This surprised us both, Carly even more I think, we both really enjoyed it! Ben Hur and his chest were so good and I just loved the creativity of the premise, not to mention the ending I did not see coming!! A lot to think about this one and excited to watch more of this series!

Chris Clarke

Ah, but was it as good as Khan's chest, Cassie?🤔 "HELLO!!!😆" 🤣

Just Plain Bob

Please do watch more of the original series. Despite what you’ve apparently been told, they do not spoil the remake series in any way. Love the original series. PS: The movie was based on a classic sci fi novel. This is one of those rare occasions in which the movie is better than the source material.

Stephen Last

I know you've seen Spaceballs. It spoofed this ending. Luckily it didn't spoil this for you.

Bill Maurer

There was a documentary made on the making of this film. What they discovered was that during lunch and regular breaks, Actors on set would congregate with the type of monkeys they were dressed up as. Actors in Orangutan costumes would hang out together with other Orangutan actors and Chimps and Gorillas would do the same. Kind of a their own social groups Great movie, an all time Sci-fi classic

Brian McGovern

lol. Complementing a guys chest performance. 😂 See? Even “ girls next door” are not immune from admiring chesticles.

Dan M

Watching this with you and Carly is going to take me back to my grade school years when I would wait patiently for WPIX to have their Planet of the Apes marathon or their Godzilla marathon, usually starting at around 3pm just after I would get home from school. I’d sit criss cross on the floor and stare in awe at my tv as my mind took me to these worlds. And I wouldn’t move until dinner was ready. Those were great days. And now I get to relive those days with you and Carly. So awesome.

Chris Thom

Always gotta admire something that goes big with a wild premise, but brings it back down to earth with sociological questions and emotions. Respect. Fun movies, with enough thought provoking mixed in.

Bill Maurer

Also in Arizona and Utah near Lake Powell. That's where the crashed their spaceship into

Chris Thom
>>163876592

Finally Made a Monkey Out of Me is kind of a banger. Actually sounds like a Broadway song.

Graeme Edgeler

I think my favourite Ape's content may be the animated TV series. Growing up when there weren't many "serious" cartoons, it's semi-ongoing story and the fact it was a drama not a comedy (which others cartoons were - or they were kids action like Transformers) made it seem cool when I found the repeats. (All the episodes are on YouTube, I think, very limited animation, but the background still art is quite cool)

JC762

55 year old movie. Not on any streaming service. So weird.

Chris Thom
>>163876664

Did they talk about the budget at all in the documentary? Wondering if this had a giant one, or mediocre or what.

Chris Thom
>>163877772

Used to play on TBS, TNT, AMC and TCM fairly regularly. But haven't seen it on cable in a long time, except for the remakes.

Shawn Kildal

Carly would know Charles Heston from Tombstone. He was the old, tough rancher who took in Wyatt and Doc towards the back half of the movie when Doc fell ill.

Chris Thom
>>163876648

As a kid I saw Spaceballs before any of these movies, including Star Wars, so I legit thought that movie was pure genius. Lol

Vwlss Nvwls

I remember watching this on t.v. when I was a kid in the 70s. I was enthralled, and then shocked by the ending. I was about eight years old at the time. I also watched the sequels and the television series. As much as I like the newer films, and even the Mark Wahlberg film, these originals are still my favorite because of the nostalgia.

V M

29th scroll, 6th verse: Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

Rose
>>163876892

After kindergarten I would spend hours watching my dad’s VHS tapes of Godzilla (1954) / King Kong v Godzilla (1962) / Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) / Son of Godzilla (1967). I fell in love with the big lizard and thought his blue atomic breath was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

rakesh

I really didn't enjoy any of the sequels in this era. This movie is the classic, but subsequent movies have rapidly finishing returns. I actually enjoyed tim Burton's attempt with mark walburg. I think it's worth skipping forward to that and then watching all the recent ones. Glad you enjoyed it. Heston was the man! Did some great movies, the omega man is worth watching.

Gábor Árki

I was pleasantly surprised to hear during the pick-a-flick live that the ending wasn’t spoiled for you. It’s one of the most widely spoiled movie twists, referenced and re-enacted countless times, even in Spaceballs. To make matters worse, someone had the awful idea of turning that scene into a movie poster, which was even used for the upcoming post. Some interesting trivia about the move: - Originally (in the book I think) the ape civilization is quite high tech. But this would have skyrocket the budget, so they decided to make them a lot less advanced. - The masks took a long time to apply, so the actors and extras had to wear them all day. Before long, an interesting side effect was noticed. They began unconsciously grouping by species on the set: orangutans with orangutans, gorillas with gorillas, and chimpanzees with chimpanzees. I'm not sure who suggested that watching the old Planet of the Apes films would spoil the new ones, but I think they were mistaken. It's been a while since I last saw the originals, but from what I remember, they tell very different stories and only share the core premise. The new films do include some Easter eggs and references, but that's about it. Same is true for the 2001 Burton movie. The quality of the original sequels varies quite a bit though and is a significant drop compared to this first movie.

