Man of Stttteeeellll! I really liked this spin on his story and how they told his story! It was fun seeing familiar faces pop up and I know Carly has changed her stance from the intro by the end ;). Also, sorry for the outro audio, it sounds a bit muffled!

Glad you enjoyed it. I think it's great and if you decide to continue with "Snyderverse" you like them just as well

James UK

There was a mixed reaction to this one but I remember enjoying it. I think you just have to accept that Christopher Reeve was Superman/Clark Kent and no one else will match him. Once you’ve done that you can enjoy this for what it is.

Stick Figure Studios

Some of the early teaser trailers for this almost made it look like a Terrence Malick movie.

aarswft

Hard pass.

Stick Figure Studios

Pleased to hear you both enjoyed it, Cassie. I figured you would. I liked it too for the most part. Superman is my favorite comic book superhero and I'm always interested in a new movie and/or interpretation of him. I also generally enjoy Zack Snyder (300) as a director... though I am by no means a Snyderbro (he fashions very visually striking images, but his storytelling can be pretty clunky). This movie was the flagship film for the DCEU -- Warner Bros.' attempt to replicate Marvel's success with a shared cinematic universe -- and it is an epic, ambitious and worthy effort, but it was also a very divisive one with people on both ends of the spectrum loving it and hating it with equal passion. I fall somewhere in the middle myself. It has a lot of very fine qualities while at the same time some major flaws. What I respect about Snyder and co. is that they tried to forge their own path and not rely so heavily on the iconography of the Donner movies that have influenced every other live-action portrayal of Superman since (Hans Zimmer even came up with a catchy main theme that is almost as good as John Williams' memorable march... almost). In the end, though, I think it was just a little too dark and violent for a Superman movie. One of the things I love about the original 1978 film is that it takes the character and his mythology seriously, but it is still fun, humorous and light-hearted. MAN OF STEEL suffers I think from taking him too seriously. It also shows the risk I think of having too much action. The whole second half becomes kind of exhausting after a while (and all of the 9/11 imagery feels a little icky and exploitative). This was no doubt an overcorrection to the complaint that there wasn't enough action in SUPERNAN RETURNS. From one extreme to the other. The film is better cast than SUPERMAN RETURNS though. In particular, Henry Cavill looks great as Superman and possesses the necessary weight and dignity for the role (although I have a couple ssues with his suit), but his performance and the movie ultimately suffers I fear from its makers fundamentally misunderstanding the character. It's a shame Cavill never really got the chance to fulfill the potential that this movie promised, but he is nonetheless the Superman for a generation. I'd be curious to see you continue with the Snyderverse. You're in for a wide variety in quality if you so. Some films are good abd some are decidedly not. Either way, I do think you will enjoy the new James Gunn Superman movie. It is excellent and IMO superior to this one. Still, an't wait to watch this reaction. :-)

Rick Rodriguez

I never really cared for this movie, but I never hated it. Was just too much in terms of self seriousness and sensory overload. However, if this leads to the channel watching ZS's Justice League, which I was surprised to end up loving, I'm all for it.

Anthony Carlson

I didn’t mind the new one, but I will always prefer the original cinematic Superman, Christopher Reeves. That being said, I really liked Henry Cavill as Superman. But like you said, he didn’t reach that potential because of how they approached the character in this one.

Rick Rodriguez

That's 100 percent. Early comic con teaser even used the famous track from The Thin Red Line by Zimmer.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, nothing ultimately matches the original Chris Reeve movie. Nothing.

Bill Maurer

It is. Very large in scale and so much better than the garbage that was Whedon's version

Clarence Newman

If they ever remake Cannonball Run, I'd be ok with Cavill taking the Dom DeLuise role. He might need to eat a few more pies though.

aarswft

It is definitely a favorite among 10's of people. Almost the entire Snyder fandom.

Clarence Newman

Agreed. There are times when an actor nails a role so completely, nothing afterwards is ever quite good enough. Reeve as Superman is one of them.

aarswft

Well at least I was right. So distracted by Kevin Costner they missed the fact it's the worst version of Jonathan Kent we've had on screen.

Clarence Newman

This film disappointed me. Where's the iconic Superman sprint alongside the speeding train??? Cassie loved that in the 1978 version!

Johnny

One of the things I really loved about this movie, is that it showed how powerful and fast they were compared to humans.

Shehab Dawoud

Henry Cavill deserved a better script. So did Ben Affleck. But you liked it, that is something! If you're going to continue in this universe, you should watch certain versions of the next films: With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, watch the extended cut called the Ultimate Edition. It makes the story more coherent and functional. The same goes for Justice League, where you should watch the one called Zack Snyder's Justice League. After that, I'd personally like you to react to The Flash from 2023. Not because it's a good movie, but because of two appearances that I loved that were really nice send-offs for two great actors. I won't spoil who they are, but I hope you watch that too. Man, I'm begging for superhero movies to be watched, I don't recognize myself!

Philip Alan

All Kryptonians have powers on Earth! 👍🏼 And Superman never kills. That's the reason for his reaction after killing Zod. Oh, and at the very least, please watch the first Wonder Woman. And then if you're feeling frisky, watch Batman V Superman. Maybe? :) Fantastic reaction!

Jacob Lunbeck

I can’t overstate how shocking and controversial it was to see Superman kill someone on the big screen. I remember being in the theater and hearing people audibly gasp when it happened. Even though most agree that he had no other choice in the situation, there were a number of people who felt a Superman movie should never have put him in that situation in the first place. One’s reaction to that moment is arguably the main indicator of whether or not they like this version of Superman or not. Personally, I am a big fan of Cavill’s portrayal and am very sad we won’t be getting more.

WestBound

That's my Superman 🥺

Chris B.

Cassie: the show you were trying to think of that your dad watched was called, "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." It starred Dean Cain as Superman and Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane, with both actors absolutely killing it in their roles! And let me tell you something else...the chemistry that Dean and Teri had together in the show absolutely COOKED, every single man who watched it was insanely jealous of Dean Cain in that moment and I'm sure it was the same for the ladies with Teri.

Just Plain Bob

I feel bad for Henry Cavill. I think he could’ve been a great Superman. He’s a geek and unabashedly so; he understands comics, fantasy literature, gaming and geek fandom.  He embraced the character and the opportunity it represented.  But he was stuck playing the world’s greatest superhero (in DC at least) for a director that simply didn’t understand the character. In “Man of Steel”, he kills Zod.  Superman has a strict no-kill policy and (almost) always finds a way around killing, even in seemingly hopeless situations.  Exacerbating matters is the obvious question: If Superman was capable of snapping Zod’s neck, couldn’t he have simply forced his head to the left a few inches to prevent the death of the family Zod was targeting? How about blocking Zod’s heat vision with his free hand? And, if he was gonna kill him, wouldn’t it have been wiser to do so before they destroyed half of Metropolis? He also wreaks untold destruction on Metropolis.  In “Superman 2”, faced with the exact same circumstances and realizing the damage they’re causing and the threat to human life, Superman simply flies away to save the city.  He will fight another day and in another place rather than risk untold numbers of civilian casualties. In “Man of Steel”, he makes virtually no attempt to save the victims of the apocalypse being unleashed.  Again, in “Superman 2” we see him taking the time to save innocent civilians; so much so that Zod deems his affection for humans to be a weakness and deliberately targets them. Here, he saves a soldier and Lois; that’s it, everyone else is left to their fate. Zack Snyder himself confirmed that 5,000 people died as a result of the battle in Metropolis.  It would’ve probably been many, many times that amount (it seems likely that Snyder low balled the figure due to vocal fan backlash over the wanton destruction on display).  A scientist/disaster expert consulted by Buzzfeed, using computer models, calculated that actual deaths would have been closer to 250,000 with a million injured and $2 trillion in damages. All because Superman couldn’t be bothered to fly away and fight again another day (and in another place). In “Man of Steel”, he’s also revealed to be petty, spearing a man’s 18 wheeler (and livelihood) onto a telephone pole after the man humiliates him in the diner.  An 18 wheeler can cost as much as a house.  And he sacrifices his father to a tornado rather than make any attempt to save him - Supes in the comics would’ve saved ANYONE, particularly his own father, even if it compromised his secret identity. Zack Snyder simply didn’t understand the comics or what Superman was supposed to symbolize. They say it in the movie, noting that the symbol on his chest means “hope.”  But it’s kinda like an outlaw biker, responsible for beatings, rapes and murders, bearing tattoos on this chest that read “peace” and “love.” It’s utterly meaningless given that person’s actions. Of course, Superman’s somewhat cavalier attitude toward rampant destruction and loss of human life is well founded in his upbringing. After all, Pa Kent admonished him for saving a bus load of kids and suggested that “maybe” he should have let them die. That’s a far cry from Spiderman’s uncle telling him that “With great power comes great responsibility.” (Yes, I know Spiderman’s a Marvel character.) Pa Kent’s sage advice would seem to be more akin to, “With great power comes a great need for self preservation and ignoring the plight of those that need your help.”  On the upside, I suppose it speaks to Clark’s good character that he tries to help prevent the apocalypse unleashed by his fellow Kryptonians and their World Engine, even after a youth filled with Pa teaching him to look out for number one. PS: There’s also plot holes galore. For example, why embed the Codex in Kal-El’s cells?  This would seem to imply that he was supposed to rebirth the Kyptonian people. Yet, Jor-El tells Kal-El that he and Lara didn’t make the journey to Earth because they were products of their Kryptonian heritage.  Kal-El, on the other hand, could embody the best of both peoples.  He encouraged Kal-El to be a beacon for the people of Earth - nothing about leading new Kryptonians to a better life/way of life. So why preserve the Codex? The only real explanation is as a plot device. Which is fine, as long as you completely ignore character motivations. Another example: It takes Superman more than 30 years to figure out how to fly. Zod does it in a matter of hours. Presumably, Supes was developmentally challenged and would’ve taken the short rocket to school back on Krypton.

Rick Rodriguez

I'm not really a Snyder guy. I just thought it really achieved a great fantasy epic feel with earned emotional stakes.

Philip Alan

Ben Affleck wasn't in this one. :)

Stick Figure Studios

I like Cavill, but find his portrayal problematic. Incidentally, my wife and I vehemently disagree about that moment. She is far less bothered by it than I am.

