Oh boy, i’m pretty sure as a child i don’t make it too far past the metamorphosis part of this movie! It reminded me so much of ET and the Goonies and that special era. Was not what I was expecting, you were right-not scary scary-but fun scary. Gizmo was so cute!

Gremlins (1984) - Full Reaction - Popcorn In Bed

Watch the full reaction to Gremlins on Popcorn In Bed.

nick bell

You should probably do some Pheobe Cates movies now. Fast times.., Private School (ehh.. probably not) , Drop Dead Fred etc.

Blake Evans

This is a fun one. Will try to watch along tonight while wrapping the last of the presents. Hope this gets you on board for the second film which is much more light hearted. And I honestly think it’s better.

Chris Thom

Always assumed this would make it to the channel eventually, but wasn't sure when. Don't think I've seen this myself in fifteen or more years, so kind of excited to see this again. Always appreciated how creative this movie was. It's very much it's own, unique thing, and I respect that.

Johnny Salinas

Oh My God...watch part 2 pleeeeese !! 😆

Chris Thom

But Star Magic Jackson left to go put some cowboys in Back to the Future 3. Still came out alright though.

Dan M

Bright light! Bright light! I remember when this came out, Gizmo and Stripe were EVERYWHERE when you walked through a mall. What a merchandising blitz it was! This will always be one of my favorite Christmas movies. Can’t wait to see your reaction to it. I’ve already got that theme song playing in my head.

Dan M

Fast Times at Ridgemont High…absolutely!

JohnnyUtah

Finally! This will be watched immediately after work today!

Above Average Dave

And it’s a cardio day! Cassie, you may get a mention in my next novel’s acknowledgements as my cardio trainer who keeps me from turning into the Michelin Man. 🤣

Mike Lemon

Yeah, nothing like a good old statutory rape movie! And abortion too! Fun, fun, fun.

Cole Jennett

I definitely grew up with a Gizmo candy dispenser. My older brother had Stripe

nick bell

It's clearly not for everyone Mike.

Night King01

To think chris columbus wrote this when he was 26. Then wrote goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes right after. Then directed home alone 1 & 2 and Mrs. Doubtfire and of course first two harry potters.

Dan M

I had a couple of t-shirts and a sweatshirt, and at one point I had a Stripe poster on my wall. I had the soundtrack on cassette, and I still have the VHS down in my basement.

Claude Edwards

I watched this movie so much as a kid that now I laugh during Phoebe Cate's Christmas trauma monologue because it is SO EXTREME.

Above Average Dave

Then discovered America, Columbus, Ohio, and Columbus Moving and Storage (sorry, couldn't resist). 🤪

Chris Thom

Yeah, that was quite a run. And I think he kept producer credit on all the Harry Potter movies. Major success story.

Chris Thom

I wasn't born yet when this came out, but some of my first memories are of seeing some of that old merch at the mall.

Chris Thom

Just when you think you might know Cassie, she busts out a hidden talent...the perfectest of perfected Carly impressions ever attempted. Spot on.

Choof

Small Soldiers, which you mentioned in your outro, was directed by the same as this, Joe Dante.

Choof

I also highly recommend Gremlins 2, made by the same director. Its more comedic, silly and has lots of fun with meta jokes

Chris Thom

Oh no way. Didn't realize she was the same actress from Fast Times. A little more buttoned up in this one.

Johnny Bullis

Cass.. as always your reaction had me laughing thru out the whole movie.. "Theyre like little Satan's." Too funny. You should check out the sequel Gremlins 2 the New Batch.. not as good as this but still worth a watch. Upgraded gremlins in NYC. And they even make fun of the rule about dont feed them after midnight. Like ok no food after midnight.. but what time can they start eating the next day? Or what if they ate a bagel with seeds on it and one of the seeds got stuck in their teeth and that seed fell out after midnight and was swallowed.. technically the gremlin didnt eat it after midnight.. anyway. They are actually talking about making a 3rd movie finally .. which I think is in development. Thanks for making me laugh with this one Cassie.

