Hey guys! Ben here.

I've been working on a web app that helps people browse and filter through Cassie's library of reactions in order to easily find something they'd like to watch. There's also some other social/community features that are implemented.

It's a work in progress and built from the ground up, but I'd love your help testing it out and finding the bugs/issues so I can get them fixed. It's mostly optimized for pc use, not mobile at the moment.

This is not going to be taking the place of Patreon, it's built to go hand-in-hand. So no worries if you're not wanting to use it, Patreon will always be here.

If you're interested in helping test it out, I just need you to click the button below to and sign up with your patreon name/email and I'll send you an invite code. I'll start sending them out in about an hour. I appreciate your help!

Beta Sign Up

PS: Game of Thrones S4 EP 3-4 will be up tonight!

Tyler Lathrop

Wow this is awesome, signing up now! Excited for GoT tonight!

Ben the reactos Cinebinge also have a website like this that is connected to Patreon. George built it all himself and has been testing it. They host unedited versions with the full movie playing and have talked to lawyers that say this falls under fair use. Might be good to reach out them them since I know you've talked before and they are always willing to help

Kawaii Leonard

I would help but I'm unhelpful. 😢

WestBound

Read it in Mathesar voice( galaxy quest ) WE NEED YOUR HELLLLPP

JohnnyUtah

Thank the old gods and the new I've been keeping everything on my own spreadsheet to help navigate things.

Dan M

Ben, I’d love to help, but I’m probably the least tech savvy Patreon member Cassie has. But I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines. Hope the test goes smoothly for you. 🤞

Katie Jackson

I don't have a computer, only mobile but if you get mobile going I'll definitely check it out. I actually have an Echo Show 15 with a 15 in. screen mounted to my wall next to my tv. I can stream Cassie's reaction on the Echo Show & the movie on my tv. So I get a big screen reaction.

Jacob and Kim

This looks great. Can’t wait to try it out!

Steve Holton

There may indeed be lawyers eager to challenge the notion of “fair use” in a court of law, but production companies are more likely to force that issue if the full version of the film is shown on Patreon. If a creator is up for that court fight, showing the full version of the film might be worth the risk. But creators engaging in that risk invite many potential unwanted consequences. This becomes especially dangerous for a creator as successful as Popcorn In Bed. PIB would be the best target to make an example out of if a copyright holder wanted to force the issue.

Brian Sheely

Hi Ben I’m a software engineer, and Cassie is my favorite movie reactor. Let me know if there’s anything I can help with.

kaiielle

It's important to note that George and Simone from Cinebinge are Canadian and therefore would have consulted Canadian lawyers about that. I'm sure the advice regarding the possibility of legal persecution from an American studio/distributor is going to be different when you're not based in the US vs. based in the US.

Goofaman

I’m gonna put this bluntly in his delicately as I can. Petron already does everything you’re trying to do. I only see this is an attempt to monetize this outside of Patreon. And I don’t wanna have to sign up for something else. I would much rather you take the time to put captions on the full length videos that we pay for. I mean, is it even legal for you not to put captioning on them?

kaiielle

If you change your mind, you would be the perfect beta tester *because* you're not tech savvy! People always want to ensure their websites are intuitive and easy to navigate for folks like you too!

kaiielle

Individual creators like Cassie are not subject to the legal requirement for captions. That falls under "best practice". Even still, YouTube *should* be auto-captioning the full-length reactions anyway, though it might not be available on every video. Patreon also provides auto-captions for anything uploaded directly to the platform.

Just Plain Bob

I’m still waiting for the general discussion thread.

kaiielle

Ben, this looks fantastic! With how large the PIB reaction library is now, this will be so much easier for people new to watching PIB and new to the Patreon to find what they want to watch. Patreon's navigation is pretty terrible once you get past a certain amount of content to sift through, even with Collections helping out a *little* bit. But Collections are on the creators to set up and manage. Your website looks much easier to sort the videos! I also LOVE that you have the streaming services built in to allow people to filter by what they would have subscriptions to and can watchalong to. That's brilliant. And the possibilities for the Forum are endless. Can't wait!

kaiielle

See: Forum on the top menu. ;)

Just Plain Bob

Where is the top menu? I’m using my iPhone.

Dan M

Thanks, Kaiielle! I’ll consider it some more.

kaiielle

Sorry! The photos that Ben shared in this post of the PIB website might be too small for you to see the words in the Navigation menu. There is a link in it that says "Forum".

Dan M

That’s cool! I’ve never heard of an Echo Show 15 (validation of my comment below 🙃). It sounds kind of like a projector.

Dan M

🎶Dun, dun……DUNNNN!🎶 😁

Just Plain Bob

That explains it. We were talking about two different things. Many months ago, the discussion thread on the FAQ post disappeared. The explanation was that it was never intended to become a general discussion thread. I suggested a dedicated collection titled General Discussion with a brief video and written explanation that it was a thread intended for general discussion of movies, with the usual rules to apply (no politics, no racism, etc). Cassie seemed enthused by the suggestion and then…deafening silence. Never heard a word since then.

Dave

Yes, please try it out! Ben would like as much feedback as possible, savvy or not. It's all important and useful, not to mention very much appreciated!

Chris Thom

I go back and forth about if they should be listed by date released on the channel, or alphabetical, or by view counts. Looks good, but maybe unnecessary? The search bar here works well, I just keep forgetting about it. lol

Popcorn In Bed

Haha you don't need to be delicate, or blunt? My feelings won't get hurt, I promise. I understand your point, but no, Patreon can't do what I'm trying to do with this. Plus, I specifically said in the post that this isn't replacing Patreon. Everything continues here as normal! -Ben

Popcorn In Bed

Mobile works just fine. There are some visual issues is all! - Ben

kaiielle

You would be able to customize that sorting yourself.

