Edgar Gonzalez

I saw this movie as a kid. Very powerful, and it introduced me to the song "ain't no mountain high enough" Sung by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Excelent movie to react to Cassie! ❤️

MGCR

The fact that this brilliant movie lost at the box office to Patch Adams might be my villain origin story...

Tyler Hale

Man, screw that movie Patch Adams. Lol that’s a manipulating, poorly written movie

Stick Figure Studios

It's a sweet, heartfelt little movie. The cast is good, the actors give solid performances and the music score by John Williams is lovely (and more restrained than he is typically known for). I just wish it were a bit less treacly. Chris Columbus is a talented screenwriter, but as as a dramatic director I think he relies a little too much on the obvious and the overt when subtlety and suggestion would be more effective. As MGCR said (and as Ebert pointed out in his middling review), it's not nearly as shamelessly saccharine and manipulative as PATCH ADAMS (which was released at the same time), so that is in its favor, but it doesn't move me quite as much as I think it's trying to just because I can tell when I'm being pushed to cry rather than just invited to. To be clear, I don't hate the film. In fact, despite its shortcomings, I actually kind of like it. It just doesn't affect me nearly as much as, say, MY LIFE with Michael Keaton (definitely have Kleenex handy if you ever see that one). Nonetheless STEPMOM is certainly worth watching and I had a feeling you ladies would respond to it so I'm looking forward to this reaction. I haven't viewed it in a long time myself, so I'm interested in revisiting it with you.

Yeji Shin

This film crushed me when I watched it as a kid, it's done the same again today . 😭

JL_83

Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris, and a very young Johanna Mason (Jena Malone), so you know it has to be good

Cole Jennett

My Life is #1 on my list of movies that destroyed me.

Mojo One Thousand

Every since I was kid, I think "I saw what did there Chris Columbus" every time I see the "1492 productions" name appear, even though it is not the history of where I am from, so would have known from consuming media and not through schooling. Between this and "A Monster Calls" it brings up memories of when my sister had cancer. Although she made it through and is still with us, ponding the alternative sometimes passes through ones mind. Comments like "she shouldn't be doing this alone" I completely agree with, based on my experience. Other than some moments where a little communication would have easily resolved the situation, it a fine little movie with some nice performances.

Michael West

I really like this movie. I thought Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon really gave great performances. As you said, it was just about real life situations. Other than "cancer" there is really no villain. The scene between Jackie and Isabel in the restaurant talking about Anna's wedding is one of my all time favorite scenes.

Clarence Newman

Excuse me, but....why is this one being posted before Lost In Translation when Lost In Translation was before this one in the update schedule? I believe there's a law, and you're already on parole for bumping A Perfect World off a recent poll.

Joe J

Neither movie had enough kills and explosions for my taste.

Clarence Newman

No worries. She can follow them up with Commando and Rambo 2.

Cole Jennett

Oof, it was just as I remembered. How am I supposed to function for the rest of the day now? Drink lots of fluids I guess.🥺

Carol Rocha

Ohmygosh!! I love this movie!!!!! 🍿 ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Jenny_M

I remember our family got our first DVD player, and this movie came with it as a freebie. Watching it at 14/15, I don't think I fully "got" it, but revisiting it at 40, even as someone without kids... whew, wow. Great performances, and it was lovely to revisit it with both of you. <3

Carol Rocha

You said it C & C ……a slice of life. Indeed….❤️ I never miss a chance to watch this one. And yes, I needed a good cry today. It never disappoints. ❤️😊

MikeLL

Loved the reaction! First time watch for me. One of the ultimate tearjerkers, but everyone was so real, the performances so both heartbreaking and endearing, that everything works in this movie. Nothing feels manufactured, it was a great watch. Nothing beats watching Cassie, and Carly, cry for an hour straight!

Chris Thom

Great performances by all. But Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts were especially great in this. Wouldn't mind more Susan Sarandon on the channel. The Client and Thelma and Louise are some other good ones.

Chris Thom

Oh I didn't know John Williams did the score. And had actually forgot Columbus directed. Haven't seen this in a while, but do remember seeing it at the theater when it came out.

Cole Jennett

I actually expected there to be more tears. At least as many as me, lol

Chris Thom

I think this and Heard it Through the Grapevine were the first I heard. Great tracks. Marvin Gaye is incredible.

