Yay was wondering if this would pop up today. Couldn't find the movie streaming anywhere for 'free' so glad to see the edit.

Jason Henderson

Looking forward to seeing this reaction! A perfect ending to a great day!😊 Thank you Cassie!! Thank you Carley !!

Stranger2Reality

OK, gotta ask what people think of that final shot of the movie. The music is triumphant, our heroine got everything she wanted, and then it's this slow pan out to reveal that she's just one small cog in a huge machine, almost like she's just another drone or something. I have never been able to figure out if this shot is like an anti-corporate shot from an artist, undermining the whole journey of the woman he's just depicted this entire movie? Or was it just plainly earnest by someone riding the wave of 80s America and it's meant to be seen as purely uplifting and triumphant? I would probably lean to the latter of these options except that the director, Mike Nichols, also directed The Graduate, which has a similarly perplexing (or at least much discussed) famous final shot. He did it in The Graduate, where that last shot leaves you asking "wait, is this actually a happy ending? Or is it something else?" So I've always wondered if he did it again in Working Girl, but I feel like that question hasn't been asked about Working Girl nearly as much.

Bill Isaacs

Murders and Executions. Very '80s business model. I hadn't seen this movie in many years, thanks for doing to reaction. Melanie at this time was with Don Johnson, I believe. Heavy smoker. I just quit a month ago myself, and people tell me my voice sounds better.

JULIE

Um I think the lottery movie was Bridget Fonda.

Jason Henderson

Just finished working girl! What a great watch!! Melanie Griffith was simply amazing! She perfectly captured her character’s innocence and perseverance! One of the best Reactions yet!! 👏🍿

TheSingulatarian

Mike Nichols directed this. He was in a comedy team with Elaine May called Nichols and May in the 1960s. Both would go on to be successful movie directors in the late 60s and beyond.

Molly Campbell

Awww, I'm so glad you finally saw this one. I've always loved this movie. I knew you'd love it, too!

TheSingulatarian

The actress that played Bitzi at the wedding would show up over thirty years later in a recurring role as Don Geiss's daughter on the television series 30 Rock.

I always took it as she's found her place in the club now. But yeah there's always a touch of cynicism with Mike Nichols. He rides that line in a lot of his movies. Closer was downright depressive in some ways.

Chris Thom

I need to quit but I think it would be so freaking hard. Plus I love nicotine. It hits me just right.

Chris Thom
>>165199605

Was Nichols born here? I think he was German but not sure. I know he spoke the language, at least.

Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson apparently married and divorced twice, once in 1976 (married and divorced), and then remarried each other in 1989, the year after this came out, and then divorced again in 1996. According to Wikipedia, Melanie Griffith went to rehab after making this movie, and then reconnected with Don Johnson when she got out, and then the two got pregnant with Dakota Johnson, and got married a couple months before she was born. Melanie Griffith had a crazy upbringing, as you can see a little bit in one of the most insane movies ever made, 1981's Roar, which starred her mother and step father who also directed the movie. While filming that movie Griffith had her head and face mauled by a full grown lion. That movie must be seen to be believed, as supposedly dozens or even hundreds of people working on the film were badly injured by all the wild animals that were used, including Griffith's mother, Tipi Hedren, who had her ankle fractured after being thrown by a bull African elephant.

Mike Nichols was a notable director in the 80s and 90s. Some of his more well-known works are: The Birdcage - (Robin Williams & Gene Hackman) Charlie Wilson's War - (Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts) Silkwood - (Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell) The Graduate - (Dustin Hoffman) Primary Colors - (John Travolta) Biloxi Blues - (Matthew Broderick) Regarding Henry - (Harrison Ford)

I got lucky, that nasty flu bug kept me unable to smoke for about a week, and by that time the hard part was behind me. Otherwise I'd have never been able to quit.

Bill Isaacs
>>165198675

My only point was quitting smoking. I don't invest that much of my life in the ins and outs of celebrity lives. Kind of a dead end, really.

