John Armbruster

All of them. Just watch all of them 🖖🏻

Shad Kanyak

The Day the Earth Stood Still was my gateway to old films back in the mid-90’s. It’s still one of my favorites.

Bill Maurer

"The Thing from Another World". She's seen the remake, now it's time for the original. It's a classic and great movie all on its own

Rainbow Dash

I’d actually love it if you watched the 2002 version of the movie The Time Machine.

Ronnie

Also, check out the original broadcast from 1938 of the war of the worlds. Good base for movie. It's on you tube with Orson wells.

Anthony Carlson

I voted for all of them! May the one with the most votes win!

Richard Maurer

I voted for more of these than I normally do on multiple choice polls. I usually do 3 - 4 but I’ve done 7 this time.

Cliff Endicott

The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers is fantastic. It's often suggested that the whole thing is an allegory for the rise of communism, but I thinks it's just a great sci-fi story.

Kal Zakath

A TON of solid and great movies here! Love the early sci-fi period. Really hoping one of the 3 I voted for win! Hoping that Forbidden Planet gets enough love to either win or at least be popular enough that Cassie will watch it due to a great showing here - It's one of the two I keep entering in the Pick-A-Flick and would love to not have to agonize over which one I choose for the month!

Robert Jewell

Well, I picked what I think are 4 of the best sci-fi films of that era hoping more than one will win. They're super intelligent with lots of human interest. Great choices, Cassie, however you chose them.

Robert Baldino

Renew! Renew! Logan's Run is my favorite of this bunch. Silent Running is really cool, too, and an interesting film making bridge to what came later with Star Wars. I do love The Day the Earth Stood Still, but there's not actually a lot of "Sci-Fi" in that movie. And honestly, there are better versions of War of the Worlds, Body Snatchers, and The Time Machine.

René Ferland

What a great poll! Any of these movies will be fun to watch with Cassie. :-)

MikeLL

Oh, as much as I put down entire genres of films in the Pollception post comments (didn’t mean it, my comment just got away from me, honest) I think this is going to be one very lively debate over these great films and lead to a fantastic watch! I voted for Invasion of the Body Snatchers and War of the Worlds. It is wild that Cassie has seen the Tom Cruise version of that one.

Godzilla Jones

No bad choices here, but it's a pity Fantastic Voyage isn't getting more love. I've always had a soft spot for that one. James Cameron is producing a remake, I hear.

Tim Weaver

I don't know if u have seen innerspace (1987) with Dennis Quaid & Martin Short so went Fantastic Voyage

keoma songs

I like a lot of these movies, and like them a lot .... But I am keeping my vote to SILENT RUNNING (1972) For anyone who hasn't watched it yet, it's been called 'Wall-E for Grown-Ups'. Incredible performance by Bruce Dern. Directed by the man who helped create the special effects for 2001. It's a movie that can incur it's own costs on the viewer, I pay it gladly.

MikeLL

It would be good to see Cameron make anything other than another Avatar.

Robert Jewell

Oh, and Cassie, because you have one particular film on your list, can you put 1979's Time After Time on the other list? They'd make a brilliant double feature. And Time After Time was written and directed by the fellow who directed The Wrath of Khan.

Ian A

Oh man. This is a stacked list but went with my heart with The Day the Earth Stood Still. Good luck everyone. I'd be happy with any of these.

Collar City Guy

Gort: klaatu barada nikto! The Day the Earth Stood Still all day long!

Garrett Wilson

It has to be Forbidden Planet. Combined sci-fi with Shakespeare. Was the first sci- film to depict FTL travel, first to use an entirely electronic musical score. Was a big inspiration for Star Trek. Star Wars took inspiration from it, and GOT author George Martin calls it his favorite sci-fi film.

keoma songs

Hopefully the remake with George Clooney from 2002 is on the post 1980 poll

2-Can

My job had experimented with a networked software program that required everyone in the company to log our time working on different projects into the system. Besides being a royal pain, I found it hilarious that the program was called KRONOS - which just so happened to be the name of a 50s movie about an alien robot that came to earth in order to drain all of our energy. We all hated the record-keeping requirement and it was just a bad thing for morale at the time. I was laughing as I described this movie one of our finance mangers who then angrily railed that I must have a lot of time on my hands - I laughed harder when I realized it was her idea to trial the software. If you want a laugh, I saw the movie was on YT. (this post was NOT inspired by The Time Machine - for which I have no ill will)

MrKsummer7

I say do a marathon and watch them all. I’m curious to see Cassie’s reaction when they’re about to blow up the outskirts of Los Angeles with an atomic bomb. Everyone’s on pins and needles except a girl who walks into the general staff like it’s no big deal, serving coffee and donuts.

Dan M

It would be interesting to see how you compare The Thing From Another World And War of the Worlds with their more contemporary versions that you’ve seen on the channel…The Thing with Kurt Russell and War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. But I can’t pass up on two classics, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Christian Becker

The list looks good so far! But the poll can only be about which one Cassie is going to watch first, right, right? 🙂 My vote has to go to Forbidden Planet, but I could have checked every other box as well.

