This was like being dropped into a teenagers memory/dream and it gave me a weird mix of nostalgia and anxiety. I like ‘slice of life’ movies and coming of age! It was weird that there wasn’t necessarily a plot or action, just one night in a 70’s high schoolers life where everything in the moment feels so big. Alright Alright Alright!

[Full Reactions] Dazed and Confused (1993)

Comments

Wes

Alright Cassie 🙌

Johnny Salinas

If you can find a copy of it I think you guys would like "French Kiss" with Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan 😊

Zane From Canada

"Ducks on the pond." "How you doin', boys?" 😁

Matt

Richard Linklater also directed a movie called "Everybody Wants Some!!" 2016 which is similar to Dazed and Confused but set in the 1980s 😊✌

Rose

If you like coming of age stories, then definitely checkout “The Man on the Moon” (1991) in Reese Witherspoon’s debut film. Directed by Robert Mulligan who also directed the classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962). Also highly suggested on PiB is Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Outsiders” (1983). Also a couple personal favorites of mine are “Billy Elliot” (2000) and “Girlfight” (2000) - Jamie Bell & Michelle Rodriguez’s breakout roles respectively.

Björn Karlsson

....and when will you do the BEST coming-of-age film ever??? 🥰🥰

Stick Figure Studios

If you liked this slice of life, coming-of-age story that takes place all in one night, you should definitely see AMERICAN GRAFFITI. It's the movie that George Lucas wrote and directed right before he did the first STAR WARS.

Thomas Thompson

I forgot how much I hate teenagers and now I hate teachers too.

Jason Henderson

Cassie, if you liked🥴, you’ll really love Dallas buyers club! A top 3 movie 🍿 of Mathew’s 😊

N M

Never saw this movie, but FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is the best high school movie representing what 1980s high school was like. Put this movie on your list.

TheSingulatarian
>>164861114

Freaks and Geeks the TV series captured it much better, in my opinion. In the early 80s we were in a recession, and you could not find a job. No mall in my town at the time.

N M
>>164861114

You must have lived way out in the boonies for there not to be any malls nearby in the 1980s. They were everywhere, including where I lived. FAST TIMES resonates with many Gen X’ers for this reason.

Shehab Dawoud

Never really got this movie. I think you have to be American to truly appreciate it, because it really is an American movie. But above all, it's a very white guy movie, I feel. Hope no one takes offence to that, but it's just one of those that can be difficult to relate to. A lot of great films don't really have a plot, more than people may realize: Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Forrest Gump, Before Sunrise (same director), just to mention a few. You can get by it in many ways. The soundtrack is great, though!

MAV293 (MARK)

I love this movie so much!!!! It definitely hits different for those that lived during this time period!!!! It is so authentic and spot on to the time it represents it is almost scary!!!! It is like taking a time machine back to a much different and fun time!!!! This was every small town high school at the time and everybody that lived through it had these characters in their lives one way or another!!!! The cloths, hair styles, cars, and don't get me started on that amazingly incredible soundtrack!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course there are others movies that capture those moments in time and probably the most famous was "American Graffiti" but "Dazed & Confused" is special in a lot of ways that for me make it a little bit better!!!!!

Eddie Perkins

Alright, Alright, Alright, we have a movie with music from my generation. I think I will watch it right now.

N M
>>164861114

I never got around to see PUMP UP The VOLUME, but I see it was made in 1990, so not really an 80s film. FAST TIMES was released in the early 80s, so right in the sweet spot for a high school coming of age film.

Jacob Colson
>>164861988

Thank you!!!! I've never liked this movie. It's too.....hateful. It's too mean. I'd rather watch Half Baked or Up in Smoke for a stoner movie.

Chris Retzlaff

This is a timeless classic, American Graffiti was for that generation, then Dazed and Confused, then Fast Times at Ridgemont High for the 80s, but ai think the 90s had the most representation from Mallrats to Boyz in the hood and Varisity Blues to American Pie. But kind of like Back to the Future movies no matter the times the same stuff happens to each generation. Whether you were on High School in 1960s or 2000....we all had these experiences and had issues you dealt with.