Philip Alan

@Stick Z's JL made so much more sense to me. I really enjoyed it.

Charles Briggs

Good to see that y'all liked it now if y'all continue on please watch Batman V Superman Ultimate Edition and Zack Snyder's Justice League 👌👍

Shehab Dawoud

I know, I'm referring to the next one.

Choof

As others here have pointed out, next up is Batman v Superman, then it gets tricky. Technically the next movie after that with Henry Cavill is 2017's Justice League, but a whole bunch of drama went down on that film related to the edit, reshoots, effects etc. So in 2021 the original director of that movie Zack Snyder got to film some new footage and re-edit the movie to "Zack Snyder's Justice League". Then a whole bunch of flops on other DC movies as well as consistently average to bad reactions from critics and many fans caused them to abandon the universe that started with this and technically ended with The Flash in 2023. They brought over James Gunn who did the guardians of the galaxy movies, gave him total control and they started from scratch with the recent Superman movie. As for this movie directly, I get that they didn't want to just emulate the Christopher Reeve movies especially after 2006's Superman Returns tried that and failed, but i just think this movie is very boring visually, very grey and brown. I don't like the portrayal of Jonathan Kent and his "don't save people until you're older I guess?" thing which doesn't make much sense. I also think Amy Adams was miscast as Lois too. Henry Cavill is decent in the role but he doesn't get much to play. He has very few interactions with other characters to develop his own personality, doesn't really get to play Clark Kent reporter and doesn't even get to play "Superman". He gets his suit and almost immediately is in the battle for the rest of the movie so there's no time to establish him as an actual character rather than a CGI punching machine. I personally much prefer the new Superman movie that perfectly encapsulates the feel of the comics: colorful, silly, cosmic and actually let's characters have personalities before sending them off from plot point A to plot point B

Ike

Huge. Huge fan of Superman. Teri Hatcher is my favorite Lois Lane. Christopher Reeve will alway be the greatest Superman to me no matter who carries the torch. You ladies’ reaction is aligned with most audiences when this was released. Good, but... dot dot dot. I took my young nieces and nephews to see this one - it should be fun like Marvel movies right? They enjoyed it, but I think some of the themes were lost on them. I thought it was visually spectacular. My nephews both liked Zod and Faora more than Superman and I had to explain who Clark Kent was to the girls. My only issue personally was when young Clark asked Jonathon Kent (Kevin Costner)… “What was I supposed to do, let them die?” [the school bus] and Pa Kent responds, “I don’t know, MAYBE.” ???? Who in the heck wrote that scene? Anyway, Cavill is the best looking Superman I have ever seen. If it’s possible to be so impossibly good-looking that you matched the cartoon, I think you nailed it. If this character has a legacy, it’s this: My father took me to the Christopher Reeve’s Superman and I am seeing the new SUPERMAN this weekend with my nephew who is returning the favor. How about that?? 🥳

Erik Locquiao

I was wondering if they were gonna realize Henry Cavill was in The Count of Monte Cristo…guess not.

K, Zachary

So this is one of our favorites. We really can't decide between this one and the new one. They are both equally great movies. Very well done lovable characters. Both of us are big Amy Adams fans. So we can't wait to watch the reaction from the GOAT girls. This is one is going to have to wait for tonight. As soon as she gets home from work. Carly is back that makes this extra special. Speaking of superheroes With Caitlin out with that groin injury, we sold our tickets for the Sky game this weekend. We found another Sky game to go to. Caitlin is our Superhero, so is Paige Bueckers and of course Anne Frank. Real life superheroes. Anybody can look up to.

Shehab Dawoud

The old heads here may not like this version of Superman because they grew up with Reeve, and that's understandable. But like I've said before, I grew up with Superman from the Justice League and the Superman animated series, which were quite serious in tone. So this is closer to the version I know and love. But Cavill was let down big time by the awful writing. He should've been Superman for a decade or two if he wanted to. Watch this intro and tell me you don't get chills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXph0arElKs

SEAN ƴü KAY

Is it too wrong/early in 2025 to recommend 'Brightburn' to be a Halloween poll watch for these two?

Alex Gorell

I still think the flying and fighting scenes in this movie are the best of any Superman movie. That being said it’s a heavily flawed movie. Henry Cavill deserved better.

Clay F

I liked it. I liked Henry Cavil. I liked the nonlinear telling. I think linear telling would have felt more drawn out and with less texture. I liked Amy Adams (I always like her). While there was chemistry between Lois and Clark, I wish their romance could have been more pronounced. I liked Diane Lane’s portrayal of the American mom, and Costner’s portrayal of the American dad. I liked Russel Crowe. When I see Laurence Fishburne, I think of Akeelah and the Bee (which my kids loved) and Boyz N the Hood, and the skinny teen “Clean” in Apocalypse Now. I liked hearing Chris Cornell. I had zero interest in the bulk of the last 40 minutes of the movie – maybe I would have liked better in the theater. I liked the final couple of minutes. You said Zod (Michael Shannon) had a “good evil face.” Carly said “he is very evil.” Later in the movie, you said “I hate his face.” Don’t let that sour you on Michael Shannon. He also plays good guys. Michael Shannon is one of my favorite actors. An excellent character actor but also a good lead. My favorite movie in which he is a lead (a good guy) is “Take Shelter” (2011) (w/Jessica Chastain) (I would love to see you react to that). My favorite series with Michael Shannon is the awesome “Boardwalk Empire” (Steve Buscemi as lead). I am not big on superhero movies, so I am glad your Superman journey may be at an end, except for reacting to Superman (2025) which I am interested in that. I was 15 in 1978 when Superman (1978) was released and at the time had little or no interest. I have really never read comic books. The 4 Superman movies I have seen are below and ranked by how much I liked them: 1. Superman (1978). 7/10 2. Superman Returns. 6/10 3. Man of Steel. 6/10 4. Superman 2 (1980). 4/10

Gábor Árki

One other thing that really bothers me about this movie is the color grading. It's so dark, desaturated, and grim looking. It feels like a strange choice that doesn’t really fit the character IMO. Cavill wasn't lucky with his choices. The same kind of thing happened with The Witcher. From what I read, he took the role as a fan of the games and books, having a good understanding of the characters and the world. But the showrunners didn't, and wanted to do their own thing. This lead to constant clashes between Cavill and them. There was such a big feud that he was allowed to quit his contact.

JL_83

It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s Henry Cavill wearing an S 😉

Walter

I was typing out my own reply when I stopped and read this. You said it perfectly. I always say that Man Of Steel is a pretty good science fiction movie but a terrible Superman one. Like you said, Snyder just did not understand what makes Superman a great character.

Walter

Take Shelter is a great movie! I didn't know much of anything about it when I watched it and was really surprised. I do think Cavil is great, I just don't really like this take on Superman.

Walter

I guess I'm one of the "old head" you are referring to since I grew up on Christopher Reeve. He was a great Superman. I absolutely loved the animated Superman and Justice League and even the brief appearances of Superman on Batman Beyond. It's not the series tone that bothers me about this film so much as I just think they miss the mark on the character. Superman as brooding loner isn't appropriate to me. But to each their own. I think the new movie nails the character really well and really captures that live action comic book look and feel. Personally, I think it's the best live action version, but nothing compares to the animated one.

bgb1975 (Brian)

:( Oh Carly.... You've never seen Superman The Movie (1978)? Another broken heart. It's the only one really worth watching. And there will never be another.

SEAN ƴü KAY

Would like to pick your brain on a few things you said...one day in discord...if possible. Wish it was more active

Ike

Same name, just ping me. 🙂

TheSingulatarian

Cassie now you need to watch the other Zack Snyder DC movie, the one that got him the Superman job "Watchmen-Director's Cut" (2009). It was once considered unfilmable just like "Lord of the Rings". I would say he did a pretty good job. Some geeks were mad because he made the superheroes look cool, whereas in the books they were kind of schlubs and changed one major plot element, but it mostly works. At the time that it was written it was not part of the main DC continuity, but they have added the characters in to the main continuity recently where one of the characters fights Supermen. The other "Sydervese" movies "Wonder Woman", "Batman Vs Superman", "Aquaman" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League" I think it is a better movie than the Joss Weadon version.

Shehab Dawoud

I like the new one too, it has a good balance between the goofy and the serious, whereas the Reeve movies are just a bit too much on the corny side for me. Everyone agrees that the writing sabotaged Cavill, but he did what he could to present himself as well as possible. He will always be Superman, which can't be said for others who have played the role.

Benjamin Guzman

A lot of people hate this movie because it was way too dark and joyless for a Superman movie.

Larry Darrell

Been debating on whether or not to try and watch this again. I’ve only ever watched it in the theater once, but that experience almost pushed me to anger. ;-) Have been wondering for some time if I remembered things wrong. Thanks for reminding me, I didn’t. I may still try and watch this later, if I can find some calm time. One thing else that I remember, among all the other things you pointed out, that bugged me… how long after seeing Superman and Lois making out at ground zero of 9/11 times 10, did they cut to Clark and his Mom standing at his Dad’s grave, and his Mom saying, “He would be so proud of you.” ?? Would he?? Would he?? I remember it being almost the next shot. Was that right??

Michael G

You can’t “miss the mark on the character” when it is an adaptation of a character that has been adapted a few thousand times. Outside of the very first appearance, there is now core to who or what these characters are. Superman is boring sorry to say as a character. So little can be done to make him interesting. MoS was easily the most real world, an actual person and ‘human being” put on screen.

Dean Holt

Going to give this a watch later today, it took a little bit of time to grow on me. As when I saw it in the cinema I was a little 50/50. But after a few rewatches it’s actually now one of my favourite DCEU Films. If you’re planning on watching Batman v Superman, make sure it’s the extended cut because it makes a lot more sense and is a better overall version, because you won’t be scratching your head a few time thinking this doesn’t make any sense 😂.

Michael G

That Pa Kent scene is a great scene. It was about thinking before acting. About repercussions. About Pa Kent knowing Clark’s potential, and saying mindfulness and caution to Clark, that if he was found out at a young age, he knew people would come take him away probably experiment on him, maybe even kill his as a result, meaning he could not save and help people in the future. It was a great piece of writing by Nolan

Joe J

I love this take on Superman, just a very entertaining film. Cavill is excellent in the role. Also a fan of Batman vs. Superman (Extended cut) and Justice League (Synder cut), hope you watch those.