YodatheHobbit

I think I've seen at most 2 of these. No clue what the plots of most of them are, but I'm interested in finally seeing more old sci-fi, although I've heard their of titles for the past 20 years at least. Some of them I don't think I knew were sci fi. And yay for more Robin Williams. Jack might be fun. Not one of his best films, but I felt like I could relate, me wanting to stay a kid in 1996 but staring to become an adult and me not wanting adults to act like adults, smoking, drinking etc. I just thought it was disgusting stuff. Kind of still do. I remember it feeling harder to have fun with your parents when you were turning 11. I just rewatched the trailer, and it was reminded it's a Coppola movie, wow.

Happy Hanukkah

Kudos for the poster. I fear it might be too late for suggestions for the post-1980 poll, but nonetheless: Given the poll category. Given that we are currently in the middle of reactions to Justice League. Given Justice League features (a not particularly recognizable) David Thewlis (as Ares). Given that in his earlier days, Thewlis had the privilege and ineffable pleasure of collaborating on a movie with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. Given that we have entered the month of February. It is February 2026, and I hereby advocate for *that* version of The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). [#013] Dedicated to Richard Maurer.

John Liebling

Robin Williams poll two great movies would be Bicentennial Man and Awakenings.

John Liebling

The two main actors were acting in Star Trek VI and Generations.

keoma songs

Always loved Logan's Run. As good a vehicle for a Michael York as there ever was next to the Austin Powers movies where he played Basil Exposition. And of course co-starring the lovely Jenny Agutter, still breaking hearts in Captain America: the Winter Soldier as the disguise worn by Black Widow.

Kristin

It won't win, but Silent Running is a good film. It doesn't get the praise it deserves.

Freja Corbinne

who could ever forget the classic Fahheritt 451

Stick Figure Studios

CITIZEN KANE was one of my five trivia night submissions. By golly, we will introduce Cassie to Orson Welles somehow.

Kristin

I mostly said it!!

Stick Figure Studios

Looking forward to the Robin Williams poll. Hopefully another one of my five picks (THE FISHER KING) will win it.

John

A poll that goes straight to my heart! I love '50s Sci-Fi!

MrKsummer7

BTW, how did these gems not make the list? When Worlds Collide (1951), The Blob (1958). Soylent Green (1973), Westworld (1973), Rollerball (1975), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), Planet of the Vampires (1965)

Steven Perez

I've seen nearly all of these. Any of these would make a fine reaction. This is an excellent list.

Alex Leach

Also ‘The Day the Earth Caught Fire’.

Paul Stelter

SECONDS isn't well-known, but it's brilliant and creepy (and from the director of THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) so hopefully shows up on a future poll. Can never go wrong with DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL or WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Richard Maurer

Agreed. I voted for it but it already looks like it doesn’t have a chance.

Happy Hanukkah

It's been a while since I've seen Moscow on the Hudson (1984).

Richard Maurer

Not happening. Not now, not ever. Just forget about it, it’s over before it even begins. Nope.

keoma songs

SECONDS is an unusually interesting movie that has innovative camera work and is bizarrely meta in a way that wouldn't be matched for possibly decades. Lots of layers.

Happy Hanukkah

"I fear it might be too late for suggestions" "Praise the Lord!" exclaims Richard Maurer. :-) [ADDED: posted before seeing RM's reply.]

Richard Maurer

Return of the Jedi had 3 aliens called Klaatu, Barada, and Nikto.

bknsty14

Fahrenheit 451 is excellent

Vak

Good poll. Though I'm kind of wishing that "Metropolis" had made the list. It has MAJOR problems by modern standards, but a lot of the special effects still surprisingly hold up - they must have looked absolutely magical at the time - and some of the visuals are downright tech-terrifying (or at least creepy), even to modern eyes. Even though the story itself is paper-thin - like most silent films, even longer ones, it almost had to be - there are a couple of fascinating ideas in there.

Robert Jewell

Oh, true! And the heroine was in Back to the Future Part III. I think Cassie would love it although I just saw the after 1980 poll and it's not on there. But I recommended Time After Time and The Time Machine after she'd watched it so how the heck do I get Cassie to see them?

Richard Maurer

Clarence is going to be super mad if The Time Machine loses. Just sayin’.

Old As Dirt Bert

The Day The Earth Stood Still was provocative in a few ways for its time. The alien wasn't an enemy, the "monster" didn't look like an ogre, the "attack" was astounding and convincing but not harmful, and the planet got a warning about things that are still a potential problem.

mikethemotormouth

I was hoping to see Metropolis(1927) in here. Maybe next year for the centennial.

MrKsummer7

Don't forget, Crack in the World (1965), The Green Slime (1968), The Wild Wild Planet (1965), Atlantis: The Lost Continent (1961)

Robert Durant

I definite YES to Silent Running. I have yet to see a single reaction from anyone to this classic movie.

