full lifetime within the dream. It's not all that far from some dreams we actually have, where it feels like a lot more time than it really was. The other notable thing about the story is the not so subtle environmental message -- where this very nice society just had a really hard time facing up to a very dire situation they couldn't really fix, and therefore in some ways actively tried to deny. On a separate note ... Since you skipped her episode, I have to know whether you know yet who Ensign Ro is. She was the navigator sitting next to Data on the bridge in "Cause And Effect." She can be identified by the distinctive wrinkles at the bridge of her nose, and the elaborate earring in one ear. Depending on which upcoming episodes get chosen for you, it might be good to know a little something about Ensign Ro. I personally love her character, her story, and the culture she comes from. Sorry this is so long. I love your Star Trek reactions SO MUCH!

Cassie, “The Inner Light” is the best TNG episode (IMHO) ever made I cry every time I watch it (including during your watch). I few years ago (2014-15) I met Morgan Gendel one of the writers of the story and I got a signed copy of the script, along with the unaired script of the sequel, but the best thing I got from him was a Ressikan flute which I will treasure for my entire life.

David Freese

I just watched your premiere and I love 2 of the 3 episodes. I remember Cause and Effect and Inner Light the most when I think of TNG. 2 Episodes hard to forget.

Shadowlord

BTW, Kamin's son in Inner Light was played by Daniel Stewart, Patrick Stewart's actual son.

Kyle Prince

OMG!! Inner light! I forgot about it until now! I'm so glad Cassie got to watch it! I hope she sees Relics. on Season 6. It will make her very very very happy! Don't spoil the surprise!!!!

Richard Ricketts

There's a dream phenomenon some people call it a life dream I had it once when I was young where I literally dreamed an entire lifetime where I got together with a woman we had children I raised them we had dog house the whole lot then I woke up and I cried for a whole day cause I felt that I had lost my wife and children I was sixteen still think about it sometimes now and I'm 40

Shad Kanyak

I’m super jealous you’re getting to experience this show for the first time. I was obsessed as a teenager. Commercials, one episode per week, months long wait after cliffhangers, having to record on VHS so I didn’t miss the episode. Life was hard in the 90’s!

Stick Figure Studios

Nothing really to add to what has been said already about these episodes... except perhaps an interesting bit of trivia: the melody the Picard plays on the flute in "Inner Light" was re-used (and combined with Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek theme) as the main theme song for the new series PICARD.

Matt O'Keefe

I hate that you kind of feel that the rest of the shoe will be a let down. There are going to be more great episodes coming and yes a few not so great. Every episodic show has them. You wull expierence more highs.

Christopher Bruno

I love watching your TNG episodes. It’s a great opportunity for me to revisit a show I loved while hitting the highlights. I hope you finish TNG, and then watching the next 3 TNG movies (one is great, two are not). And then watch Star Trek Picard (which is kind of a long awaited sequel) with short seasons but the third is great! Maybe a couple of key episodes of ST: VOY too….

NSG MMA

Thanks for another great episode. Don't forget about Star Trek: Picard, after the TNG movies. Possibly a key episode watch for the first two seasons, but Season 3 is definitely in need of a full season reaction. Thank u again for the great content. 👍

DiSarli

I didn’t think much about „Inner Light” other than it was a cool episode with a good story when I was a kid, but the older I got the more the concept made me think. We only have one life, cannot redo anything. Picard lived a second lifetime so different to his actual one with family and children. Something he kind of decided against in his real life in sake of his career. One might wonder how his life would have been otherwise, but he experienced it with this event. In the final scene when he hugs the flute it represents for me how much he loved his family on Katan and misses them. You start to wonder how you would live that life or if you were given a second one. The emotional impact of this experience will be picked up in a future episode, but was “forgotten” by the writers of the series “Picard” in a dialogue between Picard and Riker, which is a sad detail.

DiSarli

There were actually 4 “TNG” Star Trek movies, namely 7-10, but you are absolutely correct that only one of them (8) is good. After watching movie 10 I was so upset how bad it was and that is was basically ear numbing explosions for 90mins or something with a ridiculously stupid story. I regret the time wasted on that movie. VOY (especially from end of season 3 onwards) is good with the best finale of the 3 series (TNG,VOY,DS9). DS9 is also good, but takes 3rd place for me.

Don Dunco

This is sort of the second time an Enterprise captain has lived a full life. There is an episode of Star Trek called the Paradise Syndrome that has getting amnesia and settiling down with a healer. You should look it up and watch it.