Dean Holt

I think Hollywood would go with the easy option of Jack Black or Kevin James. But I personally think Nick Frost would do a great job.

Michael G

He was a great Superman. There is no “understanding the character” the character has been adapted a few thousand different times in a few thousand different ways, so anyone talking about a “core” or “what the character is” is just projecting their ideal of them, or the character they grew up with onto to this new adaptation. Also it is not the director that brought the character forward, but the writers. This character is probably the closest to an amalgamation of all comic variations rolled into one, ever put on screen. Some Supermans have not killed some have. Probably the most highly regarded comic “All Star Superman” he kills. Again people need to stop projecting onto an adaptation. You miss the reason why he had to kill Zod entirely. Zod spells it out in clear language for you, so I am not sure how you missed it. Zod said he was never going to stop until they were all dead, he did not care about Clark. He had only one purpose at that point, the complete eradication of all humans. There is nothing other than killing Zod that Clark could do to prevent that. Clark did not want to kill, but there was no other choice when Zod in that moment as he was about to kill that family made it clear. Might want to go back and watch the movie. Metropolis has been destroyed countless other times. Just look at one of the most popular pieces of media about Superman, in SAS, JL, and JLU. Again you are projecting. Yes most are left to their fate, because of proper writing. Not everyone can be saved. He was a bit busy destroying that world engine. Again, you clearly did not watch the movie. Superman flying away would not have solved anything. Having him fly away was always weak writing in every other instance. You are a villain trying to destroy a city and eliminate a people and your biggest obstacle just flys away… coool whole city to destroy at will now. This was covered in the movie. It was not about Clark, it was about destruction. Media literacy appears to be lost on some. That truck was a consequence action. For the first time in screen Clark was not an emotionless blob, but a “human” oh no a truck was trashed as a lesion. His father sacrificed himself to keep Clark a secret, to protect his son. There is nothing other than “supes in the comic” there are a thousand different versions, stop projecting. Those are not plot holes, not even close. It is all spelled out in the movie you clearly did not watch. Codex was for a time in the future to bring the kryptonions back. He is carrying the entirety of his people with him at all times. Zod can fly right away because of decades of training and focus, and has a littéral example of what can be done in front of him. It amazes me how someone even when it is all spelled out for them, misses so much.

Michael G

People not wanting that situation, want to be coddled. Any movie where a situation of an extreme with an extreme character like Superman does not exist, want a poor written and poorly thought out character.

Michael G

Anyone who says “Superman never kills” has never read any of the comics. It has near always never been true

Michael G

It was the most honest and realistic version ever put to screen

Mike Gallagher

I saw a tweet about this film that cracks me up every time I watch this. "When Clarke is a kid playing with a cape, who is he pretending to be? Liberace? "

Clarence Newman

Yeah, Henry might suit the Burt Reynolds role better. I just don't want to see him wearing a pornstache.

Larry Darrell

That was too Corny for the “modern audience,” so they left all that out. But you know what? I like Corny. I’m looking for Corny in my life.

Joe J

Wait a minute. Superman killed Zod in Superman 2 also.

Clay F

Walter -- I was the same with Talk Shelter -- didn't know anything about it when I first watched it.

Doug Fisher

Walter, you think "Superman" (2025) is the best live action?! Really?! 2025 is horrible, as in I would rather re-watch "Superman IV" than this one again. Give it a month as I don't think it will hold up quite as well as you are espousing. It wasn't even a Superman movie it was a Justice Gang / Mr. Terrific movie. There is a reason it is going to flop at the box office.

Doug Fisher

Yeah... I think it was his first or second roll IIRC. I also think Cass missed that he was in "Stardust".

Doug Fisher

It really wasn't though. The whole "maybe" let them die or that whole tornado scene was dumb. "Superman: The Movie" handled the "you can't save everyone" perfectly. Jonathan going back to the car instead of Clark and then Clark letting him die... dumb.

Doug Fisher

Very well said... well, except for your last paragraph which I disagree with wholeheartedly as the characters in "Superman" (2025) were even less developed than in this one (2025 is a bad movie). The rest I agree with, well 95% at least, as I though Henry was a great casting for Superman, he was just not given much to work with. Welcome to Zack's world... a little boring while still being all flash but little substance. He is such an overrated Director.

Shad Kanyak

There hasn’t been an actor who played Superman that I didn’t like it the role. Plenty of Superman movies I didn’t like. This era of Superman was meh.

Scott Macaulay

NO matter how hard I try, I can't stay awake for the 3rd act of this movie! I think the sensory overload shuts me down. I like the first half of the movie though. Some neat ideas are explored. Can't get over the tornado scene. Overall it's an interesting but flawed take on Superman, but too much at times. Kind of like a birthday cake that is 90% frosting. Good for a couple of bites before you start retching lol

Ike

I agree with Doug. Richard Donner handled the “you can’t save everyone” scene perfectly in Superman (1978). The repercussions of saving a school bus full of kids is that a school bus full of kids are saved - come what may. And who exactly is going to take Clark away from his family if discovered? How? I agree with Michael G that the scene should have conveyed everything you’re saying… but like Doug says, the school bus full of kids wasn’t the avenue to direct that conversation. Should have been “Good Job, Clark. Do more of that when you get older, because there is NOTHING on this planet you should fear and we’ll always have your back for doing the right thing.” Right? Letting kids die for some greater purpose doesn’t fit any movie, much less Superman.

Joe J

I liked both Reeves and Cavill in the role. Different takes on the character, both equally valid in my book.

Doug Fisher

Michael, Dude... your copium is all over this comment section. We get it, you are a Zack fan and you love the movie. Superman has always been a beacon and a symbol for the best parts of humanity. It is very hard to be those things and kill. In fact, killing in that situation is a better representation of "poor writing" and a "poorly though out character".

Uncle Phoenix

Woohoo can’t wait to get back home to watch this.

Doug Fisher

No he didn't Joe. Zod, Ursa, and Non go into a pit in "Superman II", but at most you could say it was ambiguous. In outtakes they are arrested by the Arctic Patrol. Definitely not in the Donner Cut.

Doug Fisher

Michael, what you are skipping (on purpose I suspect) is that the times when superman has killed is due to influence, mind control, or mostly alternate universes/realities story lines. It is disingenuous at best.

Doug Fisher

Sorry Michael, but that would be Glen Ford's version with John Schneider in a close second.

Uncle Phoenix

And Thor is from the land “A-Money-Money-GUARD”

Uncle Phoenix

“EL” is a common term for small g “god”. Such as Dan-El, Mike-El, etc.

Popcorn In Bed

henry cavill isn’t in justice league? is he in superman vs batman?

Popcorn In Bed

well we were confused by a few things he did! Why would he go back for the instead of Clark?!

Doug Fisher

I was with you and am with you for the most part... save the casting. While I think Henry is a fantastic Superman, Second only to Christopher... I think Amy Adams was terrible miscast as Lois (also didn't have much chemistry with Henry) and I don't like/support race swapping characters, no matter how much I love Laurence Fishburne. Zack is overrated. "300" was so good because he basically just aped the graphic novel frame for frame.

Shehab Dawoud

He is in both Batman v Superman and Justice League. He's also in The Flash (kind of). But like I said, if you're going to do those, watch the editions that I and others have mentioned. They're a bit longer but it'll make the experience much better!

Larry Darrell

Clark could have ran out, grabbed his dad and they both could have climbed under a truck. Clark could hold his dad down with one hand and hold the truck with the other. Everyone would think it was a miracle they were both still alive, but no one would think he’s not human. Crazier things have happened.

Bill Maurer

agree ... all three movies tell an excellent story

Bill Maurer

" ... Clark did not want to kill, ." This !!!!

Bill Maurer

In the Comics, Superman killed Zod. He does not want to but had to. In the movie, Zod even said " There's only one way this ends, Kal. Either you die, or I do. " I know the destruction is a lot ( it was the similar in Star Trek Into Darkness, which was also released in the same year of Man of Steel - 2013). But you had two Supermen fight it out over the fate of the world. There was going to be destruction to show how powerful both of these figures are. "And he sacrifices his father to a tornado rather than make any attempt to save him ." --- His father MADE the sacrifice, not Clark. He believed the world and Clark was not ready for him to reveal himself to the world. I guess, in this movie, Clark would have been about 18 or so in this movie. " why embed the Codex in Kal-El’s cells? This would seem to imply that he was supposed to rebirth the Kyptonian people." --- Good point, let me expand. Zod needed Superman (who had the Codex) to fully repopulate his version of "Krypton on Earth". Zod needed the Codex and said so in the final confrontation that led to Jor-El's death. --- " Lara, listen to me! The Codex is Krypton's future! Abort the launch!" He also told this to "ghost Jor-El" ... "Tell me, you have Jor-El's memories; his conscience. Can you experience his pain? I will harvest the codex from your son's corpse, and I will rebuild Krypton atop his bones." "It takes Superman more than 30 years to figure out how to fly. Zod does it in a matter of hours. Presumably, Supes was developmentally challenged and would’ve taken the short rocket to school back on Krypton." ------ Clark grew up being human and was told, for most of his life to suppress or hide his real ability / powers, you even mention that above. It wasn't till he "met" his real father on the scout ship and told him who he really was and challenged him to keep pushing his limits. Then, after him donning the suit, did he really try to fly. Similar to Zod almost in the battle with Kal-El. He saw what Kal-El was capable of and forced himself to do the same ... " I was bred to be a warrior, Kal. Trained my entire life to master my senses. Where did you train? ON A FARM? " Quotes from the movie were taken from IMDB. I gotta ask .... did you really watch the movie ??? Or are you James Gunn incognito ?

