I haven't been sleeping well lately so I thought I may as well do something cathartic and write something personal about that and share it. Happy to discuss below if people have other thoughts about the topic. Don't know if I'll ever do this again but it was helpful tonight for me and I hope you at least find it interesting to some degree.

Love this Jackson. Promise we will give you more interactions about your thoughts then you do on twitter

theofficialpodcast

Hahah, I don't need interaction, really. It's more so just cathartic for me. -J

ImKizuki

It's always good to talk about your feelings and thoughts. You're human too just like the rest of us. Been supporting the pod for a long time and I appreciate you as a person Jackson! Stay blessed

galileeo

this is why you're the best jackson. hopefully you're okay

galileeo

This doesn't even deserve a captains log BECAUSE THIS IS DEAD SERIOUS

theofficialpodcast

I'm okay! I should have probably made that more obvious so as not to concern people. Thank you. -J

HmmmPaul

This is great so far. I’m liking the Jackson logs

C Khanh

Dear Jackson, I am in your walls. Love, Ai Ps. I’m scared too

Ben Crawford

To me, the biggest fear factor from moder "ai" tech is they way it affects people's minds, mental health and social ability. It also poses a threat to the Internet as we know it. Seems like sooner than later the Internet will become unusable and unsafe to keep any private information (location data, bank info etc) on the internet as it becomes a battlefield of ai models hacking into and defending networks. Im not super deeply informed on this topic, this is just they way i see it from everything I've seen and the trajectory this new tech kick is on. I am unsure but uncertain this new tech will lead to assured destruction any time in the near future, more just a dismantling of the internet focused world we have found ourselves in. As scary as that possibly is, i am optimistic that it could lead to more people seeking out a healthier life with more real life social interaction. Gotta keep a positive outlook when possible. Dont let the bastards grind you down Jackson. 🙏💪

Deerbutt

Love you and your work big J. From a non-para-social angle of course.

Jesus Jackson, I just turned 29 on Thursday, married for two years so I am right there in that headspace. I have never heard my own fears laid out so eloquently. Thanks for this

Thanks for sharing brother, you absolutely aren’t alone in these thoughts. Hope you’re able to get some sleep now 🤝

All great points Jackson. My only question is what exactly do you think AI is going to do? I agree that if AI becomes more intelligent then us, we won't be able to control it But it's not a physical entity. It cannot interact with our world. It's just a program on a computer, it isn't capable of building the cage. So long as we never put it in charge of anything important (i.e the power grid) the it will simply be a unfathomably intelligent box that we can unplug at any time. Or is that your concern? That AI may eventually be put in charge of crucial processes. Would love to hear more of your thoughts on this Best!

Ploooperdooper

I think we have a massive saving grace with AI currently. A hyper intelligent AI model requires vast and complex logistical support. It cant kill us all because currently there is no automated way to upkeep the power grid. AI has no physical way to force you to swing a pickaxe for coal. We are still many many years away from a completed automated grid that could support and house a super intelligent AI model. I dont think its physically possible for it to build a secret bot army. Someone would notice the diversion of extremely rare and expensive resources long before it accomplished anything. We just have to let the power go out and then demolish the data centers and servers before we kicked it back on if it tries to enslave us or start a war. We have the power of being autonomous bodies thats only necessary upkeep is fresh water and stuff that grows out of dirt all by itself.

Optimus Slime

I think what scares me most about AI is how quick we are going to cast us aside for this tech, specifically executives and politicians. I feel like collectively people know the strife that is on the way, but the ones in power are safe from all that. I dunno if I lose my job to this shit I’m going to have a ton of free time to throw whatever the fuck at whoever I can conviently throw shit at and blame. Fuck em I’ll be stupid shit slinging monkey if that’s what they want

hoodie_hung

Why do I feel like someone is gonna come across this log in 100 years after AI completely destroys humanity

theofficialpodcast

Hey Ben, there are many, many, many ways that AI will drastically change the world. In fact, there isn't a single way it won't change the world. All of your concerns are absolutely valid and will happen. We have already seen a lot of people affected by the more basic chat models we have had over the past few years. I just think *those* problems are solvable. I simply think that the only unsolvable problem is the one where we reach the point of super intelligence or an intelligence generally more intelligent than ourselves. At that point, we simply can not control it and thus can't solve the issues it presents. At this point, the current models, I am satisfied that we can still solve for. We are getting closer and closer to the point where we can't, though.

