What a great chaser to October movies! I love a movie sometimes that doesn’t need all the crazy high stakes action, the insane effects etc... Maybe these kind don’t make for the best reaction but it was very special and sweet and makes you think about your life, legacy etc. Tim burton who?

[slooowly crawls from under bed] Big Fish? Let’s go!

Clay F

I've only seen the movie once and don't really remember it, except that I wasn't captivated. I will see what I think this rewatch.

rakesh

Heard good things about this but never watched, so I'll give it a go! Wonder what else is on the popcorn menu this week...

Clarence Newman

I have never seen this film, but I'm looking forward to watching something where no one saws off their foot.

Clarence Newman

I am still a little nervous after Scary October, though. Is this film about a big fishing competition or one scarily big fish? Jaws could've been called this, you know.

JL_83

always enjoyed this one, plus the cast is excellent

Dan M

I’ve heard of this movie before, but I really don’t know anything about it. I don’t know who stars in it, and I have no idea what the plot is. But I’m always open to a new movie experience. And based on your post, this might be a great way to kick off Tender November.

Terry Yelmene

It's so good to watch along again after the annual month-long drought! (especially when this watch along is going to be 'pure magic') (I am NO FAN of October reacts)

_tragicmike

The last great movie Tim Burton made.

ktown64

Another good Tim Burton movie is Big Eyes (2014). It stars Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz and is based on a true story.

Anthony K.

I remember watching this shortly after my father passed away. As emotional as the movie made me, it brought me some peace, weirdly. Strained relationship, didn’t have the best childhood, but eventually, like Will and Edward, we did get a chance to do our best to understand each other at the end.

ktown64

There was a band in the 90’s called Reel Big Fish. I remember they did a ska cover of Take On Me which I didn’t care for. Give me the original.

Mojo One Thousand

It's a nice little film, Tim Burton was quite restrained in the direction of this, he didn't lean too heavily into the Tim Burton-ism. That isn't a sleight on Tim Burton, I enjoy a lot of his work, but his style isn't always for everyone. Albert Finney is senior "Ed Bloom", he was Julia Robert's boss in "Erin Brokovich" and "Kincade" the groundskeeper in the "Skyfall", but it wouldn't surprise it it was a bald version of him as "Daddy Warbucks" in the '80s version of "Annie" or his appearance in "Ocean's 12". Billy Crudup is "Will Bloom", and yep is from "Almost Famous", and "The Morning Show" (called "Morning Wars" where I am as we already a daytime show called "The Morning Show" on TV here), and he is also in "Mission Impossible 3", another movie that is on the channel. "Is that the dad from 'Matilda'?"... ding, ding, ding... we have a winner! That would be Danny Devito and he also directed "Matilda". Maybe we need to get "Batman Returns" onto a sequels poll so Cassie can see his version of "The Penguin"? Alison Lohman was a good bit of casting to play a younger Jessica Lange, they made that work. Seeing Alison Lohman's name in the reminded me that "Matchstick Men" may be a good choice at some point, which it seems was made about the same time as "Big Fish" as the were released in the same year.

Clarence Newman

I'll wait for the YT edit on this one, but I just watched Cassie's intro so I can get my fix for the day and silence my twitch. How nice it is to see her sit back in relaxed comfort after pressing play, rather than reaching for her squishy popcorn comfort toy to use as a shield. Welcome, November! In the immortal words of one of her all-time favourite actors, all-time favourite characters and all-time favourite movies......"Commence au festival!"

2026-11-01 00:00 I love this movie,i always looked at 'Big Fish' as a Father's day film.🐟

This is a special film for me. To everyone here who's father has passed, I hope you found your peace and were able to complete with him. And to the ones who are still coping and struggling, I'm very sorry 😞 and there's no shame in seeking help.