Just Plain Bob

Zod made it explicitly clear to Jor-El that he was going to kill Kal-El; pretending that he didn’t care is nonsense. Also, the Codex is bonded to every cell in Superman’s body. Zod even asked if Superman needed to be alive for it to be extracted. Killing Superman was CLEARLY at the top of his agenda. As for killing Zod, they met and fought dozens of times in the comics and he only ever killed him once. Pointing to variants from other universes and limited run editions is disingenuous at best. The vast majority of the time he’s depicted as he was in the original Donner film(s). PS: Alternate universe variants and limited edition runs have given us a Spiderman and Batman that wantonly murder their opponents, a Superman that does likewise, a Batman that uses firearms and literally dozens (if not hundreds) of variations for all the major comic book characters that are WILDLY different than the original, most widely known depictions. If you wanna cherry pick a depiction, it’s certainly possible. But, I think most people go in expecting to see a character that behaves in a way that they recognize. Instead of “subverting” expectations, how about trying to exceed them? PPS: Clark had the power to save his father. Easily. He chose not to. That’s sacrificing him.

Choof

Also FYI Cassie, Superman 2025 comes to digital on August 26th

Above Average Dave

I actually think Henry Cavill is the best Superman. He also seems like the consummate gentleman, and in a perfect world, he'd be this generation's Cary Grant-type actor. Unfortunately, he or his agent has been picking scripts that are...not the best.

Michael West

The look both of you had when Costner showed up was priceless. I always have mixed emotions with this movie. I like the concept, I really like Cavill as Superman and thought Amy Adams did a good Lois Lane. I have a sentimental attachment to the original concept of Clark trying to hide his real persona from Lois and the world. Overall it is an entertaining movie. Glad you both enjoyed it.

Richard Maurer

While I don’t want her to watch every DCEU film (especially not WW 1984), I wouldn’t mind her watching the better ones.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, Adams is not a great Lois Lane... but she is better than Kate Bosworth who played her in SUPERMAN RETURNS and I said the casting and this was better than that movie because Cavill is better than Routh and Despite the race swapping, which sometimes bother me and sometimes doesn't, Lawrence Fishburne is a better Perry White than Frank Langella. In some circles Snyder is overrated, but another is I think he's a little underrated.

Richard Maurer

That one (Jonathan stopping Clark, Clark being stopped) is the main WTF moment for me in this movie. Made zero sense.

Thomas

I wanna put in my vote for Batman versus Superman, which is a little flawed as a film. It’s maybe a little too stuffed with setting up the DC universe. But I love Ben Affleck’s take on Batman that alone makes it a worthwhile movie for me

Richard Maurer

I was on the fence about watching the full reaction to this one. I’m more a fan than a hater, but it’s not high my favorite superhero film list. The fact that I’m a HBO Max subscriber made me go ahead and watch. Overall I like this film, there are a few bad scenes (the tornado scene, by far the worst) but generally it’s pretty good. One bad rap this film gets (all superhero films get, really) is about the amount of damage Superman causes while fighting. Every time I hear that argument I always think “ this person has never been in a fist fight, or has forgotten what’s it like”. I’ve been in a few and your thoughts consist entirely of hitting this guy and not being hit by this guy. And that was a regular street fight, not a fight to the death. Now scale that up to Superman’s level and all the destruction makes more sense.

Walter

It’s absolutely great if you like this interpretation of the character. And it’s absolutely okay if others do not. People (like myself) are thinking of the classic interpretation of the character, and this strays from that. And that’s okay. Everybody likes what they like. This didn’t work for me but it did for you. That’s cool.

Tyler Hale

If that happens, the Ultimate Cut is the way to go because that’s the one Zack intended to release but the studio shortened it and it caused story issues

Just Plain Bob

A peace offering to those that love the movie. There’s actually quite a lot I like about it. Henry Cavill is fantastic and Michael Shannon is a better Zod than even Terrence Stamp IMO. Amy Adams is my favorite version of Lois Lane so far (I haven’t seen the new one but the clips I’ve seen indicate the new Lois is pretty fantastic too). I love that we see her backtrack Clark to his home - you know, like a world class investigative reporter. I thought her chemistry with Cavill was great. I love the way the Krypton backstory was depicted. I love the fact that Kal-El was the first natural birth in hundreds of years, effectively meaning that he represented hope not only on his adopted planet but for his home world as well. There were many things about this depiction that I thought were fantastic. Just not the things I addressed in my original post.

Joe Mallard

Superman acting like Batman is pretty cool.

Justin Samlal

The best thing about the new Superman movie is that it's the absolute polar opposite of this one.

Kyle K

My favorite Superman 🙂

MikeLL

This was only like my third watch of the whole movie and I hadn't seen it in 5-7 years. It's OK, not bad, nothing to write home about. Actually I thought it was a little overdone this time, too much special effects, but watching with Cassie and Carly really emphasized the heartfelt moments. But the story needed a little streamlining, and I thought some of the action sequences, especially in the small town, went on too long. Also, there were too many flashbacks in the movie.

Richard Maurer

I kind of disagree about the action sequences being too long. That’s a big part of what superheroes are about, showing how powerful they are. If fact, if I have problem with modern superhero movies it’s that they downplay their abilities. While I don’t want these films to be all or even mostly fight scenes, this one was pretty close to where I think most SH films should be.

Bill Maurer

I do think Shannon was phenomenal as Zod. Much, much more menacing than Stamp. But, the original Superman movies were supposed to be more ... humorous or campy. Man of Steel was the direct opposite of campy. Which is good.

Stick Figure Studios

It does get pretty monotonous after a while in the second half. A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Stick Figure Studios

Donner handled just about everything better than Snyder did.

Stick Figure Studios

@Larry: I think Superman should be at least a little corny because society in general nowadays tends to find nobility, virtue and goodness corny (This was a major theme of the new movie). If Superman's not corny, that he's probably not really Superman. He's somebody else (like, say, Homelander) that people are admiring for the wrong reasons.

Stick Figure Studios

@Cassie: he went back because they needed to contrive a situation where he would nobly sacrifice himself to save his son's secret. I get what they were trying to do, but that scene is one of my least favorite in the movie. Give me Glenn Ford's sad but sublime heart attack from the original 1978 movie any day over this noisy spectacle.

Gray

First watch for me was pretty decent although a bit too long in parts but the casting choice with Russel Crowe in particular was really good. Dissapointed Cassie didn't repeat The Greater Good when General Zod said it but she was too locked in on the movie I guess :D.

Shehab Dawoud

Well, tbh, everyone here is old compared to me! I’m pretty sure I’m the youngest here

Larry Darrell

I’ve still only ever seen Man of Steel once, and honestly, I was dozing off in the theater. Sometimes it can be a sensory overload, and I just check out. I did the same with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I fell right asleep. I know there’s probably some things I missed, but everything I remember checks out with what others are saying. And I know for sure I saw Superman and Lois making out while 100s of thousands of people were dying right next to him. Shouldn’t he be able to hear the screams and last breaths of all the people buried in the MANY buildings that have fallen, just a hundred feet from where he’s smooching it up. And I’m pretty sure I remember Martha Kent, saying that his father would be proud of him, as they’re standing next to his grave. Is that what he died for? So that he would learn to not care about saving lives of others? (Checks notes…) Oh yeah, that is right. 🤦‍♂️ I think it was a lot more than just the special effects overload that caused me to check out.

Uncle Phoenix

Hey guys. Happy Utah Pioneer Days!!! Woohoo!

Larry Darrell

But Superman, to me, is supposed to be Greater than Man. I expect him to do, or at least attempt to do the things I can’t, or wouldn’t. And I believe that he can, because he’s a Super-Man. Superman is not a character that works being brought down to human standards, IMO.

Larry Darrell

I like the frosting on a cake analogy. So right. I also started dozing off in the third act, while in the theater. The same thing happened with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I passed right out, and woke back up when it got quiet.

Richard Maurer

If he were fighting someone not his psychical equal, sure. But fighting Zod or someone of similar abilities, he’s in the same boat as the rest of us. Superman’s not god or at least he shouldn’t be. Some comics have given him virtually limitless power and abilities, and all that achieved was boring stories. If both Superman and the reader (or viewer) know he can’t be beat who cares about the story, you know how it will end already.

Ren Maddox

So odd, because Adams is by far my favorite Lane. First portrayal that seems as world class an investigator as she's always made out to be.

Just Plain Bob

I disagree with you (somewhat) about this film, Richard (see diatribe below). But I definitely agree that Superman has a history of being overpowered to the point that the character was simply uninteresting. I remember one time when he blew out a star like it was a candle on a birthday cake. What can you do with that? How do you make that interesting?

Clarence Newman

That's the main reason I can't engage with Marvel/Superhero movies, Richard. Used to at one point (original Superman, Batman '89), but the Marvel films cured me of it. It's the lack of jeopardy when fighting, especially when the "Superhero" (like Batman or Iron Man) is basically just a human with a fancy suit. When Iron Man gets thrown against a wall hard enough to crack the wall, we're supposed to believe the suit will protect him. Meanwhile, in the real world, the effect on his internal organs would be the same as throwing tomatoes at the wall. Of course, I am no expert in this field and my opinion is less than worthy. My favourite movie fight scene of all time is Hugh Grant against Colin Firth in Bridget Jones 2.

Richard Maurer

Larry - if Superman heard all those people in trouble then he definitely knew Zod was was still alive and would be coming for him. But that’s one of the fundamental problems with Superman’s ability to hear when people are in trouble - it would eventually drive him insane. Because with billions of people in the world there would constantly be someone who needed his help. So his choices would be constantly, 24/7 helping people or taking time for himself, and try to deal with the guilt of letting people die who he could have helped.

Clay F

I liked the flashbacks. I thought done well. But the action sequences did go on too long. The last 40 minutes of the movie bored me.

Larry Darrell

If it winds up looking like a pornstache, they can easily just CGI it out. He’s got experience with that.

Clarence Newman

The tricky one would be replacing Jack Elam. Nobody has eyes like that except Bill Cosby.

Just Plain Bob

Best fight? Don’t you mean Clint Eastwood’s fight with William Smith at the end of “Any Which Way But Loose”? Or his fight with the Black Widows? Cinematic fried gold.

Richard Maurer

Clarence - the best (and most realistic) movie fight scene I’ve ever seen was in The Final Programme - but I’m pretty sure I’m the only one here who’s seen it. It features the main character fighting another guy in a typical action movie style fight - even swinging on a chain. The problem being neither character knows how to fight, so basically they’re flailing around missing most of their punches and not doing much damage when they do. It’s quite funny.