Steve Holton

The design looks great! Seems intuitive from those pictures. If you do end up getting a lot of help questions on it, one thing a lot of designers add these days once the work is finished is an A.I. chatbot on the main page. The chatbot could answer FAQ and offer links to users to click on after they ask a question. Some companies offer “No Code” chatbots if you are interested. But probably not needed at this point.

kaiielle

You may have missed it, but Cassie had communicated that they were working on something behind the scenes to replace that - I believe it was during a live. The Forum on this website seems to be the replacement and I presume it will behave as any other online Forum does, which means that will be infinitely better than trying to find new conversation and replies within Patreon comments. Especially when a comment gets so many replies that Patreon breaks and hides some of them from ever being seen again...

Popcorn In Bed

Also, this is free and would only require you linking your patreon account if you wanted... no extra charges.

Ben Jack

Anyone else having trouble getting past the "Choose your username" step? I keep getting an "Authentication required" error.

kaiielle

Setting up a chatbot might be more work/money than it's worth for the amount of users this site will have. An alternative solution would be for Ben to create a section of the Forum that is intended as FAQ/Support - it would have a few different informational threads (with replies turned off) and then a thread for support from Ben/mods. Perhaps also one for feedback. Then below it would be the sections and threads that members can create new posts in and reply to others in.

Above Average Dave

SHOW YOURSELF, MAN! THEN I'LL DOWNLOAD THIS APPLICATION OF YOURS! (Just kidding. I'll give it a try tomorrow. I'm on a Mac. Will that matter?

Popcorn In Bed

Hey Ben, did you sign up via email, patreon or google?

Art of Free Speech

This will be a great addition once done. I hate having to figure out how to find a specific reaction once I decide to watch a given movie. I look forward to helping out.

Steve Holton

Kaiielle, you are probably right. Although third party chatbots with a monthly fee are designed for easy setup and are scalable. And if the fees for third party are prohibitive some programmers could volunteer one as an add on if they are game. Just thought I'd mention it.

Just Plain Bob

Sorry, I just don’t see the utility in this. Patreon works fine for me. It seems like they’re intending to move to the new site over time, to avoid the fees they’d otherwise have to pay Patreon. I understand the motivation and, in their position, I’d likely do the same. But I’m not in their position. I have no desire to switch to a new platform. All I ever needed was enjoyable movie reactions and an opportunity to gab with fellow movie enthusiasts. I can already do that here. I have no more desire to learn to navigate a new site than I did months back when one of the mods tried to get me to use Discord. It’s unfortunate because the fix to general discussion that I suggested is the kinda thing that could’ve been accomplished in a day or so (probably less).

Mike Lemon

Okay, since you said blunt was fine- what's the point? What are you trying to accomplish? What features are you trying to implement? I see a forum mentioned below- why? If it is *not* intended to replace Patreon, it seems to me that it is just another fracturing of the comments. There are already, what, 6 "forums"? - reddit, youtube, youtube community, patreon, patreon chat, discord. Are there any others, besides rumble?

Daniel John

But Cassie is Canadian too!!! 😜

kaiielle

It's a good idea!

Johnny Bullis

Hey Cass.. did you stop sending out codes? I signed up an hour ago and havent seen a code sent.

Clay F

It's Ben.

Dave

I will forward this to Ben

Jason Fulbright

I'm also having trouble with the "Choose your username" I signed in with Patreon. I do see a pink circle in the upper right corner with a "J" on it and when I click on it I can see a drop down list and ther is a name (not sure if ok to print on forum) with a green dot. The "Profile & Settings" tab just goes right back to the: beta.popcorninbed/on boarding/create-username

Clay F

This looks great -- the browsing/filtering. And social/community features are welcomed. Edit: The closer I look at those images, the better I like it. Edit: I noticed "Requests" at the top center (between Playlists and Dashboard) -- is that Popcorn Requests?

Coleton B.

Hey Jason! Thanks for mentioning this, it's been reported on the site through the report a bug feature (thanks to whoever did this, appreciate it!) This is the point of the Beta; To find the bugs! :)

Jason Fulbright

Yup, I wa just going to submit a report but sounds like you have it.

Popcorn In Bed

Jason, will you try again when you have a second? - Ben

Ben Jack

Thanks Ben!! -Ben

Coleton B.

Bob, if you read Ben's post he said "This is not going to be taking the place of Patreon, it's built to go hand-in-hand. Patreon will always be here"

Jason Fulbright

I'm in. I think it was when I used the access code but clicked the "Patreon" also. When I clicked use the code I'm in. PEBKAC

Clay F

I signed up over an hour ago and haven't received a code.

kaiielle

I'm excited for the forum because Patreon is not built to handle the level of activity that occurs here. I love replying to people here, but I hate not getting notified when they've replied back to me. Manually checking for that, across multiple comments on multiple posts, is frustrating and time-consuming. I have many other complaints about how Patreon handles comments. A forum is perfect for handling general conversations that can last weeks and months now, instead of just a few days. There were some comments about a sports team on a post recently... forum solves that. The specific thread about that team can be active with conversation every season and sit there inactive when it's not. As soon as someone posts in it, it shoots up to the top of the Forum when sorted by "Recently Active". Very easy to keep up with conversations.