Clay F
>>165204395

Also "Closer" (2004) (Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Jude Law). I liked The Birdcage, Primary Colors, and Silkwood. I think Cassie would like Charlie Wilson's War (2007) (based on true story). Charlie Wilson was my US representative. Philip Seymour Hoffman nominated for Oscar.

Mark T
>>165204395

I haven't seen Closer but I would watch it if Cassie reacted to it. I agree, I think she would like Charlie Wilson's War, it's a really good movie. Also, The Birdcage was funny, Robin Williams was always funny.

Clarence Newman

Fun film. I would usually let the 80s fashion slide, but oh my goodness.....on what planet was Joan Cusack's hairstyle ever socially acceptable?

Stranger2Reality

Great reaction, Cassie & Carly! This is probably Melanie Griffith's best movie, although I also think Something Wild is right there with it (kinda different vibe though). If you liked her in this and are looking for other rom-coms that she was the star in, I'm quite fond of the remake she did of Born Yesterday with Don Johnson and John Goodman, and she was also good in Milk Money with Ed Harris. Those were probably her other two biggest rom-coms, even though they were nowhere near what Working Girl was. She was in a few great thrillers as well, Body Double and Pacific Heights. Something Wild is almost a combination between a romantic drama and a thriller.

Clarence Newman
>>165214577

Pacific Heights is a strange one, but in a good way. It was the first Michael Keaton movie I saw after Batman and Beetlejuice and I found the vastly different character quite.....compelling. Cassie could watch that one and then Clean and Sober as a cleanser.

Clarence Newman
>>165199000

Guys. There's an easy way to quit smoking. You just need to do that thing Ben Stiller does in Dodgeball to keep from eating doughnuts.

Jeff

I love how Cassie and, especially, Carly know exactly what is going to happen in the movie and still absolutely love it. Rom-Coms are their comfort food for the soul.

Jeff

Funny too how Cassie initial thinks that Melanie Griffith is the actress in It Could Happen to You (Bridget Fonda). Two multi-generational acting families, the Fondas (Henry, Peter and Jane, Bridget) and Tippi Hedrin, Melanie Griffith/Don Johnson, Dakota Johnson - it's harder to follow when it is the women acting as their names change with marriage.

David Collins

Started watching the YT edit last night and realized, I don't think I've ever seen this. Now I gotta find me a stream and watch the whole thing. :D

Mark White

This is such a Cassie/Carly movie. My mum loves this movie. It’s not really my thing and I wouldn’t watch this on my own, but I do enjoy watching rom-coms like this with you two. Good easy fun watching.

Jeff

Mike Nichols was born in Germany to Russian (father) / German (mother), both Jewish. He was sent to America, where his father already was, in the late 1930s to escape Nazi Germany. His mother went first to Italy (which in retrospect wasn't a great choice) before going to America a year or two later.

Doc Larry

The reason Ms Sigourney Weaver was carrying a gorilla. It was a nod to her movie Gorillas in the Mist about American zoologist Dr Dian Fossey she won the Golden Globe for. PS good movie to put on your list for potential reaction movie

James Melton

Warhol style print of you two would be amazing! You *need* it.

Chris Thom
>>165272614

That would be cool for her wall. There's probably a program now that can do that with photos.

Chris Thom
>>165211664

The makeup was downright clownish too. Love Joan but that was way over the top. She did remind me of Blade Runner though. Which is kind of cool.

Chris Thom
>>165204395

Closer one of my favorites from the Aughts. Hope she gets to it eventually.

Clarence Newman
>>165211664

I didn't want to pile on, Chris. But yes. It looked like Joan had put her makeup on in the bathroom during the crash scene of Airplane.

Gro Do
>>165247478

OMG i just remembered that from years ago. The ashtray scene really stuck with me as a young kid who loves apes

Hollis Hamilton

Here's five RomComs that Cassie and Carly should see. Based on her Letterbox list, she hasn't seen any of them. Moonstruck - Cher & Nic Cage Murphy's Romance - Sally Field & James Garner Something Wild - Melanie Griffith & Jeff Daniels French Kiss - Meg Ryan & Kevin Kline Addicted to Love - Meg Ryan & Mathew Broderick.

