I did not see that coming! Clearly I'm part of the target audience for this one... easily spooked and very gullible haha. The twist was so unexpected and so well executed! And Bryce Dallas Howard was just phenomenal. I can't wait to hear what you guys thought of this one.

I cannot wait to watch this reaction later. One of my favorite movies of all time. Actually last week, I drove to Philly and was very lucky to see James Newton Howard conduct the music for this film. M. Night was the host for the evening. So excited to see this later.

Chris Thom

Could've sworn you two mentioned seeing this before. But it was just Carly that said that. But one of you did say that. Glad to know I'm not fully racked by dementia yet.

Macabre Movie Maniac

I really think my favorite Shyamalan movie is The Visit. "You have a problem with germs don't you?" *splat* 🤣🤣🤣🤣

aarswft

It's funny how this isn't that scary of a movie but it has a single scene that haunted me for 2 decades.

djKENTO

This was the first M Night movie where I called out the twist fairly early on and I remember being disappointed that I could see it. But that's also kept me from watching it since. If anyone was gonna get me to revisit this one it'd be you.

Just Plain Bob

That was my experience as well. In fact, the only thing that threw me was that it seemed like such an obvious twist. There’s also the fact that, by the time this came out, Shyamalan was well known to put such twists in his movies.

Dan M

Oh…I wasn’t expecting to see you post this movie until this weekend. What a pleasant surprise…almost M Night Shyamalan like. I really enjoyed this movie when I first saw it. I thought the plot was interesting, the execution was beautiful, and the acting was great. Bryce Dallas Howard, in her first big role before hitting it big with Spider Man 3 and the Jurassic World movies, was breathtaking. I think this movie gets a lot of criticism because it falls victim to Shyamalan’s previous movies, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. Everyone was expecting that huge payoff, and while I thought the twist was good, it kinda fell flat in many people’s eyes. Anyway, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen this movie. I’m looking forward to watching along with you later tonight to see your reaction to the ending.

Vlad D

The part where Lucius takes her hand to go into the cellar, along with the music always overwhelms me. I can ababsolutely feel their love for each other. I always cry at that scene

Rick Rodriguez

A decent but not great movie that's more interesting when one thinks of it as a fable. Especially because of the twist... It actually should have ended with the whole village doing the twist.

Rick Rodriguez

The twist is more of a thought provoking element then a "SHOCKER.''

Scott Macaulay

I like the movie but when I saw it in the theater, I guessed the twist in the first few minutes for some reason. My second viewing of it with you was better because I enjoyed seeing you be surprised. I think I initially went into it looking for the twist.

Dan M

I totally agree. But I think that’s why many people were disappointed…they were expecting the “SHOCKER”. I give credit to Shyamalan for trying not to be so formulaic.

Patrick Flanagan

The first twist was disappointing, since it threw out the entire premise of the movie i wanted to see, but at least it was mostly done well. The final twist is so dumb and handled so poorly it sinks the movie for me. There's only so much disbelief one can suspend.

Blake Evans

I remember hating this movie when I saw it in theaters. I was wholly expecting a Sixth Sense meets Withering Heights. It was very poorly marketed as a monster movie. In years since it has become my favorite Shyamalan film. More about the loss and protection of innocence and how far would one go to protect those they love from pain. But pain is inevitable. The opening at August’s son’s grave. He even comes to the realization that “We cannot run from heartache. Heartache is a part of life.” But in spite of that pain there is always hope. Just as Edward keeps repeating “We are grateful for the time we have been given.”

Thin White Duke

I guessed the twist in the first 5 minutes, though I thought the creatures were just the town's collective paranoia

Canadianant

I saw this in theatres and enjoyed it. I didn't catch the twist at that time but I'm not a person who tends to try it out think movies as I'm watching them. Bryce Dallas Howard was great in this and I've heard her interviewed before and she speaks quite fondly of working on movie. My only comment would be that if it was me making the movie I would have put the scenes the other way I would have had her go over the wall and meet the guy in the Jeep first and then go back and show what was in the box. That being said it was fun to watch with you and I'm glad that you didn't figure out the twist before and we got to see a great reaction to it.