Just Plain Bob

Read it, don’t believe it. Will the new site be free? I doubt it. Will people be able to watch reactions on the new site? Because, if it’s not free and offers reactions, it’s in direct competition with the channel on Patreon. So, will people pay for both? Doubtful, which means they’ll have to choose. And if they get to a tipping point where it’s more lucrative to dump Patreon and go all in on the new site, of course they’ll do so. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

Raieldon

ooo, is that a tab for popcornrequests integration?

Popcorn In Bed

You'll have to check it out! It offers people a way to browse and filter through Cassie's reactions in a way that you can't on Patreon and YT. They can create their own custom playlists, rank their favorites, request movies etc. It also has the option of comments and forums. You don't have to use it if you don't want to. It doesn't cost anything. -Ben

Coleton B.

Bob, if you read through the responses to similar questions in this chat thread, you'll see Ben mention the site is free; You're more than welcome to try it out for yourself and see yes, you can absolutely watch linked reactions. Not sure how this website for PiB can be in direct competition, but like you said "read it, don't believe it". I can't appeal to your emotional conviction that this free site with reaction content isn't free and competes with reaction content from the same creator. Hope you give it a shot, you may like it! Ben worked really hard and it shows!

Johnny Bullis

Am I getting one as well? You mentioned Clay under my initial comment. I am very interested in helping out.

Popcorn In Bed

it’s basically just a better way to organize things. We are not trying to monetize this at all , just have a more helpful library of my reactions. it’s cool because you can filter by streaming website and see all the reactions of mine that are on netflix, hbo etc at that time. If you are feeling like a steve martin flick-you can filter by that and see all the stuff i watched that had steve martin in it. Ben has spent hundreds of hours on this-it’s literally just to help-that’s all, it has some really cool organization and filtering tools that can make sure to find the content you want! it’s free to use if you’re a patron- so it’s not in competition to patreon because you have to be a patron to use it

Just Plain Bob

Good to hear. More power to you, then. I hope it’s a raving success. That said, I’m contented with things here (other than the absence of a general discussion thread) so I’ll not be using it. I’m old and relatively inflexible so I have no interest in learning to navigate a new site. But, as I said, hope it’s a success.

Anthony Carlson

I was able to access the site from my phone! No tribble at all! 😂

Popcorn In Bed

@Clay it says you received one. Check the spam maybe? Let me know.

Popcorn In Bed

Johnny, did you signup via the button here? You should get one shortly if you did.

Johnny Bullis

Yes.. I clicked on the button above. And thank you.. I look forward to helping out.

Clay F

Sounds much more nimble and user friendly than Patreon.

kaiielle

I am in there now. So much nicer. Will be even better once there is lots of discussion.

Anthony Carlson

On the site, at the Popcorn Requests page, there’s a message that said “Upgrade to Little Kernel tier or above to rank movies. You can still view community rankings!” I’m Extra Butter so is this a bug on that page?

Just Plain Bob

Coleton, in my defense a lot of confusion could’ve been avoided if the initial post by Ben had said the site is free. Obviously that changes everything. As I said in my response to Cassie, I still won’t be using it. I don’t have any difficulty navigating the Patreon website, so it doesn’t really have any utility for me. But I do hope others find it useful and it’s a success.

Clay F

Ben, thanks for the resend. I received it.

Dave

yes, a bug. Ben is working on that, it will be fixed

Anthony Carlson

Got Ben’s message on the beta to resync my Patreon account to display my tier. Thank you nevertheless Dave!

Johnny Bullis

I got the code and am a beta tester.. thanks Ben/Cassie.. I love the setup of the new website.

Dave

lol, I was just about to point that out. The fix worked for me, hope it did for you as well

Katie Jackson

It's like an Alexa but it's a small tv. So along with being able to watch reactions, it also can keep track of my packages, has a weather app, can be used with smart devices to control different household items (like lights) play music and several other things. They have a camera and connect with your phone so you can use it to video chat or as a security camera to check in on your house as well. They really offer alot of options on one device. I bought mine on Amazon 3 years ago. Now they also sell one with a 21 inch screen.

Mike Lemon

"...a way to browse and filter ..." Patreon- search> movie I want YouTube- search> popcorn in bed [movie I want] Rumble- easy browsing, but no updates. Still hoping for Maverick some day. "create their own custom playlists" I don't see the point, but "you do you" I guess. "rank their favorites, request movies" So, Planner's app? Or is this replacing it? "option of comments and forums." See the second paragraph in my original comment. "You don't have to use it if you don't want to." But you haven't told me why I should want to.

Richard Maurer

I don’t really have the time to dedicate to a beta test now, otherwise I’d help, but from what I’m reading in the comments it looks promising. I’ll definitely check it out when it’s debugged.

Clarence Newman

While you're setting stuff up, I have a more general question. Cassie is 5k away from hitting HALF A MILLION subscribers on Youtube. Do we have a party planned?

Astraeos

Wow, from what I've seen so far, this is a really thoughtfully designed website. I'm definitely excited to see how this develops!

Clarence Newman

She'll be there by the end of January at the current rate, Mark. As far as I can see, her numbers are growing about 1k a week.

Joe J

Natalie Gold has already crossed 500k YT subs...so I'm sure Cassie has noticed that and doesn't want to fall behind. 😆

Joe J

Now with this new "forum" tab, what happens to Chat and Discord?

Clarence Newman

That doesn't surprise me, Joe. Having got into the reaction world by watching a number of composite videos featuring multiple reactors, it eventually came down to a choice between two - Cassie was one, Natalie Gold was the other.

Chris Thom

Titanic or Avatar might do it.

