Here are post 1970, more modern Christmas movies I have not seen (see the ** on two options)

I LOVE CHRISTMAS TIME!!

ps-I am already planning on watching a couple cutie Rankin Bass and A Christmas Carol (1984)

Poll will end Thursday and multiple votes allowed!

Comments

Andrew R

Bad Santa must've accidentally been left off the poll 😔

Cole Jennett

So glad you included Gremlins!

TopGun2

Which version of Miracle on 34th street? There are 3 I think!

Daniel J Fort

Bad Santa 1 and 2 Violent Night 1

Matt Dellarosa

Doesn't look like Christmas with the Kranks will win but I recommend watching it anyway. You would love it Cassie. You will hate Bad Santa, guaranteed. Lol

Henry Graham

My traditional Christmas viewing, Eyes Wide Shut, is conspicuous by its absence.

MGCR

I'll watch pretty well any of them except Christmas With the Kranks. But my vote is with Joyeux Noel.

Cole Jennett

She did the original on the channel a few years back

Matt Dellarosa

I couldn't do that to her. It would ruin her Christmas, lol

LukeG84

Cassie clearly didn’t see my comment about Mixed Nuts (1994) in the classic poll. No matter. It wouldn’t have beaten 90s Miracle on 34th Street, which I’m hoping will win.

Dan M

It ain’t Christmas without Gizmo, Stripe, and that ridiculously catchy theme.

WestBound

Modern ...but the oldest movie is winning lol shocker

Clarence Newman

Posted 2 minutes ago and Gremlins has already landed the knockout blow. The Attenborough Miracle on 34th Street would be fun, though. Cassie's already seen the black and white version.

Larry Darrell

Can we just have another Classic Christmas Poll. ;-)

JohnnyUtah

Christmas with the kranks is my 2nd favorite Christmas comedy next to Vacation! We all know Gremlins is a classic as well!

Matt Rose

Oh hell yes, THE REF. Still one of the funniest black comedies ever.

Nick Ireland

Sweet baby Jesus please not the Kranks

Dan M

Every other entry on the poll is seeing that…Bright light! Bright light!

Mark Deadman

I would add Bad Santa to the list. 🤣

Stick Figure Studios

Well this is a no-brainer. There are of course some good movies on here, but it has to be GREMLINS. I didn't realize that this was even an option because you'd seen it before, but since it was so long ago, you probably don't remember anything about it. This is a must-see. Also, since they just announced they are doing a third one, the timing is perfect. You can watch The first one this holiday season, watch the sequel sometime next year and then watch the third one when it comes out. I am so pleased. Still, If it ends up being the MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET remake, I'd be fine with that too.

Larry Darrell

It seems most will agree with your sentiment.

John Neiberger

It's too bad that Joyeux Noel isn't going to win because it's an amazing movie. I think it's low vote count is just a result of few people having seen it.

Shehab Dawoud

Bad Santa barely lost a poll last year. Why is it not here?

Dan M

And a chance to see Phoebe Cates! 😍

Rogue_ML

it won't win, but I'm happy to see this many votes for 'The Ref'.. great comedy..

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Fun Fact about Gremlins (1984): Actor Jonathan Banks who plays Mike from Breaking Bad appears in Gremlins (1984) as one of the two police officers. Also for The Wire fans; Actor Glynn Turman who plays Mayor Royce in The Wire, appears in Gremlins as the science teacher, Mr Hansen.

Popcorn In Bed

i love both of those-i’ve seen them so much though!

Stick Figure Studios

I voted for GREMLINS. I already watch it every year, so this year I can watch it with Cassie... Although I also love the MIRACLE remake. Richard Attenborough was actually my favorite on-screen Santa.

Javier Hernandez

Red One is a hoot. And if you don't well up at the end I'll assume that you don't have a soul.

Larry Darrell

Could a film be any more of a Ringer in a poll.

Jake McNulty

I'm going with "Prancer", "Joyeux Noel", "Gremlins" and "Miracle on 34th Street" on this one. P.S. If I might be so bold Cassie, may I suggest including "The Snowman" (1982) and "Arthur Christmas" (2011) in next year's poll?

Clarence Newman

And may I just point out that despite getting two polls containing 21 films both "Classic" and "Modern".......YET AGAIN, the 1960s have been completely ignored. I'm beginning to think that the entire decade has somehow made it onto Cassie's Nope list.

TopGun2

That's my favourite! 😁

Richard Maurer

It’s not that scary as an adult, you’ll be fine.

