One of my favorite sci-fi of the 21st century! This is one of those "drop everything and watch the reaction" type movies. Also, I, and we, still need the interstellar "rewatch" as it's my all-time time favorite standalone sci-fi.

Edgar Gonzalez

Anyone play the video game oblivion Fam? Put it in the comments. I first played on ps3...Just a fun Fact about me, I know the movie has nothing to do with the "Elder Scrolls" series 😏

JC762

anyone else miss the "find your own copy here" links?

Robert da Spruce

Great film! Looking forward to your reaction ladies!

Mark White

Had a funny feeling you might like this one.

Shad Kanyak

One of Tom Cruise’s underrated gems. One of my favorite sci-fi films.

Joe J

Cruise bias...lol.

Dean Holt

This is one of TC films that get really overlooked. As a massive Sci-Fi fan I’ve watched it loads and I never get bored.

Clay F

I played Oblivion alot 15+ years ago

Edgar Gonzalez

I got me hooked, from there I went on to Skyrim, then...well we are still waiting for Elder Scrolls 6 😄

Nihildum

can't wait to watch this one. Also, watch Sunshine! I know you want to.

Astraeos

Just watched this movie for the first time recently, and I have no idea how I missed it for so long! Also Andrea Riseborough as a redhead... *swoon*

Astraeos

Youngin. I first played the Elder Scrolls series with Morrowind in 2003 on Xbox. The rest was history. I still have the GOTY Game Guide for Morrowind, 23 years later lol. A true Tome.

Philip Alan

Fun movie! Great reaction! Final Reckoning coming? Asking for a friend. :)

K, Zachary

So the guy who directed this did Top Gun: Maverick he also directed the Lady Gaga music video Hold Your Hand he also did the movie F1 and was born in Marshalltown, Iowa WTF?. I thought she was joking with me. We want to watch Cross first we are going to binge Scarpetta this weekend. This is next though.

Canadianant

Just watch.com will tell you where anything is playing

Mark Duedall

Saw this in the theater and didn’t enjoy it much - and then saw it a few years later on a lark and marveled at how well this is shot and acted. Really turned into a great watch. Btw ladies add an early Tom Cruise to the list - Taps. You will love it.

JL_83

same director as Top Gun: Maverick, that’s a good sign…

Clay F

So did I and especially my son.

Clay F

Visually stunning (cinematography). Good soundtrack. Olga Kurylenko is beautiful. Seem to be something missing. 3/5 I voted these 3 in the poll: Escape from NY, Moon (2009), Oblivion (2013). I have longed hoped for a reaction to "Moon" (2009) [IMDb 7.8, RT 90%, RT Audience 89%] ("Boosted by Sam Rockwell's intense performance, Moon is a compelling work of science-fiction.")

Philip Alan

LOVED the style of photography they used on this one. Such fantastic aperture on close-ups.

DavidJPL

I use both JustWatch .com and IMDB to see where things are streaming because neither one is always perfect.

DavidJPL

As my favorite band of all time, I feel obligated to point out that this is one of the few films to have a Led Zeppelin song. :) Zeppelin is probably the most strict rock band of all time when it comes to allowing their music to be used, so you know it must be special! ;-) Seriously tho, that's a great 'hideaway' scene with the vinyl record player.

Larry Darrell

Wall•E meets Road Warrior meets 2001: A Space Odyssey… and I love it!

Larry Darrell

I wonder if Cassie has ever listened to the song “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin that’s featured in the film. If not, perhaps she’d be more interested if she knew some of the lyrics were inspired by Lord of the Rings.

Clay F

I love that the movie had a Led Zeppelin song. The miniseries Sharp Objects (w/Amy Adams) had Led Zeppelin songs. Made me like that series even more.