Story Archer

Their love is so pure and so absolute. First when waiting for him on the porch and later at the party - she just sticks out her hand into the darkness with absolute faith that he will be there to take it. And that scene on the porch, where they discuss dancing at their wedding... incredibly beautiful... and then Hurt's speech about not being able to look into the eyes of another father and see that pain, how he cannot bear it. Such an amazing series of performances from so many great actors. And that musical score!

Story Archer

Due to Sixth Sense' s success, so many people walked in already fixated on what the twist would be, and that's REALLY missing the forest for the trees with this one. And yes, they really messed up with the marketing.

Story Archer

Too many people mistakenly focused on anticipating the twist at the end and missed out on the incredible, beautiful film it is from the very beginning.

Story Archer

Too many people mistakenly focused on the twist at the end and missed out on the incredible, beautiful film it is from the very beginning.

Brent Petty

They did with Unbreakable, too. Tarantino even talked about it.

Doug Fisher

I don't think I would call you gullible Cass... you are a highly empathetic person and you invest 100% in a movie (well most of the time ;), which makes it hard to see or envision big picture concepts. You are involved scene by scene, line by line. You have to be divested a little from the movie to better "see things coming". I would much rather be you than the alternative, as fully enjoying a movie the way it is intended is much better than "predicting" an outcome. That is kind of boring and shallow to be honest. I didn't pick up on what was happening prior to Ivy entering the woods, though I did think that it was Noah in the suit... him going into the woods frequently, stabbing Lucius, and the animals. Did not see the modern day twist however. Sadly Shyamalan peaked with this movie and started his downhill slide with "Lady in the Water", with the odd blip thrown in.

OddThomas

One of my favourite movies! It's not even about the twists for me, it's the characters, the ideas, the music that keeps me coming back. I really liked Lady in the Water too but that is even more of a Marmite film. Shymalan peaked with The Village.

Mike Gallagher

Like most Shyamalan movies it was filmed in the Philly area. This one ridiculously close to me. What I always found odd about the idea here is that the Amish live not to far from here. They are very much like these folks except they know about the outside world and interact with it all the time. They choose to live the simple life. I know Shyamalan, being from here, would be very familiar. So these folks could do this without all the security and lies. But I guess he chose to make a twisted version of them.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

One of composer James Newton Howard’s best work.

rubberkidney

one of the worst directors in history.

D. T. Nelson

Thought this one would "hurt Cassie's feelings". Especially Lucius's stabbing and Noah's death. I'd forgotten that Jesse Eisenberg was in this.

MikeLL

Oh we are all M. Night's "target," and he gets everyone sooner or later. Some of his "hits" don't always quite hit, but some of his misses are usually a good shot.

Story Archer

It's the scene on the porch that gets me every time - the OTHER scene on the porch, where they talk about dancing at their wedding. Just an incredible love story with an equally powerful score.

Story Archer

Something I don't often see mentioned is the very deliberate use of language and in particular dialect throughout the movie. It had to have been affected by the original 'townies', almost like they were trying to intentionally create a fantasy world, divorced from the world they left behind and make it real, but by the time the movie starts it's become second nature and their grown children have adopted the same manner of speaking.

Story Archer

That stabbing is just brutal, man... especially the way it's executed, first at the beginning and then the way the camera pans away at the end.

Story Archer

I'm assuming they didn't want to take any chances that their space might be invaded by lookie-loos and the fragile bubble of their world popped. The Village was specifically designed to keep its members IN as much as others out, because they knew the dangerous temptation that the lure of an unknown outside world could be for young people. Even the Amish are relentlessly pestered by tourists and visitors, and all it would take to pierce the absolute veil of The Village would be ONE fence-hopping hiker.

Story Archer

FWIW, Lady in the Water was just a niche film, and quite beautiful in its own way. Giomatta's performance at the end, talking to and about his wife and daughter might be the most moving performance of his entire career.

Story Archer

To be fair, the marketing surrounding the film didn't do it any favors... but you're right, too many people mistakenly focused on the anticipated twist at the end and missed out on the incredible, beautiful film it is from the very beginning.