Joe Jupiter

I'm so glad you enjoyed these episodes, and that you included "I, Borg." Not only is it a great episode, but it will pay off, later. The selections for season five, as with previous seasons, have ably shown what makes "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and Star Trek as a whole, so special. They really did cover every genre and every topic, and they had the ability to be as emotionally powerful as any drama. There'll never be another show like this one. Also, you mentioned wanting a wiki resource. Here it is: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Portal:Main

It's interesting to me that every time people encounter the 'day repeating' plotline, they call it the 'Groundhog Day' plot, or compare it to that movie in some way, because that's obviously the most famous example. But technically, this episode of Star Trek, Cause and Effect ,came out *before* the movie Groundhog Day, and as far as I know, is the very first media (of movies or television) to *ever* do this whole day repeating storyline. So technically, Star Trek did that before Groundhog Day, or anyone else for that matter.

john reed

really enjoy watching these episodes . Next season (6) ran at the same time as star trek deep space nine . re think u sould consider watching them too

K, Zachary

Watching Star Trek with Cassie is really fun. You guys and Cassie have made me a fan. The Inner Light was exceptional episode.

Z Simons

You can find full symphonic versions of the Inner Light flute theme. It's one of my favorite pieces of film music to listen to.

Don

These 2 episodes perfectly sum up for me why i never really liked The next generation show and why i always got frustrated with it. I'm a sci fi fan and i am a star trek fan but TNG is just rubbish at least 50% of the time. No offence intended to people who love it but its such a hard slog for all of us that didn't 100% connect with it. I think Cassie is really lucky and made the right choice just to watch "key" episodes. If she'd watched all of the series up to this point she she may still have loved it but also might have got to this old man Picard episode and just thought here we go again. I dont need my sci-fi to be be action packed. I Borg is a fantastic episode. Perfect moral quandary Star Trek. But that second one was boring as hell. I know they haven't done that exact story before but they did this same type of episode and the same kind of theme so many bloody times. By the time we got to this part in the run i was just done with these episodes. I think its a real shame that Cassie is watching these so that she doesn't go into the movies blind and probably wont continue on to Voyager or DS9 which were much superior shows.

Clarence Newman

I'm venturing a guess here, Cassie. The "someone" Kamen reminded you of at the end of The Inner Light (when his hair is very long and white) is maybe the old Bilbo when he's leaving to get on the ship?

Randolph Tirazona

At various parts of my life I've lived another life - with Star Trek! Everything I needed to know in life I learned from Star Trek! Escapism is the closest I can come; but it's like "The Inner Light" - in living in another world. @Cassie remember that melody Picard played as it will surface again Season 6 Episode 19: "Lessons" Star Trek throughout the years wither its TOS, TNG, etc. has always lead the way in TV show originality, story telling originality, etc. Watch to explore strange new worlds, new life and new civilizations; not because someone says its good or bad, but because its there to explore. "We do these things not because they are easy... But because they are hard!" JFK You may not see - one important episode that is important to you. You may find something that touches you close to your heart and soul like no other ever before. For me it was in 69 - "Empath" or in TNG: "Ensign Ro" or Strange New Worlds: "Ad Astra per Aspera" (S2E2) but there are many, many others that we find close to our hearts.

Kirk Sloan

I just realized that the tune played on the flute is very similar to the theme from Outlander. Looking it up I learned both of them are based on a Scottish song called "The Skye Boat Song". Ronald D Moore was a writer/producer on both series.

Clarence Newman

Don't worry about future seasons being less entertaining, Cassie. All long-running series' have peaks that fans remember them for, but that doesn't mean that what comes after the peak is bad. If you were to watch all 26 episodes of 6 & 7, then yes, you'd see a dip in places, but as you're only watching 8 per season (you've set a precedent now, sorry, no erasies), there's plenty there for you to love. In fact, there's an upside for us poor episode-pickers. You won't notice the drop in quality, but selecting great episodes for you to watch will become a little bit easier for us. I've just checked the episode list for season 6 and there are at least 10 I'd love you to watch (including "Relics" and, oh my gosh, you will LOVE that one!, plus a two parter called "Chain of Command" that 's one of the best of the entire series). Season 7 has at least 6, including "Attached", the premise of which you have literally been begging for since season 1! In short, sweet lady, you worry too much.

John Armbruster

I have never read anyone pitying someone before for watching TNG. But I do agree Cassie is more of a Star Wars personality than a Star Trek personality. And I don't really agree with cherry picking episodes. So much of TNG character development happens in the background of episodes that when you get to an Inner Light or a Family, she doesn't get the full impact.

John Armbruster

He has the opportunity again in Tapestry.

