They tricked me, kind of. The whole time I was thinking this was based on a true story! I thought this held up really well! On the edge of my seat, got to know and feel for the characters and really great practical effects! Gene Hackman's speech at the end was so good and Mrs. R was everything good!

[Full Reaction] The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Gene Hackman is my favorite actor. Entertaining movie, looking forward to watching later today.

Gábor Árki

I remember watching this movie as a kid, and afterward, I didn't dare set foot on a boat for a long time. 😄

Daniel Fuchs

React to another 70s Desaster movies: The Towering Inferno (1974), Meteor (1979) with Sean Connery, Airport (1970) and the Sequels Airport 1975 and Airport 1977.

rakesh

That stunt scene. You know the one. That's still awesome even to this day.

Mike LL

I am BEYOND EXCITED to be watching THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE with Cassie. It's almost like I wanted to go BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. But forget I said that. Yes, forget that completely. 🤣

Oh, The Towering Inferno. That movie really left a mark on me as a kid and I'm still kind of afraid of electrical fire. I was only 4 or 5 when I saw it. I was sick that day and couldn't sleep, so I ended up watching it with my parents on TV, though I spent most of the time with my head buried in a pillow being too afraid to watch. I haven't seen it since.

Mike LL
>>147595953

Oh yes! AIRPORT (1970) has always been one of my "pick five" choices if I ever won the trivia contest. It is such a fun picture, and the movie that started the disaster movie cycle of the 1970's. THE TOWERING INFERNO is a must, a Cassie/Carly movie for sure. Paul Newman and Steve McQueen. You can't go wrong with that one.

rakesh
>>147595953

Good picks. Towering inferno is top notch with a A list cast. Metor was a bit naff though, even with Connery. I do like 70s end of the world type movies though, Soylent Green, the Omega Man and The Andromeda Strain.

Imzadi

Loved that movie growing up, so exciting.

The Sheeple

There ia a Remake from 2006 by Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot). It has better effects, but Lacks in Story telling.

Biggman83

This era of Disaster movie was so great. Hollywood in its prime really. The Towering Inferno would be the perfect follow up!

Dan M

I’m pretty sure this is the first disaster movie that I had ever seen, and it took a lot of convincing from my wife to get me to go on our first cruise. Its been awhile since I’ve seen it, so it’ll be fun to revisit it. The only thing I never liked about this movie was the use of the word “adventure” in the title. When I think of an adventure, I think of something fun, exciting, and thrilling. There was none of that in what those passengers had to go through.

Wesley White

Believe it or not, I've never seen this movie, I've heard of it though! I may give it a watch later when I get home from work tomorrow! Right now, it's late, I gotta get some sleep! I look forward to watching this reaction and movie for the first time ever lol! Have a good Monday, love and support🥰😇🙏🤗😁😉👍✌🌹

Chris Retzlaff

I have loved this movie since I was 6. Gene Hackman great, Shelly Winters (who plays Roseannes Grandmother on the show) Red Buttons, Ernest, Roddy without all the ape make up, Nielsen, and Grampa Joe...Fantastic. I was excited for Cassie to see this, it's everything she loves....🤣🤣..in one movie.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

"How many more?!" That moment of desperation is one of the many reasons why I say this film is Gene Hackman's best performance. As if he wasn't already amazing throughout the rest of the film, that final "If You want Blood take mine" moment showing that he has personally finally been defeated, lost his faith, lost his sense of any understanding he thought he had of the Almighty, but still sacrifices himself in the hope that maybe those last few will make it. Incredible.

I remember not hating the 2006 remake. Also just looked up the cast and it's not bad... Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum and the captain of all captains Andre Braugher. Nine Nine!

Clay F

"The little bastard was right." This was a first watch for me. Good movie. Seem like the movie had a few of your fears. I like how gritty at times, and the tension and human aspects. "Maybe we're two of a kind ... and you don't like looking at yourself." Also, interesting a 52-year old movie like a time capsule. Gene Hackman was perfectly cast as the smart decisive leader. His speech at the end was so good. Ernest Borgnine is a good actor. I am not really into disaster movies, but glad I watched this one. I like Titanic (1997). I very much like the Chernobyl (2019) TV series.

