Me and the Future Devil bonding over vagueposting about how Studio Mappa will spend the next 5-6 years becoming public enemy #1 for the anime onlys of the world. THE FUTURE RULES! THE FUTURE RULES!

JT

Oh yeah here's another piece of cover art from one of the chapters these episodes adapted, which is also one of my favs in CSM. The style of these colored illustrations by Fujimoto is sometimes used by Mappa to help stylize certain scenes and help set the tone, one of which you'll see in the Reze arc movie.

Denji really returning back to his "nothing but nuts" roots lol. Aki finally got to be on the giving end rather than the receiving one!

I enjoyed this episode alot! The Ghost devil caring enough to honor the dying wishes of her previous contracted companion, by sparing Aki and passing on the message was so bonechillingly sweet. Don't worry, Devils eventually respawn so the Ghost Devil will come back to life, Aki just released her from the control of the blond hair chick.

21:58 Looks like my joke I made back on Frieren S2 about this year being themed after people who can see the future is still holding true. Knew the whole time it would go this long btw.

JT

Angel Devil's a guy btw, though I suppose the movie has already made this known to ya (since I assume you've seen it by now). Yet another character I didn't know was voiced by Casey Mongillo, English VA of Sho in MP 100.

Just a few Fujimoto art appreciation posts here. I have a habit of collecting screenshots from panels I like as I'm reading manga, so with Patreon's new image feature, you can expect me to be doing more posts like this

So a few cool things: Most of the devils you met briefly here show up in the Reze movie, so that will be cool. Also, the Angel Devil is canonically male but like a lot of angel depictions scans as androgynous, and the English dub is by a non-binary performer, Casey Mongillo. I really like the closer music for both these episodes (Queen Bee's "Violence" and Eve's "Fight Song.")

Jennywocky

Lol Casey's voice is so distinctive. Great casting for this role honestly...

JT

Yes, the parallels with Shinji Ikari makes the deja vu come on even stronger than it does with Sho lol

MadeByMali

The movie is soooo good. Can compete with Infinity Castle imo

Luhbabytay

A lot anime only think maki might be evil or just have her own agenda. I don’t trust her in the slightest.

Jennywocky

That's probably a good stance to have lol

E11: Makima. What can I say about her? She’s terrifying. Handing a bag full of eyeballs to a crime syndicate boss? “Oh, we can put them back in your loved ones’ heads, if you just comply…” Damn. Wait until the movie. I love how enigmatic she is, even her powerset, but especially her motivations and end-game goals. I believe she knew the attack was coming, but she’ll never show her cards. Power of course is always a joy. She and Denji are such an enjoyable team, like a screwed-up brother/sister pair (Jessie and James from Pokemon??) that always make me laugh. Future Devil was refreshingly hilarious in its bluntness and enthusiasm, although we’re terrified to learn what it’s seen of Aki’s end and why the only payment was “being in his eye, along for the ride.” WTF. Kishibe’s candor with Makima is also refreshing. He’s a spin on the “grizzled mentor” trope, kind of a battered John Constantine, but he still feels fresh and interesting. And Makima still remains interesting – he calls her a liar to her face and she is unflustered and STILL doesn’t show her cards! E12: I really liked the VA for Sawatari (Snake girl) – she doesn’t always summon the snake because it always eats one of her fingernails, after awhile that kinda sucks. She already summoned it once to regurgitate the Ghost Devil (which then she can control to kill Aki). But the Ghost Devil doesn’t. Not only did the Ghost Devil pull Denji’s ripcord back in E9 to reawaken him (AFTER Himeno’s death), here it gives Aki the cigarette with Himeno’s last message and basically allows him to temporarily kill it. Last sign of affection, maybe? It exudes a touching melancholy. It seems Sawatari was stuck in a binding contract so if she was ever captured, the Snake would assassinate her before she could spill information. See ya, Sawatari. (At least Makima didn’t do something worse to you!) The line you missed when Kobeni is asked why she didn’t quit already: “Our bonuses are right around the corner…” I liked Denji’s responses to Katana Man too – and then that Aki agreed to play “ball tag” later. Aki is usually so controlled and repressed, with his single-minded obsession to kill the Gun Devil, so him loosening up here was like a sign of love in Himeno’s memory (because she would have gotten a kick out of seeing it) and expresses his very human feelings (of anger) towards this man who robbed him of her. And yes, finally smoking that cigarette did feel like honoring Himeno’s memory while also letting her go in a way. (Himeno sometimes momentarily crossed lines but she tried to do the right thing, usually – here pulling back the cigarette with Aki underage). Denji’s dream and the unfamiliar woman asking him if he’d rather be a field mouse or a city mouse is a direct lead-in to the “Reze arc” movie. So you’ll understand soon enough.

As far as season summary: My top five matches your guys' top five. My first watch of CSM, I didn't know what to expect either but by the end of S1 I really enjoyed the show. The film ended up being surprising as well, and I loved it. This second watch with you was just great the whole way through. The concept sounds so silly, but the show (while having goofy moments) was just anything but, due to MAPPA's art and music direction. They even use silence and space in unexpected ways to generate emotions I didn't know I'd feel.

Chris Collier

CSM season 1 was a pretty outstanding project both in art direction, visual style and even the multiple outros. It’s all pretty unique, with some even believing that the art direction actually strays a little TOO far from the style of the manga itself. You’ll see the style shift a bit in the Reze movie.

Chris Collier

I think chainsaw man, like a lot of my favorite fandom posts about it, ride a fine line between being silly shitposts that don’t make sense, while also being genuine statements and questions of topics like self actualization, desire, sacrifice and community

Thomas C

Are you guys going to be reacting to the movie? Because the ending is actually leading into the movie

JT

Yeah they got the memo dw. Should be coming Tuesday
