Chainsaw man! This series is a wild ride for sure. I think this show is similar to lot of series I like. It’s very weird at times, but that weirdness surrounds a show that has very earnest things to say at heart about people, dreams, desire, and what it means for people to have goals.

JT

Alright, time to get started. Chainsaw Man is easily the briefest of any anime adaptation that's made it's way to ya'll so far, with less than a third of the source material being animated at this time. I wouldn't call myself a "hardcore fan", but my history with this series does give it something of a special place in my heart. Throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, I had been exposed to CSM every now and then through memes and fan animations. Didn't manage to get any of the story, but I did end up seeing its characters come up more and more in online circles as the manga continued its run. Exposure that only increased after the anime was announced back in late 2020 and began overflowing when Fall of 2022 was set to be the anime's debut. Having finally had enough of feeling out-of-the-loop, I decided to pick up the first volume, making it the very first manga I'd ever bought with my own money as well as the first I've ever made a point to read before watching the anime. As a simple young man in his late teens who had just barely started college, the very premise of the first chapter being a broke young boy ending his captive relationship with the yakuza by using chainsaws coming out of his body to kill zombies and devils was enough to immediately win me over, if not only for the reason of, "bro this is metal af holy shit". The absurdity and characters of CSM were incredibly entertaining and got me buy the rest of the series (it was published up to volume 11 at the time), and led me to discover that the Shonen Jump app existed when I needed a way to read week-to-week (a revelation that pissed me off bc I coulda saved so much money with it lol). From that point on I kept up with it on and off until chapter 212, unknowingly getting distracted from finishing it just 20 chapters short of the series finale. Having seen the discourse surrounding the ending as well as watching CSM win the Patreon poll, I decided to read through the entirety of the series again to get a more holistic view on CSM. My recent experience with AoT allowed me to see that an ending can land VERY differently for someone who does not have to carry the emotional weight created by years of keeping up with a series, so I wanted to see if something similar was happening with CSM. Finished it up a couple weeks ago, and yeah, I can certainly see "what" the fuss was about, though I feel I came away with an impression that was a bit more nuanced than what a lotta people seemed to come away with. Nuance that's only been growing as I've just recently finished reading all of the works Tatsuki Fujimoto had created before CSM to try and get a better understanding of him as a creator (Goodbye Eri being especially enlightening). But that's a discussion that's years off from being held on this channel, so I'll leave things there. But yeah, not planning on being "super" loud on this one either. CSM's history is comparatively short to most of the other manga/anime series that've been featured on the channel, so there's only so much I can really add in terms of trivia. But we'll see what happens.