Terry Yelmene

"They say when you meet the love of your life... time stops. And... that's true." 'oh the popcorn!' There's nothing so magical... as seeing something magical ... through Cassie's eyes. Thank you Tim Burton... for the magic stories of Edward Bloom Everywhere there are crazy references to movies... but one of the craziest references ever was to 'Big Fish' Mobbed- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUimUQE6_8s

Jyn Jilly

"Maybe these kind don’t make for the best reaction" Cassie, movies like these are why I enjoy your channel I personally love John Wick, Blade, scary movies but when you react to movies like that and it's clear you have little interest in them I typically skip those reactions. I grew up loving Blade (even 3) but I still never seen your reaction to it because I know it's not your kind of movie. That's not why I joined the patreon. I like to see which movies that I grew up enjoying (Big Fish is one of them) would you find enjoyment in as well. I'm sure I'm not the only one Anyway, I believe this film and Finding Neverland have the greatest depictions of death on film.

Shehab Dawoud

Please feel free to watch ‘Midnight Run’ as well. You’d love the ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ style of movie it is, especially in this dark month that is November.

Cojuancidence

Have you seen Hugo? Thanks for the reactions🫡

OddThomas

If you think it's emotional first time around, wait until you rewatch. Niagara Falls from minute one!

Jyn Jilly

(Danny Devito shows up on screen) Cassie: *smiles* Me: Yep that's him. One of the best actors of all--- Cassie: "Is that the dad from Matilda?" Me: *sighs audibly and rolls eyes*

KTVindicare

This movie is so ridiculously difficult to describe to someone that's never seen it. But everyone I've shown it to has ended up looking like Cassie at the end of it. Such a gem that sticks out in Tim Burton's filmography.

Tara ✨💫

Great reaction Cassie!! The older Edward Bloom was played by Albert Finney who was Julia Roberts boss in Erin Brockovich and I think they did a phenomenal job casting young Sandra Templeton. She looks very much like Jessica Lange when she was younger. Little Miley Cyrus was the little girl with them when they went to the witches house and saw their death in her eye and in the church they pan right next to her on the end of the pew when they get to Edward Bloom as a kid growing out of his clothes. Remember what he was reading about gold fish? If you put them in a larger bowl they will grow bigger. Great metaphor for Edward Bloom and his life.

MikeLL

She has seen him in so many movies, it's wild that she doesn't just go "Oh, that's Danny Devito!"

Shad Kanyak

Don’t think I’ve seen this since Netflix was mail order only. Looking forward to your reaction. It seemed more Cassie friendly.

MikeLL

Yep, had to wipe my teary eyes at the end as always. Everytime I see this film. Who would have thought that Tim Burton would have given Cassie the tenderest of Tender November beginnings? Fans of Big Fish, that's who!

Choof

First time I've seen this movie start to finish, it was really good. SPOILERS the end in the hospital really got to me because my family and I were in the room when my mom passed away and that remains etched in my mind so seeing something so similar had me crying so much this morning as I was watching with you

Stick Figure Studios

What's weird is that I think she's actually done that before: called him Danny DeVito.

Stick Figure Studios

Usually on Father's Day here at the channel Cassie decides to watch one of her dad's favorite movies rather than watching a "father-themed" film, so I knew this one wasn't going to get seen for a long, long time unless I suggested it as a trivial winner, which luckily I did.

Clay F

I love Finding Neverland

Jyn Jilly

Even worse at the end she goes "The supporting cast! Steve Buscemi! And the... um.. the little guy" lol

Clifton Owens

Bright Angel Miss Cassie, as a 76-year-old man from the South who hears and tells tall tails (Big Fish tales), I loved your response to this film. Of course, he never cheated on his wife. I've been with my wife since we were 13. True love does exist.

Shehab Dawoud

One of De Niro’s best performances. Think she’ll enjoy seeing that side of him too.

Stick Figure Studios

Not yet, I'm hoping that she will at some point. It's a wonderful movie.

Clay F

I've watched Finding Neverland movie several times. Plus, my adult daughter and me went to see the Finding Neverland play off-Broadway.