Story Archer

Seriously, I might leave work early just to go watch this reaction in full. Got to update my top 10 hopefuls for PiB for the first time in a while: 1) August Rush 2) The Thomas Crowne Affair (1999) 3) Phenomenon 4) Man in the Iron Mask 5) The Horse Whisperer 6) Up Close and Personal 7) Spy Game 8) City of Angels 9) Midnight Run 10) Father Goose

Story Archer

Minority opinion, but I completely agree. It would have been MUCH better received if it had been his first and didn't have to carry the expectations that came with Sixth Sense and his other prior films.

Story Archer

Honestly, I much prefer Cassie's 'trusting' approach to film-viewing. She takes the premises on faith and doesn't spend her time trying to dissect the film in real time or anticipate it's plot/ending. It's a very refreshing way to watch movies and reminds us all of back when movies were something to watch with wonder, rather than cynicism. Without a doubt my favorite aspect of her channel/Patreon and what makes her stand out so much from the crowd imo. She never tried to find her Christmas presents ahead of time, and was genuinely surprised and grateful, no matter what she got.

Uncle Phoenix

BTW: Cassie there is a new John Wick and it has Keanu Reeves. Idk how, but I can’t wait to find out.

Uncle Phoenix

IDK about everyone else but I think that a trip report from you and Carly would be amazing. (I kinda want to know what different celebrities smell like. People say that Mel Gibson smells “bad" and Tom Cruise smells “good".)

rubberkidney

yeah...yea...unless you just have no taste, dont know anything about storytelling, ignore the facts and realities of his horrible god awful films...THEN maybe i could imagine saying something stupid and glib like 'yea...no' you do you though homie! good luck with the stupid thing!

OddThomas

Bryce Dallas Howard is in Lady in the Water too

Steve Mercier

This one got a lot of hate when it came out. And I get it. One after another, the twist ending supernatural gobbledygook of Shyamalan's movies do have a strong sense of diminishing returns. But I always liked this one, if for no other reason Bryce Dallas Howard's highly charismatic performance, and the unique personality dynamic of her love story with Joaquin Phoenix's character. Not sure if Adrien Brody's contribution aged well, along with the fact that his character's "otherness" seems to make him a villain here. But, I suppose that could be taken as a commentary on the flaws of the village itself--the elders who choose to run away from their problems and struggles instead of facing them are ill-equipped to deal with them, even in the safety of their idealized community, leaving the next generation to hopefully learn from their mistakes, and make their "world" a better place.

Vlad D

I agree with you on that as well

Dean Holt

This was a first time watch for me, just been one of those films I’ve not gotten around to watching. But I enjoyed it for what it was and didn’t see the twist coming and I was looking for clues like the reflection in the water and a few other things. I must have missed them or they just might not have been there. But overall I thought it was a good movie, not sure if I will watch it again tbh. But Carly sits on a throne of lies 😂😂, as I just don’t think she wanted to watch this 😂😂.

Gábor Árki

This reaction reminded me of my first time watch of this movie. Cassie, I wouldn't call it being gullible. I think that has some negative connotations. Instead, I’d say you allow yourself to be swept up by the stories without questioning them. I remember the time when I was like that, but nowadays it happens lot less often for me with the new content I'm consuming. Your reactions to the movies that once had that effect on me are a great reminder of my younger self. One of the standout things of the film for me is its unique atmosphere. It creates such an eerie yet beautiful and captivating vibe. The pacing is slow, with each scene and shot taking its time, yet they are all so meticulously composed. Combined with James Newton Howard’s score it blends beauty with unease so well, and leaving you with bittersweet emotions. The performances, especially by Bryce Dallas Howard, are very compelling and subtle. Her portrayal of Ivy is one of my favorite aspects of the movie. I personally did not see the twist coming until the movie revealed it. I agree, that the more you think about how they could have done it the more unlikely it feels. But I find it really thought-provoking and it does open so many questions that stay with you long after the movie finished. PS: Regarding the medicine, they've been living in the village for at least 2-3 decades, long enough for their children (most of whom were either born there or were very young at the time, except for Noah, who seemed to have some awareness of the village's true nature) to start having children of their own. Even if they had taken emergency supplies with them, those would have had limited shelf lives. Many critical medications, like stronger antibiotics, wouldn't have held up well at room temperature over such a long period.