Javier Hernandez

In junior high school we watched Fantastic Voyage for our biology class which was amazing. You should check out "Innerspace" (1987) with Denis Quade, Martin Short and Meg Ryan. It is a similar premise with modern effects.

Catherine LW

Logan’s Run and The Time Machine.

mikethemotormouth

I'm ready for any more of his. Fisher King, Moscow on the Hudson, One Hour Photo, Bicentennial Man, Awakenings...

Alex Leach

The Thing (1951) rather better than the remake…

mikethemotormouth

Cassie might not remember it but Alan had that poster up in his cubicle in Tron

Stick Figure Studios

All good choices (except BICENTENNIAL MAN; I'm not a fan of that one). I'd also be fine with POPEYE, INSOMNIA, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, THE FINAL CUT and CADILLAC MAN.

Joe J

No "Soylent Green" (1973)?

Just Plain Bob

True. So let’s vote against it. Kidding aside, I’m shocked that Logan’s Run is doing so well. I’d say it hasn’t aged well, but it sucked 50 years ago.

Richard Maurer

Yeah , I would have voted for that one too.

Richard Maurer

That’s a opinion that I can in no way agree with.

Keith Jacobsen

The Day the Earth Stood Still is chef's kiss.

Joe J

I remember when Cassie promised to watch "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978) a few years back on a LIVE....yes indeed I remember. 😰

Rick Rodriguez

The Thing From Another World should be getting more love.

Richard Maurer

I kind of liked Logan’s Run, but I haven’t seen it since I was in my twenties, so it might just have been Jenny Agutter almost falling out of her “clothes” for the entire movie.

keoma songs

I enjoy the original more, but I also saw it first so that might be influencing me.

Chris

As far as I’m concerned that’s the ONLY version of the movie.

keoma songs

Think she already did What Dreams May Come. Anyways, I hope to be voting for Awakenings

Clay F

I am pulling for The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).

Richard Maurer

I saw the original first too, thought it was just okay. The Carpenter version is one of my favorite horror/sci-fi movies. It’s also much closer to the novella that both movies are based on.

Stick Figure Studios

A rare remake that's superior to the original (which is still very good).

Stick Figure Studios

Ah, well. AWAKENINGS would be great. That was the movie that made me realize Williams was a good dramatic actor. DeNiro is outstanding too.

Chris Thom

Had no idea the original was from the 50's. Learn something new every day.

Chris Thom

Pepperidge Farms remembers.

Tim Weaver

Maybe innerspace will be on the other poll

Chris Davis

Yay! With the Robin Williams Poll, I might finally see Cassie's Reaction to "Best of Times"!

Rob

Forbidden Planet . . . Scifi based on Shakespeare is must see. Several other great movies are on this list.

Philip Alan

Logan's Run was probably the first "adult" movie I saw in the theaters (snuck in).

Art of Free Speech

My Mom actually took my brother and I to the drive-in to see it. I think I was 10. LOL Loved it!

2-Can

I was thinking the same thing, but then are those "dystopian future" movies of the late 60's/early 70's really science fiction or maybe their own category? To me, Planet of the Apes falls on the SciFi side of the line, while Soylent Green, Logan's Run, and Rollerball could have their own genre.

Shawn Kildal

Cassie has seen The Incredible Shrinking Man

Sam Hiraoka

Time machine will lose again 😔

Astraeos

Literally so many of these are must watches. For me, in no particular order, I truly hope this channel watches Logan's Run, The War of the Worlds, Fantastic Voyage, The Time Machine, Forbidden Planet and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Those are all must watch classics among pretty much anybody who watches Sci Fi, or really, just movies in general. There's honestly several more from the 60's and 70's that could be added to the list. Hopefully in the future!

Stick Figure Studios

Cassie literally just saw sone clips from the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS in GREMLINS.

CJ Holden

Pretty much every single one on this list is gold, but I had to go with FORBIDDEN PLANET (just incredibly watchable, an obvious inspiration for STAR TREK and it answers the question what Leslie Nielsen's original hair colour was) and THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, which isn't as ground breaking as the 80s version, but one of the 50s monster movies that still hold up. Plus: It has one of the most insane fire stunts that I have ever seen!

Mark Vaderr

WooHooo! This is a poll that I love. "Logan's Run"? Are you serious? Beating out such phenomenal movies like "Forbidden Planet" & "The War of the Worlds"! "The Thing From Another World", deserves far more appreciation, it's gotten less votes than the weak "Fahrenheit 451". At least "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is doing great.

Mark Vaderr

She did watch the Tom "Cruise War of the Worlds". It terrified her similar to how "The Shining" did. I can't believe you've not seen it.

Mark Vaderr

Thank you! "Logan's Run" is nothing special.

Jens Kristensen

There should be an option to vote ALL ... what an awesome list!

Sean

How does one submit the votes? I see no button for doing so.