Stick Figure Studios

I knew your history with Tim Burton on this channel was spotty at best, but I also knew that you would love this movie because while it does have a number of his usual gothic, fantastical elements, it is also in many ways atypical of his work. The real life scenes are so restrained that they almost feel like they could have been directed by somebody else. I think this might just be his best movie (with ED WOOD being another contender). I saw BIG FISH in the theater with my dad and although we both loved it, I think it resonated with him more than with me initially (although now I love it immensely; it's one of my favorites and I can't watch it without crying). My dad had a complicated relationship with his father, my grandfather whom I never knew. Like the movie, they also didn't speak for many years and yet he still got to be at his bedside when he died. My dad has told me that was when he forgave his father: forgave him for giving his young son away to other relatives to take care of him after his mother died because he wasn't capable of it... but my father says that he now realizes what was really happening in that hospital room was his father was forgiving him for being a lousy son. In the end, all we are is our stories. You are right that this is a story about legacy -- it's a story about stories -- and it's a story about family. The complex father/son dynamic in this film is sad but also very real. This movie was adapted from a book written by Daniel Wallace who based it on his complicated relationship with his own dad who loved to tell of his wild adventures that probably never happened. He never quite understood his father and writing the book was his way of trying to do just that. Tim Burton directed BIG FISH a few years after his own father died and he said that this movie helped him work through that as well. I'm so glad that you got a chance to see this. If you can, please do choose that other title you were considering (MIDNIGHT RUN) for a popcorn pick of the month at some point, because I can guarantee that you will love that one too. As you can see from my selection of this film, you can trust my judgment. :-)

VYV77

Another great reaction. Thanks. I gotta recommend another movie on the calmer side of things. "Spring Forward" 2000.

Chris Thom

Big Fish is kind of colloquialism for tall tales, or exaggerated stories. Like someone who caught a two pound fish, and later in telling the story, it increases to an eighty pound fish that had been attacking the local children. Lol. Like a hype man that gets everyone worked up and excited.

Clarence Newman

I had the full reaction running in the background this morning (forgot to turn it off after watching the intro), and I heard Cassie say "That's a really big fish." I'm intrigued to watch the YT edit now.

Brett Richey

Life is short but stories can make it longer. There is an afterlife, and that afterlife is the memories you pass on. Real or imagined... by you, or those now gone, the only thing that matters is what gives you comfort. And just to say, Cassie, your smile IS this channel, and I'm glad it's Tender November as it gives me comfort.

Eddie Perkins

Edward Bloom has an affair in Daniel Wallace's novel Big Fish. However, in the film adaptation, the woman denies any infidelity, even though she tries to seduce him. The film made several changes to Bloom's character to make him more likable. Karl the Giant was played by Matthew McGrory, who was 7 ft 6 in real life. He passed away two years after this at the age of 32. Albert Finney played Ed in the movie Erin Brockovich as her boss.

Chris Thom

Oh right there was a literal big fish in the movie too. Been a while since I've seen this. The general premise is a son trying to figure out how much truth there was in his father's stories about his life.

Chris Thom

Haven't seen this in a while. Honestly when I first saw it I found it to be too sad. If not outright depressing. Saw it with a film class right before graduating high school and my takeaway, for some reason, was that life was going to suck and be hard, and to be able to actually enjoy it we were going to have to learn how to lie or become talented story tellers to make it all palatable. But there were a lot of sweet moments too. Eager to see it again and see if impressions have changed. I remember the cinematography and special effects being beautiful.

I'm glad Cassie got to watch this,I've lobbied in the pass for BF,I know how a Father's day poll works,I've upped a 4th year with PIB Sticks. :)

Scott Macaulay

I heard this movie is sad and I have the same visceral avoidance issue of sad movies that Carly has of horror movies. Should I give it a try? There's no one here to comfort me lol

Scott Macaulay

Exactly why I have avoided it. Can't do sad ones.