Choof

I think this movie has a timeless quality beyond the year it was made or the year it's set in. I'd imagine that for pretty much anyone there's at least a couple things that are from your own life in it. For me it's the feeling of senior year where everyone had settled into their cliques to the point everyone got chill and you could float between different friend groups

Johnny Bullis

OMG.. Im so glad you watched this.. one of my all time favorites. This movie was the launching pad for so many great up and coming actors. I actually met Jason London "Randal Pink Floyd" a couple of years ago at a convention I go to and he was pretty awesome. He actually has a twin brother Jeremy who is also in a lot of good movies.. like Mallrats.. which also starred Joey Lauren Adams, "Simone" from this movie. Kinda a neat coincidence. Im glad you liked it and yes this is definitely a no brainer movie .. no plot .. just nostalgia. And one heck of a soundtrack.

nick bell

You may have noticed a young Cole Hauser ( Rip from Yellowstone ) as Pinks friend Bennie.

Clay F

I like this movie. Thanks for the reaction. Matthew McConaughey's first big movie. My son saw the director Richard Linklater in an Austin grocery store last year and said no one seemed to recognize him. I forgot that was Parkey Posey in "You've Got Mail" you mentioned -- she did good in that. You noted that Adam Goldberg was in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (which I have not seen). He was also "Fish" in Saving Private Ryan -- the guy who got killed (stabbed) because Upham wouldn't go up the stairs to save him. Linklater did a good job capturing the 70's in that setting (in Austin) in Texas (and could be in other states or Canada, etc.). I was a high school freshman in Texas in 1977 (one year after the time in this movie). The awesome soundtrack is the music we listened to. You seemed to recognize "School's Out" (1972) by Alice Cooper and maybe "Slow Ride" (1975) by Foghat. In high school, I spent much time in those places shooting pool, and playing foosball (no spinning) and pinball. Oh yeah, and loved Aerosmith -- bought their "Rocks" (1976) album when I was a freshman in 1977.

Ian A

This was exactly my teenage years, but in the mid to late 90s. Hazing was done by upcoming seniors to the freshman, for us, it was getting the freshman with a bucket of water after school. It was a different student everyday for like the last 2-3 months. Every freshman knew to have a spare pair of clothes in your locker at all times. Then afterwards you would all go to the same parties all summer. Each clique in this is so true. There was always that one creepy old guy at the party that made everyone feel weird, but he brought beer or weed. Thanks for this reaction!

Chris Thom

Richard Linklater is a solid American filmmaker. Some of his best are Boyhood, The Before Sunset trilogy, School of Rock, Bernie, Slacker, and Where are you Going Bernadette. Boyhood won him some Oscars I think. Everybody Wants Some! is good too and similar to this one in a lot of ways, but about a college baseball team in the summer going into fall. Wandering, vibey, slice of life, and vaguely homoerotic. Your boy Glenn Powell is in it.

Chris Thom
>>164858627

Ahh Lil Baby Reese. Absolutely should happen on the channel (this channel specifically) if for some reason she hasn't seen it yet. I would think she has...but maybe she was a tad young for it and missed it entirely.

Chris Thom
>>164861114

Really thought that would've been on the channel by now. Definitely a classic.

MAV293 (MARK)

Cassie, My first comment was before I watched your reaction and it was interesting to say the least!! So much has changed since that time but there is no doubt, we are failing as a society. Of course in every time period since the beginning of human existence, there are things that have been problematic that had to be addressed. With that said, we have advanced in technology but human inaction and interpersonal skills we are suffering to the point that in the near future those skills and abilities might be nonexistent. We could spend hours talking about that but simply like I mentioned in my first comment, it was a much simpler time back then and I would have rather raise my daughter back then (she was born in 93') instead of the World in which we currently live. I loved this movie because it was just a Day in the Life and it was such a great life!! People have evolved into this over sensitive society where everything is a problem and everything is to blame with no accountability for our own actions. Rewatching this movie reminds of what was and what could be again..........and that is not a bad place to be!!!!

John A

Frist time watching this one, it does remind me of American Graffiti, but in the 70's

Rose
>>164858627

I also wanted to add “Heathers” (1989). I’m such a big fan of Shannen Doherty (esp. for her iconic role as Brenda Walsh in 90210) but I think Cassie may have seen it already before the channel..could be wrong tho.

Larry Darrell
>>164858191

Everybody Wants Some (2016) has Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch. Might be a good selling point ;-)

Jeff

This was my era, I was the same age as these guys in 1976, and I loved it! So incredibly realistic, not just because of the hair, the clothes, the music, etc., but even the notion that jocks and stoners and geeks and cool kids all hung out together equally. There was no "caste system" in those days, which (I think) might be specific to that era. The only thing I found totally unrealistic, even preposterous because it would never happen, was that whole hazing ritual between seniors and freshman. That is, until I spoke to some friends my age from Texas and New Mexico who told me that part was completely realistic to them. So I guess that aspect was regional. American Graffiti is terrific too, may get special points even because it was the first of its kind, the mother of the whole genre, but I wouldn't call it slice of life. All the main characters had specific arcs that drove them to the end. Still, terrific movie!