Larry Darrell

You forgot about The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996). Same writer as Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Same director as Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger. There’s a whole lot of Christmas and Snow in these 4 films. A whole lot more can be found in The Long Kiss Goodnight.

shaneth138

You gotta do Violent Night or Bad Santa.

Brent Petty

Post-1970 is modern? That's going to upset some people. Not me, though. :)

Jake McNulty

"Gremlins" is one of my votes too, though to be honest I'm only voting for it so that we can one day get a reaction to "Gremlins 2: The New Batch".

Stick Figure Studios

More fun trivia. Producer Steven Spielberg makes a cameo appearance briefly in one shot (Joe Dante films tend to have a lot of cameos, In jokes, references and sight gags in the background or in the margins). The father is played by Hoyt Axton who not only played the father in BLACK STALLION, but was a great singer-songwriter responsible for many classic tunes including "Joy to the World" by Three dog night. The mother is played by Francis Lee McCain who was also in BACK TO THE FUTURE and REAL LIFE. The old Chinese guy is Keye Luke, known for playing the number one son in a series of Charlie Chan films and then eventually voiced Charlie Chan in an animated TV series.

LukeG84

I HATE Gremlins. Please tell me the majority of this community aren’t going to vote for that rubbish movie, especially when 90s Miracle on 34th Street is in the same poll? 😩

Irby

Where's the greatest Xmas movie of all Die Hard 😆 🤣

Robert Baldino

The Ref is actually really good, but could be seen by some as a bit problematic these days... Gremlins is, of course, a classic, but I don't really think of it as a Christmas movie (plus, she's already seen it). Out of everything here, Joyeux Noel is probably the most meaningful film, so it gets my vote.

Stick Figure Studios

Absolutely, Mark. Everyone's going to tune in to see Cassie's adoring reactions to the cuteness of Gizmo as well as her horror at the mayhem of the fight in the... well, you know what scene I'm talking about. I don't need to be specific.

Alexis Vorian

Have you watched Santa Claus (1985) with Dudley Moore?

Erik Locquiao

Should throw Violent Night in there, that was a fun one.

Stick Figure Studios

It ain't Christmas until Mrs. *REDACTED* goes *REDACTED* out of the *REDACTED* on her *REDACTED*

Katie Jackson

Mine too. I remember getting my picture taken with a Santa that looked just like him. I was 15 and it was the only way to get my 5 year old sister to sit on Santa's lap😂

JarHead0351

"The Ref" is good fun movie that always gets overlooked as a Christmas movie.

Stick Figure Studios

Although not as much of her as you would see in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. *rimshot*

Brian's Dog

Gremlins took off like Usain Bolt.

Justin S.

I definitely recommend The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996). Samuel L. Jackson has said that it was one of his favorite roles.

Gray

Looking like a stomp already

Dean Holt

Might’ve been best just to have picked Gremlins as it should have an easy win. Btw not disappointed as I normally watch it every year anyway. Not sure if I’ve watched that version of Christmas Carol but the best version imo is the one from 1951 staring the great Alastair Sim. It was the one that was always on the tv at Christmas when I was growing up. The Miracle on 34th Street remake I think is better than the original. As Richard Attenborough just incredible and I think you’ll love it.

Duke Pootentooter

Cassie's very favorite genre "Christmas horror" has enough entries to warrant a separate poll. Black Christmas Krampus Silent Night, Deadly Night Violent Night Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale Anna and the Apocalypse etc.

Tyler Foster

I need The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) on a Christmas poll!

Stick Figure Studios

I actually saw that in the theater. Garish and kitcshy as it may be, I like that movie.

Larry Darrell

I really thought this was going to be a for sure this year. It’s been in past polls, she watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang last year and Cliffhanger this year. 🤷‍♂️

Chris Tucker

I've not seen most of these ... only saw Gremlins which I thought was just so-so.

Elliot Nesterman

Which "Miracle on 34th Street," the original or the remake. If you've only seen the remake then watch the original.

Stick Figure Studios

I believe when Warren mentions SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE, he's referring to a different film from THE SANTA CLAUSE. The latter is, of course, the Disney one with Tim Allen, but the former is a 1980s movie with Dudley Moore and John Lithgow produced by the Salkinda who also did the Superman movies with Christopher Reeve. I Saw it in the theater and despite it being pretty garish and kitcshy, I've always liked it.