JT

So in my time here as a community member, I've made mention in previous journeys about how absurd media like Chainsaw Man is the result of "mildly insane" individuals getting their hands on a pen and production budget, and that it kinda vexes me when people look at things like it and start asking questions like, "were they high when they made this?" or "was it happy hour?" Growing up with the vast ocean surreal content on the Internet and the many strange animated shows created throughout the late 2000s-2010s allowed me to quickly become accustomed to the idea that some creators just happen to have a certain brand of underlying "brain damage" that allows them to come up with wild shit, and that chalking such insanity up to them having to be on something is doing them a disservice. As such, it is pretty damn difficult to come across content that something that genuinely weirds me out. But listen to me, there is nothing "mild" about Chainsaw Man's creator, Tatsuki Fujimoto. Mangaka tend to have their eccentricities about them, but let me be the one to tell you this guy is something else: He makes a habit of trolling manga popularity contests by voting for the most obnoxious characters possible. He once made a Twitter account where he pretended to his own imaginary 8 year old little sister who would leak out manga story ideas only Fujimoto and his editor knew about, causing his editor to try taking legal action against the account since he didn't know it was actually Fujimoto. While he doesn't let reader feedback influence his work too much, he has said that if someone on social media says his character "should go right", he would naturally feel compelled to make the character "go left". He used to draw pictures as a child, and when he was in middle school, he imagined a manga serialization in his head containing around 7 of his own manga. He continued this imaginary serialization until all of his manga ended (in his head), and he was so emotional that he broke down at the end of middle school. As a teenager, he was a neet who found it hard to work normally in society through part-time jobs, so he was always hungry and developed a habit of eating anything he could find. He would often live off of prize money he won from drawing contests. When his pet fish died, his girlfriend at the time suggested he should bury it. Feeling bad that ants were going to scavenge the fish's corpse, Fujimoto instead decided to eat the decaying fish w/o telling her (which ended with him getting an upset stomach). When he was in college, there was a girl who was often mean to him. One day, Fujimoto had noticed his bike was on the ground. As he wondered what happened, the girl said to him, "I knocked your bike over, hahaha!" Instead of feeling bullied, Fujimoto was elated. This experience led him to realize domineering and irrational women were his type. His fellow students in art school would question his mental state because Fujimoto repeatedly said, "If I don't get better than them in 4 years, then I'm gonna kill 'em". He also once posted this video online of himself where he tries to levitate: https://youtu.be/BJUbLM8coho?si=BfcM_pn8LjD_-HAN Nobody knows why he did it, but it's become real famous online and there's now an entire slew of vids online of people recreating it. Now, if you know anything about me, it shouldn't come as a surprise when I say: I fucking rock with everything I just said about this man. Guy's certifiably unhinged and down horrendous, and I'm here for it all the way. Fujimoto's work isn't the weirdest media I've encountered, not even close. But I CAN say that he may just be the creator who I've found myself asking "wtf am I reading?" the most with. Guys like Fujimoto are a big part of what drives me to research creators in the first place, and as a fellow guy who gets a kick out of making people think there's something wrong with me by fucking around, and the world letting people like him make it big gives me a sense of liberation lol

Chris Collier

You may have heard of a concept called Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It’s something that a lot of people connect to this show as a sort of idea of what the early episodes are getting at. The idea that a young man who was surrounded by gangsters and was absolutely destitute, would have no idea of how to even be a person. This level of poverty can really stunt a person’s growth. I mean we see this even in our world, people in communities of extreme poverty are often less able to have access to therapy, tools for self healing and betterment, and other things. This is not to say poor people are evil. But it’s hard to get someone to unlearn patriarchy when they’re busy trying to make $4 stretch for a week, y’know?

JT

Something else that draws me to Fujimoto as a creator (in addition to him being a lunatic) is that the guy tends to express his passions unapologetically in his work, most notably his love of cinema. Fujimoto's quite the cinephile, and uses his admiration of the medium to communicate themes and create humor in his stories. I also feel that he's similar to Hideo Kojima in that the two feel like they wanted to be film directors that just happened to end up in alternative careers for whatever reason. The way Fujimoto composes his artwork and paneling really come off like they're meant to be on the big screen. He also includes a little shout out to a movie he likes at the start of each volume of Chainsaw Man. I love when creators do stuff like this because it makes their work feel more personal, and if their passion is palpable enough, it can even lead me to find a greater appreciation for other things. Fujimoto makes me want to stop being someone who's in the dark on like 80% of film history lol But anyway, Studio Mappa decided to represent Fujimoto's love of film in CSM's intro. You're probably gonna be hearing this a lot, but the opening animation actually consists of a bunch of shots taken straight from movies, just reenacted with CSM characters. You two are way more familiar with cinema than I am, so I figured ya might like to try your hand at figuring at which shots are from where. I've made this list of the movies and scrambled the order in which they're referenced to make it more interesting: * Pulp Fiction * No Country for Old Men * Attack of the Killer Tomatoes * The Big Lebowski * Once Upon a Time in Hollywood * Constantine * Don't Look Up * Reservoir Dogs * Fight Club * The Texas Chainsaw Massacre * Jacob's Ladder

Chris Collier

Ah Denji, an example of a horny character done right. He wants to touch boobs, but like so many other pervy characters he understands consent, boundaries, respect. Pretty good for a 16 year old with nobody to really talk to for half his life. And I can imagine the Yakuza he was around don’t exactly speak about women in the most respectful way, so good on him for shaking all that off.