Brian McGovern

Yes. 1972 is a long time ago.I should know. I was born in’72. I couldn’t remember who died in this. The only one I knew for sure was Mrs Rosen. The music was very strange to me. It sounded more like John Barry than John Williams. It had a very James Bond flavour to it. I suspected that Williams did the score but while listening I couldn’t help but hear a Bond type score.

clutchkman

I really like this movie. It's a disaster movie, that's fun!

3dbadboy1

You need to react to the Towering Inferno with a huge cast including Steve McQueen and Paul Newman and like this movie, music by John Williams before he was famous.

Matt Rose
>>147605444

Great one. POSEIDEON ADVENTURE, TOWERING INFERNO, and a couple of the AIRPORT movies are really amazing for this genre.

3dbadboy1
>>147596178

Yea the one by Ernie Orsatti, the dashing young man who danced with Susan.

Joe Lazarus

Thank You. Gene Hackman was terrific in this. Hope you do more 70s disaster films and add these titles to the list... Towering Inferno (1974) Airport (1970) Earthquake (1974) Skyjacked (1972) Airport '77 (1977) Airport 1975 (1974)

Mark Daniels

Wow, this came out of nowhere…one of my favorite movies! Glad this finally made the channel. Can we get The Taking of Pelham 123 while we’re in this era?

Mojo One Thousand

"I have mixed feelings about Grandpa Joe"... we may have to circle back to drill into that. Haberdashery is menswear, so "Mr. Martin" was involved in the sale of menswear. I don't think I have heard that word since I was kid, my mum used it a bit. I think it become less used in the 80s and 90s and then has just become men's fashion. I think Harrison Ford is constantly paying homage to Gene Hackman's "Reverend Scott", the amount of pointing he did in this movie was pretty remarkable. It is tough to look at Leslie Nielsen without expecting some ridiculously deadpan comment to come out his mouth. I know the first "Naked Gun" movie has been seen, but I would still like to see reactions to them now that Cassie has a greater frame of reference. One last fun fact... Jason Bateman now lives in Ernest Borgnine's ("Mr. Rogo") house. Bateman bought after his death in 2012, and apparently Mr. Borgnine lived in for several decades. If you have ever listened to Jason Bateman's podcast "Smartless" then you may have heard some humorous stories about Mr. Borgnine's living habits in his later years - Will Arnett ("Lego Batman" and "GOB" from "Arrested Development") wasn't shy about talking about it .

I. Will. Never. Go. On. A. Cruise. A I say this after having been on a scientific vessel out at sea where I went down to the bottom in a two man research submarine. We descended in calm seas and came up 50 minutes later to a Force 3 gale. Never again for any of those.

Nick Stark

“If you don’t survive, HER death is meaningless.” By far the most heartbreaking moment is the death of Mrs Rosen (Mel). Her character was the embodiment of a loving and caring grandmother. The acting in this film is what sets it apart from most disaster films. You come to care about these characters. I get teary eyed every time I’ve watched this iconic film. Loved watching you react to this classic 70’s disaster film. You were obviously invested in these characters survival.

Chris Retzlaff

1972 doesn't seem like a long time ago, but it's like thinking about the depression in the 1980s, crazy. Shelly Winters was just amazing in this. Can't say that enough, gets me everytime.

BRT

Didn't see this at the theater but I remember when it premiered on TV. Was a really big deal. They aired "The Making of..." several times during the week leading up to it, so the anticipation was huge. I was a big fan of Roddy McDowall and this was the first I'd seen him since his Planet of the Apes films.

Dan M
>>147599914

Lol…seriously, it should have been called the Poseidon Panic Attack. It would be like changing “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to “An Adventure on Elm Street”.

Dan M
>>147599914

Yikes! No thank you! Gotta admit though, I was totally against going on a cruise, but after it was over, I couldn’t wait to do it again. And now we’re planning to celebrate our 30th anniversary on a cruise.