scott osborne

very slow, not scary, good writing, at times boring

Gábor Árki

They wanted to create a simpler, better world for themselves and their children, believing they could escape the harsh realities and the losses they had endured. Living like the Amish wouldn’t have achieved this, as they would still have contact with the outside world and be influenced by it. Additionally, I imagine many of the younger people would either want to visit and experience it firsthand, or even permanently leave if they were aware of the world beyond the village.

Rick Williams

I have always liked this movie. I like the story of Ivy and Lucius. I didn't see the twists coming. I don't think anyone did. How could you. Great Reaction Cassie.

Uncle Phoenix

“…She was led by Love the World moves for Love It kneels before it in awe.” Wow, that is such a powerful sentiment.

Philip Alan

M Night's tension building is remarkable. Yes, I wanted real mythical creatures, but I was fine with what we got. Bryce Howard is always fun to watch. She's so good. I agree with others. This was his last good movie. Loved the reaction!

Story Archer

Something easily overlooked is the sacrifice the father makes to allow his daughter to venture into the woods, in part to make it up Lucius' mother, whom he has (chastely) been in love with for a long time. And the sacrifice made by her mother, whom had to know that that was at least part of the motivation.

Story Archer

I'm such a sap - looking at this list, I realized that all but one (Midnight Run) was at least some kind of love story, just like The Village.

Gray

I do actually quite enjoy this movie on being my second watch in 20 years since it came out, on the regard of medicine I think it expires after a while and decreases in potency and as they said they don't want to contact outside world and are also cosplaying the late 1890's so trying to be authentic.

Brent Petty

As to your argument afterwards, having modern medicine on hand may not have been enough to save everyone. Penicillin isn't much use if you cut down a tree and it falls on you, for example. And I don't believe we see/hear how the child died, do we? Just the tombstone with his DOB and DOD on it.

Chris Thom

That was a fun reaction for this channel. Makes it a lot more fun that you didn't see the end twist coming. Personally I guessed the ending within the first half hour in 2004 when this came out, just because it seemed like all these veteran actors, who I'm sure have all been in multiple period pieces, weren't acting the time period or the language quite right, but didn't seem too bothered about it. They just seemed like too good of actors to be 'acting' quite that carelessly. That and it's M. Night S. directing so it just seemed like a fairly obvious and appropriate twist for this story.

Chris Thom

It reminds me of that Leo, Tilda Swinton movie The Beach. They can run from civilization all they want, but human nature will always find a way in. Because humans gotta human.

Chris Thom

Bet she and Carly would like City of Angels and Horse Whisperer.

Chris Thom

Agree. They showed the box a tad too early. They could've let the interaction play out for a minute too before they showed the car.

Chris Thom

John Hurt and Bryce Dallas were definitely the standouts for me.

YodatheHobbit

Amazing performances, great music infuses emotion, pure love story. The "sometimes we don't do things we want to do so others wont know we want to do them" line spoke to my entire existence in relation to how I interacted with a friend I had a crush on at 19, who was taken when I saw this in the theater. Because it has the desire to wear clothing, the mind races to try to understand what that those we don't speak of could possibly be and that unknown creates fear, so much more scary than say a traditional werewolf, demon, or more animalistic, big teeth kind of "scary" monster type creature. Relatable deep empathy for those who've lost those close because of violence and found a way to try to live without. The desire for escape from that is powerful.

Story Archer

I picked them all because I think they'd love them. That's pretty much my sole criteria. And we know they love Robert Redford.

Doug Fisher

Gee... someone is hyperbolic today aren't they?!

Chris Thom

Great line. Also felt a bit modern for 1800's America.

Chris Thom

Carly did say that Signs was one of the only scary movies she'd seen. Do kind of remember M. Night movies being a lot of peoples' exception for horror-haters.