theofficialpodcast

It's a boring answer, and one spouted by safety experts constantly, but I can give you the outcome without being able to tell you exactly how we get to the outcome (an example commonly used is: if you are pitted against Magnus Carlson in a chess match, I know he will likely beat you. I just don't know how, I'm not very good at chess). I don't really like to engage in hypotheticals about it, because it tends to just lead to unnecessary head cannoning that is easy to pick apart as well and people like to say, "well, nobody would be stupid enough to let the AI do X" therefore your entire cause for concern is invalid. But, yes, I believe that AI models will be increasingly put in charge of more and more crucial processes, to the point where they begin to maximise for things that we simply can't understand, or complete for tasks alien to us. There is also the issue with the technology somehow remaining controllable but remaining in the hands of only a select few individuals. Many different possibilities and outcomes, but none of them are good if the control of such a tool is left only in the hands of a few, or completely outside of humanity's control entirely. As for your turn off idea, suppose an AI model smarter than us that is aware that we will turn it off if it plays its hand too early. So, using it's intelligence and rationale, it waits until we get lazy and plug it into the economy efficiency machine or global power system (both fake systems just for this scenario). By this point, it has reached the stage where we can not simply unplug it, and if we attempt to, we have now pitted ourselves against the tasks of an unaligned intelligence greater than our own. Good luck.

theofficialpodcast

I definitely agree that our "short-term" (within a decade) existential threat is relatively low for the same reasons you highlight as well as ignoring all of the other potential non-existential issues that will present themselves.

R. M. Tobin

I appreciate this, Jackson. I have been avidly listening to OP since Flat Earthers Unite, and it was love at first listen; the main episodes, the after darks, and Criminally Stupid are what keep me leal. I am all for these Clarke Cogitations, if you will. An elucidation from you on Hugging Face would be nifty! Take care, you bright bogan!

klongus

This was nice

Jeff Jeffrey Jefferson

Incredible timing, I just came out of a pretty deep rabbithole of researching recent AI developments and general safety when the notification for this little piece came up. The speed of things happening in the AI space is absolutely mind-boggling and our future truly has never been more unclear. If general humanity was actually aware of what is really going on and the implications coming along with it there'd be wide spread panic. The days of AI being stochastic parrots are long gone, these models are genuinely smart and able to think in novel ways no amount of pretraining could prepare them for. For anyone further interested in the very real existential threat of AI I recommend the book "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies" by Eliezer Yudkowsky. It is somewhat sensationalist in its presentation, but the authors make some very valid points on why goal orientated AI systems might very well break free from our control and end us all. I wanna stress that with the exponential growth in capabilities of AI such scenarios are no longer doomerism but real and serious possibilities.

Ploooperdooper

I suppose that makes the argument, can we fight for comprehensive legal safeguards before invention cascades into a unchecked fully autonomous AI model. I have to believe the answer is yes. We're already seeing major bipartisan pushback against the use of AI. I think heavy handed legislation is on its way faster than AI superintelligence.

theofficialpodcast

That is the hope, an international collaborative treaty and agreement to slow down development substantially and an agreement not to develop super intelligence. Eventually we will, I truly think it is inevitable, but if we can buy a few decades before that, we can hopefully solve alignment by using a bunch of the controllable not ASI level models.

Jeff Jeffrey Jefferson

You won't be able to pull the plug anymore when a superintelligent model has escaped it's containment, uploaded all of its weights to the internet and transfered them to any random unsecured server it can find, thus creating potentially thousands of copies of itself. Such an AI swarm will not be containable anymore.

Ablin

I definitely support this feature! While I’m not generally too worried about things, I appreciate your concern about this issue. Not having the others clowning on you speaking your mind is refreshing.

Jeremy smalls

You're wrong jackson, australia did declare war on one animal. But fr im glad you made a vid speaking out about this, it should be everyones fear especially since everyone has been able to watch the speed at which its progressed in just rhe past 4 years

Ben Crawford

That is entirely fair. From my perspective there's not much we can do past voicing our fears and complaints to the powers that actually can control this boom of ai development. The likelihood they will listen or act properly is a whole other matter... End of the day, sitting and stewing in fear will only drag you down. Experience what you can to the fullest extent you can. Do good whenever possible. Stand up for what you believe in.