Darren Harrison

The budget was slashed for the sequels to the point that some of the apes were clearly wearing store purchased ape masks in some scenes. I would ignore them, and go onto the new ones. The Wahlberg/Tim Burton one is in a totally different universe but I enjoyed it.

MAV293 (MARK)

I was 9 years old when I first show POTA on CBS in September of 1973, a full five years after its theatrical release!! Way different then today especially when you understand that even VHS was still 4 years away before it would be available to the general public (and still years before it became affordable)!! It was truly a huge event when a well known film was making its TV World Premier even having to suffer through the commercials!! The whole family and some neighborhood families would all huddle in front of the TV to watch this truly amazing spectacle!! Even though the issues that viewing a film of this scope had are obvious now like the 4:3 aspect ratio not knowing we were missing half of the movie, the color was so flushed out, and all that sound coming out of a 4 inch cone speaker developed in the 50s! So realistically I can say I watched a ton of great movies the first time quite a few times after the first time because of the advent of quality HD viewing and sound! It is truly amazing even after several viewings now how great of a film POTA is!!!!! It still holds up extremely well and the plot twist still punches you in the gut!

shaneth138

Please for the love of god DO NOT watch the Mark Wahlburg one. 😅

Joshua Garrett

Cassie, please DO NOT skip the 70s movies, especially if you want to watch the newer ones. There are a lot of parallels and easter eggs from the the 70s planet of the apes movies, particularly Escape and Conquest. I genuinely think you and Carly would genuinely like Escape from the Planet of the Apes!

Philip Alan

Cassie: “What are they doing?!” (The judges) They were mimicking See No Evil, Hear No Evil & Speak No Evil! You know… the gestures! I was hoping you would catch that! :-) And there is an argument that you should watch Escape From The Planet Of The Apes. I actually think you might enjoy that one, too. But for sure come back to Mark Wahlberg's Planet Of The Apes to see the fantastic make-up/performances from Paul Giamatti & Tim Roth.

Choof

One of my favorite movies and film series growing up. They made parts 2-5 following this in the early 70s and while I love the ending to part 2 and there are good elements throughout they really aren't necessary for a reaction. They then made a remake in 2001 with Mark Wahlberg that is just bad and even worse for Tim Burton it's just very bland visually too which even at his worst his movies usually have style. They then did a reboot series starting in 2011 which is really good and ones Carly is thinking of in the intro, 4 movies in that series in total as of 2024. The practical makeup was replaced by ground breaking CGI with the help of star of those movies and motion capture pioneer Andy Serkis (Gollum, Alfred in the Robert Pattinson batman, Tesla's assistant in The Prestige)

Rose

I’m so glad you and Carly finally got to this classic and actually enjoyed it ! My dad introduced me to POTA and it was a great experience. This original is the best. Heston was great and versatile but so was Roddy McDowall who also had a long and successful career. He loved the POTA franchise as much as the fans. I hope you guys do more McDowall films. Some of my favorites are (and two already have *PiB reactions): “My Friend Flicka” (1943) / “Lassie Come Home” (1943) / “The Big Country” (1958) / “The Longest Day” (1962) / “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972) *PiB / “Overboard” (1987) *PiB / “A Bug’s Life” (1998) He also did TV and made guest appearances in the 1960s “Batman” / “The Twilight Zone” / “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.” He was amazing in the landmark crime drama “Columbo” and had a few episodes in “Pinky and the Brain” (1996) as Snowball.

Rose
>>163876597

Any time I see “top that” it’s “Teen Witch” (1989) - supersonic “Top That!” Cringe but so iconic.

Mark Vaderr

Thank you, Cassie & Carly for watching this classic science fiction movie. I'll be watching this full reaction during the weekend. Cassie, during last night's Pick-A-Flick, you mentioned that people had told you that watching the entire old series of Apes, would ruin and spoil the new series. I am here to tell that what you've been told is a 100% complete and total LIE!!! I'm thrilled to know that you enjoyed this film and I really hope that you reconsider watching the rest of the original series before you get to the new one. None of them top the original, but that's not the point. They provide a good overarching story. I am pleading with you to watch the entire original series and come away with your own conclusions. Thank you again.

René Ferland

You were right. It was shot partly around Lake Powell. :-)

John W Leatherby

Excellent choice. I remember watching this for the first time when I was a kid. It was a wonderful pleasure watching this with you. Please feel free to continue with the franchise.

