Fun movie! Thanks for all you do and have a great weekend! 🛩👨‍✈️🎥🧝‍♀️🍿👏🫶

Doc Larry/old geezer

It is so silly the copyright situation with YouTube reactors because you only increase interest in old movies and new movies. Movie Studios should be sponsoring you. Even Tom Cruise enjoyed your channel.

Robert Jewell

Cate did a fantastic job portraying my cousin Kate.

2-Can

I’ll take the chaos. If the rules were too detailed, every reactor would probably have to show the same cut. Likewise, the reactor’s video’s themselves would be fair game for others to re-package on their own channels (as we’ve heard of happening to PIB). Since I don’t see a simple solution, I would rather see this work out over time. But I agree that these channels increase interest in a lot of old movies, the newer and more popular movies probably don’t need an assist.

2-Can

Ps - (and this just might be the over-caffeinated coffee talking) maybe Cassie should reach out to Scorsese/Spielberg for a movie pick - although I haven’t considered any possible downsides to that - they may not want reactors getting too close. Could maybe just consult YouTube videos where they name their favorite movies.

Happy Hanukkah

Is this like Air (2023), with channel favorite Tom Cruise in the Michael Jordan role? :-P

Clay F

Agree that Cate Blanchett did excellent portraying Katharine Hepburn. A highlight of the movie.

Happy Hanukkah

There is absolutely nothing that Blanchett can't! :-)

Ian A

"You guys look great tonight!" Me in my pajamas pants and an old stained tshirt while waiting for laundry to finish and eating nachos. "Um...Thanks." 😆

Uncle Phoenix

@2 Can Pro Chaos. “The Obstacle IS The Way”.

Robert Jewell

Dear Cassie, you should also now DEFINITELY WATCH - MELVIN AND HOWARD (1980) also based on a true story regarding Hughes. It won I think 3 Oscars and was directed by Jonathan Femme.

Jim Sarbinoff

One thing about the Hughes legacy that gets missed sometimes is that he created the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It might have been a tax avoidance scheme at the time but has become one of if not the leading medical research charities in the world. They have multiple noble laureates in their catalog and today donate hundreds of millions of dollars to medical research every year.

Robert Jewell

Al Pacino Scarface is a pseudo remake of the 1932 film Scarface.

Chris Thom

Great reaction. Thank you for doing this one. Perfect vid to leave us on before vacation. Lots to chew on.

Chris Thom

I just choose to believe her. Lol. It's nice.

Chris Thom

Was wondering about that. Haven't seen HH's version. Was it about running alcohol?

Chris Thom

I've definitely rented quite a few movies just because of this channel.

TheSingulatarian

Always good to see a story about another Nutmegger. Katherine Hepburn's father was a Dr. at Hartford Hospital. She and the family spent a lot of time on the coast in Old Saybrook. She barely escaped with her life in the 1938 hurricane. It came upon New England as a bit of a surprise. No weather satellites in 1938. She said she escaped out the back window of the house before the storm swept the house away. Today there is a performing arts space in Old Saybrook in her honor. https://www.thekate.org/

I know Cassie will hate me for this, but I don't get the love for DeCaprio--never have. Compared to actors like Johnny Depp or Val Kilmer, he just strikes me as average. I've never seen DeCaprio do any movie where I wasn't painfully clear it was Leonardo DeCaprio trying to act. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Robert Jewell

Chris, it's quite good and directed by Howard Hawks and produced by Hughes about a gangster very similar to Al Capone and a pre-code film so it's more violent and slinky than later Hollywood films.

Trevor Rotan

Hughes was a POS, and a fascist psycho.

Tinker

The singers in the club scenes as they go through time are all from the same family. You have Rufus Wainwright Martha Wainwright and Loudon Wainwright.

Mike Lemon

"and a fascist ..." The real definition or the modern delusional one? Also, do you have a source? I don't see anything even hinting at fascism. All I see is some racism.

Chris Thom

I don't know a lot about him, but I could imagine there could be a major dark side to his OCD--needing things to be so orderly and to his precise liking. "Nothings clean, Howard, but we do out best."

Chris Thom

I do always see Leo DeCaprio the movie star in his parts, but I always accept what he's trying to portray. I tend to enjoy whatever he's doing onscreen. The Beach might make for a good reaction here.

Chris Thom

The youngest one looks really familiar.

Jeff Rogers

Speaking of Katherine Hepburn... On Golden Pond.. you'd love it.