TinCan Cosmanaut

Vee-Kah like the letter V then Ka. lol it’s killing me as a Ukrainian. They keep saying Veckah. lol sorry, otherwise great movie

Kyle Reese Popcorn Fan

If you don't mind me asking, I assumed it was short for her name, Victoria, but is it, its own middle named that's pronounced apart from Victoria?

Robert da Spruce

Underrated Tom Cruise film IMO I saw a cool YouTube video about how the director didn’t want to use green screen for the skies at the Tech 49 home base. Pretty interesting. You can definitely see the naturalness of the lighting compared to green screen https://youtu.be/FYPCPr-fzoM?si=4-TyvE69VeNHUsTe Excellent reaction guys! Oh and P.S. tell Carly the wrapper to her snack was really loud 😄

Mister Lou

Great underrated Tom Cruise Sci-fi movie! Let's keep it going and show your sis Edge of Tomorrow!

Chris Thom

Oh that's right, this was maybe the first to significantly use the same techniques as The Mandalorian. Or this came first, I mean. May've been the same studio, actually.

Chris Thom

Is the movie based on the game at all?

Chris Thom

The lake scenes were filmed at June Lake in Central California. Not so far from you, I think? Directly west, in the mountains. Lots of giant Sequoyah Trees nearby.

Rick Rodriguez

Great reaction. Wished they read that the director was Joseph Kosinski. Of Only the Brave and Top Gun: Maverick.

Kit Taylor

Great job as always. I still tear up at the end. "I am Jack Harper and I am home."

Kit Taylor

What are you talking about. He's a phenomenal actor. Three nominations for "Best Actor" for "Magnolia", "Born On the Fourth Of July" and "Jerry Maguire". You are of course entitled to your opinion but it makes me sad that you are missing out on an absolutely legendary body of work.

Edgar Gonzalez

ABSOLUTELY!.... Not 😁 I mentioned that in my earlier post that the movie is not based on the game at all. The only thing they have in common is the name, thats all.

DavidJPL

Clay - Yes, I am biased, but absolutely agree that "Ramble On" worked really well with Tom Cruise relaxing analog with books, basketball, and vinyl in a ball-cap, at a green, waterside oasis. Larry - great point! Robert Plant loved Tolkien! "Ramble On" is most prominent, but also "The Battle of Evermore" and the obvious "Misty Mountain Hop". lol Yep, I loved 'Sharp Objects' on HBO too; the song "In the Evening" being teased is almost a minor character! Again, I'm biased, but I really think that the scarcity of Led Zeppelin in 50 years of TV and Movies really helps any scene stand-out. There have been some clunkers ("Rock n Roll" in a Cadillac TV ad; "Kashmir" wasted in forgotten TV show 'Revolution'). But most uses are great; most appropriately "Immigrant Song" (used often) in 'Thor Ragnarok'! lol And there is also a great 'DVD Extra' of Jack Black BEGGING Zeppelin to use it in 'School of Rock'!!! LOL (I'm sure it's on YouTube). My other favorites include 'American Hustle', 'Silver Linings Playbook' (Bradley Cooper!), 'Argo', and most recently 'F1 The Movie'. Also 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' did NOT play; "When it comes to making out, Side 1 of Zeppelin's 4th album" lol. There is also a really cool version of "Whole Lotta Love" from 1979 by 'Ike & Tina Turner' in the movie 'Cruella', which has a GREAT Soundtrack overall! Fun trivia; Ben Affleck had to actually go back and re-edit 'Argo' to correct the needle-drop onto the album in order to get the correct track placement. Unfortunately Tom Cruise did not get called out for this in 'Oblivion', and "Ramble On" is NOT the first track on the album side, so this will always be a movie goof. :) Sorry I'm 'rambling on...' ;-) , but the ultimate movie use of course is the great 'Almost Famous' (2 Hr 42 min. 'Bootleg Cut'!) since it is Cameron Crowe's actual life story of following Led Zeppelin around the U.S. in the mid '70s. They let him use a bunch of songs, since he was actually there. :)