Cole Jennett

Natalie started her channel a good while before Cassie so she has always been ahead. I think Cassie has consistently been narrowing the gap.

Clay F

Both Discord and Extra Butter Chat are arguably near dead imo. So little patron participation. Patrons have been encourage for years to use Discord to no avail. There have been times when I feel like I am near alone on Extra Butter Chat -- plus that is only Extra Butter. In any case, the new "forum" tab is a supplement, not a replacement.

Clay F

I played around on the site last night and liked it. I think "Requests" (a new "Popcorn Requests") has potential to be good, especially when finalized. I like the way higher tiers get more points to rank, unlike the old Popcorn Requests. Plus, you get a tenure bonus (points for how many years you have been a patron). So those who are kernel club ($10/mo) or extra butter ($15/mo), and have been a patron for a couple of years or more = get the most points. In contrast, I believe at current Popcorn Requests, there is no difference, for example, between free (non-paid) Patreon member who has been a member for 1-month versus Kernel Club or Extra Butter patron who has been a member for 4 yrs.

Clay F

My guess is 497k YT subscribers by end of the year.

Gray

I used my extra points boosting Jackie Chan movies, hopefully come the Buddy Cop poll we'll finally get Rush Hour on the channel.

Chris Thom

Patreon does have some random glitches sometimes. They don't make a ton of sense. But it's almost always something.

Popcorn In Bed

Yes with continued tweaks and improvements it should be a fun way of ranking movies! Keep in mind that we owe a lot to planner, who created the original popcorn requests website. He put many hours into building it, and he didn't have access to all of the proper resources (full patreon authentication, webhooks etc) which I'm sure really limited him in his potential. He deserves all the credit in the world for his work!

Clay F

Good points. The planner is awesome. Capable and a good guy to interface with, and put in a lot of work. He did excellent with what he had at hand.

Popcorn In Bed

Give it a try and let me know if you having any issues or suggestions!

Mike Lemon

Okay, that answered one of my questions.

Popcorn In Bed

I don't understand why you're trying to turn this into something negative. Try to be positive for once Mike. This is free. It's not replacing Patreon. In what other way would this affect you negatively? If you don't see the point that's fine but here are some use cases... Let's pretend I love war movies, especially war movies between 1975 and 1985. Do you know which war movies Cassie watched between those years? How would one search for that on Patreon or YouTube? I guess you could scan through 600+ video titles and mark them down by hand. I can tell the answer in 2 seconds... Red Dawn Das Boot First Blood Apocalypse Now The African Queen. Now let's pretend I'm a big Robin Williams fan. I'm new to the channel and have no idea what movies Cassie's seen with Robin Williams in it. The top 3 results when typing "Robin Williams" in patreon are... Good Morning Vietnam (good!) The Adventures of Robin Hood (?) Air Force One (?) However in 2 seconds on the web app I can see that she's actually reacted to 4 movies with Robin WIlliams: AI Artificial Intelligence What Dreams May Come Hook Good Morning, Vietnam (the data I have doesn't include reactions past Superman (2025)) Now let's pretend the only streaming service I have is Netflix and can only watch reactions that are available on the Netflix platform. How would I search for that on Patreon or YouTube? Well if I just filter by streaming service on the web app I can see all 46 movies that are streaming on Netflix that Cassie has reacted to. As far as playlists go... users can make playlists and share them publicly with whoever. It's interesting to see someone's favorite top 10 reactions, or custom playlists like "movies with a twist that redefines the entire movie in the final minutes" etc. Yes, this would replace popcorn requests. And as far as comments go, there are many discussion mediums spread all over the place. Most of them have no discussion or engagement. Mainly Patreon and YouTube. The forum/comment system on the website is just another way people can discuss the reactions and movies (and whatever they want) in an organized manner that's customized around Cassie's reactions. These are just a few of the use cases. There are many more. Try it out yourself or don't. Not an issue either way! -Ben

Mike Lemon

"I don't understand why you're trying to turn this into something negative. " Ditto. "Try to be positive for once Mike. " That always ends very bad for me. "Do you know which war movies Cassie watched between those years?" If I knew war movies I would. Also, First Blood isn't a war movie, but that is getting pedantic and doesn't really matter. "I'm new to the channel ..." Ah, a use. See, I have been here for almost forever so I know what she has seen I am interested in and have already watched it. Plus, I would prefer simple text I can scan quickly, but I'm me. "Now let's pretend the only streaming service I have..." I don't have any streaming service, only physical media ripped to a hard drive. "Yes, this would replace popcorn requests." So what happens to that? Is it dead and all the work people put into it is now worthless?

Popcorn In Bed

Okay so we've figured out the web app isn't for you Mike. And no, all the work "people" (actually just one person) put into popcorn requests is not worthless. That's one of your straight-to-negative assumptions. I've given much praise to Planner for the work he put into it. The data is there, we just have to figure out a way to transfer it. Any other details you'd like to know more about?

Mike Lemon

"Okay so we've figured out the web app isn't for you Mike. " We haven't figured that out. "(actually just one person) " And the hundreds(?) that each spent hours putting in requests. "That's one of your straight-to-negative assumptions. " That was just a question.

Mike Lemon

Chat's problem is allowing pictures. As soon as any "forum" allows that that is all it becomes.