Chris Thom
>>164878062

Yeah there were always a few who took the hazing too seriously. It was their chance and they took it. At my school some guys flung urine on freshmen going to lunch and they got in trouble for it.

Anthony Padua

My mother remember "hazing week" at school in Idaho in the 60's... a lot of similar activities, but not the paddling

Brian's Dog

Watched this with you for the first time. The soundtrack is incredible. I miss the times before internet and cell phones.

Larry Darrell

“You know if it ain’t that piece of paper, it’s some other choice they’re gonna try and make for you. You gotta do what YOU wants to do, man. Let me tell you this… the older you do get, the more rules they’re gonna try to get you to follow. You just got to keep livin’ man.” No matter what era you grew up in, this film takes you back to that time in high school when you’re almost graduated and you’re looking to your future. You have all these plans and ideas about who you’re going to be. Who you want to be. It reminds you of the freedom you had before adult life and the weight of responsibility derailed many of those ideas. This is a time we should all remember and revisit regularly. You should never let yourself get so old, that you forget your younger self. Maybe some of those plans and ideas that got lost along the way… will find their way back to you, and you’ll realize they fit into your life much better, so many years later. This film reminds me that I’m supposed to be enjoying my life. That I’m supposed to be… L-I-V-I-N — How could you stop the Pictured End Credits early?!?!? Even with Foghat’s “Slow Ride” playing?!?! I was wanting to ask if this film’s soundtrack made ANY impression on you, Cassie. But now I’m afraid to. :-) After I saw this film for the first time, as maybe a 10 year old… I had to go to the record store and by this soundtrack. There were two different CDs. The Dazed and Confused soundtrack and the Even more Dazed and Confused soundtrack. One was green and the other pink. So many songs in this movie, they wouldn’t fit on one CD. I listened to these albums over and over. “Was this song for this movie, or was it already a thing?” 🤦‍♂️;-) Lastly… Did you notice Renee Zellweger holding the Beer Bong for Parker Posey?

Jason Pratt

I love this movie, but the amount of times Mitch touched his nose outside the Emporium pulls me out every time.

zynjams

I was 15 in may 1976, a freshman, and I played football. so when the seniors caught me it was nothing, and seniors knew it too.

zynjams

the soundtrack was incredible

TheSingulatarian
>>164861114

Nope lived in an edge city of Hartford, CT no mall until the early 1990s a least on this side of the river. I was out of high school by 1983 and then the economy had started to recover a bit. We had a big retail shopping center but no mall.

christopher b swanson

aside from a stellar cast and soundtrack........my favorite of this is how it kills every high school movie trope....... no one gets laid, no one finds true love, no one decides the fate of their life in a night, or has life-altering exp and last.............this is a group of juniors heading into summer before senior year...........its never them, but seniors in most movies........this feels so real to me.........'L I V I N'

Andrew Rose

Adam Goldberg was not only in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days he was also in Saving Private Ryan

Clarence Newman
>>164881371

Damn, Larry. While watching it the other day, I pointed out that the girl in the back of the truck *looked* like Rene Zellweger, but didn't for one minute think it was her. That's one of my guilty pleasures when watching older movies. Celeb-spotting from before they were famous.

Clarence Newman
>>164857233

Celeste. That's like telling Bill that DeShaun Watson is going to sign for his team when it's Patrick Mahomes he really wants. 😄

Clarence Newman

One extra celebrity spot I don't think has been mentioned....The guy who picks a fight with Adam Goldberg in the park is Nicky Katt, who played one of the bullies who picked on Chandler and Ross over who gets the couch in an episode of Friends. Nicky, as the bully, takes Chandler's baseball cap. Chandler: "What just happened?" Nicky: "I just took your hat."

Night King01

American Grafitti would be a good watch as well. George Lucas directed it. Another slice of life hangout film.

Clarence Newman
>>164880522

Agreed. The only downside being that if we wanted to watch movies with Cassie back in '93, we'd all have to have piled into her house.

Mojo One Thousand
>>164896319

He also is the scared prison van swat officer passenger in "The Dark Knight" and one of the guys in "A time to kill" commits the brutal crime that starts the movie, also with Matthew McConaughey. Although I would have seen the latter beforehand, I most remember him for a late 90s TV show called "Boston Public". I was going mention him, but you've done t so no need to double up.