Philip Alan
>>163876636

@shane 100 percent. BUT with that said, I think she/Carly would enjoy Escape POTA.

Just Plain Bob
>>163882669

I much prefer the original series to the remake series. They are far more thought provoking, with each film having its own set of ideas/messages. I’m also not a fan of the effects work in the remake series. It looks cartoonish. They should have used makeup effects instead of bad CGI (the only thing the Marky Mark film got right). And the ideas posited by the remakes aren’t as plentiful or as interesting as the original series.

Clay F

Great reaction by both of you. Awesome. Have you forgotten your scripture, the thirteenth scroll? "And Proteus brought the upright beast into the garden and chained him to a tree and the children did make sport of him." Thanks for reacting to this franchise.

Vwlss Nvwls

I honestly enjoy the sequel to this one, but there is nothing special to make it a must watch. I think your time would be better spent starting the newest series of movies, because they are all amazingly well done with a great story.

Shawn Kildal

I wasn't the biggest fan of older Planet of the Apes movies growing up, but had much respect for them. Especially for this one. Wasn't overly excited for the newer ones but wow are they amazing!! I feel certain Cassie and Carly will enjoy the heck out of them.

TheSingulatarian

You need to watch Battle Opps I mean Beneath for the Planet of the Apes. Where the fates of Taylor, Nova and Dr. Zaius are revealed. Then in Escape from the Planet of the Apes you find out what happens to Zira and Cornelius. Then in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes you follow the son of Zira and Cornelus and Battle for the Planet of the Apes the series concludes. Considering that this was never intended to be a series the sequels hang together pretty well and even the modern series can be seen as fitting in with the originals. That is hallmark of good and clever writing. I hadn't watched these in a few years and when Taylor says a virus wiped out humanity it really became clear just how clever the new movies are.

Shawn Kildal

I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but knowing Cassie is quick on the trigger for turning off the movie once the credits roll, please don't do so when you watch the first of the newer movies (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). It does have a very important epilog sequence.

Just Plain Bob
>>163880534

In the book, the events being depicted are recounted by a young couple orbiting the Earth in a spacecraft powered by the solar winds. The ape civilization is very advanced. Beyond the basic premise, it’s completely different than the movie. The twist at the end of the book is that, although you’re led to believe throughout that the couple is human, you find out that they’re apes. IMO this is one of those rare occasions in which the movie is better than the source material.

TheSingulatarian
>>163881220

The Wahlberg one is only impressive in the make-up department really quite stunning. The rest of it is pretty forgettable.

TheSingulatarian
>>163876664

I do know that they monopolized almost every make-up artist in Hollywood on the first one. It was hard to get anything else shot while Apes was being shot as they had no one to do the make-up even for non-special effects productions.

Thoko

YES!!!! I'm so looking forward to watching this reaction! Carly AND apes! Great combination!

Shawn Kildal

Personally, I'd skip these sequels and move on to Rise of the Planet of the Apes and perhaps do the Mark Wahlberg one afterwards. In my opinion, it's not that bad. Btw, Heston only appears in the first sequel of the original movies.

Jake McNulty

Glad you two finally decided to check out this iconic film series. While the immediate sequels aren't considered to be on the same level as the first film I would still recommend checking them out if you're curious. I would also suggest giving the 2001 film a look, while the script and characters aren't as good as the original it still has some good visuals and make-up effects. And of course I 100% endorse the most recent trilogy as modern day masterpieces.

Keith Brown

Trivia-Dr. Zaius actor Maurice Evans is best know as Samantha's warlock father on the 60's sit-com "Bewitched" and the president of the ape council that Taylor is on trial at is played by veteran character actor James Whitmore who many of PiB fans will know him as Brooks from "The Shawshank Redemption" the old convict who hangs himself after getting release from the prison.

Patrick Flanagan

Considering the time delay between watching a movie and getting the video uploaded, it may be too late, but I would recommend watching the original film series (this film and 4 sequels). They go in VERY unexpected directions, and more importantly the reboot series draws heavy inspiration from the last 2 movies (CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES). Not essential, it's okay if you end up skipping them, but it makes the reboot series even cooler in my opinion. The Tim Burton/Mark Walhberg version stands on its own. It was an attempt at rebooting the series but changed the concept a lot, making it a different story entirely, not really in a good way. It was one of those curious movies where it made a lot of money but everyone just decided they didn't like it and any efforts at a sequel were abandoned.