JT

BTW guess now would also be a good time to note the fun fact that Tatsuki Fujimoto and Gege Akutami (creator of JJK icyf) have gone on record in interviews and whatnot that they have a mutual respect between each other as creators. This drawing of Kugisaki down below was made by Fujimoto.

Im so glad that Chainsaw Man won the poll, it's very different than what you have reacted to so far, so this is going to be an amazing ride! Its one of my favorite animes/Manga. It really explores the emotional side to Denji, while still having gratuitous action scenes and great animation. Sadly, this Anime was received very poorly in Japan, with the producers even having to come out and apologize. They made some adaptation choices, that were not too bad in my opinion, but the Japanese fan base was very particular and hopeful for this anime, so it was reviewed more critically than most. This is one of the few shows where the Manga source material is much more well known than the Anime adaptation.

KenBoCole

I like how this show addresses Denji's sexuality and desires. As I am sure you know, being 2 weeks ahead, that sex seems to be one of Denji's motivating factors for life, especially his obsession with Makima. However, I'm also sure that yall are probably realizing that Sex isn't exactly what Denji is after, it's love and affection. The reason I'm making this comment so early, is because I love how they start alluding to that even now, in episode one! That scene where Denji tells Pochita his dream is to have a girlfriend, that he just wants to play games with and cuddle to sleep. He wasn't thinking about sex, but companionship. We see in this episode that Denji grew up without any loving parents, abusive guardians, and no friends. He is a child, starved for attention and love. He has started to equate love, something he has never experienced outside his bond with Pochita, with Sex. Most likely due to the media he has watched, and his own teenage horniness. One of the best things about chainsaw man is watching Denji grow up as a person, and come to realize what he actually wants. Not necessarily sex, but just someone that loves him, and he can love in return. Unlike most anime with "Pervy" MCs are characters that have their horniness played off as a joke, its actually a character device!

KenBoCole

One of the saddest things about this show, is that Japan actually has a really decent childcare system and social services, and that the Yakuza do their best not to interfere with the government. If Denji had gone to the police, explained his situation, he would have been protected and taken care of and placed in social services. It would not have been even remotely worth it for the Yakuza to track him down over that, they would have just forgotten about him. The problem is that Denji didnt even know that was an option. That's how bad his childhood was, and how much control the Yakuza can have over the people in their sphere of influence.

Quito

It's been a while since I saw any Chainsaw man. Can't wait to rewatch it with you both, I'm sure you'll love this show and characters as it goes along. But I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

JT

Ok, this is my first time watching the dub. Linda Young was certainly not who I thought they'd get for the Zombie Devil lol, though I don't hate it. As a reminder, she's the English VA for Fortuneteller Baba and the first to voice Frieza in earlier dubs of DBZ (before Chris Ayres and Daman Mills would succeed her later)

JT

20:25 My unhealthy obsession with the sound design on the chainsaw grinding through the tendril here hasn't left me even after 4 years

Yoshitsune

Can’t wait for you guys to watch the movie after season 1 <3

Yay! Big fan of Suzie Yeung (Makima), and I'm glad you're listening to the end credits since they change the song for each episode in s1. Dunno whether it's because of this being my 2nd watch or just knowing others are watching it with me, but i found e1 very touching and it choked me up with Denji and Pochito's relationship. Denji is yet another "simple" MC, in terms of his life goals, but he's a genuinely kind person and it feels good to see his life improve.