Chris Thom

Unbreakable has sure gotten a lot of love in the years since it came out. Wasn't quite expecting that.

Chris Retzlaff

This is one of the first movies I saw at the theater and went to the counter afterwards and wanted my money back. I was so angry at this movie. Wasn't huge on Signs but it was good. Sixth Sence...obviously great ....but this was so dumb of a concept...... Flash forward 20 yrs with a greater appreciation for Dallas Howard, Brody, and some of the others...not Eisenberg....and I think I was a bit unfairly harsh back then and kind of like this movie now. Super strange!😂😂

Doug Fisher

I don't know Archer... I think dismissing criticism due to it being "just a niche film" is sidestepping the issues it has. In reality, all genre is "niche" and bedtime story genre is not really niche but if fact all-encompassing. Fantasy is not niche either. "Lady in the Water" is an overly convoluted, vapid, poorly contrived, pedantic and unessentially unsubtly meta film. It is one thing to give yourself Hitchcockian cameos but by giving himself a main role it was erroneous at best, as he is not a good actor, but at worst it was evidentiary of his vanity. "Lady in the Water" was a self-indulgence and showcase for the extent to which Shyamalan's hubris and narcissism had grown. Which would explain his downfall from that point onward. Giomatti is always good so that is like saying, "water is wet" (pun intended). We will just have to agree to disagree on the qualities of the film. I am glad we can agree on preferring Cass' trusting approach to watching movies. I also agree that this is one of the reasons I prefer her channel to others; her and Carly being so genuine would be the main reason for me, of course. Though, I sometimes worry her trusting approach will lead to cognitive dissonance for her, but she seems to have been able to avoid it so far, thankfully.

Clay F

Pleasant surprise. I liked the movie better than I expected. I did not see the twist in the end coming and liked it. Stellar cast. That's pleasing. "Sometimes we don't do things we want to do so that others won't know that we want to do them." I didn't realize that blind people could be so mobile, especially through the woods. I liked The Village better than Unbreakable. Good w/atmosphere. Also, visually expressive. Nominated for Oscar for Best Music (original score). I didn't mind the slower pacing at times. William Hurt - RIP. Hard to believe he's gone. I liked William Hurt in BODY HEAT (1981) w/Kathleen Turner. Set/filmed in Florida. Released 3 years before Romancing the Stone (1984). Kathleen Turner received [1] Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year and [2] BAFTA nomination for Most Outstanding Newcomer. Also, "Body Heat" (1981) on [A] AFI top 100 quotations all time (for a quote by Kathleen Turner character) and [B] AFI top 100 passions (greatest love stories). The sex/nudity is less than in other stuff on the channel. Graphic scenes edited out of the movie for distribution. Maybe "Body Heat" (1981) [RT 93%] could win a William Hurt or Kathleen Turner poll or a Lawrence Kasdan director poll, but that's about it. Maybe a neo-noir poll. Body Heat (1981) is based on (inspired by) a 1944 film and 1943 novel.

Sean Stuart

When seeing this in theaters. My friend was really upset by Noah who is mentally challenged becoming a villain of the story . Which led to an interesting conversation. I think we concluded that he discovered the town stories were a farce and his parents probably dressed as these monsters. Then later on he found he could wear the monster suit to scare people. When Ivy broke his heart the lines blurred more on reality and what is good and evil .

Ben Schwartz

How do I download the reaction? I click the link and it takes me to the video, but there's no link or button to download it, just play it.

John Drake

01:27:04 one for the jumpscare compilation

Dean Holt

@Chris Regards to Carly it was a joke. But personally I don’t really find any of his movies scary, the closest one is probably Six Sense but that’s only because of a few jump scares. After thinking about this one a little I think it’s actually one of his better movies probably behind Split & Six Sense.

Mojo One Thousand

I do agree that he does make a sacrifice by sending his blind daughter, but I don't think the reasons are as completely noble as you have laid out, although that is certain a reason. I suspect another reason was that his daughter being blind allowed him to provide a more detailed note that the folks outside could read and understand and respond appropriately knowing that the it wouldn't be read as she can't see it. This is hinted at by the young guard doing as much acting as he could when he read the note.