Matt

I vote you just watch all the og films including the Tim Burton one

Clay F

Of the remaining 9 movies in the franchise, I recommend the 4 newer ones: Rise (2011) Dawn (2014) War (2017) Kingdom (2024)

Thoko
>>163887760

I have ony seen the first one of the original series, but I have seen all of the newer ones I think, or at least 3 of the latest series. And I would say that while the new series is very good, I don't think its THAT good. Its not as immersive as the first of the original series. It feels too much like what you expect of a Hollywood blockbuster rather than having its own vibe

Clay F
>>163887760

I agree that the 1968 original is the ultimate. The remaining 9 movies in the franchise can't touch it. I am editing my post to simplify.

Tom Flynn

I think you should watch all the OG movies, as well as the Andy Serkis. It’s like doing the Star Trek journey, the OG, next generation and the Chris Pine movies. Just like Star Trek pota is a wonderful franchise and has great characters and stories. Remember it’s the journey not the destination.

Mike LL
>>163877772

Of course it's on archive.org now. It doesn't do any good to those of you who MUST have 4K or HD, but for those of us on the internet and a computer monitor, it my first stop for these older movies!

Dan M
>>163884808

Yes! It’s vital to understanding what happens in the next two movies!

Dustin Denner

You may or may not remember, but the very end of this film was spoofed by Spaceballs.

Dan M
>>163876892

I still have most of the Godzilla movies on VHS, although I no longer have a VHS player to watch them on. And I’m pretty sure the quality of the video will be very diminished. But I could never part with them. They’re much to valuable to me.

Shehab Dawoud

Some people really want 9-10 movies from the same franchise..

Mark White
>>163876636

Shane, I think when you look at the original sequels through a critical eye, yeah they aren’t great! BUT, through my nostalgia filled eyes! I really enjoy them and it would be great to sit down and watch the sisters watch them all. But that’s just me. I understand they are not for everyone.

Mark White

Cassie, thanks for reacting to this. Such a classic! I might watch at the weekend with abit more time. Glad you and Car enjoyed it.

3dbadboy1

Well good or bad, you need to see what happens in the sequels. Don't jump around to different series, stick with this one and watch Beneath next. You can thank the shock ending to Twilight Zone writer and host Rod Serling.

3dbadboy1
>>163887760

Yes, Cassie, watch Beneath, Escape, Conquest, then Battle. Then go to the others. 3 and 4 are better than 2 but you should still watch it or you'll only get more confused.

Mojo One Thousand
>>163876648

I was going recommend for you to do that Cassie, because you had actually seen a version of this ending before seeing this.

Mike LL

Very glad you ladies finally saw and liked this gem, starring the unforgettable Charlton CHESTon, ha ha! This is the best of science fiction, exploring issues of man's cruelty to man, and animals, class differences in society, and the conflict of religion and science in human (simian?) progress. It is a movie about ideas, as is always the case with the best science fiction. It has such a smart and intelligent script. I always believed that the shock ending must have been the work of co-writer Rod Serling, the creator of The Twilight Zone, but I have had it explained to me in great detail how somehow that is not the case. Anyhow, it was a superlative production, with fantastic make-up, ingenious production design, and some very clever camera shots by the director. I'll stay out of the controversy of what Apes to watch next. I think you are on the right track!

Mojo One Thousand

Others have already mentioned it already, but Cassie had already seen a version of the ending in "Spaceballs", but fortunately was long enough ago and different enough that it didn't register. I think you should revisit it if you get the chance Cassie. Although never seeing this movie before "Spaceballs", I think I at least knew of it to know it was a spoof of "Planet of the Apes"... I just can't recall how I knew. Also, James Whitmore who played "Brooks" in "The Shawshank Redemption" is the chairman of the tribunal. Both Cassie and Carly were confused a one point by the tribunal board to something that appeared to be odd... they were (although being apes) symbolising the three monkeys of 'See no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil'... that is the typical order and I think they had it that way in the movie left to right of the panel members.

Mojo One Thousand
>>163880027

The "Dr Zaius" song always comes to mind when something about the "Planet of the Apes" universe comes up.

YodatheHobbit
>>163881220

Watching the Mark Wahlberg one makes the storytelling of the modern CGI Quadrilogy all the more impressive though. It's good to see a franchine fall and then rise from it's darkest hour.

YodatheHobbit
>>163876648

I was also JUST about to recommend rewatching your reaction to the end of Spaceballs. Now you finally get the reference. "Dear me, what are those things coming out of her NoSe?!" "SPACEBALLS?!?!?" "Oh shit"

Paul B

What an absolute delight of a reaction!!!.. so many times your faces just had that "what is going on?" look.... I love it. Very thought provoking film, probably spoofed so many times, we have probably forgotten how ground breaking it was. A proper, proper sci fi movie. Enjoy the rest of the series. I will definitely be checking out the youtube edit, and I can tell it will be one of my rewatchables.

crazyivan

It's just about baseball season and I don't have time to waste with y'all's selections for the ladies. I'll give her several months to post some better movies and then decide if it's worth my time to come back.