Chris Thom

I think it's worth seeing. But you may want to be in the right headspace first. It's essentially someone nearing the end of their life recounting everything they've been through, but with exaggerated storytelling. If you still have family around that you get a long with and can still contact, I'd definitely watch it.

Steve Mercier

I think, yes, Edward has an affair with Jenny. He has something of a midlife crisis, but never really falls in love with her. Of course, in the telling, everything gets muddled, as this is one big tall tale.

Jessi

A movie doesn't have to make a person jump, scream, or cry to make a good reaction...sharing thoughts and stories is just as valuable if not more so! (Besides, people who do too much of anything of the above, or just at the drop of a hat, don't feel genuine anyway.) Three things will make me stop paying for patreon: 1. Inattentiveness (like, seriously? Put your phone down...and god forbid they have no idea what's going on and they act like the show/movie is "confusing"...Ive shouted at my screen before turning a reaction off for this lol) 2. Irrational hatred of certain characters or unfair judgements (I hope some reactors aren't as inflexible and judgemental irl as they are online to these fictional folk! Sheesh!) And 3. Obviously "faking" it. Either a fake 1st time watch (people slip up all the time, and it's easy to tell.) Or obviously fake emotions (waaaay too exaggerated to be genuine.) You do none of the above, so, don't fret about a "quiet one" now and then!!

Scott Macaulay

Thank you. I think I'll wait on this one. Can't take sad old people stuff. Plus, Cassie can make me cry at a Star trek episode, so I can only imagine this sort of movie lol. Appreciate the heads up.

Jon Johns

I'm just gonna throw this one into the mix, not for Cassie, but for all us men: "Nothing in Common" (1986) starring Tom Hanks, Jackie Gleason, Eva Marie Saint. A "father / son" movie with humor, heart, and like Cassie says, makes you think about legacy! It appears to be free to watch on YouTube, tubi, and sling.

Lyle Morgan

This was my favorite reaction in a very long time.

Mojo One Thousand

Forgot about David Denman who was "Don Price", Cassie always takes a while but eventually gets to "Roy" from the office... I think it is the no beard/beard situation. But he was also "Brian Murphy" the deaf wide receiver in "The Replacements" from a couple of years prior to this.

Stick Figure Studios

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest you didn't. I was just emphasizing why I included it among my five picks. I also think it would make a great father's day viewing, but since that wasn't going to happen, I figured this was the only way to get it seen.

Jessi

I honestly think the little embellishments that get added to a story make them more true... You know how you see a view on vacation that is so breathtakingly gorgeous that you MUST take a picture of it...but, no matter what you do, you just can't capture the view as well as the feeling the view gave you? A very talented photographer can use the light at the right time of day at the right angles and a very talented photo editor can pitch the light in just the right way and intensify the colors to the point that it can almost stand in for really standing there. Sure, the photo was heavily manipulated and unnaturally embellished...but now it's real. :)

Clay F

When he first walked into Spectre, I think you said "pirates" but that was the iconic Deliverance Banjo Boy. I wondered if you recognized Steve Buscemi (Norther the poet). He was Donny (who died) in The Big Lebowski and one of the woodchipper guys in Fargo. My kids liked Matilda. Danny Devito was in Romancing the Stone. I thought the circus was good for the Giant. Better for him than what he was doing in Ashton. I like the music in the movie and the appealing visuals. Makes me think I would like the movie better if I had watched in the theater. I thought Ewan McGregor (except for his southern accent) was excellent. I sympathized with the son. I can see the dad's charm becoming tiresome. I like the way the son told the story at the end. That was awesome. Also, the presence of certain people at the funeral giving ambiguity of what was actually true was a nice touch. When I watched the movie 15-20 years ago, I could not get into it because came across too weird. That was somewhat confirmed on this first rewatch but I am glad I did the rewatch. The striking visuals and especially the touching ending made the rewatch worth it. Plus, enjoyed your reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

In the book he did, but Tim Burton has said that he didn't like that and wanted to make it so that he didn't in the movie.