Richard Maurer

JP Bob - I remember seeing some comic panels about Superman ( with Shazam’s help) lifting something called The Book of Infinite Pages, which is exactly what it’s described to be. This whole concept makes absolutely no sense. Because it seems to mean Superman is stronger than the concept of infinity, as long as he has help?????

Philip Alan

Henry is in Justice League! But watching Zach Snyder’s Justice League is a must. (He’s in Batman V Superman as well)

Clarence Newman

In all seriousity, I watched a couple of seasons of the old Starsky & Hutch series a while back and I really enjoyed the way their fight scenes were choreographed. Instead of the orderly boxing/karate variants you get in a lot of films, it was just as you described - a couple of guys flailing around, tumbling over stuff and mostly swinging at thin air. Unless I'm watching some Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa or JCVD, then for me it makes for a more entertaining and believable fight.

Jenny_M

Rewatching this with you two, I'm struck again by how much I like Cavill and Adams in their roles, and how much I dislike the plot and tone surrounding them. Superman is my favorite superhero, and I grew up reading the comics and watching the George Reeves TV series + the Christopher Reeve movies, but this one just hit a few too many sour notes for me. I hope you'll watch Superman 2025 when it comes to streaming. No spoilers, but I found it to be a great match of actors and tone.

Larry Darrell

Whoa!! For some reason I was thinking The Final Programme film you keep mentioning for PAF was some horror film from like the past 30 years or so. I just realized it was made in 1973, and appears to be more of an odd Sci-Fi Thriller, which looks interesting. I also realized I had put it on a short list of films a while back after watching On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). I was compiling a list of films featuring those Bond girls, and Julie Ege is in The Final Programme. Well that just moved up the list, now. Cool.

Clarence Newman

Ah, so your other favourite Superman is George Reeves from the original series, Joe. An unusual choice.

Clarence Newman

Cassie, you need to watch Batman 1966. It's well funny, and afterwards, you'll be able to knock up exact replicas of the outfit from bin liners and Ben's old longjohns. With Halloween coming up, your kids will love you for it.

Richard Maurer

Larry - The end’s a little off from the novel but that is at least partially because the book ending would have been impossible to film in 73, and hard to film now even with CGI. The film is sort of a mixture of Dr. Strangelove and Austin Powers (Austin Powers mostly aesthetically).

OddThomas

I don't know if this is a bug but I've noticed as soon as I hit the 'full screen' icon, the videos crash. But if I go to Youtube and do full screen from there, it works. (I watch on other Patreon accounts and don't have this problem but just thought I'd mention it.)

Chris Thom

YouTube player is definitely less glitchy.

Chris Thom

Rad movie. Visuals look fantastic. Solid acting. Epic music. Everything looks proper expensive, how it should for that kind of budget. This one tends to get better every time I see it. A bit darker than usual, but all in all I think it fits great in the succession of Superman. Great use of the advancements in CGI.

Chris Thom

I get what you mean. I always watch this movie in parts over a couple of days.

Michael Lynch

Been a long time since I’ve seen this one. I really like him as Superman and his chemistry with Lois Lane. However, the older movies at least the first two Are Way better than this. This is just a CGI fest.

Chris Thom

All that has always felt inevitable to me. Dude has almost unimitated power and strength. All it takes is one moody day for things to go very, very wrong.

Clay F

+1 for Batman 1966. Campy. My top 3 Batman: 1. The Dark Knight trilogy 2. The Batman (2022) (like the aesthetics) 3. Batman (1966)

Larry Darrell

Cool! Gonna go searching for it now.

Chris Thom

Soooo much CGi. I'd forgotten how much.

Chris Thom

Superman movies can go a lot of different directions with tone. This is one take. Then when this gets too dark, they course correct. It could probably go on forever. And might, depending how they do at the box office.

Richard Maurer

Clarence - you made it clear that you haven’t watched that many marvel films because they’ve shown that Iron Man’s suit, while it does afford him some protection it’s definitely not limitless. And some heroes do die, and stay dead. Also as the MCU has been shown not to be in our reality but a different part of the multiverse, physics are bound to work somewhat differently.

thansen

There is one good thing in this film. Faora. That's about it.

Richard Maurer

Larry - if you don’t find it any where else Amazon has it, $3.99 rental I think.

Clarence Newman

I will have to take your word for it. I ran out of brain cells halfway through Ant Man and The Wasp.

Stephen Dias

Fun reaction. I loved their response when Kevin Costner appeared. My friend, Jeff, and I were barely teens when the 1978 Superman movie came out and we loved it. Jeff is not a fan of this movie; he refers to it as "Hipster Superman." I, on the other hand, love both movies. The 1978 movie is more of a fantasy movie. "Man of Steel" is part Superman origin story, part alien invasion movie, which is fitting for Superman, IMO. The other movies in this series are "Batman v Superman" and "Justice League." Snyder had more movies planned, but scrapped them after his daughter's untimely death.

Larry Darrell

Thanks, Richard. I know a place. ;-)

Richard Maurer

Clarence - I don’t believe it. I’m sure you ran out long before that. You set that up perfectly.

Larry Darrell

Clarence - learned a little too late there did ya. I learned my brain cells were more important after seeing Doctor Strange’s Mom in her “nightgown,” the last time I spent the night at Marvel’s house. That was it for me. I haven’t been back to see my old friend Marvel since. That whole family’s just gone cuckoo. I miss my friend Marvel. I hope he snaps out of it one day… some Doomsday perhaps.

Mike Lemon

"Rad movie." Rad? You owned parachute pants didn't you? (edit- damn shift key)

Chris Thom

So, so nice when these movies are actually on a streamer I subscribe to. Seems a bit weird how hard some of them are to find.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree. I'm not old enough to have seen the George Reeves TV show in its original broadcast, but I am old enough to have seen Chris Reeve movies on the big screen as a boy.

John A

they took away most of the mythology and it was no longer Superman to me.

Stick Figure Studios

You know, despite having seen this film maybe half a dozen times since its release, I noticed something on this viewing that I never caught before and I credit Carly for bringing it to my attention. Immediately following the controversial moment where Superman snaps Zod's neck, Carly asked, "But did he save the people?" and It occurred to me that the movie never shows them again after Zod gets killed. I always assumed they were safe, but the movie doesn't even care about them enough to show us that. You can kind of see their legs sticking out of the top of the frame in the background of the medium shot of Superman's back, but that feels like an afterthought as the shot is really about Superman and Zod's body. There is no close-up of the family breathing easy and looking up to see that they're no longer in danger. Once Zod is dead, they basically fulfilled their function in the scene which was to contrive a scenario where Superman would have to take a life. This says to me that that scene was never really about helping innocent people, but was really just about making Superman kill. The civilians are just a device to bring about that provocative act and I think that's part of the reason why I have issues with the sequence and the movie as a whole. It's not really about Superman doing good. It's about trying to challenge and compromise Superman's idealism, values and morals. What really interested the filmmakers in that scene was Superman killing, not Superman saving. I think in general, these filmmakers were interested in Superman for the wrong reasons.

Chris Thom

He just wants something flowy that looks cool while he's flying. He's an aestheticist above all. A bit like Liberace. lol

Chris Thom

I forgot he directed Watchmen. That one doesn't come up too often on the channel.

Chris Thom

I do worry for his girlfriends' safety. On a few levels.

John A

I like Henry Cavill and think he would be a good Superman, but I do not like the scripts given for him, they try to make Superman dark, he is not dark. Mr Kent (Costner) would not teach Clark that maybe he should not have saved the kids in the bus. Jonathan sacrifice his life, when Clark could have saved them without showing that he has super powers. Who was Clark pretending to be with the Cape? was he pretending to be Superman??? Clark moving from place to place just like David Banner in The Incredible HULK Tv series. Superman does not kill yet he did in this one. I could say more hahaha, just did not like it, was hoping watching it again would chance my mind, but no. But was glad to watch it again with Cassie and Carly, but even they were confused during it.

Chris Thom

I just remembered that Ben Affleck played George Reeves as Superman.

Chris Thom

I think Snyder was setting up a narrative where Superman would go bad for a while and possibly become a dictator. Batman v. Superman suggested that in the flash forward scene with Ben Affleck.

John A

Clay, I will have to watch Talk Shelter never seen it, but I do like Michael Shannon. of the 4 Superman movies that you had seen, I would move Superman 2 to the 2nd spot. Superman (1978) is still the best and seems it will stay there until they get Superman right. In my option.

Stick Figure Studios

I believe you are right. I remember reading about that somewhere and, and as you point out, the *SPOILER AHEAD* dream sequence in BVS foreshadows that. My understanding is that it would have been the death of Lois Lane and the influence of Darkseid that would have precipitated his fall. Once again, that tells me that Snyder and company really didn't know what to do with Superman in these movies. He was mostly going to be either absent (because he was dead) or evil. *END OF SPOILER* I'm not sure they really even understood Superman's righteousness, let alone were able to work it elegantly and purposefully into their storytelling, so their plan was to basically just ignore it. They were really more interested / invested in "Evil Superman" and all of the destruction and damage that he could do.

Clay F

John -- good point about Superman 2 which is critically acclaimed and liked by seasoned Superman fans. I watched Superman 2 for the first time 8 months ago (along w/her reaction) and thus had no nostalgia. A little too goofy at times for me. Also, too much of dated feel for me (oddly that didn't distract me w/the first Superman). I just didn't like Superman 2 that much. Even the Hackman performance didn't sway me. Superman 2 came across old to me with dated effects that distracted me too much to be swept up by the action/drama.

Clay F

You've reacted to 4 Superman movies. You implied in the intro that you may react to Superman (2025), which I welcome that reaction. That would make 5 Superman movies. After reacting to Superman (2025), you could move on from Superman and react, for example, to "Wonder Woman" (2017) (ranked No. 20 at Popcorn Requests) starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Definitely skip "Wonder Woman 1984" (2020).

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely should do the first WW, but I'm one of those weirdos that actually likes the second one, so I'd be fine if she did that one too.

Clay F

I know I said "definitely" skip, but I am really not a hard no. Just prefer too many other movies. As for the first WW, I was surpised how much I liked it and would welcome a reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree, Larry, with your first comment. I don't think Superman needs to be angsty or "relatable." He's supposed to be aspirational. He represents an ideal, something we strive towards even if we never actually achieve it. He's the kind of person who does good simply because it's the right thing to do, not because he has some ulterior motive like revenge or guilt like most other superheroes. We are supposed to look up to him, not want him down here on the ground with us. For me, that's what sets him apart from every other comic book hero.