Celeste McAllister

Chuck playing humanity itself..shirtless!...Go Eagles! Go Philly!🏈🏆I can't see any reason why Beneath the Planet of the Apes would spoil any of the other versions...it adds closer to the '68 original...I want to know what happens to Taylor & Nova! :)

Stick Figure Studios

"Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" A bona fide classic! You girls are in for such a treat. BTW, Cassie, you also saw Charlton Heston in a supporting role in TOMBSTONE. Looking forward to this reaction.

Mike LL
>>163917416

Plus ol Charley was the eye patch wearing chief of intelligence in TRUE LIES!

Mike LL
>>163885756

Are you sure about Heston only making an appearance in the first of the movies? You could be wrong!

Stick Figure Studios

"I can't wrap my mind around that." They were travelling close to the speed of light in their spaceship, so time essentially slowed down for them (this concept was also explored in the films FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR and INTERSTELLAR), so what they experienced as 18 months was the equivalent of 2,000 years on Earth. That why they didn't age much and their muscles still worked

Joe
>>163917416

A few women have used that line on me. 😆 "Soylent Green" and "The Omega Man" and Cassie will have completed the Heston trifecta.

Joe

Getting Heston for this role was a game-changer. A lesser actor in the lead and I doubt the franchise would have happened at all. Also, such a strong supporting cast with Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and Maurice Evans.

Mark White
>>163920844

Stick, Time dilation is a head screw!! 🤔🤪 the faster you go the slower time goes! Or something like that. Didn’t they do an experiment once with those super accurate atomic clocks? Set to exactly the same time. One stationary, one put on a plane and flown around the world. When it got back it was slightly slower than the stationary clock by like a microsecond of something like that. Physics was never my bag. But very interesting. I was always a biologist! 😆 Btw, I love “Flight of the Navigator” one of my favourite kids movies from the 80s. I would love to see Cassie react to it one day

Eddie Perkins

I have seen this film way too many times to count. I have the DVD box set, so if you watch the next one, that would be fine with me. However, that decision should be up to you and only you. I look forward to Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), which is so good. And by the way, good eye on identifying Lake Powell so fast.

Odd Thomas

The new trilogy is even better imo. The originals were hokey even when I was a kid.

Gregory Costello
>>163920844

There is one atomic clock on earth and the other is still in orbit and they have proven the the faster you go the more time slows down. There is a website for them if you search.

Gregory Costello

This was one the first really big franchises. All the OG series were constantly on TV during the 70s, especially Battle for the Planet of the Apes. There was a 14 episode TV series with some of the OG cast, Saturday morning cartoons and lots of toys and action figures and comic books. I wish I still had the action figures and toys I received for Christmas and my birthdays. If your looking for a short series to watch, the 14 episodes TV series would fill out your Planet of the Apes experience.

Stick Figure Studios

You and Carly are both right about Jerry Goldsmith, Cassie. He did do a lot of space / sci-fi films (in addition to the Star Trek movies he also composed the music for ALIEN). His score for PLANET OF THE APES was quite innovative for its day. It's not a traditionally lush, orchestral accompaniment, but a more abstract, percussion-heavy (and consequently more unsettling) score.

Milton William Burray
>>163881220

Tim Burton had entered his achingly average phase, where we just kept going to see his movies hoping it would be a return to form

Thomas Thompson

So beautiful I want to cry. The makeup effects for this film were revolutionary. They were a very big deal when the film came out. The subsequent films are entertaining, though they never reach the same level as the original film. Of the sequels, I would say escape from the planet of the apes which I believe was the last in the series I might be wrong. I think that’s the most interesting of them, though even that is not as interesting as the first film, I would like to humbly suggest that instead of continuing with the original series That you watch Charlton Heston‘s other two classic sci-fi films from this period . The Omega man and Soilent Green, both of which are excellent films in their own way.

Scott Macaulay

Great watching this with people that didn't know the twist at the end. If it felt like the Twilight Zone, that's because Rod Serling was co-writer on this. Good scifi makes you think, like Star Trek. So glad you enjoyed it. The sequels were a mixed bag and each one had a lower budget than the last, but I think the one with Ricardo Mantalban is a valuable one for the origin story of the apes. 'Escape From The Planet of the Apes' I believe it's called. You don't need to see the others to get it. They get kind of surreal.

Jorge De La Torriente

Hi Cassie. If you'll watch the next two sequential movies, 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes", and "Escape from the Planet of the Apes", I think it will make the later ape movies more comprehensible.

