Hey guys! Thank you for all the sweet mother's day wishes! As I was about 1/3rd of the way into this movie, I didn't think I was going to like it. The last 1/3rd changed my mind. Hooah! I wanted to hug Charlie so much and I honestly thought Al Pacino the actor, must have been blind. Different type of movie than I think I've seen before, I'm happy with this pick!

[Full Reaction] Scent of a Woman (1992)

Eric Cable

You may be cool, but you'll never be as cool as Al Pacino dancing the tango with Gabrielle Anwar.

David Freese

Hi Cassie. Happy Mother's Day. Thank you I appreciate that you posted this tonight. Natalie has to go back to work on Tuesday and she's been bugging me about watching it all weekend She loves this movie and I hope it'll surprise me as well. Will be glad to see this for first time with her and you. 😄😁 A little comment after watching. I liked the last 45 minutes. But like Cassie said that first 2 acts just at times couldn't understand and didn't like. I think it's a little to long but the last act saved it for me. Anybody who wants to comment and just help with the early part of movie I'd appreciate it. Cassie as usual you help keep my interest up and I liked your reactions. Thanks again for letting me experience a movie I would have never seen before.

Andy Owen

What a great movie, Pacino is one of the greats but you have the greatest channel.

Mr Jordan

Hoo-Hah! Al Pacino makes an appearance on this channel. So many memorable performances over the years. Can't wait for you to see him in Heat and The Godfather 1&2 that was supposed to be part of your heist and mobster/mafia poll but wisely pulled to watch separately.

Alex Villarreal

It's an excellent performance by Pacino. It's a perceptive study on depression: the sudden mood swings, the troubled, dark head space moments and even substantial weight loss (the character has his clothes tailored because his clothes fit too large.) Well-deserved honors for this performance.

Aaron

HOOAH!!! Was not expecting this one tonight! It's quarter to midnight, but goddammit I'm staying up to watch this!

Aaron

Great thing about Hooah is that it can mean basically anything in the army except no. Sergeant: Hey private! Did you finish clearing out that connex container? Private: Hooah! (Affirmative) Sergeant: Alright platoon, we've all got our tasks for the day. Let's get them knocked out, Hooah? (Understood?) Sergeant: Well done Private, you just hit that target dead center at 250 meters! Private: HOOAH SERGEANT! (Expression of enthusiasm)

Alex Villarreal

Oh, Cassie is not familiar with Chris O'Donnell! She needs to see Disney's THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1993) one day. Will be good background preparation if she ever covers THE MAN WITH THE IRON MASK, too, to be a bit familiar with the Musketeer characters.

Darren Hill

Great movie with probably the greatest screen actor in cinema history.

Stick Figure Studios

The director of this film, a fella named Martin Brest, also did BEVERLY HILLS COP and MIDNIGHT RUN (one of my favorite films). He was briefly one of the hottest directors in Hollywood before he did a film called MEET JOE BLACK, starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins, which was not well-received either commercially or critically (it's not terrible, but given the caliber of talent involved it's very disappointing; it's also interminably long, slow, clunky, weird and, frankly, just dull) before directing the universally loathed GIGLI. Now he has completely disappeared. It's a shame because for a while he was doing good work and SCENT OF A WOMAN is one of his good ones. It finally won Al Pacino his long overdue Oscar.

Jonathan Patrick

I happen to love this directors film, Meet Joe Black and I predict they will love it too when they react to it. Midnight Run also a great of director Martin Brest.

Craig Russell

FYI, can't chew the leather and all the other phrases are sayings to express old age. Can't chew the leather is basically saying bad or no teeth because of old age.

Shehab Dawoud

Glad your introduction to Pacino was a good one before we get into the more dark stuff. I'm still divided on this movie. I don't think the movie itself is great, but Pacino's performance carries it so much that the movie turns out to be a good one. At the same time, this is one of the best and worst things to happen to Pacino in my eyes. Obviously, he got the Oscar that he had been robbed off at least twice. But this role also meant that he basically ended up becoming this character for the rest of his movies. It works sometimes, like in Heat, othertimes it's too over the top. Some of us miss hs more nuanced performances like in The Godfather. I guess The Insider is the closest we've got in the last 3 years or so. Can't wait for Heat!