Jeff Rogers

Check out the YouTube video with them called House of Rufus, the song is Poses. Loved it for years.

Tinker

Seen him in concert 6x and Poses always hits me in the feels. Im a huge fan of all them all, and Lucy too.

Michael McErlain

Wow. Lots of criticism for Leo and the Hughes story. Having had a lifetime career in aviation, I choose to honor and respect the research and advancements he brought to aviation. It seems like some of the greatest advancements in technology always involve controversial figures.

Art of Free Speech

Yeah, and I think that's the difference. I don't buy him in his roles. He doesn't maintain the suspension of disbelief for me. I'm not saying he's awful, just not in the class of, like, Michael Douglas, Kilmer, Depp, Anthony Hopkins, et. al. where I just get lost in their acting (Hopkins' performance as Lecter was so good I think, if I ever met him, I'd be worried he'd want to eat my liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti) , and am not dragged out of the movie with their performances. I do get dragged out of the movie by DeCaprio.

Clay F

A Leonardo DiCaprio film I suggest is REVOLUTIONARY ROAD: “Revolutionary Road” (2008) (romantic drama). Setting: mid-1950s suburban America. Based on 1961 novel. Powerful movie. Nom 3 Oscars. Kate Winslet won Golden Globe for Best Actress. Golden Globe nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor (DiCaprio), Best Director. Directed by Sam Mendes who also directed 1917 (2019), American Beauty (1999), Skyfall (2012), Road to Perdition (2002).

Chris Thom

Good one. Good score by Thomas Newman.

Clay F

A Cate Blanchett movie I suggest is ELIZABETH: "Elizabeth" (1998). Nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actress (Cate Blanchett). Cate Blanchett is stunning. Oscar Best Picture nominees that year: --"Elizabeth" (1998). --"The Thin Red Line" (1998) (awesome WWII movie). --"Shakespeare in Love" (1998) (won). Like this movie + your reaction. --"Saving Private Ryan" (1998). My Best Picture that year. Profound. --"Life is Beautiful" (1998).

Jim K

You really should watch a couple more Katherine Hepburn movies. If you haven’t. Should watch “Guess who’s coming to dinner” several great performances in that.

Bill Maurer

DiCaprio should have won an Oscar for his performance as Howard Hughes

James M

Important to understand a definition of a word is nothing more than someone writing down what people meant who used the word. The idea that there is a real definition which constrains the real meaning of a word is a misunderstanding. As to the meaning of fascist, the study of political science does use it as a technical term. However the public has long used it to mean anyone with power who abuses it to retain power and to limit the power and freedom of others. That's consistent with common usage today. I guess if you are a real stickler for words, take a look at what "modern" means and consider when you might instead use "contemporary".

James M

I'm surprised at this take on his acting. The roles he plays in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Titanic", "Don't Look Up", and "Killers of the Flower Moon" couldn't be more different. I guess you mean he attempts all these very different roles and continually fails? I'm sure you realize very few people would agree.

Chris Thom

Fascinated with her. Did you get to spend any time with her growing up?

Robert Jewell

No, I was 2 generations younger, but we kept in touch by mai starting in the late '80 and later on with her brother particularly when she became ill. I visited her Connecticut house twice a few years before she passed. I swear she was as active as I was. Really energetic.

James M

Hughes suffered from serious mental health issues which today we would call OCD. This is not the casual use of the term that someone might use to explain why they like to keep their shoes neatly aligned. This is the medical term, where the person experiences a degraded quality of life as a result of their compulsions. The film makes this a big part of his character. He can't pass a towel to a man in the bathroom because he is afraid of contamination from touching it. He can't finish his meal when someone (rudely) touches his plate. Eventually he can't leave a single room for months at a time. This disability is considered the tragedy of Hughes life story by many people.

James M

My personal favorite scene in this film is Hughes telling the wealthy family that they don't think about money because they have always had it. It's a frustrating situation to be in and I can't help but fantasize about being able to deliver such a confident retort.

James M

BTW the Lockheed C-130 Hercules is an entirely different aircraft than the Hughes H-4 Hercules. The widespread use and reliability information you read relates to the C-130. A single H-4 flew just once for less than a minute and barely above the water level. It did fly but could not be considered a real success.

Art of Free Speech

@James If you mean am I aware a lot of people like him as an actor, then yes. I know a few people who agree with me, though, so I don't think that number is quite as small as you're trying to represent. I certainly didn't say he approaches all roles the same way. I simply don't think he does all that great a job in doing it. Again, he drags me out of the film and makes me painfully aware he's acting.