Chris Thom
>>163881215

Sounds like a lot of kids at the time were hyped about it. Did the adults like it too?

Chris Thom
>>163876597

I was three or four when that came out Rose and my sister loved it and it's literally one of my first memories of life. lol

Chris Thom

>>163881704

Me too- It’s a heartwarming classic. The feels are endless watching Lassie overcoming all odds for love. As a kid this was one of my favs and always had me in tears.

Thoko
>>163895927

But how many Star Trek or Mission Impossible movies has she reacted to?

2-Can
>>163917416

Heston was the only actor they could find who had the gravitas to be Schwarzenegger’s superior in the agency - a great call

Thoko
>>163943122

Chris I think they might have seen the poster before they watched the movie, but I don't think it really registered in their minds as an important detail. Early in the reaction they said they thought it was Earth, but then after that point, they just accepted the idea that it was another planet. They seem to have clearly forgotten about the statue until the end

Stick Figure Studios
>>163939358

You are correct, sir. A great score too (I was just highlighting another one of his "space" movies). Goldsmith also did THE MUMMY, TOTAL RECALL, AIR FORCE ONE, POLTERGEIST and THE SECRET OF NIMH.

>>163943122

Even as a wee lad watching this movie with my friends, we all said...they're back on earth, LOL.

*1968 original + 4 newest movies The 1968 original you reacted to is the best movie of the franchise, but I think you and Carly would also like the 4 newest movies and would make for good reactions. You can ignore the review numbers below if you want. IMDb 8.0, Metacritic 79%, RT 86% (audience 88%) = 1968 original IMDb 7.6, Metacritic 68%, RT 82% (audience 77%) = Rise (2011) IMDb 7.6, Metacritic 79%, RT 91% (audience 88%) = Dawn (2014) IMDb 7.4, Metacritic 82%, RT 94% (audience 84%) = War (2017) IMDb 6.9, Metacritic 66%, RT 80% (audience 78%) = Kingdom (2024) *2001 Remake The Tim Burton 2001 remake (w/Wahlberg) gets a lot of hate. Positive aspects are excellent makeup effects and a good performance by Tim Roth. Overall, the movie not that compelling, but you might like it. React to it if you want. A more modern movie than the 1970s sequels. IMDb 5.7, Metacritic 50%, RT 43% (audience 27%) = 2001 remake

*1970s sequels As a kid/young adult 40-50 years ago, I would watch the early 1970s sequels on TV on a Saturday afternoon or late night during the week. The 4 early 1970s sequels (more for hardcore fans) are simply not at the quality of the 1968 original, which is especially noticeable to me now. If you accept that, you could react to them if you want [but could skip the 4th Battle (1973), which is the worst movie in the franchise]. 1. IMDb 6.0, RT 37% = Beneath (1970) 2. IMDb 6.3, RT 76% = Escape (1971) 3. IMDb 6.1, RT 52% = Conquest (1972) 4. IMDb 5.4, RT 36% = Battle (1973) The first half of the 1st Beneath (1970) is essentially partly a rehash of the 1968 original, and the lead actor is just not as striking as Heston. The 2nd Escape (1971) is the best. But you have to get into the sequels’ stories, or the reaction may be akin to the Highlander (1986) reaction, for example.

James Melton

Glad you decided to watch this. It's a very different kind of film than the later ones. And I'll say a much better film in that it's much more ambitious. None of the old series you are skipping is really worth watching. It was pretty much "cash in on the ape costumes" sorry to say. The Wahlberg one is awful in part because Wahlberg is a terrible actor (yes I said that) but also because it was again just a "cash in on ape costume nostalgia" film.

Escape is the only one seriously worth watching. They were tragically bad cash grabs to be honest.

3dbadboy1

When Taylor mentions Dr. Hasslein's theory of time and a ship traveling close to the speed of light, he's referring to a doctor who will be very prominent in the third movie so pay attention when his name is mentioned.

He has a very small role in Escape and a slightly larger role in Conquest. I don't know why people are bad mouthing these. Maybe not as good as the first if you are paying full-ticket price in the movie theater. For a movie reaction channel, they are fine.

TheSingulatarian

I still have my Planet of the Apes Action figures. I should send them to Cassie where I am sure they will receive a good home. I'm always amazed that George Lucas was able to talk Fox into giving him the mechanizing rights for Star Wars. They made bank on the Planet of the Apes. Comic books, poster, board games, action figures. A small fortune. They clearly did not have much faith in Star Wars.

As you approach the speed of light you mass increases toward infinity. It would take an infinite amount of fuel to reach the speed of light.

If she spreads them out it will be fine. She stated that she can only get Carly once a week anyway.