Here’s a few facts about Tatsuki Fujimoto, the author of CSM. To have a peek into the mind of who would write a story like this. Fujimoto speaks IRL exactly like Denji according to the author of Jigokuraku. The quote given is 「そのためだったらよぉ」which is suuper laid back Japanese. He's a nutcase / prodigy according to the majority of the Japanese audience. He used to draw pictures as a child and when he was in middle school, he imagined a manga serialization in his head containing around 7 of his own manga. He continued this imaginary serialization until all of his manga ended, and he was so emotional that he broke down at the end of middle school. When he was in Art College, he was involved in an incident where a female student had flipped Fujimoto's bike upside down in the bike parking area. That girl walked straight up to Fujimoto and admitted "I turned your bike upside down! HAHAHA". Instead of feeling bullied, Fujimoto was over the moon. This had led to him self realizing that he is a Masochist and likes overbearing and unreasonable attractive women. When he was in Art College, his mentality was often questioned by his peers because he repeatedly stated "If I don't get better than them in 4 years, then I'm gonna kill 'em". He was almost sued by his own editors for creating the Koharu twitter account and leaking story ideas of comics that only he and Fujimoto knew, but the editor didn't know that Koharu was Fujimoto himself

JT

Oh yeah rq trivia nugget that I just recalled: Fujimoto based some of Power's personality off of Eric Cartman from South Park. He's also said that Denji and Pochita's relationship was inspired by Finn and Jake from Adventure Time (which I don't really see, but hey, man said what he said) edit: Oh and in case nobody's told ya'll, South Park has something of a niche following in Japan. In case you've ever wondered if they argue about western animation like mfs do with anime here in the west, look no further: https://youtu.be/lyJrpklERKA?si=RNk5jAgXGOXY87S6

One of my fav series currently on volume 16 and it's been amazing Its interesting to say the least especially early on The whole concept of how strong a devil is is related to how popular the fear is which is super cool

JT

The manga chapters episode 2 adapts initially had a scene before Denji and Makima start eating together. An injured man begs for their help, claiming a devil took his daughter. Makima sends Denji out to handle it. Denji finds what looks to be the girl and the "Muscle Devil" playing in the woods. As Denji tries to kill the devil, the girl says it actually saved her from her abusive father. Hearing this, Denji suggests they all leave together since Pochita led him to think there can in fact be "good" devils. It's then revealed that the Muscle Devil was just controlling the girl, after which Denji turns into Chainsaw Man and kills it. Guess Mappa took it out bc of pacing reasons since they planned on just having a 12 episode season. Edit: Also since we're coming off the heels of Death Note and the stipulations with that show's production, I guess I should stress that this is pretty much the greatest extent as far as story being cut.

JT

45:16 "do we really need to see this?" saying this only at ep 2, ya'll are NOT prepared lol

JT

56:00 oh c'mon now, obsession with boobs doesn't die at 12 lol (tbh that's probably when it's at its highest)

JT

Might be easier just to call Hayakawa by his first name, "Aki" (pronounced the same way it reads). Rolls off the tongue easier.

MadeByMali

This is a very well written series imo. The mangaka Fujimoto is absolutely goated and I love almost all of his work. That said, I would say it’s fairly divisive among audiences. A lot of people think it’s too sexual/horny and they say it’s shallow and edgy. I thoroughly disagree. The sexual elements of this show tie very deeply into the themes that are being presented. Denji is one of my personal favorites as far as protagonists go. Again, very divisive. A lot of people consider him shallow and not what a protagonist should be. I think his character is extremely nuanced though. I don’t wanna get too into it because I wanna see you guys watch more and form your own opinions but I do love what he represents as a subversion to the typical shonen protagonist.

JT

So the others have beaten me to punch about several times over about Denji's character and how he stands out writing-wise from other Shonen MCs, so I'd like to articulate the same sentiment when it comes to his actual character design. By now you've probably gotten a good enough understanding of what image protags in Shonen manga/anime tend to follow: A friendly but confident young man who is typically wearing a big bright eyed expression. Y'know, your Goku, Naruto, Luffy, Deku, Tanjiro, etc. type of guy. Denji is not that "type of guy". His eyes have this sleazy, slanted look to them that always make him seem kinda out of it. He's often depicted in poses where he has a slouching posture to some degree. He has these super angular spiky teeth. He looks like the type of character an editor of Shonen Jump would turn away immediately because he looks too much like a villain or a punkass, yet Denji somehow made the cut anyway. A guy who isn't where he's supposed to be. I love it.