Celeste McAllister

'The Towering Inferno' is now a must watch! The next time you're visiting SoCal,book a room on the QUEEN MARY! Where this movie was filmed on location....

Matt Rose

You have to appreciate a film where nobody, except for the children, has any sort of 'plot armor'. Anyone can die along the way.

Bill Maurer
>>147595953

The Towering Inferno is on YouTube Movies for free (i have a subscription) in case you are interested in watching it, again

Mike LL
>>147600136

This was an A-List cast from top to bottom. Filled with Oscar Winners, Gene Hackman (2 Oscars, 5 Nominations), Shelley Winters (2 Oscars, 4 Nominations, 1 of those nominations for this film), Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Red Buttons, and Roddy McDowell, all earned Oscars in their careers, and Arthur O'Connell, who Cassie saw in Anatomy of a Murder, had two Nominations in his career. That is one stacked cast!!

Mike LL
>>147607901

I love the AIRPORT films, but mostly want Cassie to see the first one from 1970, and also THE TOWERING INFERNO!

Chris Retzlaff
>>147614371

Yeah, Bateman implies that every room was relatively active back in those days. If the Captain came up to the preacher and said I just wanted to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you...I would have lost it

Mike LL

This reaction was better than I had ever hoped for! Cassie was so absorbed in the “adventure”. You can only hope your reactor goes into a movie blind, but Cassie didn't even seem to realize she was watching one of the classic disaster movies! That part was too lucky! Loved the Oscar winning special effects. The cast, full of Oscar winners, were great. Shelly Winters got a Supporting Nomination for the film. There were 13 nominations all total, including John Williams for his score, and of course the Oscar Winning Best Song. I love hearing the song early in the movie, lyrics foreshadowing the cataclysm to come. I have a lot of nostalgia for this film, having seen it many times when it came out in the theater. I don't remember how I even did that, I must have been only 14 or 15 at the time. As others have suggested lets watch some more of these “adventure” films, like my favorites AIRPORT (1970) and THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974), but also EARTHQUAKE (1974), AIRPORT '75 (1974), and who besides me saw ROLLERCOASTER (1977) in the theater with SurroundSound?? (But that last one, ROLLERCOASTER was not a serious suggestion, it's not a great film!)

Chris Clarke

If PIB eventually reaches the point where there's a Popcorn In Bed Cruise, I'm definitely signing up!🙂 And Cassie, provided you take good company with you (for which your family definitely qualify by all accounts) I'm fairly certain you'd love being on a cruise: no cooking or cleaning, lots of pampering and you can just take life at your own pace. Popcorn Afloat!!!🍿

Chris Clarke
>>147607901

The first Airport film is excellent; the 2nd more notorious for inspiring Airplane! and worth watching for that alone! All four are entertaining in their own way. Good old Patroni.

John Drake

You should watch "No Way Out" - Hackman & Kevin Costner. Also loads of Gene Hackman greats the 2 French Connections (tough thrillers), The Conversation, Scarecrow (with Pacino), Superman II, and, for something a bit more recent Enemy of the State with Will Smith.

Richard Maurer

Cassie's right, the adventure part of the title doesn't make much sense. I doubt anyone coming out of the hull of the ship was thinking "well, that certainly was an adventure".

Celeste McAllister
>>147643483

"Adventure" I'm told it didn't make a great deal of sense back in the day,it's a "fight for survival" movie....

Gábor Árki
>>147599914

You're right, calling this adventure is very weird. Here the title has been translated to The Poseidon Catastrophe.

Richard Maurer
>>147643483

Yeah, it's never made sense to me since it first came out. Maybe The Poseidon Disaster would have been a better name.

Scott Macaulay

That was way more intense than I remember back in the day! Mrs. Rosen hit hard. Check out that actress, Shelly Winters, on Johnny Carson clips sometime. She was quite a character IRL too!

rakesh

There was a time in the 80's where it felt that Ernest Borgnine was in everything.

Richard Maurer
>>147645745

He was in a lot of movies in the 80's but I mostly remember him in Escape From New York (81).