Stick Figure Studios

I'd love to see a reaction to the sequel, Jake. In some ways it's an even more subversive and ambitious film than the original (although I still prefer the first one as it is a bit more earnest and scary, whereas the sequel just leans into the self-aware comedy). Eventually maybe we can get a reaction to the third one when it comes out.

Biggman83

I’d love to see Black Christmas 1974 on the watch list!

Patrick

✅ 8 Seconds (1994) 🐂 Since this week is National Finals Rodeo week...🎄🎁

Chris Thom

Gremlins is such a fun Christmas movie. Kind of a classic. Produced and helped along by Steven Spielberg. Not sure if you've seen Four Christmases but that is also pretty hilarious.

David Patterson

The remake. There a reaction to the original on her channel.

Andrew R

I don't get it. Everyone has her watching Saving Private Ryan, The Fly, Final Destination, & Halloween but all of a sudden a rated R Christmas comedy, that is quite funny, and actually does have heartfelt moments is off limits? If that's the way it is then that's the way it is. I think the reputation has grown a life of its own though.

Larry Darrell

You’re not thinking of Kevin Spacey are you?

Chris Thom

It's on the channel already.

Chris Thom

Aww come on. It's super fun and creative. Actually has a good Christmas message to it too, just presented in an unusual way.

Chris Thom

She mentioned the other day that she thought it would win outright, and I guess she didn't want to watch it this year.

Chris Thom

She left it off intentionally.

Old As Dirt Bert

Millions would make an interesting Christmas extra film, though you'd need to be aware of the potential disruption conversion to Euros might cause.

Chris Thom

Ohhh you're right, that would've been perfect. GREAT film. Danny Boyle directed.

Chris Thom

I'm finally going to watch that year. Been so many years of passing by it on cable.

My_Cousin_Mose

At this point in my life the only thing that could make me finally watch Gremlins is Cassie.

Garrett Wilson

Gremlins was also a better "Snow White" movie than the lastest remake.

Shehab Dawoud

Add Game of Thrones to that list. People are fine with her watching that, where there seems to be a sex scene every episode, sometimes involving family members. The same people don't want Eyes Wide Shut on here, which pales in comparison on that front.

Mike Lemon

No, a majority won't vote for it. Nothing ever gets a majority. Maverick might have been the only thing to win a majority.

Shehab Dawoud

Yeah, that means it's never coming close again.

Andrew Mote

Not a lot of great options here. Gremlins is gonna clean up.

Chris Thom

Would hope she might show The Snowman to the family sooner than later. It's beautiful.

Dan M

lol…the 80s version of The Wicked Witch of the East.

Stick Figure Studios

I'd love to see a reaction to that, but I suspect it'll probably be a while.

Stick Figure Studios

The 1951 film with Alastair Sim is generally considered the definitive cinematic version of the Dickens story.

Choof

IMO Gremlins is far superior to every other movie here. An amazing script, great direction, top notch puppetry and animatronics and a fantastic score. Fun fact for recent PIB, its written by Chris Columbus who also wrote and directed nine months which Cassie just watched

Stick Figure Studios

@Chris: it is just so incredibly clever and imaginative and hilarious and dark and fun. It's such a strange little movie that it really shouldn't work, and yet somehow it does. Brilliantly. Only in the '80s could a film as odd and creative as GREMLINS be successful.

colbyshannon

Just watched Christmas With The Kranks for the first time last night, and…… it is a truly HORRIBLE movie. …didn't laugh once (and I have a relatively generous sense of humor). The script, in particular, is trash. The basic premise is so ridiculously flimsy and contrived, it felt like a 'vomit draft' that got a hasty green rubber stamp. …almost every line in the flick felt superficial and forced. Almost every character—if not all—comes across as unserious, silly and shallow. I would knock the acting as well—but when the material is this bad even the best actors can't razzle dazzle it into something respectable. —We all know that Tim Allen, Jaime Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd are way…WAY better than this. This was clearly just a paycheck project for these stars, and—cynically—that's probably the raison d'être for the entire movie. …just another cheap, exploitative footnote of holiday genre slop that has become all too common in this *modern* era of so-called Christmas movies. So…… My advice (in case your wondering…lol): SKIP—with no hesitation.

Michael Weiner

The remake of Miracle on 34th Street is unnecessary.

Stick Figure Studios

She even has her own twisted little musical theme that accompanies her when she shows up on screen. Also, Polly Holiday just passed away a couple months ago. This could be a great way to honor her. RIP.

Dan M

Really don’t understand why you consider this movie rubbish. Is it a masterpiece? No. But it’s got 2 of the cutest characters ever in a movie…one Mogwai and one Phoebe.