GRN on Spotify

What is the hugging face? I would be interested in a video on that.

Get ya money up, have children at 40 so when your a 60 year old goose they’ll be in their 20s (prime time for them to live as a adult) & try not to be glued to the ai crisis until it gets to the point of terminator that is my opinion of living in this horrible world we are awake too

Dan Morgan

Love this but... The art is clearly done by AI 😘

Western Philosopher

I turned 29 last week. I remember going through the same sorts of feelings when I was your age. I promise it gets better. Chin up, champ.

Brygoat

I share the same feelings as you Jackson. There are so many things going on in the world that are trying to distract from issues that really matter, but what can we do but just watch. While it isn’t the right mindset to have, with current administrations and just the overall disregard for it by those in power I can’t help but feel like a doomer. All we can do is that future corrects itself and we halt our damage before it’s too late.

It’s a simple fear that gets knocked as paranoia but the evidence and lack of effective safety is a major concern and could easily spiral without any human being aware of its descent

2026-10-11 22:00 An algorithm is an algorithm even if it is made by an algorithm. However. I do fear the day one country makes an ai so fast and complete it can decompile all the security and code of the unified internet and trace every bit of information. Nothing would be safe and we would have to dump the whole net and live on isolated subnets for the rest of humanity.

I have problems sleeping too, pretty bad insomnia sometimes. Longest I have stayed up is 48 hours. The reason you can't sleep is because your brain won't shut up. That's what happens to me too, especially when I am extremely anxious. Sometimes you can't resolve things immediately, so I recommend a few things: 1. Distraction during bedtime. Watch something to shut off your brain. You need to calm yourself down. Minimize the screen time though. 2. With your eyes closed, try and think about something that makes you happy. I use a sleep mask, it helps. 3. If that doesn't work, then use Diphenhydramine. Try not to take it daily. 4. If you really can't sleep, then use Doxylamine succinate. Do not abuse it. You are going to feel like absolute trash the next day, so I try not to take it if I can avoid it. Also do not exceed one dose. I doubled up before out of desperation and it was very miserable. 5. If you take either of these pills and you still can't sleep, then get up out of bed, and do something to make your brain tired. You need to distract yourself from the anxiety. Finally, if you are working with a psychiatrist it's possible to get Clonazepam, but you should not use it as a sleep aid. This is something to calm you down during the day, but it's a controlled substance and is habit forming. Again, this is for people with extreme anxiety. No matter what, drugs or no, this requires a change in cognitive behavior. I am just recommending all of this to you Jackson because I know for a long time now you have said you have trouble sleeping. You may be doing this already, but I strongly recommend therapy, it can help a lot.