Clay F

The new and different "Popcorn Requests" in this new web app is easy to use. Starting over from scratch -- not tied to the old Popcorn Requests. *The points for ranking: Little Kernel - 5 points Popcorners - 7 Kernel Club - 10 Extra Butter - 12 *Tenure Bonus. Long-time supporters get +1 point per year. Just playing around, I gave all of my 12 points for being Extra Butter to "Friday Night Lights" (2004) (awesome movie). 1. My 12 points combined w/points from two other rankers to make Friday Night Lights (2004) No. 1 with 27.0 points (3 rankers). 2. Ip Man is No. 2 with 18.2 points (2 rankers). 3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) is No. 3 with 15.7 points (3 rankers). She has seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986).

Clay F

She has definitely seen the TV series but not the movie. Listed as "Unseen" in Popcorn Requests.

Richard Maurer

Question: is the old Popcorn Requests being phased out and will it be eventually completely shut down? Also is there a way to import your requests from Popcorn Requests or will we have to do that manually?

Mike Lemon

Ben kind of answered down in my comment - Yes, it's done. Maybe on reentering everything manually, but I would guess it is actually probably.

Richard Maurer

Well, I probably need to weed some stuff off of my list anyway. But still that’s close to 200 films.

Clarence Newman

Oi Richard! Don't make me pull out our Cannonball Run upvote contract! You are legally, ethically and spuriously required to maintain your reluctant support of CR on Poopcorn Requests (old or new) or HoD bites the big one.

Joe J

Search bar does the job in finding a film.

Joe J

Very nice tool, maybe more than most patrons need. Be curious what the engagement level will be. I won't use it much myself, just don't need to.

Clarence Newman

I'm such a braindead neanderthal. Clay, having created a playlist, it then invites you to add movies, but when it goes to that page, I don't see how to add. I put a film title in the Add Reactions box, but when I hit Enter or Search, nothing happens. What am I missing?

Dave

Sounds like you are doing it correctly, Clarence. We were having issues with that before the beta testing was opened up- I'll mention it to Ben.

Richard Maurer

Clarence - so glad you brought this up! I was recently checking some of my top movies to see how many other people had voted for them (also rechecking just now) and guess what I discovered!?! No Clarence votes for Jason and the Argonauts, The Final Programme, and…….Horror of Dracula! Only Shin Godzilla and It Follows had votes by you. So , tell me again why I shouldn’t remove my vote for Cannonball Run? A film I never wanted to vote for anyway? 😠😡 (so annoyed I was forced to use emojis, which I hate).

Tyler Foster

Adding favorite reactions and I see Son in Law has the image for Superman.

Clarence Newman

Well, that’s some boooolsheet! I did so vote for most of those bad boys, ESPECIALLY Horror of Dracula! I am a man of my word and that word is currently “Slandered”!

Richard Maurer

You callin’ me a liar now? Them’s fightin’ words. Go check for yourself, cheater!

Richard Maurer

By the way, I still haven’t removed Cannonball Run - yet.

Clay F

Joe - you might use the Requests feature if Cassie uses that as a source to randomly select poll candidates. I been wanting a system that favors kernel/extra butter and long-term membership. Also, I think the system can auto update based on changes to your membership? Thus, for people who become no longer patrons, their requests are purged? Conversely, the old popcorn requests is stale — has requests made years ago by people no longer patrons. By the way, in the new system, free members can participate but their points are zero.

Joe J

Date ranges and views ranges didn't work right. Anyone else see that issue?

Clarence Newman

I will definitely check. I’m not sure about all of them, but I KNOW I upvoted HoD!

Richard Maurer

Maybe you “accidentally” removed it?

Clay F

Richard -- I don't see how the old Popcorn Requests and the new Popcorn Requests could be integrated. The old Popcorn Requests will remain. A tiny number of patrons use it. You should go to the new web app and check out the new Popcorn Requests -- would only take you a few minutes. Play around with it. There are bugs and missing stuff -- but that will be resolved. For now, you can see how it works. Plus, Ben welcomes feedback.

Clay F

For the new Popcorn Requests, I get 12 points for being extra butter. I added 5 movies and did drag/drop to put in order of my desired ranking (see below). My 12 points auto distributed by exponential decay: 1. Capote (2005) = 6.19 points 2. Lion (2016) = 3.10 3. Thelma & Louise (1991) = 1.55 4. Vicky Cristina Barcelona = 0.77 5. Traffic (2000) = 0.39 When tenure bonus implemented, I will get additional 2 pts for total of 14 pts. I love the exponential decay.

Clarence Newman

I've just checked, Richard. You're absolutely right, but it's still some boolshizzle. There were only 6 requests on my list, and while HoD wasn't there, four of those requests were for your films and NONE OF THEM were for Cannonball Run or Cool Hand Luke. What the everloving frick!? I have now rectified the situation. HoD is back on there, plus about 30 of my own, far superior films.

Richard Maurer

Was with you until you claimed that 30 films that you like are somehow better than Horror of Dracula, which we both know isn’t true.

Clarence Newman

To coin a phrase, my Peter Cushing defeats your Christopher Lee. I think it's a moot point though, because both our ringers are languishing somewhere in the 500s. We may have to continue to wear the t-shirt and carry the placards.

Popcorn In Bed

Thanks for reporting these. The library is not complete quite yet but we're working on it. If you see other issues just report them. Thank you! -Ben

Tyler Foster

Yes, since posting this I both 1) figured out how to report issues and 2) then figured out how to categorize them properly. Several of them I incorrectly submitted as "misinformation" until I discovered the "movie data incorrect" option. Sorry about that.

K, Zachary

I am thankful for this new site, I am extremely thankful to Ben for all is hard work on this he seems to be the lead on this. I had no problems with this site and found it easy to use.