Mojo One Thousand

This has quite the cast in it. The score does most of the heavy lifting, but Bryce Dallas Howard and William Hurt are in there punching. The only jump scare that I didn't anticipate was the sinkhole. And Cassie, Judy Greer ("Kitty Walker", "ivy's" sister) seemed so familiar that I thought you would place her. She made a couple of other things in around 2004 with this movie that are on your list of favourites. One being a movie where she plays Jennifer Garner's frenemy "Lucy" called "13 going 30" (aka "Suddenly 30" where I am from), and the other also being a character called "Kitty" in a little TV show called "Arrested Development".

MikeLL

Would love to see Body Heat reaction!

Story Archer

That's an interesting take. I always thought he saw Ivy as the perfect choice because, by not being able to see the technology, the different clothes, not being able to read the signs saying 'Walker Preserve', etc., she was the only one who could go and return without being corrupted into questioning the world that they had created. He didn't tell her everything, didn't tell her about the world out there other than to say that it was bad and the elders wanted to keep people form leaving. She ends the movie still thinking that she was attacked by one of the creatures living in the woods, and that they were real after all. She's the only one who could go, come back and still believe the story she had been raised with.

Clay F

Ben, when you click on "Download this reaction" it takes you to the video in Dropbox, and there is a download link (arrow down icon) in the upper right hand corner. Click on that and the video will be downloaded to your device. I do it on PC.

Clay F

"Arrested Development" is hilarious

Gábor Árki

One more thought for the reaction: it's kind of funny that in the intro Cassie roasted Carly for probably having watched it 🫣, only for Cassie to end up doing it herself on multiple occasion.

Steve Holton

Judy Greer and Bryce Dallas Howard also played sisters in Jurassic World. If you ever see them together be mindful of deadly creatures. 😊

My_Cousin_Mose

I thought you were gonna catch on to the twist at the end about halfway through and I'm glad you didn't. I can totally see some grieving billionaire doing something like this. I liked the ending, a lot of people say they saw it coming a mile away but not me.

Story Archer

He was torturing and killing animals long before that. A person being mentally challenged doesn't preclude them from the possibility of also being murderous or cruel, and the film was certainly not making any insinuation that all or even most mentally challenged people as being that way. Last I checked, sociopathy and psychopathy were mental illnesses as well. In this particular case, I didn't view Noah as the villain so much as simply a tragic character who was unable to control his impulses and didn't fully understand the concepts of right and wrong. That was certainly the light that the film sought to portray him in.

Story Archer

Adrien Brody's Noah wasn't a villain in this film, he was a tragic character and was portrayed as such. There was no intent - subconscious or otherwise, to make any kind of allegation or insinuation as to the nature of the mentally challenged beyond the acknowledgement that they are, in fact, mentally challenged.

Steve Mercier

I think perhaps I disagree with you here. He kills a bunch of animals, stabs Lucius, and tries to attack Ivy. And then he's killed for it in the end. In story terms, this is what you would call an antagonist. Yes, he's mentally challenged; but, not all mentally challenged people do the things that he did. Villains do. He attacked Lucius and Ivy out of jealousy, common among all kinds of villains. Not trying to be a jerk here, but your response is made as a declarative, as in there could be no other interpretation. And, well, that's not my interpretation. Anyway...not trying to start an internet fight here or anything. Hope all is well.

Shehab Dawoud

A more fitting M. Night movie would’ve been ‘The Visit’ (2015). That marked his comeback when it looked like he was washed. I took offense to you calling ‘Trap’ terrible. I mean, you’re not wrong😂 but I had a blast watching it. Josh Hartnett was amazing too.

LukeG84

I was excited to see Cassie's reaction to this movie given the plot twist, but I didn't expect to like the movie if I'm being honest. I only saw an illegal low quality copy of it once, so couldn't remember much other than not really liking it, expect for the plot twist. But watching it again all these years later, and with the benefit of age, I can finally appreciate this movie for the masterpiece that it is. Everything about this movie was so well done, and I am totally blown away by Bryce Dallas Howard's performance. She truly nailed it. ★★★★★

Chris Thom

Also she was in The Descendants, partner to Matthew Lillard's character. That would be a good one for the channel.

