Regarding the conversation between Steve and Jonathan I don’t want to be that person, but both of them actually have a point. Steve is right that Jonathan hasn’t tried to fix things between him and Nancy, but I think Jonathan is right that Steve didn’t improve the situation with his so-called "macho contest." And the situation doesn't improve at all, because Dustin didn't tell the truth, and Steve just adds fuel to the fire

S5E2: Can you believe how Mom Wheeler just didn’t even flinch, grabbed that bottle, broke it, and went to town on the Demogorgon? It didn’t matter that it wasn’t even close to a fair fight, she just went for it. As you both mentioned in the after-talk, she started as a fluff character, started to develop into something more interesting – and suddenly this season, we saw a side of her we didn’t imagine existed but afterwards made total sense considering how much we’ve seen from her daughter Nancy. It was a highlight of the episode -- and I’m just glad that (at least for now) it didn’t end up as completely tragic as we’d expected. I’m also pretty much becoming a “Team Lucas” person. He had to work through what he really wanted last season, and decided to give up hanging with the popular kids for the people he loved – and he’s still in their corner, fighting, and his mind has matured so deeply. Here he has put everything together about the dates and what’s unfolding, and he’s got a hold of Max and he’s never letting go no matter what happens. Love that boy. Will is still tapped into the Hivemind – which has some pretty large implications of which we’re starting to see, realizing he can see through Vecna’s eyes and whatever else is linked into it. Maybe bringing Will in suited Vecna’s purpose at the time and made Will feel like a victim (which has hobbled him the last few years, he’s been so afraid) – but that Hivemind is a two-way street, and Will’s starting to realize he’s not just a receptacle, he can be an initiator as well. Well, that’s a remarkable sticker on the van’s dashboard in front of Jonathan – “Haley’s Comet is Coming.” It did come by in February 1986. Chrissy was killed by Vecna in March 1986. Season 5 takes place in November 1987. Celestial convergences, anyone? “Karen – with her wine” – another Elle-ism, lol. That crazy girl has a way of turning a phrase! Steve and Jonathan both make good arguments, it’s a matter of where each is standing. But I agree with a lot of what you said in the after-talk, about how Jonathan is blowing the opportunity Steve wants, and if Nancy and Jonathan are solid, then Steve has no chance… so maybe Jonathan needs to focus on that. But I think you’re stopping too soon in your analysis. For example, why IS Jonathan having so much trouble? People ultimately do what they want to do (inner desire drives behavior, unless it’s being squelched somehow, people can't long-term adequately fake wanting something they don’t necessarily want). For being a couple, Jonathan and Nancy barely seem to … be a couple. Those two really need to sit down once they’re out of this mess and really put their cards on the table and decide whether they are both invested. And it's fine either way, but they both need to be honest and clean with each other. Wow – Dustin’s definitely seen better days. And he basically brushes off what happened back in the cemetery – that’s why Jonathan and Steve aren’t talking to him about it, until Steve finally blows up and tells Dustin he KNOWS he just got jumped by the goon squad. Everyone’s on edge, which is understandably considering how much has just gone down – Vecna is back, the Wheelers have been attacked, Max is still out, Holly’s gone, and no one knows what is happening. So the Steve/Dustin Bromance is currently on hold… (Side note: This episode reminds me a LOT of RWBY early Season 8, when Ren was acting like Dustin and treating Jaune and Yang like crap, Oscar had been kidnapped, and everyone was on edge and angsty. Salem had laid siege to Atlas, everyone was stressed and mad at themselves for not having a better plan, and angst is just blinding everyone. The solution is they all need to relax, remember what they mean to each other, and start to forgive themselves so they can think more clearly – we see Hopper and Elle finally start to talk about why Hopper’s been so edgy, and Will finally gets a little freedom instead of being kept in a cage.) “Great Scott – the Flux Capacitor is broken!” – poor Joyce, she really needed to be watching movies in 1985. But that was about the time the Battle of Starcourt happened, so I know she had other things on her mind… I still think Will needs to be trusted more. I don’t want to see him hurt, but we can literally see what being coddled and confined is doing to his self-esteem. Maybe he can be protected somehow, but just sidelining him 100% of the time is not the best solution, and he's already in his head WAY too much. Gee, how bad IS Hopper’s side messed up? This is the guy who smashed his own ankle 18 months ago and was running around on it – but now he’s got a flesh wound and can’t walk? I dunno. Maybe 18 months back in the Land of Peanut Butter has softened him! But again, I was so happy he finally told Elle what was eating him, instead of just trying to lock her down. Even if he still wants to put guardrails around her, she now understands his perspective a bit better and realizes it’s not all just about control, it’s coming out of a place of love and concern for her – and also some horrible wounds he has suffered in his past. He doesn’t want to lose her like he lost Sarah – and Sarah was a fighter too, yet it didn’t matter. So Hopper is understandably SO worried about Elle. Nancy’s eyes really spit some daggers with that “sweetheart” knock from the doctor. That guy deserves whatever she’s got coming to him. That’s one pretty serious huge slithering wall – all GoT jokes aside… What is BEHIND that thing? Lol… as we all feared… good ol’ Henry -- Holly’s friend was him all along. So one thing that bothered me over the time of Stranger Things’ run is how the Duffers often incorporate elements into their pastiche of a show without often incorporating their essence. This “Whatsit” analogy might have been far more powerful if it had played in some intelligent way off the actual Whatsit from the book, but they just swiped the name and tossed the book into their show as cheap nostalgia. They throw in a lot of stuff over the seasons just for nostalgic callback. Henry is pretty much the total opposite of the real Mrs. Whatsit, who (while first seeming to be a bag lady of sorts -- kind of the opposite of Henry's attire) is essentially an actual reborn celestial star (yes, the cosmos kind, who lost her life driving back the Darkness), and while she’s eccentric and has her quirks, she’s just the most loving, compassionate beautiful spirit I’ve seen in any book. It kinda makes me ill that Henry just takes her name from Holly’s favorite story to lure her into his game. But maybe that’s the analogy – something that obvious, something that banal. Everything to Henry is a means to an end, so to implement his awful plans, he’s inadvertently besmirching an angel who made sacrifices to expunge the celestial Darkness that he never even imagined because he WAS the Darkness all along.