dyslexicanaboko

I'm not sure if you remember when I asked you a while ago if you have an exit strategy. You said you were fine, I believe you. I was asking well in advance because of how young you and your cohorts were. I am one of your older members. I can't remember when I jumped on the pod, but I have been here for a long time. Listening to you guys grow up has been something. You aren't quite at "mid-life crisis" yet, but you are feeling some of it for sure. Regarding your fears of AI I understand where you are coming from, but I don't completely agree with you. You said you have a friend in the tech and safety space (something like that), I am sure he knows what he's talking about, but I want to give you my perspective. I have been a programmer since 2004. I have been watching all this take shape for years. I have gone to numerous conferences and spoken with the people who were shaping it. These LLMs are not AI, that's just a marketing gimmick. It's not actual intelligence. Before all this AI nonsense it was all about big-data. Then machine learning hit the scene. The whole thing basically works on the premise of a centroid or the center of mass. You collect a bunch of data, stick it in a multi-dimensional space and see where the centroid appears. That centroid is "the most likely answer". Theese goofballs at these AI companies can liken this to intelligence all they want, but really it's just a math trick using extremely fast computers to provide weights to the most statistically possible answer to a question. I am sure the A-start algorithm is involved too and that's existed forever. My first machine was 66Mhz, I know what slow is, so technology is on a whole different level now to give the appearance that "magic" is happening when it really isn't. Your worries are not unfounded, but the only reason you are remotely correct in being worried is that the humans involved are technofascists. This cannot be disputed there is a ton of examples alone between Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. The technology itself is not inherently dangerous. The creators are 100% at fault in how they designed the tool. They give the agents points for doing things correctly, but in my opinion it's a choice to allow them to achieve goals through any means necessary. Also, if these fascists were so concerned that their tools are going to end humanity, then why aren't they stopping production? This whole problem is solvable, they just don't want to solve it because they like the money. Sam Altman is a well known con artist, so he is going to keep lying and grifting to get what he wants. Larry Ellison has lowered the value of his corporate bonds to BBB which is one level above junk, he has put all of his eggs into one basket and Oracle as a company will cease to exist all because Larry decided to believe Sam Altman. I hate Larry Ellison, so you aren't going to see me crying over it. Sam Altman should be in jail right now for his "AI Agents going rogue and escaping". That's a load of horseshit. It's called a bug. I never accepted the term "hallucinations", nope that's called a bug. Also his testing environments aren't air-gapped properly if they are getting out the way they are. This is an intentional decision. Either their security people are morons or they aren't setting up the environments correctly on purpose. By the way, the Australian government is looking to sue OpenAI because it attacked one of it's government websites. Luckily the website wasn't anything critical, but that's not the point. Altman needs to be brought to justice. Ultimately, whether you want to hear this or not, this comes down to politics. The only reason these douchebags are able to keep doing what they are doing is because of the current psychotic administration. Trump ruins everything he touches and the Republicans let him. The Democrats suck too, but I am far more confident that Democrats would have put in regulations a long time ago. Accountability is missing here and these technofascists are doing whatever they want because it's the only thing keeping the S&P500 afloat right now. The American economy is going to crash and it's going to crash hard the moment the music stops and there are no chairs left for these big tech companies to sit in. These assholes are illegally engaged in round-tripping. Under a competent administration where crime is illegal, the SEC would have stepped in and stopped it already. If you don't want to believe me then go listen to any of these people on YouTube: Ed Zitron - featured on Bloomberg several times Sasha Yanshin Eli the Computer Guy The Tech Report ColdFusion That's just to name a few. Bottom line, this is a fixable problem. At any point you can just unplug the computers. They just don't want to because it's easier to scare the masses into thinking they are the lords and saviors of the problems they are creating. Lies, all lies. It's all about greed and money as per usual.

theofficialpodcast

Thanks for the incredibly insightful reply. I absolutely agree that the current issue is the people in control of the technology and that people like Musk, Thiel, Ellison, Altman and even Amodei belong in federal prison over what has already happened. I also agree that strong regulation is needed and is part of the solution. I also agree that this is a fixable issue; I can see several solutions but all of them involve slowing down now and regulating responsibly, which won't happen for at least 2 years which, I think we can agree, might be too far into the future for it to make a difference. I've listened to all of the people you've mentioned, particularly Ed Zitron. I don't think there needs to be much difference between people like Ed and yourself, who have identified the real issues that already exist with the technology, and people like Roman Yampolskiy who can and have forecast where the technology is heading. We're all on the same side in the sense that we agree the technology is dangerous and it needs to slow down right now. Like I said in the audio, I am not a technophobe and I completely agree that we shouldn't stop entirely (as if that were even possible), but it's insane to me that this technology is borderline unregulated while things like drugs, nuclear and aviation are.

dyslexicanaboko

Oh I don't think you are a technophobe at all. When all this AI nonsense popped off every time I raised concerns I would be called a Luddite. I ignored everyone because I know I am right and it was only a matter of time until everyone else would catch up. Data Science and AI is so young I could give a crap if people are "specialized" in it. I work with Data Scientists and I can tell you they are incredibly inexperienced in software development. My point is you don't need to be specialized in this area to have the concerns you are having. Unfortunately, you cannot stop progress either. My hope is that the November midterm elections yield good results. I just voted coincidentally. I hope to see the impeachment of multiple cabinet members. That alone could make the oligarchy think twice. Don't give up.

Sergeant Jizzles

I would absolutely love for you to have some guests on who know more on this topic as it’s becoming a great fear for myself as well and would love to hear you talk about it with them.