Logan Prime

Someone may have already mentioned but the scenes in the opening are all famous scenes from classic films. A nice homage. Pretty fun show, caught me by surprise. The movie came out last year which was also really fun with season 2 confirmed as well.

jk

delete this, this is a spoiler

And thats the last time we see our boi intro is decent tho

Ash

All admit, the English version really fits the anime. They add more to their characters in the sense that they are cursing more and act more like their age of young people. Something we sometimes forget is that these characters are in the younger side but they act more like adults in the show. I like how they portray Denji as someone his age. This is actually the first anime I’ve seen in Spanish just cause it gives them even more humor

Brendan Wong

If you're wondering where the name Pochita actually comes from, it's basically a clever play on words. In Japan, "Pochi" is the ultimate classic name for a pet dog—kind of like naming a dog "Spot" or "Rover" in English. The "-ta" part at the end is just a cute suffix people add to names to make them sound extra adorable. There's also a pretty cool fan theory that the creator mixed the name Pochi with Makita, which is a famous Japanese brand that makes actual power tools and chainsaws.

Me

30:44 Oh YES i am so glad Bathany already caught that about Denji, he is often portrayed and talked about by fans as being extremely dumb in all ways, and like sure he isn’t academically smart that’s obvious but that’s due to his upbringing, still Denji is astonishingly emotionally intelligent for someone in his situation, sure he doesn’t always listen to his gut instinct but hey that’d be getting into spoiler territory and that’s a definite no-no lol, so yeah no talking about his future actions until in a few weeks when y’all have watched all of Chainsaw Man but man im so glad that Bethany pointed that out, be it Denji’s complicated relationship with and perception of love & sex or his intelligence so many people completely misunderstand his character and it’s nice to see y’all on the right track to getting him from episode 1 already :).

Jennywocky

SOOOO glad you guys are loving CSM, I could see the joy and amusement on your faces and you laughed quite a lot. Which is good, because this is a crazy-funny show some of the time. (But don’t sell it short – it’s not afraid to go dark.) Denji can be a horndog, but he doesn’t bother me in the way Mineta does. All Mineta EVER seems to obsess about is sex. Denji meanwhile is about more than that. While his current quest IS “boobs,” there’s more depth to him, and we know he will also move on once he gets that, to find something else he has yet to experience. (So it’s not about SEX per se, it’s about the finer things in life which are just AVERAGE for most people.) The poor guy never even had a decent bed to sleep in, nor food (aside from bare bread, when lucky) to eat. I mean, when he moves into Aki’s apartment, he acts as if he has just gotten a free stay in a 5-star hotel – and for him, that is not wrong. He appreciates everything that most people just consider routine. In a way, this makes him a refreshing character: He appreciates just common everyday existence in a way most of us forget to do. Power is just crazy funny – intense, chaotic, bursting with energy, basically a maniacal bloody killer with super-ADHD. Does she ever not shout her lines? So get used to that. Aki is definitely the straight guy in this little group. I really like him a lot, but he’s definitely kind of broody and intense from losing his family. He takes everything very seriously. Ah, Makima. She’s got everything under control, right? All while seeming so unflustered and low-key. Everyone seems to eat out of her hand. She’s a very popular character, again voiced by Suzie Yeung (who I adore as Vladilena from “86” – maybe you’ll get to watch that sometime). I added a number of songs to my Spotify list from the endings to S1, including the upcoming Queen Bee and Eve songs. There’s some great stuff there. So yes, we’ll finish S1, then the delight that is CSM: The Reze Arc movie, and then we’ll have to wait for the Assassins arc to come out. The movie is one of my favorite films from last year (which totally surprised me); it’s a bit art house, a bit drama, a bit tearjerker, and a healthy oomph of insanely wild action. Like, it will likely blow away all your expectations for it, it is just its own thing. But that’s MAPPA for you. I never expected much from CSM in total (esp with such a simple MC), and I was surprised by how involved I felt by the end of S1 and the film. Power is voiced by Sarah Weidenheft, who voices Tetia from Witch Hat Atelier (another high energy character), looks like Reagan Murdock plays Aki here as well as Olruggio in WHA. Jason Douglas shows up soon, he also voiced Jacque Schnee from RWBY and Heiter from Frieren and Miche from AoT. But most of the VAs here I don’t know well.