Stranger2Reality
>>165214577

Something Wild is a fantastic movie, from director Jonathan Demme a few years before he made Silence of the Lambs. It's got Melanie Griffith, Jeff Daniels and Ray Liotta in what was really his first major film role. The story between Griffith and Daniels is really fantastic and then Liotta shows up in the second half and basically steals the movie with how good he is. I would absolutely hesitate to call it a rom-com though, so if anyone hasn't seen it and is looking for that, it's a fair bit darker than that. There is romance, there is comedy, and there's drama, but it is not all lighthearted fun, not at all. Great movie though, and well worth seeing.

Stranger2Reality
>>165289854

I've never seen Murphy's Romance, but considering how good the other recommendations you made are, I probably should check it out. I agree with the other four movies in that I think Cassie would really like them.

Thomas Thompson

Heeeeeeey! An officer and gentleman is my favorite romance

Chris Thom
>>165289854

Trying to remember if there's been any Sally Field on the channel yet. I think Cassie would like her.

Chris Thom
>>165214577

Oh yay I'm going to look that up. Demme is one of my favorite directors. Rachel Getting Married might be an interesting one for the channel.

Guy

One of those random facts that gets stuck in one’s head: In 1990, Working Girl was adapted into a short-lived TV series starring Sandra Bullock. Her third acting credit according to IMDB.

Clay F
>>165272614

I saw actual Warhol prints (1967) of Marilyn Monroe in The Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

Chris Thom
>>165318891

That was kind of the era of short-lived shows based on movies. Friday Night Lights was one of the few that actually worked and lasted.

Chris Thom
>>165318891

Oh that's right. Takes me back. I remember when kids were talking about that show and I was like 'oh yeah with the cheerleader and Deputy Dewey from Scream'. Just got a lot of blank looks and 'HUH?' I didn't know it was a show and they never knew it was a movie. To be fair the movie was pretty meh. But the concept was good.

Chris Thom
>>165272614

That's cool. Just the other day saw an interview with that Andy guy from the Real Housewives shows and he was saying the first time he was in NYC the first celebrities he saw were Andy Warhol and Ric Ocasek walking around downtown. Lol. That would be a trip.

Richard Maurer

I can’t lie, I went into this reaction thinking this was the movie where Melonie Griffith played a prostitute hired to take care of the lead actors kids. The title , Working Girl, kind of fits though, right?

Richard Maurer
>>165318891

Buffy the series has the distinction of being better and more popular than Buffy the movie though.

Clay F
>>165272614

I was a big Cars fan circa 1980. Still ocassionally have their songs on my general playlist.

Clay F
>>165356081

That's Milk Money (1994). Good point about the title Working Girl.

Hollis Hamilton
>>165289854

I've been trying to get Cassie and other reactors to watch Places in the Heart, which was Sally's second Oscar win. Very family oriented and seems to be something she would like. It also has a young John Malkovich, who Cassie thought she saw in Gladiator.

Clarence Newman
>>165247478

Gorillas in the Mist is a really good film, but also one I have no intention of watching again. Tough watch for an animal lover.

Jacob Wagner

Something Wild would be great for the show..it starts like a situational comedy by switches gears into a thriller...Ray Liota is fantastic in it

Stranger2Reality
>>165417254

Pretty crazy how that was really Ray Liotta's first movie role. He is absolutely great in that movie. Such a good movie because it's really good for the first half, and then it takes a turn and becomes something far different but still stays at a very high level.

Chris Thom
>>165356081

I think I thought the same because I didn't know this existed until like 2007. Title does sound like a Pretty Woman situation.

YodatheHobbit

Suggestion for a Mother's Day 90s action thriller movie reaction: The River Wild starting Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon.

Matthew Tarpley

Like I was saying last night, I think you would like Regarding Henry. Harrison Ford is one of my favorite actors, as a matter of fact, I even picked him as my favorite actor in our high school senior profiles in my last high school yearbook (it didn't hurt that Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade had been out when I wrote it!).
