JINX - final + process (AND WALLPAPER!) (Patreon)
Content
Hi there patrons old and young.
This is my final version of jinx which is actually hard to distinguish from the previous version which I disliked. I was upset with the lack of back leg (and other things) and so I experimented with options of a back leg and eventually made a back kneeling leg and then just kept both versions. I also had a version with a back crouched leg but it was hard to read with the stripes of the pants and I didn't feel like bringing it to finality.
Anyways it started with a sketch as all drawings do. I actually had three different levels of sketches he haw.
I was originally gonna draw her in despair in JAIL but I didn't want to cover all my hard work with hair... So I made her generally at war with her psyche.
Then, these days I've been doing a drawing process where before anything render-y or before the final lineart, I make sure my silhouette is clean and crispy. This usually entails lassoing a big shape for their silhouette (usually with lots of straight geometric shapeness) OR filling in the background FIRST, on top of all the other layers. That's what I did here. So I fill in the background, put that on top of my sketch, ink ON TOP of the background, and color on top of the sketch, under the background.
Very confusing.. here is this "initial" stage AND a diagram:
So then I keep rendering color, finding the final colors, and cleaning them all up.
I don't know how I got here from the last stage. Perhaps orange layer with color burn blending mode.?
Then I tweak the colors a bit more in the end. Pants a bit more purple than red, and more orangey pink on the skin. ALSO, the background is slightly transparent so the sketchy color will pop out around her!
Generally in my mind, I like to keep imperfections in my art, so if two lines in my lineart overlap I like that, or two lines meeting aren't cleanly joined. In my coloring I like a textured brush that shows the color underneath it... I like the background to not be perfectly homogenous. Things like this... wonkiness.
Then I draw the little stickers which is like the exact same except each sticker is its own little object with its own silhouette shape with color on top, and lineart. The lineart is colored as well to make it less harsh.
For finishing, I put a paper texture over everything and a halftoney texture over the stickers, both from True Grit Texture Supply! I also tweak color balance and stuff in lightroom.
Here is an alternate stage that had a black background and the final once again:
That's all! Wallpaper below!!