Clarence Newman

Some good ones here, but none of my faves are going to win. Logan's Run is good though - Farrah Fawcett and Jenny Agutter in the same film is consolation enough for anyone. The Day The Earth Stood Still gave Ringo Starr a great album cover.

Clarence Newman

You should just be able to click on a title and your vote registers, Sean. If memory serves, the tick boxes don't come up until you click on a title.

Clarence Newman

Alas, a distant third is not going to cut it.

Clarence Newman

I am super mad. A distant third is not good enough.

Mike Lemon

Any particular reason why?

Mike Lemon

No need to bother, Bob. I voted for it so it doesn't stand a chance.

CB

Time After Time (1979 film) is a good one. Written and directed by the same guy who did Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I think you'd love it.

Sean

I see it now, thanks for the timely assistance, Clarence.

David Collins

War of the Worlds is one of those movies that shouldn't even be on a poll. Just watch it. Not saying it's the best, it's not, but it's culturally significant enough that it just needs to be seen.

Ria Grix

Some absolute classics in there. A shame to see Silent Running so far down in the vote, really (and clearly) underrated.

Chris Thom

She did watch a version of it already. The Spielberg one.

Chris Thom

If you click twice, the vote will disappear. You can vote for multiple titles.

Chris Thom

Cassie I don't know if you remember Ransom that well, but the story the villain told on the phone about Morlocks coming up from underground was from The Time Machine.

Chris Thom

Took me a while to realize how inspired Tim Burton was from that movie.

Chris Thom

I voted for it in honor of Clarence. But also six others.

Chris Thom

Was there a newer version that came out fairly recently? I feel like I saw it not too long ago, but I might be thinking of that other show on Peacock about the dystopia/utopia future.

Chris Thom

She half prom prom'd Awakenings at one point. But she forgot.

Sean

Thanks for you kind help, Chris

MikeLL

Re-read, my friend. Of course I saw it. I just said that it is wild that Cassie has seen it before the original.

bgb1975 (Brian)

There are some good ones here. Forbidden Planet, Fantastic Voyage, The Time Machine.

Richard Maurer

Six vote difference, Logan’s Run over The Day the Earth Stood Still, as I write this. It’s getting close.

bknsty14

There was a 2018 version that got terrible ratings because modern day Hollywood sucks and has no idea how to tell good stories.

Clarence Newman

You voted for it in honour of 6 other people? I hope they voted for it too.

Silver Machine

Wow, what a list! These are all classics and worth a watch.

Richard Maurer

I voted for it, along with 6 other movies.

Clarence Newman

Ah, so.....if you and everyone else could just remove your Day The Earth Stood Still and Logan's Run votes, I can surge ahead.

Silver Machine

I agree. The original has better characters, better dialog, and the lovely Margaret Sheridan.

Silver Machine

Seconds also has a reputation among Beach Boys fans. Back in ‘66, Brian Wilson went to see the movie and got freaked out that the protagonist was called Mr. Wilson. He was so paranoid that he believed the film was a conspiracy led by Phil Spector(!) just to mess with his mind. Consequently, Brian didn’t go back to the movies until he saw E.T. in 1982!

Timothy Williams

Gort, klaatu barada nikto. This 66 year old movie buff is soooo happy this is winning the poll. One of the greatest Sci-fi movies ever!

Keith Brown

Seeing how the votes are breaking for the two polls I wish we could have made four polls- (40's,50's)-(60's,70's)-(80's,90's)-(2000,present). Classics of the 50's to 60's should be a weekly series there are so many . You could have one a week from those decades and spend almost a year dedicated to Sci/fi. Halloween month could be the more intense jump scare ones.

Clarence Newman

Off topic, Stick, but tonight's movie night is going to be The Tree of Life. I'm going in!

S w

I loved silent running when it came out, I remember! I can't find it on streaming. I haven't seen it in 30 years!

S w

Great poll !

S w

I would ls love to see a Syfy poll for favorite TV series..

Sarah Jane

Missing: IMHO the *best* Invasion of the Body Snatchers, from 1978, with Donald Sutherland

Joe J

I hear Cassie is good with crayons, lol.

Clarence Newman

I believe it was penalised for Donald's heinous perm.

David

no movie here is really great IMHO

Chris Thom

I don't have a preference. Do you care either way?

Chris Thom

This channel seems to be a bit anti 1960's for some reason.

Keith Brown

I grew up going to 60's movies and catching all the 50's classics on TV . They are more part of my life than the movies of the last few years( although I do love many recent ones and have them on call whenever I want to watch them) but Sci/fi to me means those classics of yesteryear.

Chris Thom

Great film. Kind of a vibey, atmospheric film. Just kinda have to surrender to it. A bit like 2001 in that way.

Clarence Newman

Time Machine, Dave! In fact, I'm gonna go back in time and say that again. Time Machine, Dave!

Clarence Newman

Cassie hates the 60s. If she could avoid getting sick like she avoids the 1960s, she'd be an indestructible Canadian SuperMom.