S5E3: First off, I’m gonna note the big credit appearing at the beginning that Frank Darabont (“Walking Dead” early seasons, “The Mist,” “Shawshank Redemption”, “The Green Mile”) directed this episode. So I think that might factor into Ken’s enjoyment of this as his favorite episode so far this season – Darabont is seasoned, has an emotional core to his work, and just knows his way around material like this, and it really shows. (He directs Episode 5 as well.) Gosh, I really want a huge breakfast now after seeing the table spread at Chateau Vecna. (You don’t have to torture me to win me over, just make me breakfast.) “Sorry we should have left a note,” says Robin – well, this is one of the most Gen X things ever, lol! Will stands up to Joyce abruptly, and I think it was time (it was harsh, but it forced the later conversation and made her rethink) – and I love how they get a private moment later, similar to Hopper and Elle, for Joyce to explain why she was so restrictive, because of her past mistakes as a parent she’s always regretted. Sometimes blunt confrontations are necessary to break the ice and reset the conversation. Plus it sets up that great line later when Joyce says, “NOW is not the time to play it safe, Jonathan!” scolding him, while we know she stole it from Will. She IS listening and learning! Oh Holly, sweet summer child – getting a Tiffany cassette was the highlight of your young dreams? That Rambo knife Hopper left in the wall (serrated edge, compass in the pommel, hollow grip to contain fishing line and whatever else!) was all the rage in the 80’s, you could get cheap knockoffs for $5 at flea markets. I hope he bought a better quality one. Henry was raised in the 50’s, so that house was his house growing up – but gosh I remember when the 50’s was “nostalgic” to 80’s people, like when Holly’s throwing on 50’s dresses etc. Personally, I never really shared the 50’s love, but it was common. WOW Bethany – such a wild swing there in the middle about Max!! Let’s see how that plays out! (You know, this is why I love watching these shows with you guys…) The military folks do seem like program dropout wannabes – they’d fit right into some of today’s military mindsets unfortunately. Hey don’t disrespect The Derrick! Ahhhh – the wormhole lecture with the enthusiastic science teacher Mr. Clarke, and Erika’s comment about being able to travel through it without crossing the intervening space (this was another prevalent point from “A Wrinkle in Time”) – just flagging it here so it’s not forgotten. Seeing the teens just walk into the school building by a backdoor – back in the 80’s before they started locking school property even during the day because of gun violence – and later when Robin and Will just rifle through a whole collection of uncontrolled sedatives in a hospital room. Damn, God bless the 80’s! Murray IS a total goddam commando Santa Claus! Show some respect, Dustin! So Darabont’s practiced hand – although it’s clear in the more dramatic moments – also shows during the harrowing interrogation sequence in Akers’ mind as well as that final awesome sequence when the trap is sprung on the Demogorgon. Darabont can do both kinds of scenes equally well (note the inherent humor of the dinner sequence, where people just start passing out), and everything is so nicely edited. That whole car chase sequence after the Demogorgon also felt so much like “Back to the Future” (which got another name drop this episode) – just the low streamline car plowing through fences, smashing the garden gnomes, etc., while watching that number monitor. Oh look, Holly the Brave is going into the woods – yet another kickass Wheeler girl is on the move! It does run in their family. Yes Ken, that was most definitely the game “Ghosts & Goblins!” Does Golden Axe or Ninja Gaiden ever make an appearance?? I think actually it wasn’t Will that gave away their location – the Demogorgon changed direction about the same time Derrick regained consciousness and got his hood off briefly, seeing Robin and the others. Vecna would have been synced into that, I’m not sure he’s yet aware of Will still being in the network. Despite Derrick once again spoiling the hero’s plans, we will brook no badmouthing of Best Boy Derrick lol! Beth had wonderful points on the equivalence of opposite and same-sex attraction. It’s not even an equivalence, it’s just the same thing with an artificial delineation. People share a commonality of how we express attraction and test our feelings with others. I’m glad Will felt comfortable enough finally with Robin to come clean (at least about seeing her kissing) and then asking questions to get his own internal compass aligned. He will feel better about himself. Aaaaaand.... yes, Bethany was perfectly correct about Max, her intuition was spot on! I'm glad they got Max in even before the mid-point. Our girl might still be in a physical coma, but it doesn't mean she's not fighting.

Fun fact, in the scene where Karen is fighting the Demogorgan, she's acting with a person in a mocap suit and is actually stabbing a board. Behind the scenes she even asked the mocap actor to hit her a little to make it more authentic when she goes down. Also it was great seeing Will finally speak up against his mom. Both are right in some ways, Joyce already lost Will once, who has been through so much already, she is right to be worried and to try and keep him safe as best she can, but at the same time he is almost an adult at this point and he is definitly old to start making some of his own decisions and like he said, they can't afford to always play it safe.