Jennywocky

Thanks for that insight, it gives a lot of context. Poor guy.

Jennywocky

btw, you guys were right about Denji's age -- pretty sure he's 16.

Jennywocky

I never remember his last name, I think I just grabbed "Aki" on my first watch and that's how I always referred to him lol. It's a lot easier to spell and type!

Jennywocky

Let's get 'em to watch the first five minutes of Chainsmoker Cat! ROFL (I actually really like that one, it's got Bojack Horseman vibes but a bit less philosophical. I remember seeing how Japanese viewers thought it was disgusting from the grime and hygeine of that first episode, and meanwhile in the US it seemed to have taken right off in popularity.)

JT

Haven't gotten to that one yet. Yet another on the list lol

K Kasher

Wow denji is… JUST LIKE ME I LOVE HIM ALREADY

JT

We gonna have another Morbius situation on our hands when anime-only mfs learn he never actually says this shit lol

Ryuga

Now that you witnessed Power would you consider reacting to the song sung by Denji and Power called Rev up, Power up?

Colton Piper

I’m shocked this wasn’t received well in Japan. Without spoilers (if you can) what were some of the adaptation differences? Also I’m surprised because the movie (Reze Arc) made a ton of money at the box office. Like 100+ million I believe. But I guess most of it could have come from the US.

KenBoCole

This explains it better than I can. The description is spoiler free. Comments not so much. I honestly dont get it, I enjoyed season 1, but the Japanese hated it so much they got a petition going to sack the director and have them reanimated the entire season lol. It got alot of signatures for some reason. https://www.reddit.com/r/ChainsawMan/s/0VKUggZMTc

SuperSickMedia

I really hope they watch the EDs for this show.

JT

Dw, I told em in advance about that. We good lol

definitelynotdefinitive

Well said. We go back and forth with Denji on this as we've been watching it. But really like having this perspective on things as we continue 🙂

definitelynotdefinitive

Thank you so much for sharing where Pochita's name comes from. Love that little devil even more 😍

definitelynotdefinitive

We don't tend to notice VAs voice as often as we should or others do, but really hoping we don't recognize someone as Jacque Scnees voice because it might give us a bad first impression on them 😜

definitelynotdefinitive

He's an easy character to misunderstand and I'm sure there will be instances going forward where we misunderstand him as well 🤗

definitelynotdefinitive

Damn that is quite the reaction to someone flipping over your bike. Poor guy being attracted to that kind of person 😕

definitelynotdefinitive

Interesting. Do you speak Spanish as well or just use subtitles and enjoy the Spanish VA performances? 😅

definitelynotdefinitive

It's true. Obsession with boobs is a lifelong pursuit, but after 12 you get better at hiding that obsession 😜

Jennywocky

I can't understand why lol

definitelynotdefinitive

That makes me like Power even more knowing she is based off Cartman 🤣 I will respect her authori-tay

definitelynotdefinitive

Made a note of it (but my notes are sloppy as hell). Hopefully will remember to get to this at some point watching the show 😅

JT

Idk about that. Knew plenty of people at that age who were more than open about it

K Kasher

HE ACTUALLY SAID THIS WTF HE REALLY IS LIKE ME

Michael Brzezinski

Reminds me of the time this Natalie Fiddler girl kicked this Taylor Hogarth kid in the nutsack when I was in 3rd grade and they were in 5th grade and he made this "O" face and "O"sound like "OOOOOWW" endlessly with holding his nuts and penis in one hand after getting sacked and the snowboard in the other. Did you guys think those hits in the dick were deserved here?
