This one really surprised me ... I really liked it. He might have been my fav Scrooge yet! I need to rewatch the other ones before any final rankings though. This story is always just such a great reminder of what’s important, especially this time of year.

Its crazy that George C Scott was only 56 when he did this. He looked old even without the makeup.

Anthony Carlson

This is the Christmas Carol my parents and family always watch on Christmas Day, especially after Christmas dinner. Although I always watch It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve, but this is definitely something to watch on Christmas Day!

Larry Darrell

Before you rewatch the ones you’ve seen, you need to watch the most bestest, most definitive version, with the Best acted Ebenezer Scrooge… A Christmas Carol (1951), with Alastair Sim. Please watch this one. It’s a Must.

Clay F

This will be my second Christmas Carol movie. My first was A Christmas Carol (1999) w/Patrick Stewart (which I liked) (watched only once, and that was last year).

Stick Figure Studios

You should also watch THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL, the musical SCROOGE with Albert Finney and the 1951 version with Alastair Sim.

Stick Figure Studios

This is a great version. Might be my favorite after the musical SCROOGE and THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL. Definitely watch the 1951 film with Alistair Sim. It is generally considered the definitive cinematic version. Also, you might enjoy the Robert Zemeckis CGI version with Jim Carrey.

John Liebling

Cassie, you might want to consider reacting to the 1979 An American Christmas Carol - unique twist performed by Henry Winkler.

Clay F

Favorite Christmas movies = About a Boy, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, Elf. Also like While You Were Sleeping, Edward Scissorhands, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. First watched recently and liked = Miracle on 34th Street (1947), It's a Wonderful Life. Two cheesy ones liked ok = Falling for Christmas (2022) (with Lindsay Lohan), Christmas Inheritance (2017). Love Actually on my watchlist. Don't watch many Christmas movies. Don't watch a Christmas movie every year. Enjoy listening to Christmas music every year in season. I like Christmas. My favorite Christmas movies as kid: -Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) -Frosty the Snowman (1969) -How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) -A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965).

Stick Figure Studios

I still hold out hope that one of these days, Cassie, you will recognize David Warner (Bob Cratchit) in a movie. Maybe if you ever watch TIME BANDITS, THE OMEN it TINE AFTER TIME. Si far you've seen him in TITANIC, TRON, STAR TREK 5, STAR TREK 6 and most recently SCREAM 2. Marvelous actor... may be rest in peace.

Jacob Lunbeck

My personal favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol and definitely in my top 3 Christmas movies! I am not someone who normally cries during movies, but I would be lying if I said I don’t tear up every time I see Scrooge promise to be better while on his knees at the end!

Michael West

This is my favorite version. George C Scott is wonderful. Edward Woodward was the ghost of Christmas present. He may have reminded you of Michael Caine. They have very similar voices and appearance. My most liked Christmas movie has always been Miracle on 34th street. It always reminds me of my childhood. It such a joy watching you react to Christmas movies. You are the very embodiment of the phrase “like a kid at Christmas”😂😂

bgb1975 (Brian)

You gotta watch "The Hospital", Cassie! Probably my favorite George C. Scott role!

bgb1975 (Brian)

Plus one skrillion for "Time Bandits". David Warner was great as Evil. Not to be confused with Dr. Evil. My favorite Terry Gilliam film.

James M

Scott was a strong actor. His distinctive voice I think limited his roles. But for this role having a gruff commanding voice was ideal. He had three great roles that I've seen, Patton, Scrooge and general Turgidson in "Dr Strangelove".

Katie Jackson

I'm an 80's baby, so when I see David Warner the first thing that comes to mind is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. I watched it a million times as a kid. But he was in so much that I grew up watching. Star Trek, Scream 2, Batman The Animated Series, Gargoyles, Spiderman Animated Series, Freakazoid and playing Jor-El in Lois and Clark the new adventures of superman. His voice is also instantly recognizable. This and the Patrick Stewart version is also my favorite Christmas Carol movies. I also have a soft spot for Mickey's Christmas Carol. We'll have to get Cassie to watch that at some point, maybe next Christmas?

