Harrison

Looking forward to this one!

Steven Spielberg took on this project from Stanley Kubrick, who had bought the rights to a short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” by Brian Aldiss in the 1970s. About six months before the movie was released, Warner Bros and Microsoft launched an online murder mystery (one of the first alternate reality games) set in the A.I. universe that expanded on somethings briefly touched on in the movie. Martin became an architect of sentient homes. The Flesh Faire became the breeding ground of a robot rebellion, which led to the destruction of the weather satellites and the planetary ice age. The ongoing question is are the beings that woke David up at the end actually aliens or advanced versions of the robots humanity created and sent to other planets. Also, the mystery had a truly messed up, crazy version of Teddy.

Loved you reaction Cassie and have always loved he movie. Oddly fascinating, and touching as how many of us would not want to spend one more day with their mother after she has passed on, I know I would.

Chris Thom

Fascinating movie. So strange but weirdly beautiful.

Louis Chapman

I haven't seen this as an adult. I forgot how deep this film was.

Stan the Man

Everyone thinks they are Aliens at the end. They are the evolved Mecha/Oraga. So a human robot hybrid. Not aliens. This movie is so darn good. John Williams just knocking it out the park. The cinematography is glorious. I’ve always wondered how different the Kubrick version would be. Definitely more ambiguous. I imagine the end we would have zero explanation for how the future beings brought back Monica and it would be more like 2001. Jude Law should’ve been nominated for an Oscar for this movie.

We loved your reaction to this movie by the way. However I have to comment on your Instagram post. So I had to send this to my friends. We worked construction right out of HS built a $460,000 house At least I was thoroughly impressed with the construction on this. We did this at our garage we just added a remote so you can push a button a door opens a secret room that's full of power tools. Whoever did your construction work is good. I am talking about the door and getting the room exactly right to hold all those DVD/ Blue Ray. I am getting text back now. Friends are impressed. Must have been a huge project.

Chris Thom

Are Cassie, Ben and fam moving?

Chris Thom

It's quite ambitious. Love that it was released in 2001. Very fitting. This was essentially my intro to sci fi at fifteen and it's been hard to beat.

Chris Thom

Was Brian Aldiss the one that wrote Blade Runner?

Melissa Stuart

That was Philip K Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

Chris Thom

Ohhh that's right. Not sure but I think that story was also an inspiration. Or I remember it being mentioned a lot when this came out.

Melissa Stuart

Androids came out a year before Supertoys, so Aldriss could have influenced by Dick. I’ve only read Androids. It was pretty interesting.

K, Zachary

I really wouldn't know, and we have gotten enough trouble on this forum. That we would really not want to know, these things. Its better that way. Some things you can't unlearn or take back unfortunately. We have a bunch of learning lessons on here and prefer to keep things nice, kind respectful and fun. They built a secret room that you push on the end of the door which looks like a wall to open a ton of DVD/Blue Rays in Alphabetical order. Which is impressive. A huge massive project to put all the movies in one place. The door which I couldn't tell how big it was. It's a lot of attention to detail. Lots of measurements and knowing how much space you need. A massive project.

John

Passable but too long, I don't know why Hollywood thinks every movie should be 3 hrs long, most simply do not have that much competent story.

Stan the Man

“It’s none of our business”. Me thinks you doth protest too much Why is that none of our business? She has an address on her YouTube page. People send her packages.A simple “I don’t know” would probably suffice. You mentioned construction and following her on social media so I think someone was just innocently asking you as a curiosity.

Happy Hanukkah

Chris, basing myself exclusively on explicit statements by Cassie, they moved into a new house relatively recently.

K, Zachary

i were complimenting on the construction work for her movie closet. Yes I could have handled it differently, that's my mistake. I was just exhausted and wasn't thinking clearly. You were right for pointing that out Did you know that Stan The Man Musial was a baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals started in 1941 if memory serves played until 1963. First ballot Hall Of Famer. He passed away not to long ago. When my friends and I get into discussions about the best consistent hitters of all time. His name always comes up.

K, Zachary

Lol I love it. When you are a movie person like her and you get a ton of movies and you just need to go pick one out to watch. It makes it so much easier. Your right it is a closet a very sweet one at that. We were impressed by the actual number movies she had and the generosity of other people to give her those movies.

Happy Hanukkah

Back in the beginning of 2022, I sent her 8 of these DVD storage bags/cases as an ad-hoc solution https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VTXZRR * so I'm happy to see this elegant permanent installation. I'd estimate that the closet's contents are a mere curated fraction of what she has received. If all streaming services suddenly ended, I think Cassie has enough discs to last her the rest of her life! :-) (And I am sure that generosity of these people, in movies and especially other items, helps this whole reaction thing be more than a mere job for Cassie.) * Hey! The price has since gone down! Take that, inflation! :-)

The early question "Can we get a human to love them back?" is so funny because humans love *anything*. We are the species that names our pets, cars, homes. I've encountered people who were genuinely sad when a pair of shoes wore out because they loved their shoes. And today one worry is that some individuals may be falling in love with AI chat software. People would 100% love an AI robot that seemed just a little bit human. It's not a a very high bar to set.

James M

Stan "none of our business" is as you know a polite way of saying "none of your business". Probing the lives of people who are in the public like this is rude.

Rlbkuma

This movie is a blend of 2 different visions of 2 different directors. Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick (director of your favorite horror movie, The Shining) Kubrick hired many actors and drew storyboards and concept art (specifically he oversaw Robin Williams' Dr. Know recording) but once he knew he was dying, which very few people knew he was, he gave the project to Spielberg, along with the script treatments and concept art. Spielberg was blamed for the ending which critics hated (its never specified the "aliens" are super advanced robots that were most likely created by other robots, and felt the last day with the mom was too sappy) however it was later proven that was the ending Kubrick wanted and originally approved of

Gro Do

Most critics are depressed nihilists. They wanted him to sit under the ocean looking at the statue forever because they have depressing lives and dont like seeing positive symbolism

Rlbkuma

Seriously. And besides, it's not exactly a happy ending anyway since he only gets one day with his mom, one day where he's treated like a real child, then its confirmed by John Williams and Spielberg that he deactivates after his mom goes to sleep. That's a pretty bittersweet ending

Stan the Man

lol “probing the lives of those in the public is rude”. I’m not sure what to say to that. I mean, you’re wrong. It’s not rude. I don’t think that’s the kind of place Cassie wants this to be. The gentleman who wrote the original “none of our business” has kindly admitted he could have handled his reply differently. I think if Cassie was concerned about any of this she wouldn’t be sharing an address to send her mail on YouTube. It would be one thing if someone asks for an exact address. But asking if she’s moved is no more or less rude than asking if she’s feels better from being sick

Happy Hanukkah

I believe everybody has now made their point. Could we please move on without insisting on the last word or descending into a fruitless debate? So, what's this I hear about the Habs signing Sydney Sweeney?

Chris Thom

I thought he meant she was sharing pics of her new home being constructed on Instagram. Guess I was just mostly curious if she would be moving the setup/location for filming. Change makes me nervous. lol

Dean Holt

Just gave the YouTube edit a watch and it still feels like a bit of a mess of a movie, also found it a bit weird in places. So I still think it’s one of the worst movies he’s directed.

Chris Thom

Thank you for reacting to this. I know it's an odd film, and it can be difficult to decipher the thoughts and feelings toward it. 52k isn't a TON of views after four days, but the discussions under it have been fascinating and engaging. Almost a thousand comments already. Vast majority who commented are grateful to have it appear on the channel and have you give it a shot.