@TheSingulatarian: You mean to tell me that this movie has things in it that can't actually happen? I'm shocked. Shocked I say!

Jenny_M

Cassie, I'd love to see you do a mini-reaction to all the Planet of the Apes pop culture bits -- specifically the Simpsons spoof! This movie traumatized me as a kid. My dad loves it, and for some reason thought it would be a cool thing to tell his 6-year-old daughter to watch on her own when it played on cable TV one night. Dodge's eyes in the museum haunted me for years. Reliving it now, it's not as scary as I remember, but wowza, the number it did on me when I was little!

Larry Dennis

Hi Cassie! I first wanted to say how happy I was to see you had gotten around to viewing one of the greatest sci-fi film of all time. And, I sincerely hope you watch all of the OG Planet of the Apes movies. And I also wanted to say that not all the essays were written about what went on in front of the cameras. One very fascinating observation was made behind the scenes. People noticed that during shooting, the meals when the various actors were having to eat their meals in costume, a very fascinating thing happened; the actors who portrayed apes, ate with the other apes. And the actors who portrayed humans ate with the other humans; even though this "segregation" wasn't planned on by the director or the movie studio. I just thought you might find this interesting. Take care. Larry Dennis

Cassie, please watch the sequels of the original 1968 movie. I know some people tell you they aren't as good, but that's the case with almost every sequel to every movie that ever had a sequel. That doesn't mean they are not enjoyable or worth watching. If it's a matter of time constraint, then I recommend skipping 2 (Beneath) and 5 (Battle). Do watch 3 (Escape) and 4 (Conquest). Escape continues to follow Cornelius and Zira's storyline with a fun twist that leads directly into Conquest. Conquest features Star Trek's Khan actor, (Ricardo Montalban), and answers some questions while filling in backstory.

I totally agree, Cassie, you must see the rest of the old series. yes the 2nd one "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" is not great, some really hate it, I like them all. but I feel most love the 3rd one. But you have to see the 2nd to understand the 3rd. I agree watching all the old Ape movies, makes you follow along with the new one better and you see all the references to the old ones also. I love all the Apes movies except the Tim Burton one, known as Mark Wahlberg one. Not good.

John A

I had the pleasure of meeting Linda Harrison who played the beautiful Nova in the movie. It was cool meeting her, took photo with her and she signed my Novo photo. very awesome.

Russell Teo

Still haunts me, this classic movie is

You had me questioning myself with that Mike so I had to look it up to be sure. And I was right, Heston was in only 1 of the OG sequels (Beneath) and he only briefly appeared in it.

Shawn Kildal
>>163878037

Actually Carly also saw Heston in TRUE LIES. He was Arnold's grumpy CIA boss wearing the eye patch

Jacob Gregg

Dont skip the other three. if you going on a plant of the apes journey . you have to go all in lol

Walter

I can't say I approve of someone covering The Planet of the Apes series while skipping 4 films (you can totally skip the Tim Burton one). But at the same time, of the original 5, #1 is the best. I think you will really enjoy the modern version - a really great story with great performances. They are cgi/motion capture apes and they are incredible.

Rose
>>163876597

@chris haha!! I saw it on reruns and the story behind “Top That!” is hilarious. Even Noah Blake & Mandy Ingber were mortified doing that scene but the movie & song became a pop culture phenomenon.

Brian Wood

Thank you Cassie and Carley. I hope you will continue the original series, because I grew up on these films, if not I understand. Thanks again.

Brian's Dog

Super Panavision movies looked so good, like this and Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur. Need this in 4k.

I agree, I still think the Burton remake was a pretty decent stab at it, and wouldn't mind if it was watched

Clay F
>>163887760

There is a patron (I think Philip G) who likes the Burton remake and really wants Cassie to react to it.

V M
>>163917416

Yes SFS. It could be a good watch for her. Joe mentioned completing the Heston trifecta but he may have left a movie out.

Yes, its thanks to my archnemesis, the laws of physics.

Scott Macaulay

Not wrong. I love all the movies but it seemed like she is trying not to watch them all so I was thinking of the most relevant ones to canon.

Mark White
>>163920844

V, you are right you cannot go faster than light. But as a avid Sci-if movie fan. I know for a fact, you can get around that by bending space! So much so, you will end up in hell and gouge out your own eye balls!! 😱😂

Mark White
>>163920844

Thanks Gregory, I probably should of looked that up first! But, I knew it was something to do with atomic clocks! 😆

Rick Williams

Great Movie. I discovered these movies on TV back in the 80's when I was a kid. They made a big impression on me and fired my imagination. They got me into Sci-Fi. I even watched some of the TV series they made. Great reaction ladies. I have not seen the modern movies. I look forward to watching them with you. You may want to watch some more of the original ones. I didn't like all of them as much as the first. But they were still interesting. A couple of them tells the story of what happened to man and how the apes rose to power. I think they were called, Escape from the Planet of Apes and Conquest of the Planet of Apes. I believe they were the 3rd & 4th movies. These two and the 1st one was the best of the series. I would recommend at least also watching these other two that gives the origin story.