Tron

How about The Greatest Showman or A Walk to Remember

Chris Thom

Think PIB has watched a different Christmas Carol every year since starting the channel...? Probably just nostalgia but I think I still feel most connected to the one with the muppets for some reason.

Larry Darrell

Growing up in the 90s myself, next to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, I also knew David Warner most from The Man with Two Brains (1983) and My Best Friend is a Vampire (1987). He was the image of a Scientist/Doctor/Professor in my mind. The older I got, I found some earlier films of his with great notable performances. Morgan! (1966) and The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970).

Larry Darrell

+1 for The Hospital (1971)… also with Bond Girl and Game of Thrones alum, Diana Rigg.

Shad Kanyak

Hard to believe this was a TV movie. The production value is quite impressive for 1984.

Chris Thom

Oh Patton, that's who that is. Thought he looked familiar. Also thought he was that juror that breaks down in tears at the end of 12 Angry Men, but apparently that wasn't him.

Chris Thom

Curious if The Omen is on her nope list.

Chris Thom

Yay, glad that you appreciate The Muppet Christmas Carol too. Was thinking it might be childish to still think it's good (I love it) but I trust your judgement.

Larry Darrell

I think it might be, which is unfortunate. I mean the name of the movie is “The Omen.” Wouldn’t it be better to know what The Omen is before the actual occurrence or revelation of an event that that Omen foretells. ;-)… but seriously.

Larry Darrell

George C. Scott played Juror #3 in the 1997 TV version of 12 Angry Men, originally played by Lee J. Cobb, and with Jack Lemmon taking over for Henry Fonda. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking of… or else you just got lucky. ;-) Just like this A Christmas Carol, 12 Angry Men (1997) is way better than what you might expect from a TV movie. Worth a watch if anyone hasn’t seen it.

Christian Becker

Woe is me — after I couldn’t find Wonder Woman anywhere to stream yesterday, without subscribing to yet another streaming service, this one is the next challenge. The only way I could find on my side of the pond to stream it would have been subscribing to Apple TV and renting it there. But alas, I found a copy on YouTube in 240p. So it seems I’m really here only for the reaction, as it will be rather hard to discern anything in the blur. And to answer the question which movie I usually watch during every holiday season : The Muppet Christmas Carol

Above Average Dave

George C. Scott was a national treasure. Trained as a stage actor, he could dial up or down the intensity as needed. The only tragey in his career is that he didn't get enough great parts. He had his share, but I wish he had more volume like Gene Hackman.

Above Average Dave

George C. Scott was also a decorated U.S. Marine. We saw him on the channel as the state prosecutor in ANATOMY OF A MURDER. There you can see how he is able to modulate that voice and dial down the energy while diluting none of the intensity. Other standout roles include THE HUSTLER (1961). He also is amazing as a subdued, rational and very relatable research scientist in THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN (1973) - a very prescient film if one looks up what the Russians and Chinese are doing today with such experiements. It was one of those roles where Cassie would say, "OK, I want him to be my grandpa" like she did with Sean Connery. Reportedly, he was blacklisted by some high level producers when he refused his Oscar for best actor in PATTON, saying the whole thing was a scam, but he still got work after that, though likely didn't have the pick of plumb roles he should've had after that milestone. I wish I could've seen him on Broadway or in one of the Shakespeare plays he did, but long before my time. Love his film prescence. He owns every scene.

Christian Becker

To answer a question that came up during the reaction. The actor portraying the Ghost of Christmas Present is Edward Woodward. I think Cassie has seen Hot Fuzz; there he was the chief of the neighbourhood watch.

Chris Thom

Amazon Prime usually has the cheapest rentals in best quality. But old movies like this you can often find for free posted on different sites. Can usually find a copy that's at least 480p or whatever it is.

Brent Petty

The Changeling is an underappreciated GCS film. Hoping Cassie reacts to it next Halloween.