Above Average Dave

Even though it was a made for TV movie, I think THE HOMECOMING is one of the better "modern" Christmas movies. Perhaps for next year's list.

David Collins

Disappointing that Violent Christmas isn't an option.

Jake McNulty

+1 for "Black Christmas" (1974)

mikethemotormouth

Very glad to see Gremlins doing well. It opens the door for #2: The New Batch which was way more fun

JAKH

do you mean "Violent Night" (2022) starring David Harbour?

Stick Figure Studios

I haven't even seen the remake and I can confidently agree with that.

Stick Figure Studios

It's comments like this that affirm all the more for me that Cassie is really doing a lot of good in the world.

JAKH

"Violent Night" is most definitely _not_ horror. Acton/comedy - yes, horror - no.

Aaron G

Cassie I'm pretty sure you already reacted to MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET like two years ago.

Larry Darrell

+1 for Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971). The Christmas film that gave us The Waltons year round.

Larry Darrell

The moment she typed the word “Gremlins” into the poll, it was over. No competition.

Larry Darrell

If we say Pretty Pretty Please, you think it might help. :-)

Chris Thom

There was a remake in the 90's.

Mauro Lepe

Would family man be considered a Christmas movie? Love that movie

Bill W

Luke, childhood nostalgia is consistently a deciding factor in almost every reaction community. I'm not crazy about it either, but I've learned to expect it.

Bill W

She said she's doing 2 Rankin-Bass movies.

Just Plain Bob

She’s seen it and I’m pretty sure she said that she’s seen it several times, so presumably it wouldn’t even be eligible for a rewatch.

LukeG84

I agree Bill. But my childhood nostalgia is Miracle on 34th Street.

Cole Jennett

She watched it a couple years ago on the channel. It is pretty great, isn’t it?

Chris Thom

As a Millennial, that's pretty much how I view film history.

Justin Frey

Where’s Bad Santa? 🎅🏻

Ryan Mitchell

Bad Santa should be added to this poll. The funniest Christmas movie.

Catherine LW

No, she reacted to the older one with Maureen O’Hara.

David Collins

Yes, Violent Night - brain fart there.

To Wa

Happly voted for Gremlins since the "1941" and "Eyes Wide Shut" buttons were hidden .

Andrea Sandor

Also Frank Capra's "Meet John Doe" - considered Christmas time movie. 1941

YodatheHobbit

Man, Gremlins is insanely overrated. I think I saw it when I was like 4 and I was scared of them then. Last year finally rewatched it age 40, and I thought it was too silly with too cheesy of acting performances. I honestly thought I'd enjoy it and I didn't and it bummed me out.

Bill W

Yeah. It's overrated.

YodatheHobbit

People give too much high horse value to scripts, rather than other aspects of movies equally as valued by audiences. NO. That film's a new modern classic comedy comparable with Christmas Vacation. Goofy and silly and JUST AS ILLOGICAL. Films can't be trash because they can't harm you. They have no agenda against you. There's no reason to go out of your way to be rude to it just for existing. Trash is also just SUCH an overused metaphor for media. That and "dumpster fire". People need to get out of this endless clone mind loop and rediscover the ability for originality.

GM

And for New Year's Eve......Four Rooms (1995)

Andrea Sandor

Oh sorry - Modern... wish "Fred Claus" was listed

bd

The people need In Bruges on this list!!

Stephen Dias

Alas, "Joyeux Noel" is not even in the top five; it's a great movie!

Walter

Wow, Gremlins is running away with it. I mean, I liked it when I was 11. Not really the kind of Christmas movie I imagine Cassie is looking for, but hey

Cathleen Jennings

It almost won last year. Any chance she already plans on watching it so it doesn't need to be on a poll?

Cathleen Jennings

Gutted that Prancer isn't going to win. Cassie would LOVE it and the movie deserves the attention, too.

Larry Darrell

No, it’s this Christmas. 2025 ;-)

Jim K

This should definitely be a movie she should watch. Not necessarily for Christmas but watch none the less.

Michael Bachman

Metropolitan, released in 1990, should be on the list.

Richard Maurer

True. But when a ringer finally goes in my favor I have to roll with it.

Bryan Fritchie

I would have guessed you were a Miracle on 34th Street every year kind of person. LOL

MikeLL

I think watching the runner up on that poll, The Bishop's Wife, would make most of us Classic lovers happy. I know I spoke against TBW yesterday, but I really wouldn't mind a watch of that one, and it would make a lot of people happy.

