“HAVE A HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS” Hope you all had a good day, got something you wanted and that your hearts and bellies are full. This was perfect for right before Christmas-so (mostly) sweet and a fun reminder of this era. It was fun to talk to my in laws and grandma today about their memories of this movie and other Rankin Bass!

Big Lazy Dragon

This movie has always been a part of my childhood. Quite literally in fact; it came out the same year I was born. So this movie will always have a special place in my heart.

Clay F

Part of my childhood.

Big Lazy Dragon

A little fun fact: when CBS began airing reruns of the movie in 1965, they replaced the song 'We're a Couple of Misfits' with a new song 'Fame & Fortune'. This edit remained until 1998 when the original song was restored. The fate of the misfit toys was left unresolved in the original 1964 broadcast. According to Jules Bass, viewers wrote letters wanting to know what happened to the toys, so the studio shot additional footage showing Santa stopping at the island to pick them up, and the scene was added for the 1965 rebroadcast.

Big Lazy Dragon

"What's wrong with the dolly?" That's actually a question that's been floating around for years, as the script never gave any indication as to why the dolly was on the island. When asked by a historian, Arthur Rankin explained that "the doll had been cast off by her owner & was clinically depressed, and there was no Prozac back then."

Mike Lemon

I had to look it up, and I don't think I have ever heard "Fame and Fortune" until today. I wonder if some stations didn't replace "We're a Couple of Misfits"?

Big Lazy Dragon

The version with 'Fame & Fortune' is the one I grew up with. I was born the same year this came out, so once I was old enough to start remembering things, the version with 'F&F' is the one that was cemented into my memory. I wasn't even aware of the original song until it was restored in 1998.

Chris

That's strange, because I was born in 1966, and I've NEVER heard the Fame and Fortune version!

Big Lazy Dragon

"Who's Jackie Gleason!" Cassie is definitely too young to remember that Jackie Gleason played bus driver Ralph Kramden in the 1950's sitcom 'The Honeymooners', but she should remember him as Sheriff Buford T. Justice (of Texas) in the 1977 Burt Reynolds comedy 'Smokey & the Bandit', which she watched last year.

Larry Dennis

For a truly heart warming family Christmas special, may I suggest the 1970 version of "Santa Claus is coming to town"? It's a classic Rankin/Bass production.

JohnnyUtah

They don't make them like they used to.

Katie Jackson

She reacted to Santa Claus Is Coming To Town last year!

HercEl

In stories characters have to go through an arc, they don't always start out as the characters we know them as they have to grow, make mistakes, and become better versions of themselves. Also wanting Hermey to sound more like an elf isn't all that different than Donner hiding Rudolph's nose or the head Elf wanting him to act more like an elf.

Larry Dennis

Thank you for the information. I hope in the future that a new and easily searcable database becomes fully developed and available to all of her patreons. To those of us, particularly us senior citizens that can't afford the extra butter tier, such a database would be a welcomed and enjoyable addition to this channel. Once again, thanks for the info.

Hubbs30

this was always my favorite growing up. thank you for reminding me and bringing back memories of watching it with my family

Dan M

It isn’t Christmas to me without one of the Rankin and Bass stop motion classics being seen at least once during the season. Rudolph, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, and The Year Without a Santa Clause being seen back to back to back in one night is a must for me. And to me, Burl Ives’ version of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer will never be topped.

Keith Brown

The movie "ELF" does a little nod salute to the Rankin/Bass animation . You will know it when you watch "ELF" the next time.

Big Lazy Dragon

Don't forget that Frosty the Snowman (1969) is also a Rankin/Bass classic, although that one is pure animation, not stop action.

Cole Jennett

It should not be a surprise that she doesn’t remember the actors name from a movie she saw once.

Dorsalfinsky

We’d spend entire afternoons in the 70s as 10 year olds coming up with stupid, often dirty lyrics to Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, like “Had a very shiny butt.” But if you lived somewhere where WGN’s signal reached from the 50s to mid 80s, the Manum Opus of the Holiday Season was Suzy Snowflake and Hardrock, CoCo and Joe. God bless you, Ray Rayner.

Clarence Newman

Would have wished you all a Merry Christmas yesterday, but had a full-on lurgy, was very close to death and getting precious little sympathy from my Wifey. She still refuses to admit that we men get the flu way worse than you appallingly robust females. Woke up feeling much better this morning, so I'm prepared to impart way more than yesterday's 'bah humbugs'. Basically, I love yuz. I hope you're all having a wonderful Christmas and that you appreciate how far I've come back from the brink to deliver this message. The menfolk here know what I mean.

David Cansler

One of the all time great Christmas shows!!

Above Average Dave

You have the strength of 10 men, Clarence. Get well soon.

Clay F

A patron of any tier can use the 'search posts' box (field) to the above right. Type in "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and hit return.

Chris Thom

Silver and Gold has been stuck in my head for the past couple of days. Never quite sure which song will win out for King Ear Worm Status, but it's apparently that one. Fun movie...had actually never seen it all in entirety. Just clips. Happy Holidays everyone! Day after Christmas is weirdly my favorite part since childhood.