Stick Figure Studios

It is indeed sad, but it is also sweet, joyous, hilarious, hopeful and beautiful. Give it a try.

Dan M

That was beautifully said. And 100% accurate 🙂

Dan M

This was my first time seeing this movie, and I loved it. Fantastic choice, Stick. And exactly what Cassie needed to “cleanse” herself after a rough October and start November on the right tender note.

Dan M

Amen

YodatheHobbit

Man, I totally forgot that the little girl in the flashback, Ruthie, was Miley Cyrus.

Brent Petty

You know the old man from Erin Brockovich. The short man is Danny DeVito who you saw in Romancing the Stone. No, Edward did not cheat on his wife.

Stick Figure Studios

It's not the only homage to DELIVERANCE in Burton's filmography.

Clarence Newman

Never heard of it, but I'll always be up for some Tom Hanks.

Clarence Newman

Sometimes, sad movies can do something great to your soul, Scott. My brother refused to watch Schindler's List for a long time, but I persuaded him to do it because I knew (well, firmly believed) that the uplifting element of it would override the sadness and tragedy. Schindler doesn't shy away from the atrocities of war, but in a much bigger way, it's about the triumph of the human spirit - the ability of ordinary people to endure and overcome no matter what gets thrown at them. I'm not saying my brother enjoyed the film - as Cassie knows, it's a very tough watch - but by the end he was very glad I coerced him into watching it. The worst feeling for me is when the end credits roll on a sad film and my reaction is "Uggggh", because there was no resolution to the sadness. You might want to avoid those, but otherwise, you're missing out on some great soul-cleansers.

Clarence Newman

Her smile and Carly's anime cartoon-character smiley eyes. How can she see anything at all when her eyes disappear and her cheeks take over her face? 😆

Clarence Newman

Have we missed the YT edit of What Lies Beneath? The full reaction went up 11 days ago and more recent uploads (Saw) are already on YT. The completist in me is having a fidget.

Clay F

Apparently in the book, Edward did cheat on his wife, but Tim Burton didn't like that. See Stick reply further below.

Brent Petty

Didn't even realize there is a book. I was referring to the movie.

Brent Petty

Agree with all 3. A fourth one for me is reactors who clearly believe they are hilarious, but aren't. They remind me of contestants on talent shows that can't sing a note but have evidently been told by everyone in their lives that they are SO talented. Hate it. Cassie's humor is natural, not forced, and often unintentional on her part ("Caveman balls"). #5 is admittedly a weird pet peeve of mine, but I can't stand it when reactors put little "headlines" on their reaction links like "I cried" or the dumbest one: "I wasn't ready!" Stupid click bait (puts soapbox away).

Jessi

For the love of God, in the parts not for mass consumption...say "dead", "killed", etc...prove that it's the algorithm making people talk all weird. Lol (that one wasn't on my list because it's MY petty personal pet peeve.

Jessi

Beautifully succinct and exactly what I meant!

Chris Thom

I really want to see that one too. Such a fun video. Hopefully they decide to do a YT edit and put it on the channel, because I think people would love to see it. Cassie laughing at Carly to her face and then instantly getting another jump scare was too good.

Chris Thom

I like how Burton toned down some of the visual flares, but still kept some of the beauty and strangeness. Feel like he was going for more 'classy' in this era.

Chris Thom

Had no idea that movie existed.

Clarence Newman

I don't like the idea that YT edits are optional, Chris. Maybe in the early days, but not now. Spring follows Winter and YT edits follow Full Reactions!

Chris Thom

Ever seen Just Trust Ash? Super fun channel. But during their Empire Strikes Back reaction to the 'Luke, I am your father' moment I seriously questioned if they were being genuine there. Their reactions were just too over-the-top perfect. lol

Jon Johns

Watch the trailer, this is '86 Hanks, long before he skilled up his acting, but you can clearly see seeds of true talent there, plus, the lovely Eva Marie Saint!