Chris Retzlaff

It's crazy that someone said to to Skip the next 4....thats where the whole meaning of the franchise and the allegory of the geopolitical era that these were made in. Plus youll miss, KAAHHNN. Beneath, Escape, Conquest, and Battle are still good. Conquest is perfect especially in Black History month. Hilariously, to skip that one, not a great look. With that said, I wouldn't, but definitely understand skipping Wahlbergs

Gray

First time watch for me and I enjoyed it, obviously i knew the end scene and the simpsons parodies. I'd be up for continuing with sequels

Clay F
>>164061955

Agree that Escape (1971) and Conquest (1972) are the best of the 4 early 70s sequels. Beneath (1970) -- Maybe *Escape (1971) -- Best *Conquest (1972) -- 2nd Best Battle (1973) -- Skip

jreagan56

Thanks for "Planet of the Apes". First saw it as a 12-year-old ..and still am amazed at how well it holds up"

Stephen Dias

It's crazy to me that this movie was rated G back in the day, with the guns and cutting people's brains open. This movie used to freak me out when I was little. I was probably in my early teens when I finally sat down and watched it to discover that it's more suspenseful and cerebral than violent. BTW, Cassie has also seen Roddy McDowall, who played Dr. Cornelius, in the movie "Overboard."

Richard Maurer
>>163880534

Psycho is another movie with an ending that gets spoiled a lot. The TV series Happy Days spoiled it for me when I was a teenager. Fortunately I managed to avoid spoilers for PotA back then .

Richard Maurer
>>163920844

Since we’re talking science, I always assumed that as the humans devolved the existing apes species evolved past them. Apes evolving from humans was just what the apes thought happened, not what actually happened. Since the 3 apes species in the movie already existed on earth, it wouldn’t make much sense for them to have evolved again. Besides that’s not how evolution works - humans didn’t evolve from chimpanzees, both species evolved from a common ancestor. And 3 different species of ape all evolving from humans makes zero sense

Richard Maurer

This is my favorite kind of Cassie (and Carly) reaction. When they go into something completely foreign to them. This was a great reaction and I wish they’d do more movies like this.

She will see him again, in a 1985 movie, coming this October.

Chris Thom

It's a different kind of sci-fi, but considering how she liked Star Trek she may be up for more similar.

Chris Thom
>>164061955

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is worth seeing I think. A worthy prequel/remake/requel or whatever the hell it is. Not sure but I think it's the first to really show onscreen what happened to the humans and how the apes ascended.

Bill Maurer

I am another WPIX TV watcher growing up in the 70's and early 80's. We had a TV channel out of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton that would show movies at 4PM every Mon-Fri.

Dan M
>>163876892

WPIX was the go to station before cable for great movies.

Keith Jacobsen

Just me talkin', I wouldn't bother with the Tim Burton one either. I think you and Carly are gonna love the Andy Serkis ones SOOOO much. At least the first 3, I did not see the 4th one, I just...had a feeling. PS The crash landing sequence WAS filmed at Lake Powell, good eye!

Michael Walsh

Cassie, I'd at least watch Escape from the Planet of the Apes from the original series of movies. It follows Zira and Cornelius, on their adventure. I saw this film when it came out as an 8 yr old in 1968. Before it came out, I had bought all the baseball type cards weekly that promoted the movie. It was a huge event and didn't disappoint. It's one of the greatest sci-fi films.

Sam Whitewater

I usually am fine catching the YT edits but i LOVE the original Apes movies and had to watch the full reaction. I agree with everyone else, don't skip this series. Skip Burton's, THEN watch the new franchise. These movies are absolutely groundbreaking and smart sci-fi. Loved the reaction to it, too. It's magic getting to see someone watch these for the first time!

Clay F

If I was to recommend one of the early 1970s movies, it would be Escape (1971).

Astraeos

I'm gonna be one of the small voices here, and recommend the Tim Burton version. It has some great positives, such as the set design. I absolutely love Burton's version of the Ape city, and their society. And Helena Bonham Carter gives a good performance, somewhat salvaging as much as possible from what is definitely not that great about it.

Astraeos
>>164191789

Two words for y'all: Soylent Green. That movie needs to be watched last week.

Bro how are you gonna link a Simpsons clip and it NOT be Phil Hartman singing about Dr. Zaius?