Richard Maurer

Well, it would have been destroyed by Gremlins like everything else in this poll so maybe it’s better that it wasn’t. Maybe next year.

MikeLL

Stick, 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Clay F

She is avoiding it.

Bill W

Definitely overrated.

Larry Darrell

Really hoping there’s at least 2 Classic films. There’s way more of them that people want to watch than there are of the newer ones. I think most of the comments reflect that, not just mine. One Classic film a year at this point is not enough.

Bill W

He criticized a movie. Don't take it as a personal attack just because you happen to like it. If it's a movie and can't harm him, then he can't harm IT either.

Clay F

3 years ago. December 2022.

Clay F

I voted: --The Ref (1994) --Joyeux Noël (2005).

Rose Cullenward

One Magic Christmas is an underrated gem which I know Cassie (and Carly) would enjoy.

Stick Figure Studios

I love that movie. Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton are great.

Dan

Red One is hilarious - but I don't think too many would like it.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, in some ways the sequel is even more ambitious and subversive than the first one. I still prefer the original for its novelty and it slightly more earnest and scary tone (because the sequel really just leans into the comedy), but the second one is still great

Stick Figure Studios

And yet it's still a charming and wonderful film with my pick for the greatest Santa ever put on screen.

Chris Thom

I remember it getting panned by critics when first released. Not sure if it ever had a resurgence or not over the years.

Chris Thom

That score was really good. Haven't seen it in maybe twelve years or so, but I remember the music being solid. Great cast too.

Andrea Sandor

Agreed - Although the climax of the movie - happens at Christmas time and the last scenes has the banker standing near his Christmas tree listening to children carolers outside and looking regretful at what he had done and joins others to find John Doe.

Stick Figure Studios

@Dan: Oftetimes I have noticed when someone is praising / criticizing a movie, they're not necessarily doing so based on the merits of the movie itself, but on how much they perceive it to be praised or criticized in general by everyone else. Someone may not think GREMLINS Is anything terribly special, but the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth it receives or its status as a classic can tend to make some people be overly negative as a counterbalance. Hence the "overrated" critique

Stick Figure Studios

Born in '76, so I pretty much consider everything post-70 as modern.

Chris Thom

Going to do my yearly EWS watch this week. Classic.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, it's one of Jerry Goldsmith's best IMO. Both Gizmo's theme and the Gremlins Rag are iconic.

Brent Petty

I was born in '79. I was referring to someone who replied to my post under the other Christmas Poll. They took issue with me listing Gremlins as modern.

Larry Darrell

Good point. The only film I’m voting for is The Ref, and I’m completely fine with Gremlins. I’ve had the 4K Blu-ray for a year now and still haven’t cracked it open. You’re right, it isn’t often that a Ringer goes our way.

Brent Petty

FatMan for next year, then.

Bill W

Yeah, probably why it's not on this year's poll. Cassie was probably like "Whoa, that was a little TOO close!" 🤣

Richard Maurer

Wow, this has to be one of the quickest times that a poll has ever been over

Todzilla

Agree. I've been recommending FatMan to Cassie every year because I know she likes Mel Gibson.

Brent Petty

Oooh! Just hit me that the 1984 A Christmas Carol is the George C Scott version. My favorite!

Richard Maurer

As someone who actively dislikes the syrupy Spielberg/Spielberg wannabe kids movies of the eighties - this film is not that, and I really enjoy this film. The sequel’s not bad either, and gets bonus points for having Christopher Lee in the cast.

Richard Maurer

JAKH - It’s pretty gory and obviously violent. If Scream can be seriously called a horror movie by some then I will give Violent Night a horror pass.

Clay F

That's what I was thinking.

Chris Thom

Honestly didn't realize it was the Forest Gump of Christmas movies.

Stick Figure Studios

It's a very good version (particularly for a TV movie). More faithful to the story than most as it includes elements typically left out of adaptations (like ignorance and want) and Scott plays Scrooge with more restraint than actors typically do. Scrooge is often portrayed in such a broad, almost cartoony way. Scott really makes him believable.

Larry Darrell

Christmas is also incorporated into his first speech. The Spirit of Christmas is basically the basis for the whole Movement. Meet John Doe is a film I absolutely watch every year at Christmas time, but correct in saying that it could be watched any time of the year. That’s also kind of a point in the film. What if you acted like it’s Christmas all year?

Stick Figure Studios

Also: The man in the tavern sitting next to Billy complimenting his drawing is the great Looney Tunes animator Chuck Jones (Billy even calls him "Mr. Jones").

