I've always wondered - why did she get referred to as 'Empress Matilda', but no other English monarchs were called 'emperors or empresses' until the conquest of India?

It was because Empress Matilda was the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. Matilda was never crowned Queen of England because her attempt to be crowned at Westminster collapsed in the face of bitter opposition from the people of London due to her arrogance and tactless demands for money provoking the citizens to chase her away to Oxford and possibly also because she waited four years to be crowned Queen during which time her cousin Stephen was crowned King with absolutely no reaction from her at that time.