Canadianant

Again count this as one more movie that I haven't seen since it was in the theater. There was some good bits. I think Cavill was a good Superman, I always like Amy Adams . It was worth watching your reaction just for the Costner factor of all of it. That having been said I missed the Clark Kent secretly being superman bit . The story was a bit of a mess. Strange enough like some others have mentioned I actually managed to fall asleep during the last half hour of this. To be fair I just worked 11 hours so my chair was extra comfy. The senseless destruction just kind of went on and on and on but I found I didn't really care. Just a CGI mess. As to if Cassie should watch any further DC verse sequels, I'll have to defer to others here as I literally haven't watched them as the tone kind of had my interest waning. Someone else had had suggested Snyder's watchman which I actually quite like but if cassie should watch it I don't know. It pretty dark and it's certainly not your average superhero movie . Love Rorschach though excellent performance there.

Stick Figure Studios

Very flawed but still worth seeing... particularly the extended edition.

Stick Figure Studios

I I'm not unsympathetic with that perspective, John. He was Superman "enough" for me to mostly enjoy the movie, but much of it is problematic for me.

Stick Figure Studios

@Larry: I never saw REVENGE OF THE FALLEN because I not only gave up on any more TRANSFORMERS movies after suffering through the first one, I gave up on any more Michael Bay-directed movies. Period. Life is just too short and I have yet to regret my decision.

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe he's pretending to be Leonidas from 300 as he may have an interest in things from ancient Greece (he is reading Plato after all in the flashback where the bullies attack him).

Stick Figure Studios

I mostly liked the movie myself, but I am not unsympathetic to those with that opinion.

Stick Figure Studios

The new James Gunn film is definitely a course correction from the tone of these movies.

Stick Figure Studios

If anything, I think the Snyder Superman movies show the danger of taking the character *too* seriously.

Stick Figure Studios

Was going to say the same thing, Doug, about the so-called death of Zod and his cohorts in the second movie, but you beat me to it.

Stick Figure Studios

The fact that he never goes there is what makes him so admirable. It's why Superman is not Homelander.

Steve Holton

For those wondering about the cape scene with young Clark near the clothes line. He was clearly inspired by the caped lawyer in Seinfeld. The episode debuted in 1994, so the timing works out perfectly. https://youtu.be/bHNqri_0Mbo?si=dwWY08HRehru1IrK But seriously. The scene is a little odd, but young Clark could just be mimicking some old swashbuckling film he watched with his parents. The 3 Musketeers all wore capes etc. Some like to joke he must be mimicking Liberace since no one else wore capes. Actually, Elvis started wearing capes before Liberace and Elvis was inspired to wear them by his favorite comic book hero Captain Marvel Jr.

Stick Figure Studios

@Doug: Yeah, to say that "character X has done Y in the comics" is pretty much a meaningless statement at this point. After decades of varying interpretations of these fictional creations by a whole army of writers and artists, there are going to be incidents where they do things that might be generally considered out of character for them. The issue isn't "Has Superman ever killed?" The issue is: "What have been the overall accepted parameters of this character for most of his / her history" and "What justifiable motivation does any particular storyteller have for pushing the character outside of those boundaries?" I mean, in the original comics Superman didn't even fly. He just jumped really far (hence, the famous "leap tall buildings in a single bound" quote), yet I dare say you will be hard-pressed to find a depiction of Superman nowadays that doesn't feature him flying (the show SMALLVILLE being an exception, but that was about young Clark Kent learning how to use his powers, so he wasn't really even Superman yet). Flying is just what Superman does now. Same thing with not killing.

Stick Figure Studios

@Ren: She's not bad. She's just kind of... there. Feels like these movies didn't really know what to do with her. She does some good investigative journalism, yrs, but she still comes off as very bland and vanilla. Lois Lane should be a more charismatic, dynamic, feisty and funny in her personality. This is why Margot Kidder, Rachel Brosnahan, Erica Durance and even, God help me, Teri Hatcher are all superior to Amy Adams. They are fun and interesting. Adams looks good but is just kind of dull. One thing I will give to her, though, is that she's better than Kate Bosworth, who is cute but terrible.

Michael G

Good thing this is an adaptation and none of that matters

Ike

Yeah, no spoilers here but I think we all know there are more Zack Snyder moral head-scratchers ahead.

Mike Lemon

Maybe The Shadow? He was before Superman in the real world.

John A

Stick Figure Studios, I totally agree with everything you said, plus Superman and Lois kissing in the middle of the destroyed city, where so many lives must have been lost, also shows no real concern for the people. I who is left in that city wow.

Steve Holton

Good point Mike. Superman a very innovative super powered character, but not the first with a cape.

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe he was mimicking Leonidas from 300 because he just has a fascination with things from ancient Greece. I mean, after all, he was reading Plato in the scene where the bullies attack him.

Steve Holton

Yes Stick, he was reading Plato's "Republic". A book which outlines a society like Krypton with people born to certain roles. Warrior, farmer, etc.

Jayson Phillips

Loved it!!! You girls are my fav reactors, I really hope you do more of the DC movies except Suicide Squad, don't think you sis would love the gore

Joe J

I like Znyder's darker interpretation, more grounded in reality. Superman may gain the ultimate victory, but there are losses (deaths) along the way. That's a story I can get invested in.

Chris Thom

In Superman lore, wasn't the cape placed inside his escape pod? Or was that Clark's idea to add it?

Larry Darrell

Well said Stick. That’s what I was going for.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't begrudge anybody for whom this take floats their boat. If you like the darker Superman, then go with God, but for me, this interpretation sacrifices the very thing that makes Superman such a special character in the first place for the sake of being more "realistic" (which I, frankly, think is kind of an absurd notion; I don't mind Batman being more realistic, but I think Superman should be more fantastic).

Steve Holton

Chris, different iterations have different explanations for the cape. The point may be moot in this film, since he's play acting with the cape before his father reveals the truth of his heritage.

Chris Thom

I remember after Superman Returns had a mediocre box office people were talking about how to keep the franchise interesting and the character not so 'boring'. Hence the darker tone and why everything feels a bit off. They probably brought Snyder in to shake things up and prepare audiences for new kind of storyline. That probably only happened because Returns was a bit stale. But I remember it was only a few months after it's release that the studio announced (or let it leak) that they would go a new direction.

Stick Figure Studios

At the time of this movie is released, Snyder wasn't the important creative force behind the movie so much as it was Christopher Nolan whose rebooted Batman trilogy was breaking box office records and becoming the stick by which all comic book movies were being measured. I think that's why it's darker and why they more or less imposed the Batman formula on the Superman character, which doesn't entirely work.

Chris Thom

Supposedly they're mostly based on the legend of Hercules. And Superman was more influenced by the book Gladiator by Phillip Wylie (1930) which in turn was influenced by Hercules.

Chris Thom

I still haven't seen that Flash movie. Wondering if it was any good.

Stick Figure Studios

I like the Flash movie.. If for no other reason then we got to see Michael Keaton play Batman again.

Larry Darrell

I loved the 1940s Max Fleischer Superman cartoons when I was a kid. Just recently bought them on Blu-ray. They look amazing!

Brian's Dog

I liked this but I'm still with with '78 Superman as my fave. Also liked Brandon Routh. I have the 2025 Superman bluray preordered but haven't seen the movie yet. Hope it gets here when you react to it.

Just Plain Bob

Superman also blatantly ripped off the Fortress of Solitude from Doc Savage. A secret base/home located in the Arctic, no one but the protagonist knows where it’s at and, of course, the name itself. All introduced in Doc Savage magazine stories more than a decade before being introduced in Superman.

Larry Darrell

I liked the first Transformers (2007), and still do. The 80s nostalgia gets me. It’s a film I would have loved even more as a kid. Having said that, I’m remembering that I actually fell asleep before the end of it, last time I watched it. Maybe I’m just getting older and all the mindless CG action doesn’t hold my attention anymore. 🤷‍♂️ I watched the 3rd and completely unnecessary 4th Transformers movies when they came out, they basically the same as the 2nd. CG overload. Very meh, and don’t even remember them. I liked Pain & Gain (2013). That was more of a return to his 90s and 00s stuff. There was a story being told, that I could follow. I loved 13 Hours (2016). Michael Bay’s best movie. When I saw he was doing ANOTHER Transformers movie, and realized Transformers was gonna be Michael Bay’s Avatar, I then gave up on him. Haven’t watched anything from him since.

Mojo One Thousand

When Costner wasn't mentioned in the intro, there was an unsurprisingly gleeful reaction, which was fun. This has a good cast. Michael Shannen is great at being not very likeable charatcers. I'm glad Richard Schiff was called out from the "The West Wing", his "Toby Zeigler" character is one of my favourites from any TV show, and funnily a guest spot on that show is where I became aware of Amy Adams a couple of years prior to her star really rising, so this is a bit of a reunion. As much as I like Cavill as ""Superman", Christopher Reeve is still my "Superman". Maybe it has something to do with him never really being "Clark". Although he gets called "Clark" by his parents, he always seems to be "Kal-El" by another name, and in this version "Lois" is always aware of who he is, which is the main tension of his secret identity. This movie is technically well done, but does seem to be a confection, it's enjoyable while it is being viewed, but is largely empty calories. This seems a trait with most of Zack Snyder's work from my experience. I do agree with opinions I have heard in the past that he makes great trailers, but the full length movies leave a bit to be desired. I know that Christopher Nolan is involved which adds some cachet, but as mainly producing as is was extending off his "Dark knight" trilogy at time. He has story credit for this, but it feels like he contributions were mainly the non-linear storytelling structure, basically his trademark. And although, David S. Goyer was a writer on this and the "Dark knight" trilogy, they seem quite different and it would seem Nolan's brother Jonathan, may have done the heavy lifting of those movies. I guess the aspect that probably leaves it a bit hollow, is it seems to lack heart compared to the Reeve/Donner "Superman", and focuses on "Superman" punching stuff. And, the variation on the "Jonathan Kent" demise seems odd to me, as "Clark" would have been able to do the job without raising suspicions of his abilities, which seemed to be "Jonathan Kent's" biggest gripe. But the demise being heart failure, is more about "Superman's" power having limits and so the how and why are important, rather the when they should be used, which seems to be the main driver here. I wouldn't be against continuing through the DCEU, where surprising Ben Affleck's "Batman/Bruce Wayne" is one of the better elements.