Dave

Clarence - I saw your playlist and I think I see why it won't add titles. The playlist feature is for listing movies that Cassie has reacted to, not for movies she hasn't reacted to.

Richard -- In the new PR being tested (a different animal than the old PR), some patrons are submitting only a single movie b/c they want all their points to be assigned to that movie. Mike Lemon submitted only The McMartin Trial and thus all his 12 points assigned to that movie. The new PR (in beta) could be used for a random selection of poll candidates, as is the old PR. Do you recall patrons discussing a 2nd PAF system (not affecting the original PAF) in which patrons would each submit a single movie to be a poll candidate, and that each month say 10 entries would be randomly selected for a poll? To me, the new PR is somewhat akin to that. In old PR, a patron upvotes tens or hundreds, but new PR focus for patron is really a patron’s top 3 b/c of way (exponential decay) their points are assigned. As an example (below), for 13 movies submitted and ranked by a patron having 12 pts, the distribution of points is as below. An exponential decay. Approaches zero. Thus, imo the focus for a patron will be really say their top 3. There are other considerations. #1 – 6.00 pts #2 – 3.00 #3 – 1.50 #4 – 0.75 #5 – 0.38 #6 – 0.19 #7 – 0.09 #8 – 0.05 #9 – 0.02 #10 – 0.01 #11 – 0.01 #12 – 0.00 #13 – 0.00

Clay F

I like the way it guides patrons to focus on their true top (favorite) movies.

Richard Maurer

You’ve convinced me Clay. Now I just need to find the time to do all this.

Richard Maurer

I would assume that other people requesting the same movie as you would count more than the movies place on your personal list? Here’s the scenario I’m talking about: you put a movie at #1 on your list, but no else but you votes for it. Meanwhile the movie in last place on your list has a second vote from another patron. Does having two votes count more than one person’s preference? I assume it would. That’s how it worked on the old Popcorn Requests. Personal preference only counted on movies of near equal standing as to number of votes.

Clay F

You onto something but not the number of votes that counts. Instead, it is points. For example, movie C could get 100 'votes' (requests) averaging 0.1 points each = 10 points total. Movie D could get only 1 'vote' (request) but that is 12 points. Movie D wins. As for strategy, consider you have ranked no movies (and thus none of your points are assigned to any movie). Say you have 12 points (you will likely have about 16 points but that's a different discussion). For a hypothetical, consider your top two movies (you want a reaction) that have a chance to garner reasonable support from others are movie A and movie B. You prefer movie A over movie B. Thus, you rank movie A in your 1st place and movie B in your 2nd place. That is the only two movies you enter. Therefore, the system (based on exponential decay) auto assigns 8 of your 12 points to movie A and 4 of your 12 points to movie B. You look at current overall ranking in system, and see movie B ranks fairly high (has decent points), whereas movie A ranks low (just a few points). Movie B is not your first choice, but you would be very happy with a reaction to movie B. Therefore, you put movie B in your first place (your personal ranking), so that movie B gets 8 points from you, that pushes movie B up to 56th place in the overall rankings. You further notice that if you delete movie A altogether from your personal ranking so that movie B is the only movie you have entered -- then movie B gets all of your 12 points and that pushes movie B into 51st place in the overall rankings. Lastly, you then notice that movie B only needs 1 point to move into 50th place (the top 50). You know I like movie B ok and you ask me give 1 point to movie B. In response, I add movie B to my personal rankings so that movie B gets at least 1 point from me and that pushes movie B up to at least 50th place (the top 50).

Clay F

If poll candidates are randomly selected from the new PR as with the old PR, then you want your entries to be in top 10, top 50, top 100, top 200, top 250, top 500 ... Once I see what the rankings are like, I suspect that I will prefer random selections from top 10, top 50, top 100, or top 200. What's cool, it's not stale. Entries will be recent, at least in the beginning, but importantly by active patrons? I am thinking if a person becomes no longer a patron, their assigned points will be auto deleted? Also, less static than old PR. There will be ongoing tweaking, adjusting giving movement. Long term patrons who are kernel or extra butter will get the most points. I like how the exponential decay guides people to focu on their true top requests. More akin to non-obscure PAF entries than the old PR.

Is the site crashing for anyone else while trying to view comments on any of the posts

Richard Maurer

This may affect my current PaF strategy. Instead of rotating 2 movies I will likely switch to the one with zero chance of getting watched otherwise.

kaiielle

Great explanation Clay. I had gone in and added a bunch of movies, but when I realized that most of my movie choices were assigned such minimal points (because I only have so many points to distribute), I removed most of them from my Requests. Now I only have 7 movies requested. I believe you're right with your prediction - that requests are automatically adjusted when the status of a Patreon member changes. Whether they upgrade/downgrade tiers, or go from paid to free, that presumably will adjust the points assignment for their picks. And they may go in and re-rank as a result. EDIT: Free members have 0 points, but their requests still remain, so if a paid member cancels for a couple of months (but stays as a free member) and then comes back, their PR requests will still remain in place, and the points will just get re-assigned. Presuming we're right, the PR list is going to be very fluid and changing often, which I think is great. But because of this, I think that for the foreseeable future, it would be best if Cassie only focuses on watching whatever is in the Top 5 or 10 (maaaybe Top 25). It's likely that when drawing from a Top 50-200 or more, the movie that is drawn could have been submitted by only one person, and perhaps even someone at a lower tier that doesn't even qualify for Pick-a-Flick. So it may become Pick-a-Flick 2.0 in that sense. And it is more likely to be a Patreon Exclusive vs. a movie that multiple people submitted. Since YouTube edits are a priority, it would make sense to keep PR on the top results for now, until more members have set up accounts and get their requests put in. Hopefully even if members here aren't interested in aspects of the site like using it to watch reactions, or participating in the Forum, they will still use it for Popcorn Requests. Once there are hundreds of people who have put requests in, then expanding the draws could be fine. But that still depends too. Will new users on the site just look at the list of the Top 50, let's say, and click "Add to List", instead of submitting their own movies? Maybe. Hard to say what people will do. The way the new PR system is set up motivates me to make sure my picks are what I really want and in the order that I want. But ultimately, I really hope that this means Cassie will dedicate way more reaction slots in the year to knocking out movies on this list. Otherwise, motivation from members to use it will die very fast.