Richard Maurer

Between these two? I’d prefer TDtESS, but I’m okay with LR too.

John Liebling

Perhaps if enough PIB members send her a request, we'll all get to see her reaction to Awakenings soon...

Richard Maurer

You get everyone else to go along with that and I will too.

Clarence Newman

Well, as I've said, I enjoyed Nebraska, and the pacing of that one is positively glacial. If the writing and characterisation are good, it'll be a treat. Disclaimer: Stick's reputation as a film recommender is in no way on the line!

Stick Figure Studios

See, when you say that it actually makes me a little nervous because while I love NEBRASKA, it's a very different movie from TREE OF LIFE. Yes, the pacing of both is slow, but NEBRASKA is still a pretty straightforward narrative whereas TREE OF LIFE is more elliptical, more poetic and more mysterious. Have you ever seen any other Terence Malick movies? BADLANDS? DAYS OF HEAVEN? THIN RED LINE? THE NEW WORLD? If you have, then you have a little bit more of an idea of what you're in for. If not, it may leave you scratching your head.

Clarence Newman

I've seen Badlands (Martin Sheen, right?) and I think I've seen The Thin Red Line. Badlands was ok. I like Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, though, so I'm hopeful.

Mac61

How about When Worlds Collide (1951)

Joe J

TDtESS is a classic....not understanding the love for Logan's Run, lol.

Freja Corbinne

yes, Mike. Many reasons why. Go educate yourself.

LukeG84

Hard pass!

Stick Figure Studios

What would be, in your opinion, some truly great pre-1980 sci-fi that she hasn't seen yet?

Stick Figure Studios

Brad Pitt is phenomenal in it. You're probably not going to see as much of Sean Penn as you think, but he is there. Though it might be puzzling and confusing, my best advice is to just go with it. Just let it unfold and don't try to make too much sense of it on the first viewing. Let it wash over you and if you have questions, check online afterwards to see what you might have missed because you're not going to get a linear narrative filled with traditional movie scenes, plot points and character beats. You're going to get isolated shots, glimpses of a life, memories a childhood, surreal symbolic shots, philosophizing (someone even say "navel- gazing") narrations from multiple characters about our place in the universe, and some of the most beautiful images ever put on screen. I'm not trying to persuade you not to see it because I think everyone should see it, but I'm just trying to prepare you for the fact that this is going to be a very different kind of cinema than I would assume you are probably used to.

John Rando

Are we not film buffs? I see quite a few movies here that have been remade. Why not appreciate the originals?

John Liebling

I'd like to request Cassie react to the top three on this list...Logan's Run, The Day the Earth stood still, and The Time Machine.

Bammer

My votes go to The War of the Worlds and Forbidden Planet.

Bammer

Blah blah blah blah

Joe J

FYI Clay, "Maplenuts Reacts" is doing Andor, one episode a week.

Richard Maurer

It has its charm. Her name is Jenny Agutter.

Richard Maurer

Seriously Logan’s Run is an interesting movie, but at the start of this I really didn’t think it would do this well. Biggest surprise of the poll.

Richard Maurer

In general AI is crap, especially on the search engines. But for cut and paste type “art” it can be a time saver.

Stewart Menzies

The Day The Earth Stood Still, Logans Run, The Time Machine and War Of The Worlds are my choice.

Clay F

Thanks Joe for letting me know. I am not a huge fan, but I'm picky. I may give them another try. I am currently watching an Andor reaction (1-2 episodes a week) at LM Reactions.

Clay F

Currently, only two movies over 300 votes. The top 2: Logan’s Run (1976) = 322 votes The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) = 318 votes I am pulling for The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).

Clay F

Logan’s Run (1976) is the latest movie in the poll. I voted The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).

Clay F

Ouch, currently 10th place (next to last) of the 11 choices.

Chris B.

Seeing Logan's Run just as I was entering my teenage years was a formative experience. I still enjoy the movie a great deal on rewatch, and it's a good example of being distinctly "70's sci-fi".

Mike Lemon

@Freja- r/LostRedditor ??? How in the world would looking up some randos' opinions on it let me know Diego's?

Clarence Newman

Well, that was one of the weirdest movies I’ve ever seen! Your summary above pretty much nails it, Stick. Beautiful imagery, plus some good story along the way, but I won’t pretend that I understood it all. Glad I watched it though. Somehow, it seems like an important one to tick off.

Barry

You're really scratching that itch for old movies I used to watch when I was a kid. Voted for all but two.

bgb1975 (Brian)

Disappointed that "Fantastic Voyage" isn't doing better. Always had something of a crush on Dr. Cora Peterson!

Clarence Newman

Don't worry. We'll get her eventually in One Million Years BC.

Steve Mercier

Invasion of the Body Snatchers all the way! A little McCarthy-era paranoia is just what the heart needs...

Clarence Newman

I don't wish to plagiarise you, John, but I would also like to request Cassie react to the top three on this list...Logan's Run, The Day the Earth stood still, and The Time Machine. Mainly because I love The Time Machine and it is currently in bronze medal position.