Larry Darrell

@Stick - Exactly! And another thing they have been doing in comic book/superhero films for a while now is choosing things from comics to adapt and thinking since they are taking from the comics, people will love it because they are pulling from the “source” material. And not considering how popular that comic was. So many times Marvel and DC both have adapted storylines and plot points from comics that literally only sold in the thousands, and were cancelled. And they for some reason, won’t adapt the ones that sold in the 100s of thousands or millions. There is a clear, proven popular direction for all these characters, that would be the most guaranteed successful direction, but time and time again, they cherry pick the things they like most from the comics, because it fits the “look” they want to show, and they annoy half their audience, right off the bat. Look at the female Silver Surfer in the new Fantastic Four. Why did they feel the need to do that? Just because they could. Even though the consensus from any large group of comic fans would tell you, Norrin Radd was the only true Silver Surfer.

Joe J

You want this movie to be Superman 78 all over again, which IMO is quite an absurd notion.

Stick Figure Studios

Nope. Wrong. That's a gross oversimplification of my perspective and a very uncharitable reading of the many comments I have written all across this thread both praising and criticizing various aspects of the film, but if you want to think that about me, go ahead. I can't stop you nor do I really even care what you think anymore. I may also want to remember your name as someone I should probably not interact with going forward. I'm too old to waste my time arguing with people online who don't even bother to try to understand the complexities and nuances of where I'm coming from (there a couple of other rather rude people on here that I also ignore). So, peace. I hope you and Henry Cavill's "Superman" are very happy together.

K, Zachary

All right we're live. Or pre recorded however you look at it. Remember Seinfeld had that fascination with Superman? Like this montage and I know how you like montages Cassie https://youtu.be/-5udCac7sgw?si=g1yIQ5oW7Jkns04l Anyways yeah my gf was like I am 2 mins out make sure both are ready to go. So as she popped in the door we started it. We both love your question and answer sessions between the two. One person asks a question the other one answers it. That's the way sisters/best friends should be. I really liked this Superman in Deadpool & Wolverine

Jay

The score to this film was fantastic. I appreciated the acting if not the writing of Jonathan Kent. It’s funny that the darker tone to this movie is the cause for Gunn to go way too weird and comedic/ too James gunny for the new film. These films need more balance.

Clay F

I liked Keaton as Batman.

Stick Figure Studios

It's impossible to write a Superman score that equals John Williams' magnificent one for the 1978 film, but Zimmer comes close.

Stick Figure Studios

Savage was also known as "The Man of Bronze" and his first name was even Clark.

Stick Figure Studios

The Fleischer shorts are terrific. I used to have a videotape of those I'd watch a lot as a kid to. I was quite pleased when BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES debuted on TV in the early 90s and I could tell Fleischer's SUPERMAN was a big influence.

Stick Figure Studios

I loved TRANSFORMERS as a boy in the 80s... and that is why I hated the first movie. No nostalgia was strong enough to wipe the sour taste of that piece of s**t out of my mouth. Prior to that I'd seen THE ROCK, ARMAGEDDON and PEARL HARBOR and I began to realize that these movies were not getting any better... indeed they were getting worse, so that was when I quit Bay and never looked back.

Stick Figure Studios

@Phillip: And without spoiling anything, its climax is directly reminiscent of the enfing to 1978's SUPERMAN.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Cassie and Carly, I really loved your reaction to Man of Steel. It was such a fun throwback revisiting the movie that kicked off the whole DCEU/Snyderverse back in 2013. From there, we got a wild ride—Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League (especially the Snyder Cut), Aquaman, Shazam!, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad (way better than the first and directed by James Gunn), Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. It's a lot, and yeah, that's the release order for all of them. Like That said, now with the new Superman out, it honestly feels like a fresh start. It's more comic-accurate, lighter in tone, and captures that hopeful, inspiring energy that defines Superman. It feels closer to the spirit of the Christopher Reeve era—more family-friendly, more heart. It's Superman done right and I'm really hoping this new DCU builds something that reflects the best of the comics, the animated shows like the DCAU, the Arrowverse, Smallville—all the versions I grew up with. I still respect what the DCEU tried to do, and I'll always appreciate Henry Cavill's Superman. But I've already started embracing David Corenswet in the role, and I'm excited to see where James Gunn takes things next—with the new Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League. Whether you two end up reacting to more of the DCEU or dive into the upcoming DCU films, I'm totally here for it. Can't wait to see what's ahead. Oh, and in case you were wondering about the '90s version of Superman—that was Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman with Teri Hatcher (yep, from Desperate Housewives) and Dean Cain. Funny enough, that show is what actually made me a Superman fan in the first place. It pulled me in before I even knew I was a fan. After Lois & Clark ended, I got hooked on Superman: The Animated Series, which blew me away—especially knowing it was in the same universe as Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. That whole animated universe really shaped how I saw these characters. But thinking back, I think my earliest exposure to Superman was actually from the 1988 Superman cartoon and the live-action Superboy series from the same year. I only remember bits and pieces—random scenes, really—but they were definitely part of it along with the Christopher Reeve movies when I was really little. I barely understood what I was watching, but something about them stuck with me.

Doug Fisher

Not only did I own parachute pants, but I rode a BMX and was an extra in the move "RAD"... so I have your back Chris. 😉😁 @Mike I feel your pain... I am CONSTANTLY hitting return and forgetting the SHIFT. SMH

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

I get where you're coming from, but the new Superman isn't some quirky comedy like people keep assuming. That take honestly misses how much it actually respects the source material. It's way more comic-accurate than it's being given credit for. James Gunn is clearly pulling from All-Star Superman, the Silver Age comics, and so many of the stories that made Superman timeless in the first place. Yeah, it's lighter—but not in a bad or goofy way. It feels like a love letter to the comics, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, My Adventures with Superman, and even carries the heart of the Christopher Reeve era. Hopeful. Warm. Inspiring. That's what Superman's supposed to be. And sure, James Gunn's putting his own stamp on it—but not at the character's expense. It's got heart, it's got sincerity, and it's got optimism—something that's been missing from the live-action version for a long time. And I totally agree—these films do need balance. But that's exactly what this feels like. It's not over-the-top camp, and it's not grimdark either. It just lets Superman be who he was meant to be. I really appreciated the score and performances in Man of Steel. But this whole "Gunn's too weird" take doesn't really hold up once you see what this new film is going for. It finally feels like Superman is being done right. And personally, I'm really excited to see where it goes from here.

Clarence Newman

In defence of Chris Thom's use of the word "Rad", please remember he has only recently watched the Cliffhanger reaction and the base jumping dudes must still be fresh in his head.

Chris Thom

Just watched it today and I was struck by how good the score was. One of the best things about the movie. Foreboding but hopeful. Best part was maybe the first flying scene.

Chris Thom

Michael Shannen was really good in Revolutionary Road.

Chris Thom

Thanks, Clarence. Tubular of you. Cliffhanger triggered my fear of heights in the gnarliest of ways.

Chris Thom

No way, Doug! That's...well rad. For all intents and purposes. I always get that mixed up with the Josh Brolin one Thrashin'.

Chris Thom

Oh that's right. Batman Begins came out before Returns. I keep thinking that started with Dark Knight. I remember that early Batman v. Superman poster in I Am Legend (2007) a full nine years before the movie came out. That was really odd. Remember wondering if that was an inside joke or something.

Rick Rodriguez

@Chris and @Philip. Facts on ending.

Chris Thom

That Lois and Clark show was a lot of fun. Kind of a soap opera version of the franchise. Lots of use of the backlot, which is fun to see on the WB tour. Think it's a net positive all the different directions they take the franchise.

Richard Maurer

Cassie - You should really watch Thunderbolts. It’s even tangentially connected to the Superman mythos.

fastecp1

Even with this incredible cast, I still like the original better. It would have been better if they had made this about 45 minutes shorter. They dragged out the over-the-top CGI fight scenes way too long. Bringing Clark in at the end was a big mistake; he should have been in from the start. It's not one of my favorites.

Ignis Rændl

enjoyed this full watch along. usually prefer the youtube edits but i haven't seen this one in a while so i busted out the bluray🤫 I'm probably the only 80s kid that didn't like '78 Superman, i really liked Superman Returns and Cavill's Superman. I'm hoping James Gunn's version will be just as good.🤞 Great reaction anyways. i hope you both watch Nolan's Batman trilogy and Gal's Wonder Woman.

McShades

The next two movies that have Cavill's Superman in it is Batman Vs Superman and Justice League, make sure you watch the Director's Cut of both those movies, the Theatrical Cuts were really bad. Christopher Nolan who did the Batman Trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) started Man of Steel after he finished the Batman trilogy, he wrote part of the script and started it, but decided he wanted to Direct Interstellar instead so he handed Man of Steel off to Zack Snyder to finish it.

Mojo One Thousand

That's been on my list for a very long time, but I know it's heavy so I think ai have subconsciously been avoiding it.

OddThomas

I like the next one, Batman v Superman, but I also think it's where Cavill's Superman went too dark and it's more a Batman film than a Superman film. The Ultimate Cut is also better than the theatrical.

Joe J

Probably the sheer camp in Batman 66 would not hit with Cassie. I thought she would love "Big Trouble in Little China" and "The Fifth Element", but both films were real head-scratchers for her.

Clarence Newman

I think Cassie's learned the difference between a silly movie that knows it's being silly and one that thinks it's being serious but comes across as silly. She appreciates the former while the latter tends to fall flat. One thing you could never say about Batman '66 is that it doesn't know what it is.

Stick Figure Studios

It was a joke. There was no movie or plans for a movie at that point.

Stick Figure Studios

@Chris: The scene where Superman learns to fly is the best scene in all of Cavill's tenure as this character.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree with you about the new film, Michael. I liked it quite a bit and think it is probably the best Superman film since the 1978 original.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree with you, Clarence. She has really enjoyed some intentionally silly and cheesy movies, so I think she would get a kick out of 1966's BATMAN (and it would give her more of an appreciation for what Burton accomplished).