Aaron

This movie always gets me nostalgic as hell. Pretty sure I PCS'd or TDY'd to every post mentioned in this film. Except Fort Benning, but that's where I did my basic training. Lol

Mr. Killeverything

Your reaction showed how great of a movie that this is. Cheers.

Brian Harris

This is a key performance in Pacino’s career, and a good one to start with. This is the one he finally won his Oscar for, on something like his eighth nomination, and it really did change him. For about fifteen years after this, he was basically playing Colonel Slade in everything he did. He settled back into the more nuanced style he made his name on eventually, and he’s given some really masterful performances in recent years - The Irishman and House of Gucci come to mind. Over the top as this performance can seem at times, I’m not sure how many actors could have successfully made Slade likable. Jack Nicholson maybe, but we would have liked his charm, we wouldn’t have necessarily seen his humanity. Pacino really finds that deep pain that Charlie references, that intense self-hatred that anyone with depression knows so well, and lays it out mercilessly. He doesn’t seem to care whether or not you like Frank, he just wants you to understand why he is how he is. It’s a tremendously successful performance in a script that is pretty flawed (I think the whole contrived courtroom scene at the end could be cut and replaced with a more grounded conclusion to the Great Baird Jaguar Scandal and we wouldn’t miss much). On top of all of that, this is the movie that started my idolization of Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s just a kid here, but he’s so great as George. He’s such a dumbass, but at the same time, he’s vulnerable, and his interactions with his dad at the end tell you everything you need to know about HIS humanity and inner life. Early seeds of greatness starting to blossom.

Brian Jones

One of the best actors of a generation in an academy award winning performance. Pacino is pretty much amazing in anything prior to 2000. From Godfather, Scarface, Devils Advocate, And Justice For All, Dog Day Afternoon, Sea Of Love, Heat, and many others..... You really can't go wrong with any of his performances or films. So glad you enjoyed it. I would strongly recommend that you put What Dreams May Come, Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society on your list at some point as well if you haven't already seen them. Three absolute must see dramas I think you would also enjoy staring Robin Williams. Great reaction as always.

Doug Fisher

Cass... it might help you to think of the smelling of women this way... it is his way of saying I am taking notice of you and paying attention, even giving a compliment. Since he is blind, he can't notice shoes, clothes, or a hair styles so he can't make note of or complement these things. What he can pay attention to is the "Scent of a Woman". Besides... it is not like he was burying his nose in their hair or some such thing. Pacino's character in this film always reminded me of my late Grampa. He was an old Scotsman and the more he like you the more he barked at you.

bknsty14
>>83520773

She’s reacted to What Dreams May Come and I think she’s seen Good Will Hunting in her private time (not 100% sure). Dead Poets is a must react.

Greg

OMG Movie Buddy. Loved your reaction to this one. I can relate sometimes to much to the Colonel as i spent 11 years U.S.Navy. I can say its rarely meant as a degradation to women. but more a " im used o talking this way" Thank you so much for sharing you're time with us. if you like Pacino id recommend Heat for another venture into his acting ability.

Steven Ashford

The sense of smell is the most powerful tie to someone’s memory. My Uncle and both his children are blind, as others have noted it’s how they experience life around them. We would often times try to sneak in on my uncle when we were kids hold our breath so we wouldn’t make any noise walk barefoot and slow and he would still know we were in the room. I asked him when I got older, I asked him uncle how did he know we were trying to sneak in on him to which he replied I could feel the pressure change in the room. So our other senses clearly get more sensitive to make up for the loss of sight. Finally, Cassie after this reaction I was prompted to P.M. you in Patreon. Check it out when you get a chance. You’re the best hope you had a great Mother’s Day!