2-Can
>>147596178

He passed away a few years ago, at the age of 80 - for over 50 years, until I googled it today, I believed the meme that said that stunt actually killed him.

Patrick Fitzgerald

What a cast! Saw this in the theater when it came out! Thank You Cassie! You Rock!

clays283

Must have watched this every weekend on one basic cable station or another when I was a kid. It became one of my favorites. Great reaction. Thanks. Please consider "The Hustler" 1961.

rakesh
>>147645745

He seemed to appear in alot fo tv shows as a guest star.... but also had the permie gig with AirWolf.

rakesh

I do rememebr there was a spate of ship based movies in the 80's. Raise the Titanic, The Philadelphia Experiment and The FInal Countdown. If any of you are hankering for a ship based TV show, The Last Ship which finished a couple of years ago was excellent. In many ways reminded me of a star trek type show.

Rick Williams

Great Reaction Cassie. I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid watching it on tv. The drama of being trapped in an upside down ship and trying to find a way out fascinated me. It's a good movie. And a sad movie. It was great to watch it again.

Rick Williams
>>147645745

I don't remember him in that movie. Cassie will have to react to Escape from New York so I can watch it again and see.

Habman

Don't know if it's been said yet but the scene where the passenger fell to his death on the light fixture. The stuntman who did the stunt actually passed away on the stunt

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

This actually reminded us of Jason Takes Manhattan Friday 13th VIII you know where Jason boards that cruise ship. Yeah it reminded us a lot of that one and the 2005 remake that came out just for TV.

Just Plain Bob

Regarding Gene Hackman, you should really react to “The French Connection”, in which he plays police officer Popeye Doyle, based on an actual case. He’s also great in “The Quick and the Dead”, co-starring Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe and a young Leonardo DiCaprio. For more Leslie Nielsen, I highly recommend the sci-fi classic “ Forbidden Planet.” Finally, for more Roddy McDowall (Acres) catch “Planet of the Apes” and “Fright Night.”

Mojo One Thousand
>>147614371

Will Arnett has a pretty filthy name for the house, and it distracted me a bit while I was watching... apparently the bannisters are sturdy enough. I was waiting for that "Linarcos" guy to start a sentence with "surely".

sharkey197

Disaster Movie Formula. Get a bunch of A list Actors, put them in extreme jeaopardy and see who survives. These movies were the rage in the seventies and they really hold up. The scene where the waater came flooding into the ballroom and drowned everyone was done for real, one take, all practical effects. Shelley Winters (Mrs Rosen) did her own stunts being a very good swimmer and I gotta give her props, didn't care that her dress was floating all over exposing her underwear! She was a gutsy actress. Now, you absolutely must watch Towering Inferno!

Robert James

Much of this was filmed on the Queen Mary which is docked in Long Beach California. No Cassie- it’s not a true story! Lol

Larry Darrell
>>147596194

I never made it all the way through Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979). It was just ruining every emotional string that the original played. Very disappointing, considering the cast. Correct, on forgetting it, or better yet, never even knowing. That cast though! Sometimes I think maybe it deserves a second chance, but then I remember the original. That’s all you need. Or watch The Towering Inferno (1974) for a spiritual sequel.

Larry Darrell
>>147599914

“The Poseidon Catastrophe”??? Well that just takes the Fun out of it. They tell you right from the beginning that you’re not going to enjoy yourself. ;-)

Larry Darrell
>>147634264

Rollercoaster (1977) ain’t too bad. Definitely not great, but if you’re a fan of these kinds of films and 70s films, it’s worth a watch. I mean if you’re going to be scared to go in the water, take a cruise, go in a high rise, get on a plane, or live in California… you might as well be afraid to go on a Rollercoaster too. ;-) Here’s to The Towering Inferno (1974) and Airport (1970). :-)

Ben Livingstone

If she found this stressful, I definitely recommend that Cassie not watch "The Last Voyage" with Robert Stack. My heart didn't stop hammering for a full hour after it was over!

