So look, throughout my time experiencing the many stories of the world of anime and manga, I've have witnessed a LOT of sucker punch "rip the carpet out from under you" type of shit. I would even say some come very, VERY close to what ya'll just witnessed. There are some really wild ass tone pivots out there, some of which I guarantee will make their way to ya in future journeys. But I must say, episode 8's ending "may" just take the cake when it comes to the ratio of shock to abruptness. Genuinely couldn't believe what I was seeing, and that's not easy to pull off.

Great. I just can't wait :/

Yeah, the week-long cliff hanger from this episode was *brutal*. It flooded the anime online spaces for a while lol. One Punch Man had some dark stuff in it, so their was just enough fear that the authur genuinely killed off Mob's Parents. Mob is really about to put the psycho into the psycho helmet religion!

JT

I KNOW RIGHT?!

KenBoCole

Go Mob! This was his first real race, and he fought to the end! He is still a middle schoolers so ge still has 4-5 more races to redeem himself!

KenBoCole

Yeah, it was established early on that psychics can sense other psychics. Mob knew Regen was a "fraud" entire time. All those times Mob was asking Regen to yse his powers was just Mob trolling him lol. We all thought Regen was taking advantage of Mob the whole time, but Mob was just happy to play along and have an adult to ask life questions too.

I probably sound like a broken record on this, but episode 7 really did resonate with me. Being a info science new grad in a world with the tech industry being the way it is now, I've been having trouble finding work relating to my degree, and as such been questioning myself about why I really took the direction I did in life. The answer I usually arrive at is that it just sort of made the most sense since everyone I came across said it would be a good field to get into, and it was something that I could see myself doing w/o wanting to die at the end of each day. Like Reigen, I too find myself admiring Mob as a character since I had a lot in common with him growing up. I kinda see him as what I probably "should" have been, but just wasn't. While things still aren't great now, the characters of this show and the questions they cause me to ask about myself has at least moved me to start moving in a better direction. In the time I'm not trying to make myself a better job candidate and doing my BS here, I've been exercising more and looking for ways to actually live the way I want to. Don't know how far I'll get, but it's a start.

JT

Oh yeah, another nice example of "show don't tell" in this show: Reigen is never shown smoking in his office after Mob came into his life, suggesting he quit smoking for Mob's sake (and by extension his).

JT

"I've known... that my master is genuinely... a good guy"

Apollo

It wasn't mobs birthday, the ones having a birthday were two of the side characters of the club.

JT

24:23 That's because it "wasn't" Mob's birthday. It was a party held for members of the telepathy club and one of the Bod Improvement guys. The reason it sucked for Mob was because Reigen cut him off from social time from his new friends (something he never really had before).

JT

32:11 Bucky tried to warn ya'll

JT

Real quick reminder to watch the OVAs. The first one is fine, but the second is the one I def insist on watching (between S2 and S3).

Ken might be on something at the end 😂

If anime has taught us anything, it should be that happy episodes are omens.....

Antoine Jones

"Reigan should've known it was fake when he was reacting to the salt." Ummm why? If some dumbass was splashing salt on my face and it was potentially getting it my eyes Im sure Id react like that too, and it wouldn't be acting lol

When mob said “I know that my master is a good guy” that really hit me in the feels😭. And good job on Regen for realizing where he was wrong and and saying what he said to mob on tv. This realness to his character somehow makes me like him more.

The way I understood it was that Reigen knew to some degree that the whole scenario was staged — "[...] if i make this look like the real deal, that'll be the cue for the boy to calm down and the studio audience will applaud". Reigen just didn't perceive the malicious reason why he was invited on the show.

Jennywocky

E7: I got rather misty-eyed watching Reigen’s character arc play out. It was just really nice character development, showing an honest picture of an imperfect man who often tried to do his best but who sometimes went down the wrong path. Understanding how he got to where he was – a guy with enough integrity to look for something more fulfilling in life (so he quits his job and just randomly ends up in the psychic business) and who was almost about to quit before Mob literally appeared on his doorstep – is a relatable story, and it’s endearing to see that Mob’s calling him master wasn’t out of a misunderstanding but because Reigen treated him kindly, providing real concern and advise to him, and that’s why Mob had stuck with him all this time -- NOT because he had been hoodwinked. He simply realized Reigen's capacity for goodness, despite all his shade. Their relationship was actually more substantial than we understood at first glance; Mob always knew that, but now Reigen (and we) do too. I agree with Ken that “peak” Reigen would have been able to talk his way out of that public TV spectacle, but he was in a shaky time in his life, desperate for advancement, missing Mob, not really mentally with it, and he ends up getting played. Still, it’s just one more layer of this complex man – sometimes shady, sometimes opportunistic, but also actually caring about the people around him under it all. We see his inner monologue as he regrets how badly he treated Mob, and the next episode we see him show up to jog with Mob to prepare for AND run the marathon the poor kid still isn’t quite equipped to complete. Despite his screw-up’s, he always means to be in Mob’s corner. It was nice to see that other characters cared in turn for Reigen – including Mob himself, who comes back when Reigen truly needs him after he carved out a little social time for himself as part of growing up. E8: Again, lots of great things happen in this episode, a lot of people supporting Mob, who manages to pull off quite the run before his exhausted body just gives out. But it’s amazing he tried as hard as he did, and he showed vast improvement, and it was gratifying to see Mob’s happiness at realizing this. He is keeping everything in perspective, and without cutting corners, cheating, or getting discouraged by the slow pace of personal improvement. Moving into the top third of runners was indeed a big achievement for him. Which makes that ending quite the sucker punch. I know we are all hoping things are not what they appeared to be. But I guess we’ll see.

Crazy spoilers wtf

It's SO cruel of this show after two wholesome episodes to end on a cliff hanger like that.

Awwwww… when you think Mob can’t get anymore wholesome then you read something like that. 🥹

That’s a great start! I remember being a senior in high school and then again when graduating from college having such anxiety about my next move and “getting it right” because my whole future depended on those decisions. Now I look back and laugh at the absurdity of the pressure I put on myself or allowed “grown ups” to put on me. And the regrets I have are when I played it safe or timid instead of taking chances. After economic recessions, a housing market collapse, and the COVID crisis I can confidently say there is no road map to success and security. I wasted a lot of time trying to be someone else’s version of me or living someone else’s expectations. And when I let go of that and started to live for me, wow did it feel great. I wasted a happier person and a better person in general. Do your best to do exactly what you are doing, living your life the way you want to and when the curveballs come just be prepared to adjust your plans and roll with the punches. None of us have a crystal ball so that is really all any of us can do. ☺️

KenBoCole

Lol, it's okay. They are 8 episodes ahead, it's fine.