Chris Thom

Dang it's WILLIAM Hurt. I've been calling him John Hurt for way too long. RIP.

Chris Thom

Yeah it felt a bit wrong to do that to Noah. But I never really saw it as him being a villain. More like his character was the embodiment of "shit happens." Even in a utopia. Someone gets jealous. Someone is born with a mental disorder. Or a handicap. Someone flirts too hard with someone's spouse. Cheating happens. An accident happens. Someone takes their fear and baggage too far. Point being that true perfection can't exist in this life, nor is it supposed to... and we have to be prepared for that, and except it. Human nature always creeps in. And accidents WILL happen.

Chris Thom

Definitely hits better with some time and perspective. But it's still a super slooooooowwww film. And that mostly only works on first viewing.

Mojo One Thousand

@Steve, forgot she was in that, only seen it once. They red-ed up her hair more to match Bryce Dallas Howard's as I recall now you've said it. I was going to say this, but cut it for length, but I think Judy Greer does play a sister a fair bit, particularly in rom-coms.

Clay F

Understandable. There is a John Hurt -- the guy in Alien 1979 who got the alien on his face early in the movie, and the UK dictator in V for Vendetta, as you may know.

Zeroarmor7

Hilary Hahn's violin was wonderful. But the "twist" was underwhelming to say the least. Saw it in theaters with my mom...she loves it, I wanted my money back. "The Visit" though....

RabidMango

Wait...she never revealed what color he was. What the heck? I'll go with chartreuse.

JutlustajaX

Just in case, if you dont know, use youtube picture on picture mode. Very easy to use. Open up a YouTube video in your browser. Right click. Right click again! Click 'Enter Picture in Picture'

Ben Schwartz

Yeah, I don't see the download link/arrow... I'll look again, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't there

Ben Schwartz

Okay, NOW I see it... the window was zoomed in/out a little bit, which hid some of the buttons for some reason. Working now -- thanks for the help!

Ben Schwartz

So I've got it, and I've used it before, but when I try to use it dl dropbox videos from Cassie's patreon, it doesn't work... it just tries to download some small file instead but then says "forbidden" -- it won't actually download the video.

Clay F

Ben, are you talking about older videos won't download, or are you saying that The Village wouldn't download from dropbox?

Chris Thom

The Visit was legit scary to me and I'm not sure why.

Ben Schwartz

I can download the movies now, for some reason I had my browser window zoomed in/out so that download button wasn't even showing up. But I resized the browser window and now I see the button, so I can download. Someone else had recommended I use a downloader app, so I installed Free Download Manager which has worked well in the past for me, but it won't work with these dropbox downloads for some reason. But at least I can still download them the regular way, without the download manager. I appreciate your help!

Shehab Dawoud

It’s a very original idea and the setting is one that should never be associated with bad things happening. I think that’s why.

Grad

Some beautiful performances in this movie. I agree that Bryce Dallas Howard is a standout - even with the sometimes awkward dialogue. William Hurt is very good as well.

Nadeem L

Im not into romance movies or anything, but Ill admit, that scene when Ivy was holding her hand out saying Lucius will come, the 'monster' close by, and suddenly Lucius comes running, takes her hand and brings her inside...I was brought to tears. It was one of the most romantic scenes Ive ever seen in my life. Perfectly executed. The whole ending, that Ivy was brave enough, also desperate enough to go through that whole journey for Lucius, also brought me to tears honestly

Loved your reaction to this movie, Cassie. You are not gullible Cassie. You are just immersed into the story and take it as is. This movie received a lot of hate. Unfortunate, but I understand why. It was sold as a horror movie, but instead turned out to be a drama. While I was hoping that the creatures were real, I found this to be a very good movie. Bryce Dallas Howard is at her best. Joaquin Phoenix, Adrian Brody & William Hurt are very good too. The scene where Lucious saves Ivy from the creature is a very well-made scene. Ivy standing with her hand held out the door, with Kitty begging her to close it. Then Lucious appears right before the creature arrives, as we go to slow motion with the violin solo, is just played perfectly. This was a great way for you to start "Scary, Not Too Scary, October" Cassie. Fun fact: Bryce Dallas Howard & Judy Greer played sisters in this movie and would later play sister again in "Jurassic World".