Mojo One Thousand
>>164889496

He's "Melish" in "Saving Private Ryan", probably one of the more tragic deaths in the movie. He was also in "Friends" as "Chandler's" creepy room-mate when "Joey" moves out for a bit. Interestingly, the his red-headed friend in this "Cynthia" is played my Marissa Ribisi, the sister of his "Saving Private Ryan" co-star Giovanni Ribisi (another tragic death scene), and she also was in "Friends" as one of "Rachel's" entitled friends from the life she was leaving behind.

Mojo One Thousand
>>164881371

Cassie did say in the reaction she wanted to watch the credits, but the steaming service was wanting to move on, one of the many current issues with the inconsistencies of how we consume media now.

Mojo One Thousand
>>164870103

I thought Cassie was a watcher of "Yellowstone" so I thought that is where her familiarity with him would have been from. He is also one of "Will Hunting's" crew in "Good Will Hunting" with Ben Affleck his "Dazed and Confused" alum.

Mojo One Thousand

Solid soundtrack, and I would say that most of them would have been in at least of the iterations of the "Guitar Hero" franchise, so I am with you there Cassie. So many familiar faces in this, so it was funny to see Cassie know she knows them but not from where... that's where the comments come in, and a bunch of them have been mentioned. I was more interested in the collaborations that some of them had after this movie, there's probably more but these are the one I noticed pretty quickly. * Matthew McConaughey and Nicky Katt ("Clint" - the guys that gets punched and then retaliates) were in "A Time to Kill" together. Not sure they had any scenes together, but the are in it together. * Ben Affleck and Cole Hauser ("Benny" with the pick-up and loudspeaker) are in "Good Will Hunting" together in "will's" crew. * Ben Affleck is also in "Mallrats" with Joy Lauren Adams ("Simone"), which also has Jason London's ("Randy") identical twin brother Jeremy in it. * Not so much a collaboration but I found it interesting, Adam Goldberg ("Mike" - the nerdy guy that picks the fight) was in "Saving Private Ryan" with Marissa Ribisi's ("Cynthia" - the red-head) brother, Giovanni ("Wade" - the medic). Adam and Marissa were also in some episodes of "Friends", but not together. I don't think anyone has mentioned that Cassie would know Milla Jovovich ("Michelle" - played guitar and sang at one point) as "Leeloo" from "The Fifth Element"... Cassie thought she was familiar. I would have thought maybe "Zoolander" as well, but from what I could see in the requests app, "Zoolander" is unseen and "Zoolander 2" has been seen... I think this should be remedied if that is true that "Zoolander" is unseen.

Andrew Hussey

This film had been a yearly occurrence fir me since it came out, almost every summer at some point someone puts it on lol. Before my time, I was 13 when this came out so, literally becoming a freshman in 94. One of the actors said there's some movies that just don't hit at the box office because you can't bring your bong into the theater and this was one lol. Great flick

Eric Breighner

Can you do please do full length reactions without it getting blurred you can just host the video on another website other than YouTube like MagicMagy does because I'm not going to lie it's super inconvenient to do a side by side especially if we don't already own the movie to have to purchase it. Something i hope you consider! Thank you! Love your reactions! Cinderella Man was my fav!

Larry Darrell
>>164889496

Adam Goldberg was also seen in Zodiac (2007). The unfriendly guy who replaced Paul Avery.

Larry Darrell
>>164896319

Also to note… Nicky Katt’s bully buddy in the Friends’ episode was played by Peter Deluise, who is the son of Dom Deluise, who was in… The Cannonball Run (1981)

Clarence Newman
>>164896319

Do you realise, that's the second time Cannonball Run has been mentioned in the comments section today, and neither one of them was by me? Cassie. How can you continue to hold back such an avalanche of love for this great film? You're just hurting your fans at this point.

Larry Darrell
>>164901334

Rory Cochrane (Slater) starred in Hart’s War (2002) with Cole Hauser. As well as appearing in 5 episodes of Yellowstone with Cole too.

Larry Darrell

Anyone watch CSI: Miami? Rory Cochrane (“Check you later!” Stoner Slater) starred in the first 2 seasons.

Larry Darrell
>>164901334

And… Rory Cochrane was in White Boy Rick (2018) with McConaughey, Argo (2012) with Affleck, and Public Enemies (2009) with Giovanni Ribisi, the brother of Marissa.