Jake McNulty

A great reaction as always. Loved that the first "jump scare" came not from the film, but from the Grogu toy you brought along. Pity Carly couldn't join in on this one, but still this one was fun to watch. Hope your household feel better soon. And now that you've experienced this you gotta watch the sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch". Significantly tones done the horror elements of the first, and cranks up the comedy to the point of self parody. Also, just so you know, it's not a Christmas film so you can watch it anytime. (I would recommend February, sometime around Lincoln's birthday. Trust me it'll make sense.)

Jake McNulty

Fun fact: "Gremlins" originated from British RAF pilots during World War II. They were an urban legend depicted as goblin-like creatures used to explain mechanical issues and faults with the aircrafts. Also "Mogwai" is a Cantonese word that roughly translate to "demon" or "evil spirit", although of course Gizmo is anything but.

Matthew Lange

Kingston Falls is the same town/set used for Back to the Future

Stick Figure Studios

In the original screenplay, there basically was no Gizmo. The original Mowgwai was also malevolent.

Stick Figure Studios

It's a brilliant scene. As a kid I also found it sad, but now I think it's hysterical. The line "He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit" is where I lose it.

Jake McNulty

Yeah I hear the original script was much darker than the finished film.

Stick Figure Studios

And he's directing the third one. I think Cassie would love YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES.

Chris Thom

I think the drunk guy in the movie was trying to explain it, but it wasn't coming out right.

Chris Thom

Would be curious to hear what her kid thought of both movies.

Chris Thom

I have very vague memories of being very young at Universal Studios and that section of the back lot being dressed for Back to the Future 2.

Shad Kanyak

I’m predicting a slew of Gizmo gifts during the next mail livestream.

Evan

Billy was so cute; very early childhood crush for me.

Mark Vaderr

Now that you've seen Gizmo, Cassie, you know where Grogu, "Stuart" came from.

Walter

Yeah, Billy is an idiot. Day one he gets Gizmo hurt then he spends the next scenes breaking every rule he's given. Dolt. He's lucky the whole town didn't figure out he's responsible for all the troubles that followed.

Mark Vaderr

To be fair, Billy didn't know that Stripe and the other Mogwais had disconnected the clock. Also, it was Pete, not Billy that got Gizmo wet.

Walter

Semantics :) Billy is ultimately responsible, though not directly in some cases.

Walter

"They're watching Snow White. And they love it." is my favorite line in the movie.

Dean Holt

Pointless comment, but my local VHS Rental shop Metro Video had Gizmo on all the video cases and he was also on the sign above the door. Unfortunately already watched it this year (before the poll) as I didn’t think Cassie would be watching it, so might just be a YT watch. As it’s Christmas Eve Eve I’ll be watching Elf tonight and Scrooged tomorrow also not watched Krampus yet so might for that in tomorrow afternoon. Then it’s Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark after Christmas as I always watch them as there was always on TV at Christmas when I was a kid in the 80s. Is there any movies that everyone loves to watch around this time of year, Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas.

James M

Well it's just as I remember it. No real story. No serious acting. Not very Christmassy. Most of the movie is like the car crashes in Blues Brothers. Once the crashes start, that's really all there is and eventually that gets tedious, except here it starts just about halfway through the movie. Poor Phoebe Cates ties very hard to put in a performance with her sad Christmas tale, but it's just so absurd that her father dies in the chimney that her best effort sounds like a poorly told joke. I know I'm being hard on this movie. I would like to say, "Well it's very light but a lot of fun" except I just don't see the fun.

Tara ✨💫

I had a brown and white Lhasa apso when I was a kid and we named him Gizmo

Walter

Bah humbug

Walter

I'm a traditionalist. Miracle of 34th Street (the original). Elf. A Christmas Carol (my preferred version is the George C Scott one). Die Hard. I might have to watch Star Wars and Raiders though since you brought them up and I love them.

Brian's Dog

Joe Dante fan club reporting in.

Dean Holt

Nice 👍🏼 regards to 34th Street I personally prefer the 90s remake, but that was the first one I saw (so that’s probably why) and I tend to watch it mostly every other year.