Story Archer

This has been #4 on my 'Top 25 must-watch for Carly and Cassie' ever since I joined Patreon. It's so nice to be able to scratch another one off the list!

Story Archer

Did they pick up that the daughter was Jena Malone (the daughter from 'For Love of the Game') and the badass from 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire'? I know that Carly loves her. Ed Harris was also in 'The Abyss' which they loved.

Cole Jennett

It took a bit but Carly eventually does

fire12wife

I was raised by my stepdad while also spending time with my biological father on weekends and holidays. My stepdad poured EVERYTHING into all 5 of us kids. We had a great childhood because of him. He lived with us every day and was involved with every part of our lives. I couldn't dream of a better stepdad! We lost him to COPD last November. I'm so glad that I got to spend time with him and thank him for all he did for us. My brother also became a stepfather and always says he learned how to treat your stepkids, and to raise them... and that having both fathers in the picture was a good thing! Our stepdad always stood up for my father... and my mother. My stepdad and mother got divorced while I was in high school, but my stepdad was the one who stayed and was always there for us. This movie hits me so differently, now that I'm an adult, just having lost him. We miss him terribly, and we all love him with everything we have! He stepped up when he didn't have to. For ALL 5 of us, he was there... and we couldn't be more grateful for all he did. He may have been our stepdad, but we just called him Dad... because that's what he was! He earned that from us! It didn't change our relationship with our biological father, only that he made it better! I had both of my dads walk me down the aisle when I got married. They couldn't have been prouder! It's so true... you can have them both... you can love them both! Thanks for the good cry! It's going to be a tough holiday season without him. Great reaction as always, ladies! See you in the next, God bless!

Jacob Gregg

Can you guy check out " Our Friend" amazing movie both of you its a biographical drama

Clay F

+1 for Susan Sarandon. +1 for Thelma (my PAF at times). Another great Susan Sarandon movie: “DEAD MAN WALKING” (1995) (based on true story) [RT=97%]. Susan Sarandon won Best Actress Oscar. Sean Penn is also excellent. “A powerful, thought-provoking film that covers different angles of its topic without resorting to preaching, Dead Man Walking will cause the viewer to reflect regardless of their political viewpoint.”

Clay F

+1 for "Our Friend" (2019). I forgot about that movie. I liked it.

Clay F

Suggested candidates for a Susan Sarandon poll: 1. "THELMA & LOUISE" (1991). Susan Sarandon nominated for Best Actress Oscar. Other Oscar noms = Ridley Scott (Best Director), Geena Davis (Best Actress), and Best Cinematography. Callie Khouri (female) won Best Writing Oscar. 2. “DEAD MAN WALKING” (1995) [RT=97%]. Susan Sarandon won Best Actress Oscar. Sean Penn is also excellent. Based on true story. Awesome thought-provoking movie. 3. “Lorenzo’s Oil” (1992) [RT=93%]. Susan Sarandon nom for Best Actress Oscar. Nick Nolte. Based on true story.

K, Zachary

Apparently Isabel has been watching Clerks. No but seriously I was so angry screaming at the TV today not swearing of course but fudge and freaking were used a lot. I was so mad. However this movie made us laugh and cry so thank you. This movie actually came from my collection of DVDs now it's ours. See everything is now ours. We both loved your reaction. From angry to sad. Yeah both of us cried . I am not ashamed to admit it. However the GOAT girls did it again. Thank you. My gf had to wait through the Steelers, Cubs and Fever games today. Thanks for her patience Thanks for making our day ladies.

Chris Thom

YES Dead Man Walking. Was having images of that while I was writing the post but couldn't remember what it was called. Haven't seen it in a while, but I remember it being very good.

JPDotCom23

The little girl, named Jena Malone, played the young Jodie Foster in 'Contact'

Clay F

She is good. I like her. She was good in Donnie Darko.

Chris Thom

Perfect for this channel.

Story Archer

She was also the daughter in For Love of the Game, which they loved, and Carly knows her from Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Chris Thom

Was surprised they didn't know Susan Sarandon better. I thought she was more famous than that.

Chris Thom

Hadn't heard of My Life. Is that one that follows someone through multiple ages? Like from youth thru adulthood?

YodatheHobbit

It's funny, cause she also just recognized her in Batman V Superman too.