Richard Maurer

Except there’s not even a movie that’s even somewhat close to Gremlins.

Dan

Looks like Gremlins is the clear favorite. Quick warning to parents with little kids. There is a line in Gremlins where a teenage girl talks about when she stopped believing in Santa.

Stick Figure Studios

Arguably the most notorious and controversial scene from the film (the other contender of course being the one in the kitchen). Such a fantastic scene, though, and such a fantastic performance by Phoebe Cates.

David Collins

Gremlins is a must watch, for sure, but it's viable all year long. It's unfortunate that here it is hogging up a Christmas movie slot. But it'll be fun, none the less.

CJ Holden

Even Spielberg wanted that scene cut, but to his credit, he told Joe Dante: "Hey, it's your movie. Do what you think is right."

CJ Holden

I enjoyed RED ONE a lot and my sister downright loved it. It really had the bad luck of coming out in a time when we would get every year a dozen of gimmicky christmas action movies and the public was getting sick of Dwayne Johnson. 10 or maybe just five years earlier and it would've been an instant christmas classic.

Chris Thom

Might be nice to throw The Best Christmas Pageant Ever some votes, if only because Cassie is a big fan of the book and was excited to see it last year (but apparently never did).

Chris Thom

Been surprised how influential that movie really was in horror. I didn't see it until 2012 or so, but elements from really have carried over through the years.

Macabre Movie Maniac

Very young in 2005? You're even younger than I thought. I'd guess you were born in 1990.

Richard Maurer

That scene and the kitchen scene are two things that make this movie stand out among the usual Spielberg/Spielburg wannabe kids movies of the 80’s.

Richard Maurer

Right now it has 280 votes over its nearest competitor. Seems that a decent majority of patrons think it’s a suitable Christmas movie.

My_Cousin_Mose

I'll give a shot and see. And Christopher Lee gives anything he's in a few bonus points.

Astraeos

I'm deeply proud of everyone for the unanimous choice of Gremlins lol. Lets keep that same energy up and get Cassie to watch Gremlins 2 as well!

Richard Maurer

Unanimous is bit strong, overwhelming majority would be a more accurate statement. But seeing how these overwhelming wins usually go against me, I share in your enthusiasm for this one.

Richard Maurer

Are you saying Cassie looks older than she is? You just made her day /s. ;-)

Macabre Movie Maniac

Things she has said made it seem like she was born in the late 80s but she's younger than that I think. I'm 43, but Cassie looks like 34, 35ish.

Larry Darrell

I hope she knows that she can watch films on her own. Especially all of these Christmas films from both polls. Even more especially the films that get very few votes. At the rate that she watches Christmas films, if she’s holding out on any, waiting to only watch them for a reaction, then it’s going to take years and many many Christmases without enjoying some of the best Christmas films.

Richard Maurer

I get it, but I was just kidding. Your first comment could be interpreted as you thinking she looks older than she is, which really no adult wants to hear.

colbyshannon

Joyeux Noel is the finest film on this poll……by a wide margin. But, to be fair, I'm not quite sure how one can reasonably compare movies like Gremlins and Joyeux Noel? Other than mutual seasonal appeal and setting a high bar for their respective sub-genres, they're both so wildly different. … But let's be honest… Gremlins is a 'Christmas-Adjacent' flick…not a straight up Christmas movie; whereas Joyeux Noel literally means "Merry Christmas" …and it recounts a wonderful true story of enemy soldiers putting their arms down for a Christmas eve ceasefire…rediscovering their humanity in the spirit of Christmas…in the most horrible of places. It's a lovely film…and should definitely be getting a lot more love on this poll. Hopefully, it'll get a PiB watch at some point.

Chris Thom

Oh that's what it's about. Hadn't heard of this movie. It's set in ww1 in the trenches?

Chris Thom

You mean a movie with a gremlin with leathery wings, just flying around, flip-flopping, bust through a wall, make a perfect bat symbol in the wall, get outside, get in some wet concrete, jump up on a building, and just dry in place like a gargoyle gremlin? We are cooking with gas now.

Chris Thom

Not sure if she waited for the channel or not. But on the podcast she was all gung-ho about seeing it. So not sure what happened. Can't remember if it was on a poll last year.

colbyshannon

Yes… That's right. …until, of course, they emerge from the trenches to celebrate Christmas together. …which, of course, leads to some natural 'crisis of conscious' feelings when the time comes to resume the conflict. …pretty remarkable story actually.