Clay F

You mentioned you wanted to show Carly "Edge of Tomorrow" (Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt). Agree, good movie. Arguably more acclaimed. I don't cite the review data below to diminish Oblivion (b/c I liked Oblivion ok) but instead for comparison to Cruise sci-fi movie the following year you thought would be good to show Carly. IMDb 7.9, RT 91%, RT Audience 90% - Edge of Tomorrow (2014) IMDb 7.0, RT 53%, RT Audience 61% - Oblivion (2013)

Gray

First watch for me and that was a pretty good movie, although I do wonder what they were conquering other planets with before making the Jack Harper clones, just the drones maybe. I Wonder if BJJ is part of the NASA training as he sunk in a decent Triangle Choke on his clone, rare to see in movies I just remember Mel Gibson doing one in Lethal Weapon. Hopefully we get a Moon watch at some point another good recent sci-fi with Sam Rockwell . Also +1 for a Edge Of Tomorrow (Live,Die,Repeat) watch with Carly sometimes in the future, probably my favourite Cruise film.

Larry Darrell

I never even thought if the needle drop was correct. That’s cool. I love when they think to get little details like that right.

Chris Thom

Moon...exactly the movie I was thinking of. Another great Sam Rockwell performance and movie is Matchstick Men.

Mojo One Thousand

Same dtrector as "F1", "Topgun: Maverick", and "Only the brave"... Joseph Kosinski. This is also based on his original story. It's pretty stylish, with an interesting story. I don't mind it, but all times I have seen it, it feels a bit sterile to me. There was a more recent film called "The Creator" with John David Washington which felt similar to this. I looked back and I did vote for it, but I also voted for "Sunshine" and "Moon" which I think I would have preferred to win, but it must have been the Cruise of it for Cassie that made me click it. I would also be up for "Edge of tomorrow" rewatch with Carly, it was disappointing it was already seen when I joined Patreon.

Mojo One Thousand

I've suggested "Matchstick men" before, also has Nic Cage.

Clay F

The word "sterile" is what I thought.

Chris Thom

A classic, imo. I think it got overlooked on the Heist Movie Poll, if I remember right. As in it wasn't on it at all. Pretty sure that counts as a heist movie...?

Joe J

I was very happy she watched the 2nd place movies...because I got The Day the Earth Stood Still. ☑

Chris Thom

Oh interesting. I haven't seen it since 2013, but that's a word I would've also probably used. But I thought maybe I was just in a weird mood when I saw it. So wasn't sure.

Steve Holton

@Gray, the sand surface would've been perfect for a BJJ flying armbar. It's probably the most fun to watch, but impractical BJJ move since it is too easy to injure both fighters on a hard landing. But the sand would've mitigated that problem. But such a "flashy" move probably would take the audience out of the film. The use of the triangle choke almost does that here.

Chris Thom

He is quite good at his job. As much as some of the family and Scientology stuff is pretty disturbing, I do think he has a talent and major dedication to his craft.

Clay F

+1 for "Matchstick Men" -- I like it and think Cassie would too.

OddThomas

I enjoyed it on first viewing but It's on second viewing that you really appreciate the storytelling and world-building and the music... Another underrated Tom Cruise movie is Vanilla Sky

OddThomas

Sunshine is an amazing film

OddThomas

I think this was the first thing I saw Andrea Riseborough in and thought she was great. Then years later I read an interview where she said Oblivion was the worst film she worked on, which is a shame as it's a great film (maybe she hated being stuck in the tower in every scene, idk)

Steve Holton

Yes, in a 2016 interview Andrea Riseborough was asked about her worst job ever. She answered, "Either shredding duck in a Chinese restaurant, or Oblivion." After this experience she vowed to avoid any future, large-scale, studio films. Big budget sci-fi sets are often pressed for time and many things can conspire for a less than optimal experience for actors. As many famous actors have said, "I act for free, they pay me to be isolated and bored."