Chris Thom

Hope you're alright, Cassie. Feel like you've been through the emotional wringer with a lot of these movies and shows lately. Went back through the schedule for the last month or two and it's kind of a lot. Even Batman v. Superman was pretty intense with a hardcore death in it. But really enjoyed revisiting this movie. Watched the full film and reaction and it was nice travelling back to '98 for a couple of hours. Carly is right, they don't make them quite the same as they used to. Good point about conflict resolution. Wishing you a happy rom-com before October. Hoping you enjoy Lost in Translation.

Chris Thom

Curious what the first DVDs were that you rented, aside from this one? We got ours kind of late in the game, but dad did the whole surround sound thing with the new device. Moulin Rouge and Hearts in Atlantis were the first I think. The sound was pretty mind-blowing at the time. Immediately hooked on the special features.

YodatheHobbit

I like it a lot now and think all the performances are great,, but I've gotta say when I was 13 and this came out I thought it was VERY manufactured. I had just lost my dad to testicular cancer about a year before, with a stepdad I was still only just starting to know and this was pretty much the equivalent of a Disney/Hallmark movie to me. With Jenna Malone being only a year younger than I, and both of us having a little brother, it was like a movie which felt to me at the time like it was mocking my life, mocking my pain with a glorified and much more loving and communicative version of my family. You get SO jealous of hollywood families sometimes when you don't feel like your own family is loving you enough, or being considerate enough to your feelings. My family didn't really express emotions while we were growing up, and we mostly still don't. When we would rent an emotional movie like this, I would always feel so uncomfortable because it always felt like I was the only one in my family affected by it. I would end up a bit bitter because no one else ever getting emotional always made it feel like I wasn't allowed to cry. When we would rent from blockbuster and then dvds from Netflix It became a routine for me to slowly walk to the bathroom as the last credits rolled without looking at anybody, look myself in the mirror above the sink, and then silently observe myself crying, dry my tears before leaving, then either get some ice cream or walk up to my room.

Paul Cox

When she finally watches Thelma & Louise, she'll never wonder where she knows Susan Sarandon from again.

JPDotCom23

I thought they watched ‘The Client’

Chris Thom

It did well in a poll fairly recently. Think it got second or third.

Chris Thom

Wow great score on Dead Man Walking. I do remember it being good, but thought the subject matter was too controversial for universal praise. I may be thinking of another movie, though. Almost certain it's about the death penalty.

Chris Thom

Don't know if you've seen it, but there's a really heartwarming vid on YouTube where the stepdad gets asked to help him walk her down the aisle at the last minute. Very sweet.

Chris Thom

Stepmom does pair amazingly with Commando. Most people don't know that.

Jenny_M

Great question! I'm pretty sure that Babe was one of the early ones we rented, as well as Austin Powers... so a mix of genres for sure!

Cole Jennett

I will die on this hill. The 90’s were the best decade for movies

Chris Thom

Fascinating career for sure. Half of me is still puzzled by it, and the other half thinks it makes perfect emotional sense. Modernity is a trip.

Cole Jennett

I think Cassie just couldn’t come up with Bull Durham on the spot

Cole Jennett

I remember when I got my first DVD player, it was the same weekend that The Sixth Sense was released. Coincidentally, that was the first reaction I ever saw of Popcorn in Bed.

Chris Thom

It has such a solid premise and theme, but there's definitely something extra about it that doesn't quite work. Sentiment is good, but there's got to be some limits so the audience doesn't overdose. This one may've gotten a little close at the end, but still think it worked.

Cole Jennett

I don’t want to provide spoilers, I’d just say to look up the trailer sometime

Stick Figure Studios

I'll echo Gole's sentiment to watch the trailer. It sets up pretty clearly what the movie is about.

Chris Thom

It was pretty great. Love the look of them. The aesthetics. They're clear enough, but it's like a nice print of film that still has a bit of a dreamy quality to it. They look kind of classy, not like a doc or a soap opera.

Chris Thom

We really were late then. Smallish TV, VHS player. Than literally overnight dad decided were a giant TV, surround sound, DVD player family. Which made sense, because all four of us were pretty obsessed with movies. But for a long time I guess the thinking was that the theater was where the real capital M Movie experience happened, and home was...not.

Chris Thom

I really trust Joanna Mason for some reason. If she's in it I'll probably see it.