Chris Thom

Cute cast, cute Gizmo, Spielbergian, creative puppets, 80's charm, Christmas decorations. Should be something she can appreciate. Could be the next Big Trouble in Little China though. Who knows.

colbyshannon

Also.. Diane Kruger and Daniel Brühl play substantial roles in the picture. …both of whom are really fantastic actors.

Chris Thom

Sounds interesting. I can't even imagine how that situation would go. That's surreal. Heard about it for the first time on reaction channels for 1917.

Joe J

I believe Cassie turns 37 this year.

Macabre Movie Maniac

Then again people always put me at close to 50, because I'm bald and have a weathered face from doing manual labor my whole life lol.

Chris Thom

I know it's rude to talk about peoples age in some contexts, but I think Joe is right. It's somewhat relevant in just having a basis for what movies she grew up with and are her core memories.

Larry Darrell

Only 27 people want her to react to it. She should just watch it. I hope she does. You only have so many Christmases in this world. There’s no sense in waiting for a later one to do something you think you’ll enjoy, when you can do it for this one.

Macabre Movie Maniac

That would explain why she bolted from the theater fifteen minutes into the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. She was only 15. I was 21 and reveled every second of that flicks.

Björn Karlsson

Sabaton made song/video about it a couple of years ago. It's great 😃

Tim C

Not familiar with any except Miracle on 34th. 🙂

fire12wife

Miracle on 34th Street (1994) is my favorite Christmas movie! Even if it comes in 2nd, I hope you'll still watch it! Such a warm-hearted movie with so many sweet moments in it! I promise, you will love it! You'll watch it with your family every year!

fire12wife

The Miracle on 34th Street movie on this poll is from 1994, not 1947... and it's a fantastic movie!!!

Nolofinwe

The Ref Great movie to begin the season . Let’s all watch “pocket full of miracles” Who doesn’t love “Apple Annie” It’s like a Christmas fairytale

fire12wife

She's only seen the 1947 version! The 1994 version is what's on the poll!

Clay F

Ok, thanks fire. I was wondering about that. I started thinking it was the 1994 version.

Just Plain Bob

I came to it relatively late, as well. Probably about 2005. As a lifelong horror fan, that’s embarrassing to admit. Immediately fell in love with it.

Happy Hanukkah

"watch films on her own"?! Gasp! Heresy!

Happy Hanukkah

Splits the audience in two camps: WTF and LOL. (I shall now try getting a reservation at Dorsia.)

David Kent

Has to be Gremlins and The Ref, Is isn't Christmas without watching them.

Happy Hanukkah

Why should we be pleasing all the politician heathens Who would try to change the seasons if they could?

Bill W

You might have crossed the 'spoiler' line with those details.

Happy Hanukkah

Nakatomi Tower gets taken over by gremlins.

Happy Hanukkah

"Joy to the World" Solidifying Gremlins' status as a Christmas movie. :-P

Happy Hanukkah

One can only assume that she has already decided to watch it. :-)

Chris Thom

I was seventeen. Still think that's probably the best horror remake ever made. Saw it before the original. The Ring was pretty good too.

Chris Thom

Just for Key and Peele. Perhaps...?

Happy Hanukkah

As Lemon would say, it's the ringerest ringer that ever frickin' ringered.

Stick Figure Studios

@CJ: Yeah, Dante has said that he was told literally after he finished shooting that scene that it "will never be in the movie," but he just dug his heels in and it's become legendary. They even do a hilarious spoof of it in the sequel.

Chris Thom

That's when the remake came out. That was pretty good too. More cynical, darkly humorous take on the story. Cast was solid in that.

Macabre Movie Maniac

It is definitely the best remake ever made. Amityville Horrr I think is up there too. So is The Grudge but I've also been in love with Sarah Michelle Gellar since I was 14.

Story Archer

Gremlins? You gotta be kidding me...

Dirk-Jan (DJ)

I'm somewhat surprised this movie is so underrated. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn together in a movie is a 'must see', in my opinion... 😉

Clay F

Good description. I suggested that Joyeux Noel 2005 be in the poll, and the of course voted for it.

Clay F

Joe -- I think she is a year younger. She looks great.

Sean

I've seen Prancer along with the (quite unnecessary) remake of Miracle on 34th Street. Both were all right. From what I know of the other films on this list, the writers simply employed Christmas as a plot point without any real emotion embracing the Reason for the season.