Chris Thom

According to them, men are just extra dramatic about sick and pain. But what the f-- do they know bout it. Lol

Chris Thom

This whole movie reminds me of Will Ferrell so much. Feel like he crafted his career on it somehow.

Clay F

She doesn't remember details b/c she has reacted to hundreds of movies -- seeing each only once.

Larry Darrell

There are some of us that do expect Cassie to retain some information about the movies she watches, and for them to not be in one ear and out the other. I’ve suggested somewhere else before, that it would be cool if she kept a journal or diary about her new film experiences. Just a short paragraph or so detailing her feelings on the films, and logging film dates, actor/director/writer names. Writing things down helps one to remember. Reading back over the journal from time to time helps remembering. (If someone truly had a growing interest in film, this could be a good idea.)

Clarence Newman

That's true, and we have hard data to back it up. For example, Cassie has done about 150 reactions this year, was sick for at least 143 of them and we only noticed 11 times. Appallingly robust, I tell you.

Doc Larry/old geezer

Who would’ve guessed this old geezer—who watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer when it first aired on television on December 6, 1964—would enjoy it just as much more than 50 years later? Watching it again with Cassie, hands down one of the best reactors on the internet, made it an absolute joy. Great job, Cassie. The Extra Butter Live was a blast, and experiencing it together during the actual airing window made it even more special. For anyone wondering, it was created using stop-motion animation, specifically the classic Rankin/Bass “Animagic” style that defined so many holiday favorites. Timeless storytelling, timeless music, and proof that some things only get better when shared across generations.

Chris Thom

Cute voice for a murdering little psycho. Lol

Clay F

She saw him in 'The Honeymooners' briefly on the TV in Back to the Future.

Mike Lemon

Add alcohol and you have perfectly described Tenma.

Flounder

I just noticed Cassie hasn’t reacted to the movie Sully. Directed by Clint Eastwood, Starts Tom Hanks. I think everyone on the channel would love to see Cassie’s reaction to this heroic pilot’s story. It would be a real treat for the new year.

Flounder

Thanks so much for the update! Everybody seems to have a different method to keep track of them. I asked a chatbot and doesn’t seem to know about her letterboxd account either.

Big Lazy Dragon

I grew up in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square/Belmont-Cragin neighborhoods of Chicago, and my weekday mornings were spent watching Ray Raynor, Bozo Circus & Romper Room, so I remember those Christmas shorts quite vividly. In fact, there's been times I found it nearly impossible to get the chorus of 'Hardrock & Coco & Joe' out of my head. Those were special times.

Chris Thom

It's hard to keep track of everything she has seen. But she mentions quite a few in LIVE chats. If you post them here first, there's usually someone in the comments who can confirm whether she's seen it for the channel, or off-channel. The mods often have the most info: Colton, Kaielle, Dave, etc.

Keith Brown

There is a funny YouTube Meme where they take the Elves' workshop scene and play the sound of the Sargent chewing out his men in "Full Metal Jacket" over it.

Larry Dennis

Thanks Clay; but, I would still like to see a more polished and robust database to peruse the videos available, rather than relying on a simple "Search" bar.

Clarence Newman

"Flight" with Denzel could be an alternate along the same lines. She hasn't seen that.

Clay F

+1 for Flight. To check whether she has seen a movie I use the following: 1. www.popcornrequests.com (takes about 15 seconds) 2. Her Letterboxd

Stephen Dias

OMG. When my son was little, he wanted to watch this movie all year long. We even had a routine: after I put him in his car seat, we'd recreate the scene with "okay, Rudolph, full power!" He's in his 30's now, but it all came back as I was watching this.

Chris Thom

Actually a really poignant story. It's got some depth to it. But also the music and mythical creatures are just fun.

Chris Thom

Yeah but she said herself that the letterbox wasn't accurate.

Cole Jennett

In my very best Austin Powers voice “Ouch Chris…very ouch!”

Jim at Super Powered Design

I was born in 1964, just 5 years after special came out. My dad is 30 years older than me. Unfortunately he passed 9 years ago, but it was fun to talk to him about how he grew up without Rudolph. He saw this new tradition actually give birth at the age of 34, and how it became a tradition for his kids growing up.

Above Average Dave

This vital documentary also reminds us that, lurking inside every dentist is a sadomachistic elf who is eager to pull the teeth from Bumbles and others without employing anesthesia and using non-sterile implements.

Patrick Lueger

My friends, I need your help, please. I would like to watch the German film ‘Er ist wieder da’ (He's Back) with you here. It's about Hitler waking up in present-day Berlin. He travels through the country and becomes popular again. Not everything is acted. The film is officially a comedy, but it is also very multi-layered and thought-provoking. You will definitely enjoy it, and it's something different. Will you help me promote the film? I'm sorry for writing about it in this chat, but I don't know how else to do it :) Thank you for your help. Greetings from Germany.

Cole Jennett

Everyone has a movie that they want her to watch. It will take winning a poll, or you submitting a pick-a-flick and winning to have it watched. Especially if it’s obscure like this seems to be

Andrew Buel

For the record, I always knew about the 'interruptions' in Rudolph, but the final line was "Like George Washington!" With or without, a fun song and a great special to watch at Christmastime. Merry (belated) Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