Stick Figure Studios

That's the only thing she would know him from because she's never seen THE WICKER MAN. I knew him from the TV show THE EQUALIZER as a kid.

Stick Figure Studios

It's been a few years since I last watched this one, so I forgot how many people were in it. I remembered Scott as Scrooge and David Warner as Cratchit, but Edward Woodward (who I knew as a kid from the original TV show THE EQUALIZER) as the ghost of Christmas present, Roger Rees as nephew Fred, Frank Finlay (from the definitive movie version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS) as Jacob Marley and even Michael Gough (Alfred the butler to Michael Keaton's Batman) Is in it too. A great cast.

K, Zachary

George C Scott was great in the ghost movie the Changeling. From the 70's. Great actor Patton was his best. However we watched the Alister Sim version which I think is better. That 2019 version with Guy Pearce has the best message and shows more of his past. Nothing compares to 2019 A Christmas Carol it's our favorite one. We watch that one 2-3 every season.

N M

Nothing beats the Alistair Sim version of Scrooge.

Christian Becker

To be honest, as soon as she said, “he looks familiar,” I thought the same. A few keystrokes later, I realized that my initial guess was way off, and I thought, well, I might as well post what I found. I recognized him from Hot Fuzz.

Clarence Newman

It could also lead to The Belles of St Trinians with Flash Harry.

Clarence Newman

David Warner was also the Cardassian who tortured Picard in the TNG episode Chain of Command. Great performance.

Clarence Newman

Now you've developed a wee soft spot for George C Scott, Cassie, it's surely time to watch The Hustler (1961). Paulie Newman also stars.

Stick Figure Studios

I forgot that. Not many actors can claim that they've played three different characters in the Star Trek universe.

Clay F

When I saw the aspect ratio, I thought it must be a movie made-for-TV.

Dean Holt

This was a first time watch for me and I thought it was a good version of the story but my favourite I think will always be the Alistair Sim film. 2nd Bill Murray Scrooged, 3rd Patrick Stewart, I just wished his version would have been done as a theatre show as it would have been a little unique. It’s also where he started as a actor.

Clarence Newman

I read Patrick Stewart's autobiography a few months ago. While he was working in British theatre in the 1960s, David Warner was something of a rock star. Patrick found this out when he came out of the back door of a theatre one night to find a gaggle of girls standing there. As soon as he appeared, they rushed at him screaming, ran straight past him and mobbed David Warner.

Dean Holt

One hundred percent agree

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe nothing beats it, but I think some other versions equal it. I realize that it is considered by many to be the definitive cinematic version and it is fantastic, but I think It's age would make it a bit more difficult for younger audiences today to properly appreciate.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, Warner's Hamlet was apparently one of the most fresh and original for the time he did it.

Chitown Livingston

Love George C. Scott. Next Halloween... try The Changeling.

Clay F

Rob Reiner (R.I.P.) movies Cassie has seen: The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, The American President, Misery, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally. Suggested candidates for Rob Reiner poll: --The Wolf of Wallstreet (2013) (No. 32 at PR) --This is Spinal Tap (1984) (No. 105 at PR) --4 episodes (23m/each) of All in the Family* --Primary Colors (1998) --Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) --Sleepless in Seattle (1993) rewatch if she hasn’t seen in years. --LBJ (2016) --Albert Brooks: Defending My Life (2023) *He was “Meathead” in All in the Family (1971-79). That’s how I think of Rob Reiner. I grew up watching that series. As Steve Holton noted in Extra Butter Chat, Rob Reiner used to joke, "When I die, the obituaries will all say, 'Meathead dead'." Reiner felt so typecast and well known as Meathead.

Michael T

"How come he didn't get a warning?" Ha-ha! I never wondered that about Marley, and I've never heard anyone ask it before -- good job, Cassie!

Alexis Vorian

Aghh this version of Tiny Tim crushes my soul, I need more tissues.

Walter

Everyone has a favorite version of A Christmas Carol, and this is mine. I watch it every year. That and Elf, the original Miracle On 34th Street, and Die Hard. Christmas classics!