Sean

Pocketful of Miracles is Capra's remake of his own earlier feature, Lady for a Day, starring the magnificent May Robson, released, I believe, in 1936. Both movies are marvelous although critics have generally given a deeper nod to Capra's first effort.

Sean

Soon after what was called The Great War, Pope Benedict XV begged the belligerents to observe a Christmas truce. The Kaiser was amenable; the British Prime Minister was not, primarily because the Pope requested it.

Michael

The Family Stone would be an excellent watch

Flounder

The Ref, PLEASE!!! Do it for the angry elves…

TechPriest

Without negative connotations to any of the movies on the poll itself, calling 1970+ 'modern' is wild. The first movie that was widely distributed (as in, feature length and not a tech demo) was The Jazz Singer 1927. Movies are less than 100 years old, and you set 55 years ago to be the demarcation line for 'modern'.

TechPriest

It was pretty damn camp in a bad way. Even JK Simmons and Chris Evans can't make a Dwayne Johnson movie good.

Clay F

I understand your point, but I think post 1970 is a good time frame, whether called "modern" or not. Would you be ok if the poll were simply called "Post-1970 Christmas Poll"?

fire12wife

My favorite scene is when Sammi, the little deaf girl, comes to see Santa. The girl is deaf in real life, and that was her actual mother. Neither of them knew that Santa would speak to her in sign language, so their reactions were genuine! Such a heartwarming scene!

Clarence Newman

Also, splitting the history of cinema at 1970 gives a balance to the polls - 50 years before (movies are about 125 years old, though for Cassie, the 1920s is probably the backwards limit), 50 years after. "Modern" is too ambiguous a concept to worry about.

Clarence Newman

Is that a Fonzie Eh or a Meh kind of Eh?

Mike Lemon

Because there are really only 3 general eras of movies- silent, "classic", and since Jaws or "modern". There will probably be a couple new categories in the future, likely "2015 (The Force Awakens) to full A.I." and "after A.I.," but that hasn't happened yet.

John Cranberry

Cassie: Seen this. Group: We want to see it again with you. Go Gremlins!!!!

Richard Maurer

I think many, if not most, patrons, based on the usual poll winners, are most familiar with movies of the late 70’s and on. Once you go back to the early 70’s it drops off dramatically. Also, the familiarity with older movies and series changes based on whether you grew up with broadcast TV, cable TV, or internet. Once the internet became the main source of people’s exposure to content much of the older films and series were “lost”.

Richard Maurer

Chris - you didn’t reveal any key plot points, plot twists, or the ending of the movie - therefore definitionally NOT a spoiler. Mentioning anything that happens in a movie or show is only a “spoiler” if it falls into one of those three categories. If mentioning anything at all that happens in a movie or series becomes a spoiler then every film critics’ review becomes a spoiler, and it completely removes our ability to discuss films and series beyond ‘I like/dislike this movie/series’ and even that is too much for some people.

Jackson Harper

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is losing by a large margin. I knew that would happen when I voted for it. Very few have seen it, I guess. But y’all, it is truly wonderful. Not the best Christmas movie ever, but up there with A Charlie Brown Christmas as being truly about the meaning of Christmas. And not just for Jesus reasons. But because it’s about inclusion, community, love, and understanding.

TechPriest

To Clay's point - it's just the usage of the word "modern" that seems strange here to me. I don't find the splits at 1970 to be a necessarily bad (or good) way to segregate the polls. There's justifications you can come up with to support that - cameras and film started to get much better, what was permissible in a movie certainly started going wild in the late 70s and into 80s, etc, etc. It's just using the word modern to describe something before the Internet at this point is pretty inaccurate. Otherwise we have to accept Ataris as modern. 😛

Andrew Rose

If your looking for funny christmas movies you'd be way better off with The Ref. That one Carly could definitely watch with you.

Clay F

+1 for The Ref. A respectable 3rd place. One of the only 3 movies with more than 200 votes.

Richard Maurer

From the start of the internet there was a considerable gap to the point where the majority of people were getting their content from streaming. This was the DVD era, when Netflix was entirely a company mailing DVDs to people’s homes.

Chris Thom

Cassie said she read the book and loved it. So I'm surprised she hasn't seen it yet.

Doc Larry/old geezer

I think we need a separate poll for “orphan” Christmas movies—films that are true gems but never quite make it into the mainstream. This poll actually shows why. A Boy Called Christmas is receiving almost no votes, despite being original, heartfelt, and beautifully made. Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) is in it, and she’s wonderful, as always. It’s a genuinely lovely film. That’s all I’ll say—no spoilers.