Keith Brown

Fun fact- Director Joe Dante uses composer Jerry Goldsmith for his movies like Spielberg uses John Williams, Robert Zemeckis uses Alan Silvestri and Tim Burton uses Danny Elfman.

Cole Jennett

Well there was no danger of her falling asleep to this one at least

Chris Thom

Yeah, I do remember there nearly always being some Gizmo or Gremlin representation in almost every video store on the walls.

Chris Thom

The beginning was actually pretty wholesome. And then the ending was kind of a typical horror-lite kind of thing. As a kid I never noticed how insane the chimney storyline was. lol

Stick Figure Studios

I blame the little Chinese kid who sold the Mogwai to Peltzer behind his grandfather's back more than I blame Billy.

Stick Figure Studios

Indeed. It's a much more straightforward horror film in Chris Columbus's original script (with far more gore).

Nick Ireland

"and that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus" hahahahahaha. Haven't seen this since I was 7 years old but it's a lot funnier than I remembered

Stick Figure Studios

"Bizarre" Is an excellent descriptor, Cassie. It is bizarre, but it is bizarre in that way that only a truly inspired, original and inventive film is. One of the best movies of the 1980s IMO. It's an odd combination of genres that really shouldn't work and yet somehow in a kooky way it does. It's part wholesome small town holiday family flick, part dark and violent sci-fi/horror B-movie, part heartwarming "boy and his dog" story, part satirical black comedy, part twisted Muppet movie, part whimsical Steven Spielberg fantasy and part Chuck Jones Warner Brothers cartoon (Jones himself even makes a cameo appearance in Dory's tavern sitting next to Billy: Billy Even calls him "Mr. Jones"). As I've said elsewhere, it's like IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE meets E.T. meets THE WIZARD OF OZ meets THE BLOB or WAR OF THE WORLDS (which even gets a shout out at one point via Rockin' Ricky's "Orson Welles crap" line). I had a feeling you would enjoy it but also just be dumbstruck with its major, and some could even say abrupt, shifts in tone. Your referencing the film SMALL SOLDIERS In your outro is very appropriate as that film was also directed by Joe Dante who did this one. A couple other films of his that you might enjoy are MATINEE with John Goodman and INNERSPACE with Dennis Quaid. So glad that you finally got a chance to see this and I think you would like the sequel as well. It brings back Billy and Kate and the Futtermans (who were originally intended to be killed by the snow plow, but was decided at the last minute to let them live and if you listen to the TV broadcast at the end you can hear the news reporter talking about interviewing Mr Futterman in the hospital) and it is even more self-aware, wacky, satirical and funny. It's less scary, which is why I personally prefer this one, but in some ways it's more ambitious and more subversive. It really leans into the comedy and comes up with some incredibly imaginative gags and set pieces. So glad you got a chance to watch this. Sorry that Carly couldn't join you for it. I was curious as to whether this would be too scary for her and since you said that she could absolutely handle it, I'm hopeful that she gets to experience it at some point. Glad you enjoyed it. As always keep up the good work. Merry Christmas. :-)

Rick Williams

Blast from the past. I don't think I have seen this movie since the 80's. What a wild movie. Yes, Cassie what they needed were guns. Great Reaction.

Coleton B.

Did someone drop their dog whistle? I think it's been found.

Evan

And the kid insulted his grandfather behind his back to boot ("Who cares what he says? He's crazy")

Mike Gallagher

Fun Fact: Phoebe Cates (Kate), is married to Otto from A Fish Called Wanda. They've been married for 36 years. So I guess he was not... DISAPPOINTED.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, it's a marvelous scene because a kid you find it incredibly sad, but as a grown-up you realize how funny it is.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, the rules if you think about them really make no sense, which should signal to the audience that we're not in the real world here but in some kind of twisted fairy tale. There's some funny self-aware dialogue in the sequel making fun of the no food after midnight rule.

Ace Degenerate

Nobody asked, but my favorite Joe Dante movie is Innerspace.

Scott Macaulay

Awesome. Saving this for Christmas Eve!! I thought I was ahead of the curve this year and was all proud of myself yet somehow still end up frantically running around looking for certain last minute items!! 🤣. Merry Christmas all!!!