John Sullivan

I could play that Inner Light theme at my funeral. So powerful

Doc Larry/old geezer

Interesting trivia the young man who played his son in the episode inner light was Patrick Stuart son

DiSarli

True, but for some reason I didn’t find his character in that alternative life time believable in the sense that it was so far different from his normal self. Granted that was the intent, but taken a bit too far. Nevertheless an entertaining episode though.

Elias Shaikh

Cassie, you may have noticed by now a certain development in the character of Jean Luc Picard: in that he’s gradually evolved from being uncomfortable around children to becoming ever so fond of children. The Inner Light was cementing in that regard, plus his love for music (because of the flute) that stayed with him for the rest of his life. When Riker gave him the flute, and he held it to his heart, you can see the effect it had on him. You’re not alone in being brought to the brink of shedding tears at that moment, and even more as he played it. The story had a few technical plot holes of course, but overall it’s one of the most beautiful episodes ever written.

Lazarus Gonzales

I kind of want you to rewatch “Galaxy Quest” I honestly think you’d enjoy it a lot more

Brent Petty

There's a total of seven season of NG, is that correct? Only two seasons left?

Shadowlord

Actually, the first time loop story filmed was The Twilight Zone episode, "Shadow Play" (1959).

Ria Grix

It is so very nice to revisit these episodes. I’ve not seen them since the 80s/90s I guess… either on BBC2 or renting something called a ‘VHS’ from a place called Videoscene over in the local town.

Brent Petty

Thanks. She's already watched several of the movies. 3-4 of them, anyway.

Mike Lemon

Yes. Two more seasons and seven more movies. A few more months and the long nightmare is over, unless the Voyager, Deep Space 9, Picard, Enterprise, TOS cartoon, etc. people get their way, then it never ends.

TechJJ

Sorry you feel this is nightmare. For many of us fans of Star Trek, it's heaven to see her reactions of high-quality TV episodes leading up to the 7th movie. It's beloved show for a lot of people. Approaching 1000 TV episodes and 13 big-screen movies can't be wrong.

Benjamin Lundy

Chain of Command is a great 2-parter but a very difficult watch for reasons I'm sure I don't have to explain. I don't revisit that one too often. Now Tapestry, THAT is a can't-miss season 6 episode.

TechJJ

If you love the crew you'll still enjoy all 4, just like Cassie enjoyed all 6 of TOS movies (for the crew) even if odd numbered ones are weaker. I like all of them. My wife and I both really liked ST:Insurrection. Though 10th movie is the weakest of TNG movies IMHO, there are still some great actions.

Brent Petty

I'm fine w/ her reacting to them and I'm happy a portion of viewers are enjoying her ST reactions. I just wish there was more time between each upload. I'm getting tired of looking at each week's update knowing I won't be watching one-third of the uploads.

TechJJ

Yes. Absolutely just relax on a recliner when no one is around, and just close your eyes and listen.

TechJJ

I hope Cassie watches S3 of ST:Picard as well. Her wish for Beverly and Picard... But it doesn't lead to a feature film so she may not be able to justify it based on initial justification of watching the TV episodes. Unless, she use her Mandalorian / The last of Us rationale!

NSG MMA

Anything is possible, positive thoughts. Lol

Rick Moreno

And Batai (the elder) is Richard Riehle, who also appeared in "The Fugitive" and "Office Space."

Clarence Newman

Agreed, there's nothing cuddly about Chain of Command, but it's such a good and well-acted story it really can't be missed. Plus Cassie has seen far worse so she can handle it. As for Tapestry, I doubt there are many episodes that tick more boxes in regard to what she likes. It's a Picard episode and she loves Picard. It provides a significant back-story and she loves those. It has a love interest and, well...duh. And it's also a prime example of why we ended up loving Q. It will definitely be getting my vote.

John Neiberger

The Inner Light kills me every time I see it. He lived a lifetime as someone else, then was thrust immediately back into Picard's life. It's heartbreaking.

Allen W. McDonnell

Cause and Effect is IMO one f the top ten all time Star Trek episodes across all series.

psu01414

If you are anywhere near this place you should really go. There is nothing like walking the corridors of the original Enterprise. My daughter was squealing when the turbolift doors opened onto the bridge. https://startrektour.com/

JD

I got engaged there! Been a bunch of times since!!! Last time Jonathan Frakes gave the tour and also an hour Q+A on the bridge! Met Q too.

Clarence Newman

Appalling episode, we cannot do that to her. I'd much rather she went back to Season 4 and watched Remember Me.

Bernd Buchsbaum

Wonderful: "Cause and Effect" and "The Inner Light" - two of my Top 3 TNG episodes in one reaction. Already looking forward to see you reacting to "Parallels" (S7E11) the third one of my all time favorites.