Gro Do

Get ready for a retro groovy future with Basil Exposition and the nurse from An American Werewolf in London. Hide your blinking red Lifeclock.

Mark White

Well my two, “Forbidden Planet” and “Time Machine” don’t look like winning. Hey ho, another time maybe.

John Liebling

If more agree with us, perhaps it will happen. I'd also like toss out the original Twilight Zone from the 1960s, with amazing writing...and with two very famous episodes staring Captain Kirk, a few years before he got that gig, even George Takai is in one of those episodes. Robert Redford, and Robert Duval are in other episodes...Sterling's writing is far above what is created in the 21st century. Cassie and Carlie would enjoy those thought-provoking stories. Many issues 60+ years latter are equally relevant.

James M

"Logan's Run" is not a great movie, but it's likely much more familiar to your average viewer. Some really great movies on the list including some getting many fewer votes. "Seconds", "Silent Running", and "The Thing from Another World" all stand head and shoulders above "Logan's Run". I was thinking if we ran an experiment and let people vote in just one of the two sci-fi polls, either this one before or the other after 1980, we would see "Logan's Run" drop much lower in the rankings. Probably not low enough to let "Seconds" surpass it, but "The Day the Earth Stood Still" would be an easy winner over it.

James M

This is my favorite on the list.

James M

"Silent Running" is the sleeper here. It's such a beautiful film. Also people who know Dern as a petty bad guy character actor will see him differently after this.

Stick Figure Studios

It's especially powerful on the big screen. I had never seen anything like it before and I was just awestruck/ dumbfounded as I walked out of the theater. I couldn't stop thinking about it in the days that followed and as I read about it online and discussed it with others, I began to appreciate it even more. When it came out on home video I watched it again with my wife -- who also loved it -- and got even more out of it (It's definitely a film that improves upon repeat viewings). I considered it easily the best movie of the year and even thought that it was maybe the best movie I'd seen in a long time. After a couple years I had to admit to myself that it is the best movie I've ever seen. Period. I don't expect it to have the same kind of impact on you, but I do appreciate you being willing to give it a shot. So many people are unwilling too challenge themselves with movies that stray off the beaten path and this one definitely does that. Even though I don't know how she would respond to it, I would love for Cassie to have a reaction to it at some point.

James M

It was definitely watched by many people making later sci-fi movies. I wonder if it's hard for people today to get the sense of it and how things were at the time it was made. Does it make less sense to people today?

Stick Figure Studios

Which is funny because it's a PG movie, so you didn't have to sneak in.

James M

I guess every list has to be limited but I'd replace "Logan's Run" with "Soylent Green" or "Westworld" or "Rollerball" in a heartbeat.

James M

Undiplomatic as always Bob. I would not say it sucks but compared to the competition "Logan's Run" should be at the bottom of this list.

Philip Alan

It felt adult in a lot of ways at that age. But I get what you're saying about it being PG.

James M

This is too much information to share about a movie that has not yet been watched.

keoma songs

Rooting for Logan's Run. I think Cassie would get a kick out of the groovy fashion and hair. While I like The Day the Earth Stood Still, it can play pretty stiff. Not even a harsh criticism, I think Michael Rennie's controlled performance fits perfectly.

Clay F

Yeah, Silent Running is next-to-last and Seconds is dead last at a mere 30 votes. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is only 3 votes behind "Logan's Run".

James M

Agreed. The original is a much better movie. They are two entirely different movies. I get why someone who wants an 80s splatter-filled horror movie won't like the original. Conversely someone like me who just doesn't like any Carpenter films also won't like his remake.

Clay F

Time Machine is a respectable 3rd place. Has some name recognition I think.

Mark Vaderr

I'm not understanding it either. I saw Logan's Run, once and that was enough. It is nothing special. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a far superior movie. I'm amazed at the lack of love for Forbidden Planet.

Clay F

Currently only a 3-vote differential. Looks like will go down to the wire. Logan’s Run (1976) = 341 votes The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) = 338 votes

Mark Vaderr

I think David needs attention.

James M

It's poor quality theft of the work of genuine artists. I'm sure you know that. Any particular reason why you would ask why?

James M

The channel is not big on classic movies. Actually this channel thinks 90s movies are classics so.. :D

James M

You've watched all of these and think none are great? Compared to... what exactly? Surely not compared to other sci-fi films. If you want a channel that is going to stick to "Jules and Jim" and "Citizen Kane" you are kind of in the wrong place.

James M

I'm okay with this idea if we can just keep extending down the list until we include "The Thing From Another World".

MrKsummer7

Yes, I agree, all three are far superior films, written and directed. They hold up remarkably well, with each having an eerie relevance to 21st-century society. If it were a triple feature, it would be tough to pick which one to watch first. I do love Logan’s Run, but the average viewer will not enjoy the outdated special effects as much as the sci-fi nerds in the room would. We grew up seeing it in the theaters when it first came out, so we can look past that and watch it for what it is. My Logan’s Run standouts are the Carrousel scene, the innovative soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith, and Farrah Fawcett, Jenny Agutter, and Peter Ustinov.