Habman
>>147666787

I stand corrected. You are right. Thanks for the correction

Stick Figure Studios

Well, Cassie, you learned the hard way the tough lesson of watching a disaster movie: try not to get too attached to any of the characters because none of them are guaranteed to make it to the end of the film... even the normally invulnerable leader played by the movie's biggest star (I realize, of course, that it's hard not to get attached when they're all played by such wonderful engaging actors; disaster movies always had the biggest and best casts). Having seen this before, every time you kept saying how much you loved Shelly Winters/Mrs. Rosen, my heart just sank because I knew what was coming. Disaster movies were HUGE in the 1970s. Though it was well before the advent of photo-realistic CGI (which more or less started in the 80s but didn't really become common until the 90s, when disaster movies -- not coincidentally I think -- made a bit of a comeback) the continuing development of practical visual effects technology had made it possible to stage such spectacular works of nature believably. For my money, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE is the best of them, but if you're ever interested in checking out more titles in this immensely popular subgenre from that era, I'd recommend THE TOWERING INFERNO with Steve McQueen, AIRPORT (which was spoofed in the comedy AIRPLANE) and EARTHQUAKE with Charlton Heston. Thank you for reacting to this. I enjoyed watching it again and I'm glad you enjoyed it too (in spite of how intense it got at times). Keep up the good work.

Larry Darrell

Adventure (noun) - an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity; daring and exciting activity calling for “enterprise” and enthusiasm; a bold, usually risky undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome. Adventure (verb) - engage in hazardous and exciting activity, especially the exploration of unknown territory; put (something especially one’s life) at risk Enterprise - a project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort; initiative and resourcefulness. — Who ever said Adventures were Happy Fun Walks in the Park? :-) While I was Enthused and Excited watching this film, sitting on my couch, in front of my TV. The Characters in the film took care of the other parts… this time. ;-) For another ADVENTURE… even GRANDER than Poseidon… please, please check out… The Towering Inferno (1974) No worries. There’s no ambiguity with this title. Nor is it a True Story. :-)

Stick Figure Studios
>>147603148

Even though there really isn't much music in it, what's there is kind of Barry-esque throughout. It isn't until the very end that it stays fo found like classic Williams.

Wesley White

Well this movie sure was something else, really tugged at your heart strings! I did enjoy watching this movie, considering this was my first time watching it ever in my life lol! Like you said, it does hold up! I have to say I was shocked to find out that none other than the legendary John Williams did the music for this film, that shocked the heck out of me! Even more so finding out at the end of the movie in the end credits, parts of this was filmed on the Luxury Ocean Liner, The Queen Mary which is currently docked in Long Beach, CA! I've been there dozens of times when I was a kid, plus it's where my parents had their honeymoon when they go married lol! It's been a long time since I've been on that ship! Ocean Liners looked a lot like that back then compared to how todays Cruise Liners are! The Queen Mary did do some service for the military back in WWII, she was retrofited as a troop ship from 1939 to 1946! Before she would do service in WWII, The Queen Mary was a luxury ocean liner, even The Three Stooges themselves would travel on that ship from time to time, there's a video of family footage showing Moe Howard doing a game of ring toss on the deck lol! Nowadays, the Queen Mary serves as a tourist attraction and a hotel from time to time! Plus there's another added attraction parked right beside the ship, a decomishened Soviet Submarine B-427 aka The Black Scorpion, I've been on that sub as well, it's cool! Great reaction Cassie, this movie was something, glad you enjoyed it despite it's somewhat sad ending! Have a good Tuesday, love and support, you and Carly are the best, God bless y'all and the family🥰😇🙏🤗😁😉👍✌🌹

Allen Bond

This reaction ranks up there with Rocky II, thanks Cassie.

Eddie Perkins

I enjoyed that; it's been years since I saw it. " When I said I helped my dad pull in a 600-pound swordfish. I didn't mean that I thought you weighed that much." Another good movie with Shelley Winters is The Night of the Hunter (1955).

David Kent

This is a really awesome classic. John Williams did the score. 2 other classic disaster movies to consider that are scored by John Williams is The Towering Inferno and Earthquake. And yes Leslie Nielson was the captain. He is a dramatic actor, it wasn't until Airplane! that he did comedy.