Chris Thom

I get the sense that a lot of people don't believe OCD is a real disorder. I wonder myself sometimes because I had a lot of those symptoms as a kid, but they went away when I intellectualized and realized my little routines weren't actually helping me or anyone else. They were just hurting. I did the light switch thing and handwashing and other things like it's portrayed here and in As Good as it Gets. It did go away when I changed my thinking and outlook. Anxiety symptoms are very real though. It's probably an extension of that. And maybe being too controlling.

Chris Thom

Oh neat she was from Connecticut. Always kind of assumed she was from there. Think she may have been who they used to say used a 'mid-Atlantic accent'.

Mike Lemon

@James- Okay... there is so much wrong with that, let's go through it. >take a look at what "modern" means and consider when you might instead use "contemporary". Modern- adj. - pertaining to the present time, or time not long past - Webster's, 1880 -characteristic of present and recent time; contemporary; - dictionary.com >The idea that there is a real definition which constrains the real meaning of a word is a misunderstanding. “When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’ ’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’ ’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.” - Through the Looking Glass >Important to understand a definition of a word is nothing more than someone writing down what people meant who used the word. In the case of fascist, the guy who "invented" it- https://www.gutenberg.org/files/14058/14058-h/14058-h.htm#THE_DOCTRINE_OF_FASCISM -and his quotes- https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Benito_Mussolini >However the public has long used it to mean anyone with power who abuses it to retain power and to limit the power and freedom of others. In other words- wrong, or how I put it, "the modern delusional one".

James M

I'm glad you were able to improve your life with your mental focus. Some people can do that and some cannot. Hughes did not have the benefit of contemporary psychology to help him understand his problem and work on strategies for improving his life. However he did have the means to indulge his compulsions far more than the average person, which likely contributed to the severity.

Chris Thom

Yes, true. And he was surrounded by Yes Men.

Chris Thom

Some solid Scorsese films left to see on the channel: Casino, Hugo, Public Speaking, Kundun, The Wolf of Wallstreet. Hugo could be a fun one for the channel, considering its a story that is essentially about the love of film itself. Probably his most family-friendly movie. And highest budget.

Tim C

The Spruce Goose only flew once and now sits in a Museum Smithsonian I believe. It kinda says it all a Plane Larger then Life and his Life Story and Dreams. Plane is so huge it's ridiculous why it couldn't achieve what he intended. Worth checking out.

Chris Thom

It sat in that same bay for years. Then moved to Oregon. Not sure where it ended up. May still be in Oregon?

Tim C

Evergreen Aviation Space Museum McMinnville, Oregon. I Knew it was in a Museum somewhere, Google.

Happy Hanukkah

Mike, all I'm familiar with is his anti-Communist policy at RKO. Which makes him definitionally a fascist. /sarc

Happy Hanukkah

Art, it's funny you should mention Michal Douglas. For a good while, my opinion of him was that "he doesn't act so much as direct himself." Not that he did a bad job. And I acknowledge that I may have to update my evaluation.

Art of Free Speech

@Happy Hanukkah Douglas certainly wasn't great in every role (I thought he really kind of pushed the envelope of what he should be doing in Romancing the Stone--I just don't think his acting meshes well with the adventure hero, ya know?), and I certainly respect that other people may find him less capable than I do. I tend to look at actors and say "Have they ever done anything I think I couldn't do?" and if I have to say 'yes', then that strikes a chord with me. Wall Street and Basic Instinct are two movies where I just don't think I could pull off what Douglas did (Fatal Attraction and The Game come to mind as well). He just projects a sense of power I wouldn't know how to emulate. The Saint and Tombstone are those movies for Kilmer (there was a documentary on Kilmer where he explained his process of developing characters, and I could NOT EVER do what he did... he ran through like 30 different accents for a character for an audition tape, each a completely different take on a character--astonishing... simply astonishing), and with Depp it's like every other role he plays... I should mention, I didn't WANT to like Johnny Depp because he's so pretty, and all the girls swoon over him, but I can't deny he's spectacular... Thanks for commenting! I enjoy talking about acting chops, and who has 'em and who doesn't!

Old As Dirt Bert

Hugo would be Cassie's favorite among the list.

Chris Thom

Would hope she would like it. Very sweet movie. So, so different from most of his other films.