Richard Maurer

Early on I thought Forbidden Planet would at least be one of the front runners. Not so much.

Clay F

I voted for it.

Mike Lemon

@James- Because I want to know Diego's reasoning??? I thought that would have been obvious when I asked him the question. But since you want to jump in- So, when Ben and/or Cassie steals "the work of genuine artists" for the thumbnails and updates, do you have a problem with that too? Also, there are plenty of other reasons someone could not like A.I.. They could just be a Luddite, they could be building a new computer and are mad at RAM costs, they could find the ethics of A.I. scraping unethical, they could like Ben/Cassie's Photoshop skills, their wife could have left for ChatGPT 4, they could really like the "don't date robots" episode of Futurama, they can think it is making people more stupid, they can be like me and just want to minimize it's use (excepting Neuro-sama and Evil), etc.

David

No. I comment on movies I've seen and recall, and when I don't find a great movie in the list, I don't vote so that those who have seen the movies can vote without interference. As for un mentioned great movies in the sci fi category I'd say Matrix, Alien, Ex Machina, 1978 Body Snatchers, Westworld, the Stepford wives. Some of those are post 1980 but all are great. You can argue about my opinions but you'll always lose since they are exactly that, my opinions. I voted for several in the other post 1980 poll. I'm in the right place.

David

Haven't seen it. Will watch!!

bgb1975 (Brian)

Clarence - is Cannonball Run the sequel to Logan's Run?

Clarence Newman

If it gets CR watched, then yes, yes it is.

Clarence Newman

I've just noticed something on the poster above. As Chandler Bing would say, "Could 'Fahrenheit 451' BE more catastrophically spelt??

Clarence Newman

The bronze medallist should always get a reaction. Otherwise, it's an insult to the Olympic ideal.

Clarence Newman

Ustinov? That just reminded me of "One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing".

keoma songs

Had to add Logan's Run to my lone Silent Running vote. Sanctuary!

Richard Maurer

As did I, but obviously not enough of us did.

Richard Maurer

I originally didn’t vote for Logan’s Run, ended up voting for it on a whim. Thought about taking my vote away from it, but I’ve decided to let it ride and let the chips fall where they may. It’s not really close enough to matter now.

Richard Maurer

I doubt if even second place will get a watch. While these are all good movies, I doubt any of them will break 60k in a week on YouTube.

Richard Maurer

I’d love it if she watched the top 3 but considering how older movies do on YouTube (not good) I think one is all we’re going to get.

Richard Maurer

I’ve found that when you give a negative opinion on movies it pays to add a ‘imo’ on the end. Unless your goal was to rile people up, in which case carry on as you were.

Richard Maurer

Yeah I thought Forbidden Planet would be a top contender too.

Richard Maurer

PG was a pretty loose definition back then, which is why they eventually added PG13.

Richard Maurer

I watched Maplenuts’ LotR reaction and not much else till recently. They’ve been watching a lot of good movies lately and I’m getting into their reactions more.

Richard Maurer

James - Knowing that you don’t like horror, I understand that it colors your opinion of the “remake”. But gore (great practical effects) aside, the storyline of paranoia and fear of loss of body autonomy is much better (and much closer to the original Ip) than the simple cold-war era politics and anti-science bias of the original, that were rather commonplace in the sci-fi of the 50’s.

Richard Maurer

I’d think the central theme of ecological destruction would make more sense to people today, even if the scenario presented by the movie is highly unlikely, similar to Soylent Green (humans likely going extinct before things got that bad).

John Liebling

With a channel as successful as PIB, perhaps Cassie is willing to risk a few extra older films not getting as many views as others. And perhaps in the long term, she'll discover that there are plenty of older folks, such as myself, who love these older films, those hidden gems, and other older and younger people who are looking for unique reactions to unique films and will join the PIB membership.

David

If I have to put IMO on a movie opinion to prevent someone from getting riled up, that's their problem, not my problem.

Clay F

Yep, looks like Logan’s Run (1976) will be the winner.

Clay F

Year of movie likely to win pre-1980 poll = 1976 Year of movie likely to win post-1980 poll = 1981

Richard Maurer

They almost never do YouTube edits for the pick-a-flick winners anymore, as well as skipping other movies too. Frankly, I’m not sure if even the winner of this poll will get a YouTube edit.

Richard Maurer

As I said, carry on then. I don’t always put a imo on my negative opinions, depends on the mood I’m in.

Joe J

Quite disappointed that TDtESS got overtaken here near the end. I'll just have to hope Cassie reacts to the Top 2 from each poll.

Silver Machine

Logan's Run? Really?! I don't know how you guys always manage to pick the most mediocre films, even when they're surrounded by a list of stone-cold classics. But it looks like you've done it again. Congrats.

