Helldivers 2 - final + process (Patreon)

Hi winners,
These are some high value images of my latest helldivers drawing that I did.
This is a 16x20" PAINTING actually, I used liquitex acrylic gouache and it was an interesting endeavor. To me it felt like...familiar. Idk this is sorta exactly the same way as I draw digitally except my understanding of what color I was putting down was even worse. But nothing really shocked me to my core. It felt familiar but more annoying.
What I ended up doing first was sketching it out digitally. Im a digital sketcher and a transfer-paper-er. I actually sketched out a man within first and then drew the armor on top. It makes the proportions make more sense to me than a formless armored creature.
Orkay and then I drew his armor (you can see all the images above in higher detail) and put other little doodads around him that are relevant to the game. This was a drawing for my brother and I put his armor he likes and his favorite gun.
Then, I painted my entire canvas (irl) orange and transferred my drawing on top. I print it out to the size I want, put transfer paper under it, and trace over my drawing onto the canvas. This is the result:
Then, I began to put washes of color all over. His suit is literally all black with just a few yellow accents, so I wanted all the different areas of black to be more gray and with varying darknesses and hues. So I used different opacities of black, green, and blue. The result was as follows:
I painted the shadows with an almost black color, and I always let my palette get a bit messy you know this allows color homogenization. ALSO, my sketch layer did get activated by the water and paint but since it was all dark anyways I didn't care. But this may matter to someone.. I then painted the yellow accents, and then I painted the white background! I did the same thing with the background as I did with everything else, I filled it in with varying opacities and hues of mostly white, yellow, green and blue.
Someone on ig said it looks pearlescent and it really does, that is so special.
At this stage, I may have tweaked some areas that were a little too thin and orangey for my liking, and then I inked on top with a waterproof brush pen. This was pretty straight forward, except I had to add a new ink cartridge to my pen and it made it too heavy of a flow and that pissed me off so some more-detailed areas are felt tip brush pens.
I used an oil pastel for some details on the outside for a rustic feel, if you will.
And that was that. I framed it in a light wood frame... its quite nice. Is there a varnish for this? I think I won't use it even if it exists due to the mixed media nature but idk maybe in the future.
That's all! ta ta