Chris Thom

Granted, my eyesight isn't that great without my glasses. But GCS and Lee Cobb look exactly the same to me. Like twins.

David Crabtree

Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983) is still my favorite version.

Scott S.

Scrooge A Christmas Carol (1951) with Alastair Sim is my favorite

Bryan Erickson

So, glad you enjoyed this version as much as you did. It’s my favorite Xmas movie. Has been since I was a child.

Stick Figure Studios

I love that one too. A very succinct telling of the Dickens story. It was actually my introduction to the tale.

Stick Figure Studios

I've heard it asked more in recent years. They even addressed it in the 2019 Guy Pearce version.

Catherine LW

I liked this version but it’s missing the housekeeper who got scared by Scrooge’s joy and he gives her a bonus and raise.

Catherine LW

Probably no one (deceased) wanted to do the favor for Jacob Marley.

Catherine LW

I agree. Sims’ Scrooge is perfect and his joy in the end is infectious. I also love his sweet reconciliation with Fred and his wife.

N M

@Catherine LW Yes!! 👍

N M

I also enjoy how frugal Alistair Sim is as Scrooge — asking how much extra bread costs with his soup, and then in the end saying “no more bread” lol

Gray

I really enjoyed this version of A Christmas Carol I thought George C. Scott played an excellent Scrooge and like others said it was really well made for a TV movie. Think i need to catch up with last years Xmas films as I still have The Holdovers and the Patrick Stewart version of this to watch. Getting me more in the spirit that's for sure.

Alex Villarreal

Scrooge McDuck was born to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Mickey’s Christmas Carol, in my humble opinion. But George C. Scott and Michael Caine are my next two favorites. ;)

Chris Thom

Oh man I totally forgot about Scrooge McDuck. And I was obsessed with Duck Tales growing up. Actually some of my very first memories of life.

Scott Nelson

Top 10 Muppets Christmas Carol 1938 Reginald Owen version of “A Christmas Carol” Miracle on 34th Street (1947) It’s a Wonderful Life Home Alone The Santa Clause Die Hard Eloise at Christmastime The Nativity Story Blizzard (directed by Levar Burton of Star Trek)

Flounder

Marley didn’t have any friends in life so he didn’t have anyone to warn him in death.

Flounder

THE SURE THING!!!! It’s the best buddy roadtrip/romcom around. John Cussack is great in it and he and Daphne Zuniga had great on-screen chemistry. It was years until I realized it was a Rob Reiner movie.

Flounder

I first saw this when I was 20. I’m 61 now and nearly died of a heart attack two years ago. The story hits you harder when you get old I think. “Forgive me for the time I have wasted.” This is still the best version of the story i think. George C Scott is an amazing actor; one of the best. SCROOGED is a close second. Cassie, I would so appreciate it if you could react to the movie THE REF with Denis Leary. It’s my favorite dysfunctional Christmas movie and is so funny (in a dark comedy way). I have to watch it every year along with DIE HARD. It’s not Christmas until Hans Gruber plummets from the Nakatomi Plaza…

Darren Harrison

The Ghost of Christmas Present was played by the late Edward Woodward who is best known to U.S. audiences as the original “The Equalizer” in the 1980s T.V. series

John A

This was a great TV of A Christmas Carol. I have not seen this one in many year. Great watching it again and your reaction

Vak

This one brings back memories. I was 15 when it was released. Dad worked for IBM at the time, and IBM splurged on hosting the original American TV airing, so if memory serves he brought home a company-published full-color pamphlet on it before the broadcast; I wish I still had that. Even at 15, the way they did the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come was pure nightmare fuel. The musical screech like somebody torturing a violin; the proportions that were almost, yet very much unlike, human. Brrrrr.

Powers209

I really like Edward Woodward in The Equalizer. His show got me into watching James Bond movies. Those 80s TV shows were awesome. Knight Rider, A-Team, Magnum, The Dukes, and The Equalizer. Plus so many others I don't have the time to name.