Richard Maurer

I may be able to narrow my list down to forty. Maybe.

Richard Maurer

Okay I have a question - just voting for a movie doesn’t affect your points right? I mean as long as it’s not on your list too? This would be different from the old PR where voting for a movie put it on your list. Because if voting for someone else’s movie takes points from you there are going to be a whole lot of movies with just one vote.

Clay F

There really is no voting. You put movies on your personal list -- that's it. Conveniently, when you look at the global list of movies others have added to their personal list, there is an icon next to each movie to click to add to your personal list if you so choose. Putting a movie on your personal list could be considered voting. (If you play with the system in beta, you will understand and see it immediately. Easy to understand.) **If you put only one movie on your personal list, then you have 'voted' for only one movie = akin to PAF. In effect, really can only vote for (put on personal list) 7 or 8 movies b/c after that the points go to zero. (I guess fractions of a point could add up among multiple patrons placing the same movie on their list in a low rank.) [But really the days of upvoting tens or hundreds of movies as with the old PR are over (long gone) w/this new PR.] Again, you vote for (select) a movie by putting it on your list. Your 'voting' is placing/ranking movies on your personal list. In the example below, the points are based on a patron who has 12 points. Patrons will have different total points depending on their patron tier and how many years they have been a patron. EXAMPLE - Patron A w/12 points 'votes' for 13 movies by placing/ranking 13 movies on their personal list below: Movie #1 – 6.00 pts Movie #2 – 3.00 pts Movie #3 – 1.50 pt Movie #4 – 0.75 pt Movie #5 – 0.38 pt Movie #6 – 0.19 pt Movie #7 – 0.09 pt Movie #8 – 0.05 pt Movie #9 – 0.02 pt Movie #10 – 0.01 pt Movie #11 – 0.01 pt Movie #12 – 0.00 pt (non-zero at less than 0.005) Movie #13 – 0.00 pt (non-zero at less than 0.005) As you can see in the above example, Patron A is really voting for only 7 or 8 movies b/c the points after that become negligible.

Clay F

Agree with kaiielle that makes sense to focus on top 50 at least for now. A random selection of 1 movie from top 50 could be winner. A random selection of multiple movies (e.g., 8-10 movies) from top 50 could be patron poll candidates.

Richard Maurer

Yeah, I’m going to have look into this because I’m seeing problems all over the place the way you’re describing it. But I want to check it out before saying anything further.

Clay F

The idea is you pick your absolute top 3 or 4 movies. I like how it prods patrons to put forth only a handful of movies (1-6) that they truly like and think the top best. It is not a system for upvoting movies you are mildly interested, as with the old PR (which will still exist -- but just never has been used that much by patrons). I am hoping the new PR will have more patron participation. It is user friendly and part of an overall comprehensive web app.

Richard Maurer

We’ll see. As I said I have thoughts but need to actually test it myself before I go further.

Richard Maurer

I was going to do this but I can't get a invite code.

Popcorn In Bed

Richard, thanks for letting me know. I'll find out what's going on and get back to you. -Ben

Popcorn In Bed

To confirm, you clicked the button above and put in your Patreon email yes?

Richard Maurer

I enter my email and password - the same as I use for Patreon - and I keep getting ‘invalid entry’ message.

Richard Maurer

Hey, Ben - I fixed this by resetting my password. Not sure why that worked, but it did. I have access now, thanks anyway.

Richard Maurer

Just tried the Requests section on the new site. Like: how easy it was to add movies. Much easier than on Popcorn Requests. Dislike: how the points system makes it virtually impossible to like a movie someone else voted for that is not on your list, unless you want dilute the points for the movies on your list, which is a hold over from Popcorn Requests, one that I never liked. There should be a secondary tier for upvoting other people’s movies, without using your own points. This secondary tier, while it wouldn’t count towards the ranking, would show that there is interest in these films. As it stands now it’s just another popularity contest where only the super popular films have a chance to be seen, made worse by the fact that only the top 100 films can be easily accessed. And as we know, the popular films are rarely the best films.

Gray

I'm sure it will be tinkered with but right now The Nice Guys is at the top and that's all good with me, looking at the list there is about 5 films she's definitely seen in the top 25 so i'm guessing it will adjusted again.

Richard Maurer

You really shouldn't be able to add films she's already seen but like you said it's a work in progress.

Richard Maurer

I’ve been testing this out, see my posts above.

Joe J

The ability to upvote other movies does seem critical if the app is to be a useful ranking system. Curious how Ben will address this issue.

Richard Maurer

Maybe they could use the points system as the primary ranker and other people’s upvotes as a secondary ranker - they could determine what percentages each of the two “rankers” would count toward the overall rank of a movie for themselves. Personally I think somewhere between 60-40% and 75-25% (points vs upvotes) would be reasonable.