Clay F

Currently, The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) only 12 votes down. There is still a chance. 10 hours remaining.

fastecp1

The Day the Earth Stood Still, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Time Machine are my top 3

Clarence Newman

Ooh, I know a movie that came out in 1981.

Christian Becker

My heart bleeds a little about "Forbidden Planet", but Logan's Run is OK. There are so many real classics on that list that it is really hard to choose. Cassie could make a classic sci-fi poll every other month and wouldn’t run out of movies to watch for several years. But as I am here for the long haul — good things come to those who wait ;-) — they will sooner or later turn up on the channel. And if I look at what we are presented with as sci-fi these days, the old classics will appear on the screen sooner rather than later.

Astraeos

I'm pretty sure Logan's Run itself IS a classic.

Sam Hiraoka

Fine I will also vote for Day Earth Stood Still now it's 2 votes over Logans Run!

Happy Hanukkah

I'm more disturbed by the egregious misspelling of 233. (I don't trust y'all sufficiently to have used 506.)

Happy Hanukkah

Followed by its own sequel Run Cannonball Run.

Happy Hanukkah

Buncha pervs who are hoping this will be followed by Walkabout! Obviously.

Clarence Newman

I’ll be ok if she doesn’t watch second place, as long as she watches third. Seems perfectly logical to me.

Mark White

I’ve watched Logan’s Run when I was a kid, but can’t really remember much at all. But I don’t think I liked it. Maybe it will be better this time. It would have been nice to see one of Time Machine or Forbidden planet in a close Second.

Richard Maurer

So it’s Logan’s Run then. Not what I would have chose but I don’t hate it either. It will probably make for an interesting reaction anyway. I haven’t seen this film in decades so I’ll likely watch the full reaction to see how well this film holds up - or doesn’t, as the case may be.

Richard Maurer

HH - Jenny Agutter mostly wears clothes through the entire movie! It’s not her fault they’re rather see-through and seem about to fall off her at any minute. ;-)

Richard Maurer

I’d be all for that…..if she pretends like Pacific Rim came in second. Otherwise she can just watch the top 2 from this poll.

Richard Maurer

A friend of mine used to have a Olds 442.

Richard Maurer

Cannonball Run already has a sequel, which should never be seen or even spoken of by anyone …. So it’s similar to the first Cannonball Run.

Richard Maurer

You might enjoy more as an adult….. for the “scenery” anyway.

Clarence Newman

Daisy Duke is in Cannonball Run 2. I rest my case.

Chris B.

Jenny Agutter is a very beautiful lady, but that does not take away from the story itself in Logan's Run being classic sci-fi with compelling themes that evoke a sense of curiosity about the world it shows. And really, all the lead actors in the movie are attractive young adults entering their prime, so one can't blame solely Jenny for that.

Collar City Guy

Cassie since the vote was so close, any chance you will watch both the first and second place entries? The Day the Earth Stood Still is just a classic movie that helped elevate sci-fi from B movie status to more of a mainstream genre, and I'd watch Logan's Run just to see the beauty of Holly 13/Farrah Fawcett

Joe J

Yeah, I would second that request, only 4 votes between 1st and 2nd.

Joe J

I really hope she watches the Top 2....TDtESS loses by 4 votes! I'll skip the Logan's Run reaction, I re-watched it a few years back and was not impressed. Okay movie for what it is.

Mark White

Thanks Richard, I do like scenery. 😉

Mark Vaderr

I hope she watches "The Day the Earth Stood Still", such a great movie.

Richard Maurer

So watch the Dukes of Hazard. Or watch clips of her on YouTube. No need to torture yourself with a truly awful movie.

John

Exceptionally good list, but exceptionally bad that THEM wasn't on it

Old As Dirt Bert

Dang. The Day The Earth Stood Still is a far better movie from 25 years earlier with a much smaller (equivalent) budget - and a much more realistic message.

Rick Williams

Logan's Run won fair and square. It is the better movie. The Patreons have spoken.

Richard Maurer

It won. Fact. It’s the better movie? Opinion.

Richard Maurer

My brother had some 151 rum go up into his sinuses while doing a shot. He said he thought was going to die from the pain.

Chris Thom

Don't know if it's better, per se. Probably a bit more modern and entertaining though.

Chris Thom

Had never heard of Forbidden Planet until this channel. Seems to get a lot of love here though.

Christian Becker

This movie had quite a leap forward in special effects and electronic sound. It was one of the first major Hollywood films without an orchestra. And who doesn't like Leslie Nielsen, in one of his first major roles, commanding a spaceship.

James M

Dystopian sci-fi from the 70s that's better than Logans Run: Soylant Green, Westworld, Silent Running, Rollerball. It's not even the best of its kind in its time. As people say, it's not terrible but strange that it wins polls.

Doug

Cassie should watch Silent Running sometime. It's an often overlooked movie, and example of early 'hard' sci-fi and a damn fine movie.

JarHead0351

Haven't seen that movie in years, that is a good forgotten movie.