Chris Thom

Nicole Kidman?! I thought To Die For was her first Hollywood thing. Would be so wild to see a vid like that talking directly to you. Surreal.

Clarence Newman

Cole. The judges have declared a photo finish between the 90s and the 60s, which is also pregnant with a raft of doozies. Of course, Cassie has a deep and debilitating phobia about 60s movies so we never get to see any, but I still live in hope.

fire12wife

Going to look now...thanks!

Clarence Newman

Stepdads rule. My biological father wasn't worth the skin he was wrapped up in, but I've always been grateful that he stepped out just in time for my "real" dad to come along. He taught me that a big, strong man (he was 6'6" and 210 pounds of solid muscle) didn't have to prove it every day by parenting with his fists.

Joe J

The 70s and 80s ain't shabby either...from what I've heard.

Joe J

Thelma & Louise is what everyone wants a reaction to. Her and Carly could drool over a shirtless Brad, but maybe they've just grown out of that sort of thing. 😉

Clarence Newman

Yeah, Cassie is too old for all that. Jon Snow and Robb Stark are not affecting her at all.

Joe J

I still have two working VHS players...and boatload of tapes. Be a sad day when the players finally go belly-up.😢

Cole Jennett

To Die For? She must have done a dozen movies in American before that

Clay F

She referred to Jon Snow and Robb Stark as Ned's "beautiful boys." Only been 3 years since their Legends of the Fall reaction in which they doted over Brad Pitt. Not sure that enough time for them to grow out of it. In the thumbnail text description of Legends of the Fall reaction, she said: "Sorry about the gasping every time Brad Pitt enters the screen." Thelma & Louise (1991) "Driven by ride-or-die chemistry between Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon while director Ridley Scott provides scorching visuals fit for a postcard ... a feminist adventure that's ... provocative and rollicking." The movie did help change society. Same time as Clarence Thomas hearings. Before 1991 different than after 1991. At the chemical plant I worked at, all Playboy Playmate calendars came down in 1991. Younger adults don't really fathom how it was before 1991. I don't want to overplay it b/c the evolution is gradual but there was a step change in 1991.

Clay F

Chris -- I won't comment on content (other than below) of Dead Man Walking (1995), so to avoid spoilers, but one of my favorite movies all time. Done really well, effective. Tim Robbins nom Best Director Oscar. "A powerful, thought-provoking film that covers different angles of its topic without resorting to preaching, Dead Man Walking will cause the viewer to reflect regardless of their political viewpoint." Susan Sarandon's Best Actress Oscar well deserved. Sean Penn (nominated for Best Actor Oscar) did incredible -- completely transformed himself into character (as he's known to do) -- so believable.

fire12wife

Stepparents don't get enough credit! My bio dad also remarried, and my stepmother is the only reason we even have a relationship with him now. We would have left him a long time ago! My stepmother was more of a mother to me than my actual mother ever was! Such a huge part of what makes me who I am is because of my stepparents! So blessed!!!

Chris Thom

Ohhh yeah I know exactly which one it is. In the past I think I was kind of mind-melding it with The United States of Leland (2003). But I remember now.

Bekka NoyB

Re-watched this a few years back, with GF & mom, for first time since I was little. As a cancer survivor, it hit a little harder this time round. Not a dry eye in the house by the end.

Cole Jennett

My Life is the hardest one for me

kaiielle

I meant to watch along to this movie much sooner, but I have been so busy. Happy to finally carve some time to do so. I first saw this movie when I was around 11-12 years old and enjoyed it. I think I've only watched it a couple times since and it's been so long since I have. This story definitely hits harder as an adult, where you can see and understand all perspectives. As a kid, I was annoyed with Anna and Jacquie's behaviour towards Isabel. But it's because I had lived through divorce and my mom was living out of the country, so anyone that my Dad would date had a pretty immediate welcome from both my brother and I when he was ready to introduce her to us. Being older, I definitely don't fault either of them for being upset the way they were. The relationships ended happy. And if it makes you and Carly feel a bit better about the Anna confronts Brad scene, the actor portraying the guy with the bike that Isabel got to be there for Anna.. remember that Isabel said he would be a high-schooler. The actor cast was 16 years old and Jena Malone (actress for Anna) was 14 years old. Great reaction with so many emotions. Thanks for watching this!