Clay F

Old PR and New PR are different animals but both a popularity contest. No need to submit obscure movies - don't have a chance in hell. With new PR (more akin to non-obscure PAF), submit (rank) your absolute top 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 movies that you think would garner support from others. As for so-called 'upvoting' -- diluting a patron's points is a good thing. Emphasizes patrons' top requests. Further, upvoting with a secondary tier of points in effect dilutes the points you assign in the first tier. I wouldn't object to a secondary tier but seems unecessary. Consider you have 12 pts (first tier - 75%) and 4 pts (second tier - 25%). Could instead just have 16 points. Essentially same thing.

Clay F

Consider hypothetical you have 12 points and enter your top 5 requests: 1. Movie A = 6.19 points 2. Movie B = 3.10 3. Movie C = 1.55 4. Movie D = 0.77 5. Movie E = 0.39 Then, you see Movie F you want to 'upvote' so you add as your 6th movie. If you notice, doesn't dilute your top 5 movies that much. 1. Movie A = 6.10 points 2. Movie B = 3.05 3. Movie C = 1.52 4. Movie D = 0.76 5. Movie E = 0.38 6. Movie F = 0.19 To emphasize Movie F, could place top 5 even though not your top 5 movie. But say secondary tier - give your 4 pts (secondary tier) to Movie F: 1. Movie A = 6.19 points Movie F = 4.0 points (secondary tier) 2. Movie B = 3.10 3. Movie C = 1.55 4. Movie D = 0.77 5. Movie E = 0.39 Your 6.19 points for Movie A diluted from 52% (6.19/12) to 39% (6.19/16), 3.10 pts for Movie B diluted from 26% (3.10/12) to 19% (3.10/16), and so on. Say combine 12 pts (first tier) and 4 pts (second tier) to simply have 16 pts (no tiers). 1. Movie A = 8.13 points 2. Movie F = 4.07 3. Movie B = 2.03 4. Movie C = 1.01 5. Movie D = 0.51 6. Movie E = 0.25 Movie A not really diuted. Movies B, C, D, E diluted both with and w/o secondary tier.

Richard Maurer

Clay - agree to disagree. Your so-called obscure movies are just movies you haven’t (or don’t want to) watch. Looking at your list of movies on the post below there are several I haven’t seen, a couple I don’t even know what they are. And I have a pretty extensive list of films I’m aware of. I remember what happened when Beverly Hills Cop went up against Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on YouTube. The D&D movie easily beat BHC. Limiting the list to a few movies that patrons put on their personal list is much more limiting than what I’m talking about.

Clay F

Emphasizing patrons' top requests is good. Better than a patron making 100 requests of similar value. Obscure movies are movies the vast majority of patrons are unaware of and don't request (upvote) in the old PR nor would assign points to in the new PR. Movies I list below are arbitrary -- simply as example (more about pts distribution than entries). Agree some could be obscure, especially among participating PiB patrons. I would be strategic in providing an evolving/changing Top 5 didn't think obscure (or undesired) on PiB. Confirm in results and tweak my entries to join the plurality best I can stomach. But only need to get into top 50/100 overall. Think I would be able to find 5 movies near or in top 100 that I would love a reaction and assign my pts to those 5. Your reference to YT performance is interesting but meaningless (or at least not really relevant) in context of PR. We talking participating PiB patrons, not YT population. While your secondary tier suggestion is creative, do you really think would make a difference? For one, assigning 16 pts with no tiers vs assigning 12 pts/1st tier + 4 pts/2nd tier is similar. I see in 2-tier system many patrons focus points? For instance: Movie A = 12 pts (1st tier) (their top favorite) Movie B = 4 pts (2nd tier) (their favorite among movies to upvote). If permitted: Movie A = 12 pts (1st tier) Movie A = +4 pts (2nd tier)

Clay F

Two possibilites with random selection from top 50/100: (1) single winner; or (2) 8-10 as poll candidates. For (1), all I am concerned about is getting into the top 50 or top 100. For (2), I would consider how well my entries would perform in a poll (in addition to wanting them in the top 50/100). My first reactor (2.5 yrs, one of her first patrons) = she asks patrons generally for nominations (e.g., max 3 or max 5 per patron) for all her polls. Commonly, 1 or 2 of my noms (and/or a +1 for other nom) show up in the poll, which typically has 20+ entries. I've watched those poll results and now no longer nominate my favorites that consistently perform poorly. Instead, nominate my favorites I think will perform well (at least have a decent chance), i.e., have been in top 20-25% in past polls but didn't win.

Richard Maurer

I could do what Mike Lemon did take a relatively obscure movie (sorry Mike) and put all 12 points into it, basically artificially inflating its number on the list. But it’s still only one vote. And considering how your points are diluted the more you use them, it will likely remain one vote, unless someone else happens to like his movie enough to put it on their list too. There are quite a few movies in the top 100 I would support getting on a poll, but as it stands now, there’s no way to express that support without giving up some of my points for them, which I’m not willing to do. The single worst thing about this new list is that it only shows the top 100. As we know from the previous PR list movies from considerably further down than 100 can and do beat movies in the top 100. But if they are ‘out of sight, out of mind’, as the new top 100 list keeps them, they have no way to garner support. Limiting the visibility to just 100 films doesn’t work for me. Currently Free Guy stands at the top of list. Is it really the most popular movie? I doubt it. But that will likely change when it goes live. And that’s the problem, when many more patrons add their picks to a live list we won’t even be able to see most of the movie picks beyond 100 or be or able to support any of them in any meaningful way.