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, even if he was made aware at some point of the consequences of breaking the rules with the Mogwai, he clearly didn't believe them. I wouldn't be surprised if he was never even told what would happen. He seems pretty nonchalant about Gizmo's existence (the way he rests his head on his hand when he talks about how Gizmo "sings sometimes" demonstrates a familiarity and even perhaps boredom with this creature).

Rick Williams

Yes. And you have to pay attention because the gremlins are acting many different scenes. Spielberg had fun.

Clay F

In 1984, I was 21, in college, and living w/my future wife - had zero interest to watch Gremlins (1984). Fast forward 40+ years later, today I watched Gremlins (1984) for the first time (along with your reaction). Phoebe Cates is cute. Skip Gremlins 2. 1984 Remember being blown away by The Killing Fields (1984) (released early 1985). So fixated with what had happened in Cambodia and the legal wranglings w/Pol Pot. Liked Karate Kid (1984), Amadeus (1984), Birdy (1984). Lked The Burning Bed (1984) ok. Laughed my ass off in disgust at Red Dawn (1984). Such a let down.

ROBERT CLARK

Fun fact. The scene where you see Billy running past the cinema is displaying "A Boy's Life" which is a nod to Steven Spielberg's very first ever film. Also I found this film to be a horror with an element of comedy while the 2nd film was a comedy film with moments of horror.

Cole Jennett

Skip Gremlins 2? You hadn’t seen the first one but you have an opinion on the second? Personally I’m indifferent, but that’s the opposite I’m seeing from the comments.🤷‍♂️

Mojo One Thousand

You're right Cassie, they were calling in the National Guard... however they were preparing to hose them down, so it wasn't going to end well if that happened. "Small Soldiers" is the movie with the toys referenced in the outro, "Toy Soldiers" is a movie about school students being taken hostage in their school with Sean Astin, Wil Wheaton, and Louis Gossett Jr... I think it would be worth a look and has be suggested previously.

Clay F

True, I haven't formed my own opinion by watching Gremlins 2, but do have the foreshadowing of the first Gremlins and the worst review data of Gremlins 2, and that I don't think Cassie that taken with Gremlins (1984). Spare her. Also in line with my no sequels rule. Why consume a coveted reaction slot with Gremlins 2 (IMDb 6.5, RT Audience 59%) -- when she did not seem blown away by Gremlins 1? Watch 1:45:30-1:46:00 (silence) of her reaction as the movie ended. There was no exclamation of what a great movie, or that she loved it. She has no nostalgia. "It was bizarre. It was kind of funny. Billy was so cute."

Above Average Dave

Which reminds me - Cassie, never watch SOPHIE’S CHOICE. Brilliant movie but it will break you.

YodatheHobbit

I also expected..... more, after it really did scare me as a kid. I watched it for the first real time as an adult last year and didn't like it much. I guess I must've even been pretty bored because I think I fell asleep 2/3s the way through, watching after midnight. I will say though that I enjoyed it a bit more the 2nd time due to being more awake noticing all the individual antics and references in the bar and theater and mall the gremlins made, plus all the Montgomery Ward toys nostalgia. I can remember being 3 or 4 and going to Ward with my parents as a kid. I think they got a new washing machine, and I got a stuffed animal while there. I will say though, that the teen characters in the movie have to be some of the most characterless characters I've ever seen in a movie. Other than her story about her father, the most "blank page" kind of teens.

Brian's Dog

On this re-watch for the first time I noticed the time machine at the inventors convention disappears when the Dad is on the phone with the Mom.

James M

I really must take issue with "humbug". I *love a good Christmas movie. This is not a good Christmas movie because it's not a good movie.

Gray

Even weirder than what I remember as a kid haha, fair play to Billy's mum killing three Gremlins while Billy slowly jogs home and it's a good thing he got Gizmo early as it would have totally trumped the plastic robot toy he was getting for Xmas lol. Also I really miss practical effects wish more movies would go back to that style.