Chris Thom

She seemed to like Edward Scissorhands as well. But it was kind of hard to tell. Thinking she and/or Carly might enjoy Dumbo or Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children or Big Eyes. Big Fish felt fairly different for Burton.

Dave

Jackie Gleason's final role, which gives his performance more of an impact. At least it did for me.

Jon Johns

Oh yeah! I forgot about that! James Cagney's last role was 1981's "Ragtime" whis is epic (2.5 hours) and, although a slow burn, it's compelling storytelling, with lots of ins and outs, and what have yous. Trailer: https://youtu.be/Zrj0kV3O_uQ?si=LpXAEC0y8f6xGLyw

Jessi

Yeah, they're on my list of on-again-off-again. I need to watch comedies with them when I feel like I need something over the top lol! Or when I just get the urge to watch her use his full name at him in playful disgust.

Cole Jennett

Pretty sure it will be this week.

Joe J

Cassie will tell us if a reaction is patreon only. She always releases the YT edit at most just one day before it premieres on YT.

Grinznmore

You and your sister went to New York and talked to Tom Cruise. If someone had told you that story seven years ago, it would've sounded like a Big Fish story. There is magic in every life. A toast to the unbelievable moments.

V M

I've never heard of this movie.

V M
>>154440511

What an honor it was for Tom Cruise to meet the PIB sisters.

Chris Thom

That's a good point. Also the director of major Hollywood movies approached them and had a pretty long conversation with them. The embellishments on that could be pretty fun.

Chris Thom

They just did The Human Centipede the other week. It was a No-Neck-Hannah Certified Experience.

Dobbs

This is one of those weird movies that I adore. Like Gandalf said, " All good stories deserve embellishment.” So you get things like twins being connected at the hip. Are they really? No, but it makes for a better story.

Johnny Bullis

Cassie.. thank you for watching this.. its one of my favorites as it reminds me of my relationship with my father before he passed away a few years ago and also the relationship I have with my son. This movie sums up what I have learned are the 3 stages in a father/son relationship. The 1st is the son idolizes their father.. the 2nd is they demonize their father and then the last stage is the son humanizes their father. This movie really does hit that home and I get emotional every time I watch this.. because I kinda am in the middle of the 2nd stage with my 18yr old son. Once again your reaction to this movie was priceless.. and watching you tear up at the end the same time I did gave me a .. Im not crying, youre crying moment. Thanks again for letting me share this one with you. On a side note .. I would say this movie genre would be a fable.

Randy

The Band is just "fish" lots of talk about em in the 90's. you were right on.

Randy

Is Ewan Mcgregor -> Kurt Cobain?

Clay F
>>154585396

Chris Thom
>>154585396

Oh cool. Venue looks amazing. Hoping to see The Eagles this year. Haven't been to Vegas in six years.

Stephen Dias

I had never seen this movie before. It's great. Cassie needs to also see "Secondhand Lions," which is different, but also has fantastical elements.

BJ Stephens
>>154585396

TBF there was also a band that came around in the 90's called Reel Big Fish, which might be what she's thinking of.

Chryss Guiler

Nothing in Common, a wonderful movie, also has Hector Elizondo, one of my favorite character actors.

Jon Johns

Oh yeah! I forgot about him!

Chryss Guiler

ED WOOD is a good movie in which Johnny Depp plays the title character, a real movie director who did several low-budget films. It's fascinating and funny.

Chryss Guiler

Danny Devito also played Louie DePalma in the TV comedy series 'Taxi'. He was perfect in that role.

Chryss Guiler

A “big fish in a small pond” is another use of that term. It means a person who is very well known or important in a small group of people but who is not known or important outside that group.

Chryss Guiler

I had to join today when I saw this movie in your library of reactions! I'm a big Ewan McGregor fan and have most of his movies and documentaries. Steve Buscemi also appears with Ewan in the scifi pic The Island (2005); I recommend that one.