Milton William Burray
>>164908231

Some reactors do that I know, but there's always the possibility that one day everything gets shut down and you lose your back catalogue, also you could potentially get hit with a lawsuit if the rights holders feel strongly enough. At the end of the day PiB doesn't have the legal right to broadcast movies Personally even when other reactors display the movie on screen I still play my own copy, which I actually find more inconvenient because then I also need to precisely sync up their movie audio with my video picture

Milton William Burray
>>164861114

@ NM, Pump up the Volume may have been released in 1990, but was conceived and largely produced at the end of the 80s. The opening monologue has the line ''Everything decent's been done. All the great themes have been used up. Turned into theme parks. So I don't really find it exactly cheerful to be living in the middle of a totally, like, exhausted decade where there's nothing to look forward to and no one to look up to'' The reason I cite PutV is it captures the teen angst and desire for something more authentic that really propelled GenX out of the 80s and into the 90s

N M
>>164880522

You can always turn off your internet and cell phone 😏

Mike Lemon
>>164908231

Are you willing to pay the $250,000 fine and up to five years in federal prison *for each instance* of her playing the movie? That is the penalty if some prosecutor gets a bug up their backside and decides to go after blatant copyright violation, or if a studio decides to push it- and it would be an open and shut case.

kaiielle
>>164908231

Hi Eric, the sync-your-own-copy method is the only legal way that Cassie is able to offer the full-length reactions to us. As this is how they earn a living, they're not going to engage in behaviour that could result in this Patreon page being shut down entirely. It's against Patreon's Terms of Service to distribute copyrighted content that you do not have the rights to distribute and studios can (and will) file manual claims against Patreon pages. Thanks for your understanding.

Eric Breighner
>>164908231

You do realize most streamers do it this way right? And you really think that if copyright holders wanted to go after somebody that they don't consider the condensed version as egregious as the full length version? Also please name a single instance of a reaction channel getting shut down? Name. A. Single. One.

Eric Breighner
>>164908231

So MagicMagy and other streamers that offer full length unedited/unblurred reactions don't earn a living with their channels? Plus if you use a hosting service that's not in the states, then you're fine.

kaiielle
>>164908231

Eric, those reactors who do it are taking a large risk. Cassie and many other reactors don't wish to take that risk. Simple as that.

Mike Lemon
>>164908231

"Also please name a single instance of a reaction channel getting shut down?" VKunia (edit- her YouTube page) "they don't consider the condensed version as egregious as the full length version?" The condensed versions are in a legal gray area that nobody really wants to deal with conclusively. "Plus if you use a hosting service that's not in the states, then you're fine. " No.

kaiielle
>>164908231

As for "most" reactors offering the full movies and TV shows in their full-lengths, that is just not true. I am a reactor myself, I'm part of a Discord server of other reactors, and I also follow LOTS of reactors here on Patreon (over 40 channels) and the sync method is definitely the most used. We all do it for the same reasons: we are able to follow Fair Use guidelines with the edited versions, but it's much harder to try and justify sharing the ENTIRE movie/show as "Fair Use". We deal with enough copyright BS on YouTube, we do not want to risk having the full-lengths taken away on Patreon too, especially since Paramount has definitely knocked on some people's Patreon pages already (this happened last year).

Clarence Newman
>>164859056

"Page not found" on that link, Bjorn. This does not constitute a vote of confidence for your movie.

You have to watch Everybody Wants Some. Same director. takes place 4 yrs later in 1980 in College. I think its your guy Glen Powell's first movie

Just Plain Bob
>>164908231

There’s also the possibility of imprisonment - five years for a first offense, ten years for further offenses. Plus, why do it? It literally takes me five to ten seconds to sync up my copy to Cassie’s reaction. Not to mention, it’s just plain wrong to steal someone else’s intellectual property.

Canadianant

I really liked this one in the 90s when it came out and I still enjoy it today. It does remind people of those high school and just post high school years were you perhaps didn't have as much responsibilities. The cast is really a who's who of that era in their earliest role. Fun to spot them all now. This is my favorite McConaughey role. He played a great dirt bag. Tons of great quotes in this movie. A great soundtrack and a real Slice of Life of the era. Interesting how early Affleck often played the jerk/ bully in both this and in Mallrats.Speaking of Affleck I know Cassie has seen it but would love to see a sisters reaction to Good Will Hunting . Fantastic performances in that one by both Matt and Robin Williams. Back to dazed and confused, The wild thing is that this movie came out in 1993 and was about 1976. Only 17 years apart and while it felt familiar in some ways, the culture, styles and music seemed much different . If this movie was made today it would be about some high schoolers in 2008!!! Wow makes me feel old! The teens would be talking about new music artists Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Adele ,Katy Perry all becoming famous in that year , maybe heading out to the movies to see the dark knight or Juno. Where does the time go,?