Philip Alan

Yes, the ULTIMATE EDITION is the way to go!

phillip giroux

Not a terrible movie, but I describe it as a Superman movie made by someone who doesn't like Superman for people who don't like Superman. Which I kinda respect as a creative choice, after all, I do know that there are lots of folks who think the traditional Superman is too corny or too good or just not their cup of tea.

Bill Maurer

I think it went dark because of the ending of Batman v Superman (avoiding spoilers). I think that is one of the reason this is not the campy / nerdy Ken Clark or Superman. But, to each his own

Rainbow Dash

i would love to see them react to the next films Batman v Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Chris Thom

I really don't think it's about not liking Superman. It's just recognizing what might happen if he had a series of very bad days. On rewatch they really seemed to make a lot of normal humans pretty awful to Clark. I think that was intentional for later storyline.

LukeG84

Just finished watching this one. Was great seeing Carly along for this one. That was unexpected. What a great reaction video. Made this epic movie all the more enjoyable seeing Cassie & Carly's shocked faces throughout. I can't wait for Batman v Superman. Don't want to give anything away, but everything you want and more is in that movie. I'm sure many people have already posted this, but here's what to watch next: 2) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) - Ultimate Edition 3) Wonder Woman (2017) 4) Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) Please don't watch Justice League (2016). Zack Snyder's daughter passed away during filming and Joss Wheadon came in a ruined it with unnecessary reshoots. The internet did it's thing and Zack Snyder finally got to release his version in 2021. It's four hours long, and for some reason he released it in 4:3 aspect ratio despite it not getting a theatre release, but it's one hell of a movie. P.s. I highly recommend watching Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad (2021), and Peacemaker season one BEFORE watching James Gunn's Superman movie. Peacemaker season two will be a direct sequel to the new Superman movie in James Gunn's new DC universe, and you need to watch both Suicide Squad movies for Peacemaker season one to make sense.

Clay F

I welcome a reaction to Wonder Woman (2017) [RT 93%] [PR No. 19]. Good movie. Gal Gadot. Chris Pine. I've watched Wonder Woman (2017) three times. Please avoid Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Ultimate Edition) (2016) [RT 28%] [PR No. 1578]. We've had enough Batman. Do Schumacher Kilmer Batman if you must. My exception = you do a rewatch of the Nolan trilogy. Also, we've had enough Superman, except welcome Superman (2025) you indicated you wanted to react to. That would make 5 Superman movies on the channel. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice smothers a potentially powerful story -- and some of America's most iconic superheroes -- in a grim whirlwind of effects-driven action."

Joe J

I would welcome the next two Snyder films + Wonder Woman. As you know, I'm not a fan of re-watches. Both have seen the Nolan Batman films, so not a first-time watch for Carly. Let me add that Cassie needs more monthly wins on YT. Seems reasonable to assume Superhero movies will get more views for her.

Clarence Newman

I prefer the prequel - Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974).

Richard Maurer

Thunderbolts is better. Unlike you I’ve actually seen both movies.

Kiss the Librarian

I really enjoy the hinting at a bootstrap paradox in Superman's lore that I don't think was in the comics (but I read more Batman growing up, so idk). It's fun to think humans from Earth are the ancestors who eventually leave Earth to colonize various other planets, including Krypton, where human genetic code becomes the basis for the engineered population in Krypton's future. Kal-Al is a natural born guy sent back to Earth using a wormhole to time travel back to before humans leave Earth, "to ensure humanity's survival" according to his dad. - If Earthlings die, Kryptonians never exist. - But also, without a guy from Krypton (Superman), humans would get up to so much trouble they might kill themselves (relatable), so he has to save them so he can be born centuries later - So Superman needs them as much as they need him I don't enjoy the heavy religion vs science overtones, or the savior arms Superman had when he flew back down to Earth, or Superman's reckless destruction of a bunch of buildings in Smallville and Metropolis by pointlessly pushing the bad guy through a bunch of rubble. Even just in terms of an action sequence, it's pretty boring The pacing in the first half was great. Really wish the sequels filled in the character development & dialogue gaps left by this one, but alas. The gist of those is that you shouldn't beat up a guy whose mom was named Martha.

Walter Crockett

Hey Cassie, Great reaction. If you watch the second film in the franchise it is Batman V Superman. Please watch the Ultimate Edition, the 3 hour directors cut. Not only is it better, it fells short than the shorter theatrical edition, mainly because it does a better job laying out the story, and as a viewer you spend less time trying to figure out what is going on.

Rick Williams

First time seeing this movie. There is a lot of actions. I think a little more than was needed. But it was a good movie. It was great having Carly along for the ride. Great reaction Cassie & Carly.

Clarence Newman

Objection, your honour! (Why?) Because it's devastating to my case!

Clifton Owens

Thank you for the Bright Angels, Cassie and Carly, the Dynamic Duo. It seems you both thought Cavell was cute, as Superman and Clark Kent.

Chris Thom

What is the Bootstrap Paradox?

Kiss the Librarian

The bootstrap paradox, also known as an ontological paradox or causal loop, is a time travel scenario where an object or piece of information travels back in time and becomes the origin of itself. It's called a bootstrap because it's a loop connecting two distant places in time, such that one end cannot exist without the other. In this case, the thing traveling back in time would be Superman, the descendant of a planet colonized by humans, and he sort of becomes the origin of himself by keeping humans safe & bringing advanced tech with him so that humans can later have the ability to colonize other planets - including the one he came from. It's a paradox because, how could Superman be born in the "future" unless he helped humans in the "past" as an adult, so that he could then be born? For a really, really good sci fi exploration of this idea, and other quantum physics shenanigans, I highly recommend the German miniseries "Dark."

Darren Harrison

My favorite part of the reaction was the delight at the appearance of Kevin Costner. Cassie - having already encountered a version of General Zod in “Superman II” you should recall that all kryptonians have the same powers. The suits have nothing to do with it 😀

Chris Thom

Honestly didn't know they were both that into Costner. Trying to remember which of his movies are even on the channel.

Clay F

They love Costner. I think it all started w/Dances with Wolves.

Archronos

We went through a whole phase of Costner much to my delight. Dances with Wolves is on there, so is No Way Out, Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Untouchables. So yes, the ladies do know Costner more than in passing. I knew there was gonna be smiles and giddyness as soon as he spoke

Johnny Bullis

Hey Cass.. love the reaction as always.. even though The Snyderverse is dead these are still some good movies. Now you have to check out Batman V Superman and the Snyder Cut of The Justice League to finish out the trilogy. Interesting fact.. both fathers in this movie Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe have both played Robin Hood in a movie. Also, you should check out the other DCEU movies like Wonder Woman and Aquaman, both are very good.. their sequels not so much. And the new Superman movie is awesome.. Im looking forward to what James Gunn can do.

Andrew Heller

Is that bootstrap paradox like the whole kyle reese is john connors dad

Dean Holt

48 minutes in to the film Asgard… 😂😂. But that was a fun reaction, also like how you kinda mentioned why are they sending Zod away when the planet going to die. That’s always bugged me, but obviously if he dies they don’t have a villain for the film and I thought he was excellent playing Zod. Despite a couple of flaws I do really like this version of Superman, because I’m happy he didn’t try and play it like Christopher R. I’d also really like to see you both continue this journey with Batman V Superman. But I also think you might really enjoy the Harley Quinn & Shazam! as they are a bit lighter and a lot of fun. Another recommendation but maybe not to do a reaction to as it’s a documentary. Is Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. It tells his story so well but you will need a lot of tissues.

Carol Rocha

Kevin Costner.. what a bonus!!! And Russell Crowe?!! Wow! Ohmygosh Momma is Diane Lane (Secretariat) 😉❤️❤️❤️

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Technically, Creature Commandos - Season 1 (2024) kicks off the new DCU, but Superman (2025) is really the big launch that sets the tone. Peacemaker - Season 2 drops in this month, and while it's not a straight-up sequel to Superman, it's clearly connected. James Gunn's already deep into writing Superman 2, and from what I've heard, it might even be a team-up film — that one will be a direct sequel and I heard he's already working on a new Wonder Woman film too even a Batman: The Brave and the Bold film. Then we've got Supergirl and Clayface coming in 2026, plus Lanterns as the next big DCU TV series. Everything moving forward — films, shows, animation — it's all part of this new, fully connected universe DC Studios and James Gunn's building. Kind of like what Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige have been currently doing with the MCU.

MannyDC

As promised im a member now 🤘🏽 can’t wait to see ur DCEU journey 💪🏾 in order next will be Batman V. Superman: Ultimate Edition, Suicide Squad: Extended Cut, Wonder Woman, Zack Snyders Justice League, Aquaman, Shazam. They're other movies after i just dont care for them 🤷🏽‍♂️

Matt Rowland

So....the actor who played Zod...many years ago towards the beginning of his career, he had a small but memorable role in Groundhog Day. He was the young man who got married and he thanked Bill Murray at the end at the groundhog dance with his new wife. 😁

Matt Rowland

Please stop telling Cassie to not watch films in a series that you personally didn't enjoy. Many others did enjoy them, and you should simply let her make up her own mind if she likes them. Watch it, dont watch it, but let her decide.

Clay F

Matt, legitimate feedback is positive or negative.

Stephen Dias

Today, I had this movie and reaction on in the background while I was doing other things. At 23:04, when Carly said, "oh shoot!" the power went out. That pretty much summed how I felt at that moment. 😂

Wayne McKinney

Now that Cassie & Carly have seen the fantasy version of what a person might be like if he had the powers of a Superman, she should watch a more realistic version. "Brightburn" tells the story of a boy entering puberty and finding he is the most powerful person on the planet and what he might do with those powers.

Orion

Crucial that she watches Batman v Superman “ultimate edition” and “Zack Snyder’s justice league” aka the Snyder cut! Let’s make sure she knows!

Kraackin

this movies is 1000x better then the new one

Stephen Dias

Huh. Never realized that was him and I watched that recently. Now, I need to look again.

jay

That whole 'Jonathan Kent - Let Them Die' thing was so was pretty bad though.

Thamor

Fully agree, this movie aged well. When I first seen it was little critical on it, but compared what we have gotten in these past 12 years this was a masterpiece.
