E11: So, unpacking the sh1tsh0w of the final two episodes (LOL) I’m not Team Pike – I would have never made the original mistake she did that got Grog killed, leading to a cascade of other errors – but I don’t think she was wrong about everything. You guys made a decent point that Vox Machina doesn’t necessarily have to stay together to maintain their friendship, sure it was fair for them to want to split up for awhile and just live life for a bit. They deserve that. At the same time, I think Pike was feeling something much deeper in terms of loss. Remember, this is the split where Vax and Kiki ended up together, Vex and Percy ended up getting MARRIED (without inviting/notifying Vex’s own BROTHER, which rightfully pissed him off earlier this season), Scanlon just ditched everyone to be with his daughter Kaylie and become a local rock star… leaving Grog and Pike to hang out in bars and fend for themselves. The others had a life to go back to, and Grog was generally happy, but Pike… wasn’t. Pike’s always felt abandoned – one of her central arcs (as a cleric!) was feeling abandoned by the Everlight. The gods dumped her, the friends she achieved glorious things with have moved on. Essentially her guardian and father figure (technically add a few Great’s to that) died this season. And going after Scanlan and his initial harsh words only exacerbates her own feelings of loss and repressed anger. Then she really screws the pooch and gets her best / only remaining friend (after all, Grog stuck with her when the rest of VM disbanded) killed. I am not surprised she was expressing the feelings she did, no matter how mean, unfair, or irrational they happened to be in that situation. (I mean, she was even right about being the freaking healer everyone wanted help from, but who was helping her to heal?) I can even see why she was like “Everyone else can **** off, I’ll do anything to bring Grog back!” -- it's one of the few things she can control. But like Ken said before it happened, Grog would NOT have wanted her to do that – and as it turns out, he’s the only one who can get through her miasma of pain and reach her heart. Meanwhile, I know the rest of Vox Machina means well and they are SO restraining their actions against Pike (trying not to hurt her) and even trying to listen… but they really did neglect her for awhile and can’t reach her. Grog isn’t super-eloquent (or in his typical words, “I don’t talk purty”), but he’s very cogent here and gives Pike what she needs to get her shit together. I hate to keep doing RWBY call-backs, but we’ve seen this before – Season 9. Ruby’s still dealing with the trauma of failing herself, failing Penny, failing her friends, failing Atlas, failing at being the hero she wants to be. Blake, Weiss, and Yang are also dealing with trauma (but they are dealing better) so they don’t notice Ruby struggling (and Ruby normally is so stable) – and meanwhile Yang is all distracted by finally getting together with Blake. It’s the same thing – when Ruby blows up (and later drinks the tea), they’re all shocked and angry and confused, then super-concerned… but it’s too late. It’s REALLY noticeable how, when Ruby returns as herself, HOW much attention Yang IS paying to her – when Ruby briefly hangs back, Yang immediately notices and asks her if she’s okay. So maybe this reset for Vox Machina will have a positive effect. Sometimes people just lose track of each other or are caught up in their own messes, or friends drift apart by accident, and they need a wake-up call to get oriented. It just sucks that Pike was able to do so much damage because she had veered SO far off the path by the time the rest of Vox Machina really engaged her.

E12: Oh you guys are SO quiet and intense during the happy VM intro! Yikes. It was fun watching Season 4 with you, since I hadn't seen it yet. This was a pretty spectacular “final” confrontation. It also looks like Vax is acquiescing to his fate, he’s willing to die (as per the matron) to take out Gideon, but Kiki saves him by killing Gideon herself. Haha, as they were fleeing, I was saying, “Vex, STICK GROG IN THE AMULET!” to get him through the orb safely – and she must have heard me because she did! And everything is falling into place. Grog is alive again, Pike is back to her senses, Kiki feeds Vax the potion she made to heal him, and…. Well, sh1t. Hello Mr. Lich. “…500 YEARS of careful manipulation….” I love it. Vox Machina did everything they were supposed to do – even Taryon getting them back together to quell this new threat – and yet it just fell into his masterplan. I mean, it sucks – but I love this horrible twist as a setup for Season 5 (as much as I truly loved Infinity Wars to set up Endgame – this is what epic stories are made of). As a side note: I’m not trying to be a jerk, but we just saw everyone in Vox Machina do what Pike did to save Grog – they bent the knee to the Whispered One to save Vax’s life. Do we blame them for making that deal with the devil? Now they are all on the same footing with Pike (well, maybe not quite, as Pike did actually attack them, but GENERALLLY)… But Vax had already resigned himself to death earlier this episode. Of course it’s fitting for him to do what his friends can’t: Tell the enemy, “Get f*cked,” and accept his fate, to free his friends. I think what I recognize the most here is that Vox Machina aren't necessarily your typical heroes -- they're not like Deku, or Armin Arlert, or Mob -- and in fact they are often selfish or self-focused. They're average people who have had power and heroic moments mostly thrust upon them -- but because of their moxie, and commitment to each other, and generally WANTING to do right for themselves and others, they rise to the occasion and take a stand when others cannot or will not. Sometimes they screw up badly, but like with Pike, "They always come back." Season 5 I think is the last (and it would be the final threads in the campaign too). So let's hope we get a great final season and maybe that happy ending (+ Scanlon and Taryon!) that VM deserves.

Did you ever talk about watching The Mighty Nein? Same VA's, just different characters -- and the show is a bit tonally different but enjoyable in its own right.

Knightlight 1414

In case you didn't know, The Whispered One is Critical Role's Vecna. For the sake of the show they couldn't use his official name, but thats the power level we're talking here. I doubt they could've done much at the end there with him having ascended.

Knightlight 1414

Also yeah, the spell that killed Vax was most likely the Disintegrate Spell.....and you really can't come back from that

Yeah I had been skimming through the Game Session synopses after and saw they had labeled him as Vecna in those descriptions... (He looked pretty lichy in E12.)