Yeah I remember the hate at the time. I was in high school and it was a hot topic back then. But it is actually are very good movie.

Shyamalan's movies are polarizing, and that started with "Unbreakable". It's nice to see that people have given this movie more credit than at first. While it's not a horror/thriller, it does have it has some eerie moments. People find the twists silly or dumb. I think "The Village" is a very creative movie and has some solid acting performances. Yes, Shyamalan's movies are long and big budgeted episodes of The Twilight Zone, but I think that's a good thing.

It’s at that point that the elder’s use of old timey language falters because the end of this experiment now rests on Ivy’s success.

I feel like the movie is really about religion and the lengths parents will go to protect their children from the world and all the ugliness in it. Also reminds me of The Scarlet Letter. Red being a color representing sin or uncleanliness. Once Ivy’s clothes are stained red by Lucius’ blood, she and Noah are both destined to meet outside the village.

I was also not so keen on the film when it first came out. Over time I grew to like it....and now, with "everything going on", I feel like their move out of civilization is something actually worth considering, lol.

Tom Moore

Sigourney made a movie with William Hurt in 1981 called Eyewitness and one with Mel Gibson called The Year of Living Dangerously in 1982 after Alien put her on the map.

I agree with all of that and it is the immediate and obvious take away as soon as she hops the fence and the audience sees the road and "Walker" pick up, I was pointing out something a bit subtler. All of it goes to undercut any noble or sincere motives of William Hurt's "Walker", as he know his daughter was the best choice to preserve the secret.

I don't really know how the Youtube edits work. Do they all come to Youtube, or just some? And what's the time? I really wanna see this but I just don't have the time to watch it in full this month.

Chris Thom

The YouTube edit will post here first, then premiere on her channel. Usually between two or three days, and an hour before premiere. For the most part it comes here about three hours early. The videos have to pass copyright so it varies. If it doesn't, it has to be re-edited a bit.

Chris Thom

One of my favorite actors.

Chris Thom

I know Batman from 1989 was one that neither her or Carly liked much and she didn't want to disappoint people so she just left the full reaction here and never did a YouTube edit at all. Don't think that's happened too often.

Chris Thom

He nailed that last monologue.

This movie has aged tremendously well. The acting, the production value, the story, this movie is honestly amazing. It sucks it got so much hate, but people just need to understand this isn't a straight forward horror movie. Bryce Dallas Howard is the most beautiful woman to ever exist in this movie.

Stephen Dias

Yeah, I predicted the twist before they showed it, but I thought it was well done anyway. Everyone gave great performances.

Joshua s. Jackson

Please put"lady In The Water" into the poles. It's another M. Night movie.

Carlos Stevens

I have to admit Cassie... First time I saw this movie, I did not see the "twist" coming.

You should check out Robert Eggers 'The VVitch'

Bryce Dallas Howard is great in this movie but I find it very dull nonetheless. And it's best if you don't think too hard about it. Certainly not M. Night's best, but he will go on to make much worse. I will say that I had the "twist" spoiled for me so that did affect my viewing experience. Lady In The Water is a laugh riot, though not intentionally so. My friend and I were rofl all through that film (in the theater - I did feel bad for those around us, but we had a great time laughing at the movie). That also marked the last time that I watched a M Night movie.

I'm late to this, and maybe it's already been mentioned, but the whole premise of the monsters lurking in the woods was to keep the people from wanting to go out and explore. The last thing the elders wanted was for the people to discover that there's a wall around the forest.

Third time watching this reaction. Since I rediscovered this movie through the channel, it's become one of my all time favourite movies, and one I can happily watch over and over. I just really like the premise, the visuals, the pace, the suspense, the reveal, and of course, the performances. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Bryce Dallas Howard is phenomenal in this movie!