MetallicOpeth

pacino was incredibly brilliant in this movie. he created an amazing character who is all things terrifying, fascinating, a total jerk and a loveable old man all in one

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Wow, now I get it. When I heard Pacino won his Oscar for this movie, after all the other incredible performances of his career, it didn't make sense to me. He was awesome in this, he didn't quite get the Army "hooah" sound right I have to admit, but he sure got the depression down. Wouldn't mind seeing more Pacino reactions, especially the first two Godfather movies and Heat.

Grinznmore

Cassie, I'm going to be bold and argue that this may well be the best movie you've ever watched. Scan through the movies in your growing library and ask yourself where are you in the movie? The majority of the movies, you're outside looking in. Star Wars, Raiders, Rocky....you're the observer. Others, are sensory and you reflect emotionally to what you're seeing. Most RomComs are like that. You use empathy and think back to similar experiences. You are correct when you say you're going to have to reflect on this over the next few days and this was a unique experience. Why? Because like very few films, you BECAME Charlie. You are pulled into his character--you just finished a roller coaster weekend with LtCol Frank Slade. If you watch you're reaction there is very little lag time. You're response is running parallel with Charles. There's not that much looking for Charles's reaction, the audience has their eyes on Frank. Frank is a superhero, but unlike a comic book character, his powers are slowly dribbled out. Marvel characters, you quickly learn their powers and vulnerabilities. Strength, flying, technology, etc. With Frank, you still wonder his full capabilities. Charlie asks at the end of the film, "Col are you looking at me?" Another feature of this film is it's brutal honesty. Anyone who's been intimate knows precisely what Frank is verbalizing. The movie always keeps you on your heels. You never know what to expect. You don't dare take anything for granted. People need the three R's: Respect, Recognition, and Relevance. Frank mentions several times how he took care of the men under his command. He lost that with his accident. He found it when he adopted Charlie. He's brutally honest when he asks Charlie if he wants him to adopt him? What started as a bucket list became a discovery of relevance. Early on he planned to take his life. His loss of sight unfolded slowly and he started saving his money faced with a day of total darkness. Special props to the soundtrack. Thanks Cassie. For me, this was a top-tier experience. I truly appreciate it.

Luis

Pacino should have won in 74 for Godfather II but lost as the Academy handed out a make-good pick. And he gets his make-good win here in this role. Denzel Washington should have won for Malcolm X this year. Denzel put out the performance of the decade in that movie.

Dave

Another great movie, another great reaction Cassie! You are really starting to analyze these movies, which is great to see, and your reactions are as good as always. Can't wait to pick this one apart for some good material to work with!

Jason Mackey

Happy Mother’s Day, Cassie! Your content with this movie taught me how important it is to be objective and study the content within. I am a better man for it.

softshoes

Oscar worthy from Al Pacino. Chris O'Donnell was fantastic as well. I knew you would hate Slade for most of the movie but once you(we) all realized what he felt we would find the good man inside. He sexualized everyone but in the end we discover that all that really mattered was the scent of a woman. Great reaction and a wonderful time revisiting this terrific movie with youl

Ricardo Alanis

Can’t wait to watch this reaction this week. Al Pacino spent a lot of time with people who were blind IRL to prepare for the film to ensure it was believable in terms of where his gaze was and how they navigated their space. Chris O’Donell was also amazing and this is a movie that my mom introduced me to that I loved from the very first time I saw it. As I get older I understand better the nuances of Charlie’s situation and the argument that Col. Slade makes on his behalf.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

That was quite a roller coaster ride. Very interesting reaction indeed.

Terry Yelmene

This is an instance when watching Cassie was more difficult than watching the movie. At those moments of disappear and danger it seems she won't be able to make it through, which makes the contentious school-wide disciplinary session feel so victorious when Charlie is vindicated. Hoo-Ah! Scent of a Woman is yet another extraordinary PiB reaction!

Robert da Spruce

Hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day Cassie! I’m looking forward to watching this reaction tonight!