Mark White

“Moon” is a very good sci-fi. Sam Rockwell gives a superb performance.

Mark White

“Sunshine” is one of my favourite Sci-fi. Top movie. It’s in the top 10 on popcorn requests, so I’m sure it will be watched at some point. “Moon” is awesome too.

Gray

She was great in the dark comedy satire "The Death Of Stalin" well worth a watch, from the creator of Alan Partridge, The Thick of It & Veep.

TinCan Cosmanaut

it is, but the spelling Vika is a Russian/Slavic variation. It’s a very common name. It’s my sisters and nieces name.

Nick Ireland

I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person but with a lot of sci-fi movies it's like my brain switches off and I have no idea what's going on. Unfortunately, this was one of those movies. Had to switch off when the second Tom Cruise appeared. Special effects and music were great though!

Joe J

Dozen actresses waiting in line to take your place girl.

Milton Reduxed

Movie Cocktail Recipe—Take a bit of Screamers, add some Wall-E, mix together with Moon & Matrix, add a dash of Total Recall, sprinkle some 2001, serve in a glass of Independence Day, and you have an Oblivion

Christian Becker

I just finished all the storylines in Oblivion Remastered ;-). I've been into The Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall.

Edgar Gonzalez

It's one of those games they remastered, sell it at a discount. And even tho you have played and beaten it you got to buy it

Chris Thom

She reminds me of Rebecca Ferguson so much for some reason. Speaking of RF, she did an interview a year or so ago or so, and she said someone (costar) was a truly a nightmare to work with and the whole internet was trying to deduce who she was talking about. Lol. I don't think it was ever quite decided.

Chris Thom

I still don't understand why the oceans were suddenly dirt.

Rick Williams

I have always liked this movie. It is mind bending but it makes you think. Great reaction Cassie & Carly.

Mojo One Thousand

I agree Andrea Riseborough is good in "The Death of Stalin", as are most of the performances. I thought about it and "In the loop" (a movie based on "The thick of it") as left of centre war movie poll options. Armanndo Iannuci is great.

Mojo One Thousand

I probably think that being "sterile" would have been intended for the first act... but it doesn't really shift once the plot kicks off.

Mojo One Thousand

@Chris "Matchstick men" is crime related, but I don't know if it genuinely qualifies as a "heist" movie as people think of them... it also been a while since I have seen it, so I may be wrong.

Burger On Couch

Something about killing the moon caused cataclysmic earthquakes and massive tsunamis. That can move some water. And then there were those giant water-sucking machines the aliens had everywhere. Maybe they were further along than we realized. Two weeks until Titan might've meant two weeks until the water was all gone and the job was done.

Burger On Couch

Thanks for the link! That was neat stuff!

Matt

The Creator 2023 another great underrated sci-fi flick

YodatheHobbit

Only think I'm slightly disappointed about it that is appears you stopped the movie just before the EPIC end credits song started. It's beautiful! "My Heart Will Go On" level good. I always consider end credits music and songs just as important as a scene from the film, as a way to decompress and have catharsis, reaching the higher emotional depth only music can bring, while you're still thinking about the films scenes and performances. I often do a kind of "minds eye mental montage" recap of the films scenes while I'm watching the end credits.

K, Zachary

All right so my gf watched this last night while I watched the Blackhawks- Mammoths hockey game. She completely understands why Cassie and Carly like this movie Tom Cruise in a post-apocalyptic Sci-fi movie. The visual effects are so cool. She loves the fact that they really liked it. She absolutely loved both of their wardrobes.( I really don't see how that has anything to do with the movie but I was told to write it.) She understands why this got voted first. While she generally liked it. She also refused to say anything bad it because Cassie, Carly and a lot of people liked it. Props to the people that voted for a movie that Cassie and Carly both really liked.

OddThomas

Agreed. Always watch the credits til the end