Stick Figure Studios

A BOY'S LIFE was actually the original working title for E.T. The marquee also mentions a film called WATCH THE SKIES. That was the original working title of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. In the DVD commentary track Joe Dante says he put them there just to make Steven happy when he would watch dailies.

Stick Figure Studios

Somehow, Clay, I had a feeling this just wasn't going to be your kind of movie.

Stick Figure Studios

It shows that even the most malevolent and psychopathic creatures can appreciate Walt Disney's SNOW WHITE.

Stick Figure Studios

Some fun trivia for the film. The photos of her late husband that Mrs. Deagle has on display in her home are of actor Edward Arnold who frequently played a villain in Frank Capra movies like MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON and MEET JOHN DOE. The guy who rides by on the motorized vehicle when Rand Peltzer is on the phone at the inventors convention is Steven Spielberg. The man behind him is composer Jerry Goldsmith and the giant robot you see is Robbie the Robot who first appeared in the Sci-Fi classic FORBIDDEN PLANET and would make cameo appearances throughout the years in various films and even on television (including an episode of COLUMBO). Incidentally, if you look In the background of those two shots you'll see a man sitting in and starting up the old time machine from the George Pal film starring Rod Taylor. When it cuts back to him it's gone leaving only smoke in its place in a couple people are looking around for it. I love that gag. Another fun background gag is the man that Billy calls Mr Jones in dory's tavern is legendary Warner Brothers animator Chuck Jones. Playing on the TV in the bar is one of his own cartoons. Looking at the screen he shakes his head and disgust gets up and walks out. There are various references to other Spielberg films throughout. Someone else here already mentioned the two movie titles on the marquee, but you can also see an ET doll in the department store and one gremlin says "phone home, caca" When he cuts the phone line in Billy's house.

Stick Figure Studios

Billy is not slowly jogging All the way home. When he is seen leaving the school he's running as fast as he can. The next time we see him he's almost home which means he's probably run at least a couple miles. He's just tired. I like that little touch of realism.

Stick Figure Studios

You picked up on that information from the broadcast. Good job. Yeah, they were intending to use the fire hoses on them which is a terrible idea.

Stick Figure Studios

It is truly one of the most inventive, imaginative, unique, memorable and subversive films of the 1980s.

Chris Thom

Saw a really weird one the other day where an old spaceship with strange aliens was underground behind his house. Joe Dante definitely had his own vibe. Blanking on what it was called, but it was very unique.

Barry

FYI, Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom are why the MPAA created the PG-13 rating in the U.S. Too many parents complaining about these two PG rated films prompted them to create a rating between PG and R. The first movie to be release with the PG-13 rating was Red Dawn (1984).

Chris Thom

Mrs. Deagle definitely felt like an amalgamation of the wicked witch of Oz, the shady guy from It's a wonderful life, and Ebeneezer Scrooge.

Chris Thom

That's a neat tidbit. My first thought was that Leo DiCaprio, Robert Deniro movie. But that probably came out quite a bit later.

Stick Figure Studios

Yup. She travels with their own theme like Myra gulch (and even wants to destroy the hero's dog), she owns half the town like Mr Potter and she clearly hates Christmas like Ebenezer Scrooge. She's a wonderful character and Polly Holiday (God rest her soul because she just passed away a few months ago) plays it beautifully. While on that subject of the performances, I really don't understand the other people in this thread who talk about how the acting in this movie is bad. I think they're nuts. I think the acting in this movie, for the kind of movie that it is, is great. It's a story filled with absurd, ridiculous and fantastical things, but nobody ever interacts with those things (or with each other) in an unbelievable manner. They can still play it broadly but honestly.

Brent Petty

54:55 - "Please don't hurt his mom!" His mom isn't locked in the house with gremlins, the gremlins are locked in the house with his mom.

Keith Jacobsen

Gremlins really used to be mythological creatures imagined in the early 20th century, causing unexplained malfunctions mostly around aircraft. PS You REALLY should watch Gremlins 2: The New Batch, arguably better, but higher budget, and MUCH funnier, imo.