John Drake

16 car accidents !?!? Would love to hear more - were they fender benders or more serious ? 90's Pacino is a real treat (he gets a bit ludicrous in his later years), I think you'd like Carlito's Way, Devil's Advocate (with Keanu), Glengarry Glen Ross (you'll need a full time editor for the Youtube edit), Donnie Brasco (one of the best gangster / crime drama's with Johnny Depp) and definitely Frankie and Johnny - right up your street for romance. 70's Pacino is a very different character - Godfather I & II & Serpico (true story about police corruption where he is very much like charlie simms) would be the highlights. I know a lot of people will want you to see Scarface (mainly for shock value), might be too intense - no happy endings thats for sure

I think that there comes a point in every successful career when you have nothing left to prove. But still, I really liked him in the 2004 production of the Merchant of Venice.

Shaun2342!

Cassie you should watch The Godfather movies.

Stick Figure Studios

Some actor trivia: Headmaster Trask was played by the wonderful character actor James Rebhorn (RIP) who you might recognize from MEET THE PARENTS. He's also in an excellent suspense thriller called THE GAME that you should really see. George was played by the marvelous, and very young, Phillip Seymour Hoffman (RIP) who you saw in ALMOST FAMOUS and TWISTER. Finally, the TV show Charlie was watching in the hotel room was called THE MUNSTERS and the Frankenstein-looking guy onscreen was named Herman: he was played by Ed Gwynne (RIP), the judge in MY COUSIN VINNY.

GamerGal8684

This movie is one of the few that can bring me to tears. The joy on his face when he is doing the tango or driving is immeasurable. ( while i wouldnt recommend a blind man driving) I was very glad to see him win the Oscar for this role. One of the best there is. Salute to you Mr. Pacino.

Stick Figure Studios

Another movie like this one that you might enjoy, Cassie, is FINDING FORESTER with Sean Connery.

Stick Figure Studios
>>83531387

Well put. Cassie definitely went through all of the emotions during this one. Personally, I think the best film she's watched for the channel thus far is SCHINDLER'S LIST, but this was a good one. :-)

James T. Randle

What makes this movie so powerful is that Charlie is the best Point of View Character ever.... The only thing we know about Colonel Slade is what Charlie knows of him and nothing more, and we as an audience experience exactly what Charlie experiences, first we're repulsed, then we're concerned, then we begin to respect him, and then we begin to care... both of Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell were spot on in this one

Grinznmore
>>83558358

Amen. The quick reactions of Frank and his powerful yell is the glue that holds you in the movie. You have a visceral response. It reminded me of Whiplash in that way. Side note. Military and police are taught to develop a Command Voice. A powerful technique. Anyone who went through Basic Training will never forget the Bark of their instructor. That said, watch for the powerful pauses in the dialogue that allows you to ponder. For instance, when Frank stops and turns on the radio and leaves Charlie standing in the room wondering. Also, scenes at the Thanksgiving table. A masterclass in tempo. Side note. Studies of Adolf Hitler found his speeches had such a rapid delivery that it did not allow time for the listeners to digest the content.

I once saw a placard on the back of a truck that read "Caution. Blind Man Driving." Curiosity got the best of me and I cautiously passed the vehicle. On the side was the name of the Window Blind company. LOL

Ry Jo

YES!!!!! I was hoping you would watch this one, great film

Robert da Spruce

Great reaction Cassie! You picked quite the movie to be introduced to Al Pacino. Talk about being thrown into the deep end of the pool! 😀 Most people usually have seen Pacino in other, more subtle roles, prior to this film. So while Lt. Colonel Slade is still pretty shocking at first, we can see him as a character. Rather than the man himself. You, on the other hand, looked to be quite shocked by your introduction to Mr. Pacino. Luckily, Al seemed to have won you over in the end. But I think my favorite part was when you said “H-E-Double…” instead of saying “Hell”! I can just picture you growing up and not swearing. Saying things like “Fudge!” 😂 Just teasing you a little Cassie! 😉 I actually think it’s endearing. Keep up the great work!

