(NOTE: I wanted to put this video up for everyone, but the rest of this series will be locked to the 5$ supporter level - mostly because I think this kind of thing is a pretty deep cut that not too many folks will be into).

I thought it would be interesting to document more of our recording process, so we'll start here - with Black Wing.

I'm really not sure how other people record or write song. That sounds somehow like I'm trying to sound "cool" or something, but I'm really not - I actively have no idea how other people make electronic music. I bought Logic back in the day because it was one of the few recording programs that worked on the Mac I owned. It was similar enough to Garageband that I "got" it relatively quickly, and - like I do with almost every instrument I've ever played - I immediately jumped in and started fucking around.

There are probably hundreds of functions in this program that I would use if I knew they existed - but whenever I sit down to try and master the actual program itself, I just end up making music instead.

As such, my recording process is messy, frustrating, and inefficient. But I like it - sometimes, that kind of approach produces interesting mistakes, the kind of stuff I never would've written had I known what I was doing. Many of those mistakes - the off-kilter bass loop in "Bloodhail," for example - are some of my favorite bits and pieces, now.

So, I still keep my mistakes and fuck ups, and record around them. It makes things unpredictable, more "alive," - keeps me from being too boring.

You should live stream your recording sessions

The Legrand Society

I've thought about it - just hard to live stream and record and the same time. Not sure my old comp could handle that.

this is so great, psyched to see where these videos go

I'm so relieved to see our writing and recording styles are pretty similar, I always get worried im doing it wrong ahha

The Legrand Society

haha...yeah, no such thing as a wrong way. Just your way. In a sense, the more "wrong" your style is, the better. Nearly everything that people like or think is unique about us right now started with trying to find some way of overcoming limitations (case in point: we used a lot of reverb in the beginning because we were trying to get rid of the hissing sound picked up by using the built-in computer mics to record)

Bradley Walford Davies

that's immensely interesting! I always figured it was just because reverb sounds great with that style of music. Thanks for the recording philosophy also, I know a few people who could do with hearing that ahah

Sebastian Balocca

Thanks Danny boy. Can you go into your set-up a bit. I get that you use Logic, Kontakt, and Midi controller. What about your computer specs?

The Legrand Society

I use a 2013 imac. It's got a 3.5 ghz intel processor, 32gb ram. Nothing super fancy. It's started chugging a bit lately.

Great session, thanks. As for the process I love to think that creativity driven by discovery is really something to go for. So, keep it messy I guess. :)