Milton Reduxed

Jen Murray was scheduled to watch Innerspace last week but couldn't through illness in the family, not happening this week either 😭

Richard Maurer

Clay - Gremlins is a iconic movie, regardless of Cassie’s reaction to it. With all the syrupy-sweet kids movies that plagued the 80’s, this is the one movie that took that formula and gave it a dark edge. And having just watched again after many years, it still holds up.

Richard Maurer

Joe Dante had fun. Spielberg helped but it was Dante’s movie. He brought the edginess that Spielberg never had.

Richard Maurer

James - you might add an imo to that comment. For instance I would say this is one of the better movies of the 80’s - imo.

Richard Maurer

Spielberg “Spielberged” it. I wouldn’t mind a remake - if they went with the original horror script. No need to otherwise.

Richard Maurer

Cassie: “She must have some Christmas trauma!” Lol, oh yeah, you could say that.

Clay F

As for Gremlins (1984), the verdict is still out for me - still processing. In researching for this first watch at age 62, I read much positive, and then liked aspects when I did the first watch today. Keep in mind -- I had no nostalgia -- watching for the first time at 62 -- and previously never paying attention, e.g., never watched a trailer or even thought about it. Richard -- are you saying that Gremlins 2 is one of the rare exceptions (e.g., GF2, Aliens) to the no sequels rule? IMDb 8.4, RT Audience 94% -- Aliens (1986) IMDb 9.0, RT Audience 97% -- GF2 (1974) [AFI Top 100] IMDb 6.5, RT Audience 59% -- Gremlins 2

Stick Figure Studios

Not necessarily better, but definitely funnier as it really leans into the comedy. I hope she watches it.

Stick Figure Studios

If they and made the movie the way Chris Columbus wrote the original screenplay, mom would not have survived.

Tyler Hale

Next time: Gremlins 2

Clay F

Glad to hear in the Extra Butter Live this evening (Rudolph live watch along) that apparently GoT is your next watch?

Brian McGovern

"Well this is a cute town" Having just rewatched BTTF recently, I recognised it as the Universal backlot. Saw the clock tower, the theatre at the end of the street where Marty went back to the present. The redressed cafe.

Brian McGovern

I just think I recognised the old guy sitting next to Billy when he showed the picture of the dragon lady. I think that was Chuck Jones who directed A LOT of the Looney Tunes cartoons back in the 50s and 60s.

Jacob King

Small Soldiers is also a Joe Dante film. The other one of his films you’ve done on the channel is The Burbs. He’s one of the nicer Hollywood directors, a guy who makes movies because he loves them. You really should see Gremlins 2 which is his masterpiece.

Jacob King

It’s the actual Time Machine from the 1960 movie adaptation of The Time Machine.

Richard Maurer

I don’t let nostalgia color my view of movies. I can’t tell you how many 80’s films that I enjoyed in my twenties that have been a disappointment to me on more current rewatches. But this movie held up for me. As for Gremlins 2, I’m not as big a fan as some here, but if a reaction to it came up on a sequels poll I’d be much more likely to to vote for it than the usual crap sequels we’re offered. Plus it has Christopher Lee.

Mike Lemon

Dog whistle??? What?

Clay F

Good repy. Makes sense.

Above Average Dave

Dang - was hoping for THE BISHOP’S WIFE. Cassie will LOVE.

Darren Harrison

Phoebe Cates was a major sex symbol of the early to mid 1980s on TV and movies but largely retired from public life after marrying Kevin Kline. It’s been about 20 years since I last watched this and this time I recognized the deputy was the heavy in “Beverly Hills Cop” and of course Rosewood (from BHC was the jerk bank manager. When this movie came out in the UK it got a AA certificate (an old rating that no longer exists but barred anyone under 14). I heard they had to make cuts to avoid an X certificate (no one under 18). I was 13 when it came out so didn’t get to see it in the cinema.

Stephen Dias

As I recall, the sequel has more diverse Gremlins. I also remember it being funnier and less scary, but it's been years since I've seen it.

Stick Figure Studios

You remember correctly. The The design both of the Gremlins and of Gizmo are a bit different. The gremlins are slightly larger and they actually take on various forms too. You're also correct about it being funnier. It definitely leans into the comedy aspects. It's a riot of a film.