Erik Daniel

Had this to look forward to all day at work so nothing was getting to me! I love the fall too Cassie and as soon as the weather and leaves start changing this one gets watched a few times. Now, it's movie time. Thank you. Side note, I think I watched a favorite of yours last night. See if you can guess by just the opening song. "I don't believe in, frettin' and grievin' Why mess around with strife I never was cut out, to step and strut out Give me the simple life."

Ry Jo

watch it again.... knowing what you know watch it again and again... Al Pacino is such a great actor you can look in his eye's and see that he see's charlie is right...honestly watch again and forget the gun! you were so focused on the gun and the direction it was pointed... watch it again and forget the gun look at the eyes! listen to the conversation! you missed a lot by focusing on the gun (yes they want you to focus on it), but watch it again and ignore it! watch the eyes and faces of the actors! watch the emotion in it good and bad.... stop focusing on the gun! look at the eye's watch the acting!!!! for a first timer watching this it's understandable but watch again and look at the eyes! listen to the music! and understand the words being spoken! sure the gun is scary 1st time watching it but watch it again and see the actors go all out! let go of the gun! WATCH THE PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!

Ry Jo

you watched this you know how it ends! now watch it again and look at not what you fear but what you see!

Ry Jo

al pacino does a lot of great movies! I have known his films for a long time, I would say watch this again and then watch "devil's advocate" it is scary it is dark but it shows the caliber that al pacino can be! watch that movie and compare that speech to this speech...

Carol_White

This movie taught me that serious mental illness can be cured in 72 hours. All you need is a friend.

ArsTropica
>>83582638

The irony of your comment is that most psychologists agree that healthy, loving relationships can improve poor mental health.

ArsTropica

“Ah. Well that’s alright, Charlie. Every family’s got one nowadays,” Love that self-reference.

Jason Chirevas
>>83579354

Just to counter this, THE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE is Pacino slumming it in a trashy script. There are probably 20 Pacino movies one should see twice before bothering with THE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE.

ArsTropica
>>83579354

I have to 100% agree with this. Shouting and acting aren't the same. Sometime in the 90's, AP invented the "Big Boy Caprice" persona and then rinsed and repeated it in half the movies he's done since. Still, there is no denying that awesome talent. When he chooses to bring it...

GamerGal8684
>>83582638

And to be honest, this shows that one good friend is far more beneficial and valuable then many so called friends.

James T. Randle
>>83582638

If you thought this movie portrayed Col. Slade as being "cured" then you missed the point of the movie

N M
>>83521312

Plus all of his comments on their scent refer to their perfume brands.

N M
>>83582638

But Colonel Slate wasn’t mentally ill…

James T. Randle
>>83582638

He was clearly depressed and depression is classified as a mental illness... I'm sure that's what she meant

Cole Jennett

Donnie Brasco is another great Pacino performance. My favourite of all of his movies!

Johnny
>>83690639

YES! Donnie Brasco was really excellent, and Pacino played it perfectly (so did Depp). I think Carlito's Way is another great one.

Shyam Nair

You should definitely watch the Godfather. Al Pacinos most iconic role :)

ArsTropica
>>83795231

It's fair to say that he was at the height of his powers in the Godfather Pt. II.

Matt Mabry

You got me at the end with the Hooaah!! It's a Ranger and now a special operator expression. Of course my other favorite is "Double Jack Rocks!!" The tango scene is one of my top five of all time. Did you know Pacino won the Best Actor Oscar in 1992 for this role. Ok, and I know by now you have heard about all of the other great Pacino movies, but it does start with The Godfather. Time to go to the mats and watch the best. Love ya Cassie. You are the best.

Jeremy T Edwards

I'm trying to go full screen on your reaction here. And can't. Whhhhyy?

Paul Hess

I'm new to your Patreon because after a few minutes of your reaction to Scent of a Woman on Youtube I said I have to watch your reaction full length instead, and I really enjoyed seeing this excellent movie (one of my favorites) as new through your eyes. Thanks for posting this and I look forward to discovering some of your other content.