Stick Figure Studios

You are correct. That's why Billy calls him "Mr Jones." If you look in the background of the shot when Kate is serving Gerald and Billy, you can see Chuck Jones shaking his head and disgust at one of his old Warner Bros cartoons playing on the television before he walks off.

John A

The 80's always had the fun movies like Gremlins. The guys all loved Phoebe Cates (Kate) at the time. But Kate's story about her father, I can not stop laughing about it. How does her father even fit in the chimney? that is one of the craziest tragic stories ever. hahaha

Chris Thom

Would bet your oldest might enjoy Who Framed Roger Rabbit? as well. Maybe the other kids, too, and their parents. But not totally sure. Definitely one of the other unique 80's classics, along with this one. Some movies just had to be made in the 80's with that odd charm.

Mario Serra

I am sure someone else already mentioned it but you do need to watch Gremlins 2 just because it is even more absurd that the first but in the best way haha

fastecp1

Always a fun watch.

MrKsummer7

Did anyone catch the Time Machine gag happing in the background at the inventors convention?

Clarence Newman

No, but I feel this could be rectified with a Time Machine reaction.

Richard Maurer

Yes I caught it, along with more obvious Robbie the Robot spouting his lines from Forbidden Planet.

Richard Maurer

I know it sounds crazy but if you google it people die from getting stuck it chimneys fairly often, although it’s mostly attempted burglaries, and they die from getting stuck and asphyxiating, not breaking their neck like her father did.

Eric

Yep. There's multiple funny references to other movies. This one was of course a reference to H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. At the beginning we obviously see a billboard referencing Indiana Jones. And a Boy's Life and Watch the Skies, the supposed movies playing at the movie theater were the working titles for E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. All Spielberg movies. Also at the convention we see Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. There's other references too. And a cameo from Steven Spielberg himself at the convention. Oh, and the square seen in Kingston Falls is of course the same square we see in Hill Valley in Back to the Future.

Eric

The deputy is also Mike from Breaking Bad.

Milton Reduxed

Billy's dad was the villain of the piece—a traveling snake oil salesman who finagled the mogwai from a 12 year old boy and would have exploited them for financial gain to the detriment of the entire country

Milton Reduxed

Watching this time was the first occasion I noticed the gremlin Billy's mum knifed on the kitchen counter continuing to writhe in the background while she dispatched the next in the microwave

John A

that is crazy. I will look it up. but sound like those were the dumbest burglaries. Thanks

Cole Jennett

Incorrect. Cassie didn’t want her to possibly catch the sickness going around the house.

Richard Maurer

I can’t argue with your interpretation. I’ve always thought his family needed to stage an intervention - Dad, your inventions suck, it’s time for you to get a real job before the family ends up broke.

KevinfromSaskabush

when the tractor driver first mentions gremlins, it's from him being a ww2 vet. gremlins are what soldiers used to blame mechanical malfunctions on.

Stick Figure Studios

The Chinese boy who sells three Mogwai behind his grandfather's back is also not entirely innocent.

Stick Figure Studios

I love that background gag. Joe Dante often feels his frame with hilarious in jokes and references and site gags. In dory's tavern, Chuck Jones is reacting to one of his old Warner Brothers cartoons on the television, shaking his head and disgust and walking away. Also in the inventors convention scene you can see Jerry Goldsmith as well as Steven Spielberg and Robbie the robot.

Chris Thom

Work for a property management, and was at a unit today with a big wood cut out of a painted Gremlin. Probably four feet tall. Wild that this weird little movie still has some cultural cache 40 years later. Really is quite unique.

Chris Thom

Always wondered if that was a reference to something. Have never seen Forbidden Planet but felt like that might be something retro.

Vincent Vega

I loved this film as a kid. You're right, Carly couldve handled that, perhaps you can get her to watch it and you can react together to Gremlins 2: The New Batch (which imo, is one of those rare cases of the sequel being better than the original. Happy new year chick

Duckie

I loved this as a kid. It has always been a favorite, and I think it's interesting that the set for Kingston Falls was the same set they used for Hill Valley in Back to the Future a year later.
