Hogwarts
–Damian Hawthorne–
So, as he looked at the letter in his hands, he realised that William had come through. Well, not William but their father, the Lord Hawthorne, who’d personally written a letter asking for an extended leave, of the indefinite kind, with the caveat of completing all assignments and attending all exams, all under the guise of a family emergency.
Once again, he was reminded of the utter privilege that most noble pureblood families enjoy in Magical Britain, at least in terms of bureaucracy as well as the monetary aspect. It made sense why most Muggleborns would not accept things as they were right now in the coming future, but hopefully, by then, things would have changed a bit, if not by his hand then at least at the hands of Harry Potter.
Either way, the request was sent, not to Dumbledore but to the Board of Governors, who could summon the Headmaster at will. His father had bypassed Dumbledore and sent the letter directly to the Board, who were more than likely to just rubber stamp the whole thing the moment they read the name on the request.
After all, the half that were in Dumbledore's favour would think nothing of it, just a legitimate emergency, and the other half who were not would approve it out of spite, no matter what reasons Dumbledore might come up with.
Plus, from their perspective, it was not like he was being taken out of Hogwarts. It was just an extended leave, with academic work guaranteed, which should placate the ones who might have sided with Dumbledore if it was an outright removal from school.
In his view, even that would have been approved, had they listed the reasons the school was unsafe, about the troll attack, about the abrupt absence of the DADA teacher, whose status was still not declared to the rest of the school, or to the public.
There was a temporary appointment done, but he was sure it was soon going to be declared as permanent, well, as permanent as a posting in that position could be, given Tommy boy’s curse.
He wondered if he could figure out a way to get rid of that curse? But most of his theories centered around the wider ward network of the school, and even touching that would be the height of irresponsibility, as that came under the sole authority of the Headmaster, being one of the most important things in Hogwarts.
It was probably why Dumbledore fled Hogwarts instead of staying and doing the peaceful transfer of power to the Ministry stooges when the time came, knowing that they would be able to do long lasting, generational damage if they were somehow given access to the Ward network, weakened as it might be.
This being an amalgamation universe meant things might be different here, but he could guarantee that getting rid of that curse, which had somehow persisted after all these years, was not possible without some truly in depth analysis of the overall magical structure of this place, and doing that covertly was impossible.
Either way, he was not going to be here to do that. Maybe once he was in Kamar Taj, he could propose a way to get rid of the curse, once he was strong enough and old enough, as his identity as Damian, instead of the Giant Killer because there was literally zero chance that he would ever be allowed in a school of all places, after all the villainous things he had done in quite the short period of time.
Shaking his head, he destroyed the letter, knowing that it was just a copy of the one that was sent to the Board, which was set to meet later this week. So, theoretically, he only had a week’s school left, and the thought just relieved him so much that it surprised him somewhat.
It truly was surprising how little he’d enjoyed his stay here.
In his previous life, he’d heard many people all but bawl their eyes out when they were in a fake Hogwarts in amusement parks, with people just enjoying imagining themselves in a magical world, let alone in a magical school.
And here he was, actually inside a magical world that was far more magical than just Harry Potter’s world, and in the signature magic school, with all the signature characters that would soon grow up to become the Main characters, and yet, all he could feel right now was relief that he was soon going to get out of this place.
He supposed that it was the same as adults being nostalgic about school but being absolutely incapable of actually staying still for hours on end, only to watch as people somewhat knowledgeable regurgitate stuff that was already present in the textbook. Most people would go mad by the second hour itself. People missed only the social interaction, the social circle that came with the school instead of the actual school.
He supposed that the same applied to him here. Not only was he an absolute introvert who had actually lived in a cave by himself for years, he had also built himself a little Magic Lair, inside which he regularly performed magic that most wizards in the world could never even conceive of, let alone actually try to perform.
It was perhaps why he was so desperate to go to Kamar Taj, even more so after having spent months trapped inside here, watching wizards dozens of years his seniors, dozens of times his weaker, perform magic he could do when he was an 8 year old. Frankly, he considered himself absurdly patient with how long he’d put up with everything, even with zero social interactions.
He kept to himself, did what was required, did not put his hand up for any activity, and was mostly absorbed in his books and his exercise. That was the perception he’d built for himself in the eyes of the faculty here as well as the students, who were more than happy to leave him be.
That worked out in his favour now, because now that he was going to leave for the rest of the year, no one will think too much of it, or raise any ruckus about why he was allowed to leave or why he left or when he was coming back.
It was perfect.
….
...Now all he had to do was live out the rest of the week as a first year student, acting as if he could not perform elementary transfiguration with his wand, which was dead as a doornail, as far as he was concerned, when he could do that in his sleep with a thought, and affect far more than just a small cube of metal or a matchstick.
Still, the seriousness with which Garrick Ollivander had handed him the wand made him reconsider discarding the damned thing the moment he was done with the wizarding world. Either there was something truly special about the wand that he was not seeing right now, or he was being scammed by Ollivander, something that had quite literally never happened in centuries as far as the Ollivander line was concerned. They have always been the steady stewards of wands and the art of wand making in Magical Britain at least and have been respected from both sides of the political aisle in Magical Britain, and trusted by the rest of the world.
It would be ridiculous of Ollivander to try and scam him for just 7 Galleons. It was why he tried, repeatedly to find if there was something about the wand, using all the equipment he had back in the Lair but according to everything he could find, the wand was just a piece of wood, about 3 or so centuries old, which sounded old but magical wood lasted far longer than one would expect, and it would not surprise him if there were five, six or maybe even seven century old pieces of woods floating around the market.
As the wood was set into the wand once, the magical process somehow preserved its internals, and only regular wear and tear affected the wood, and even then, it was supposed to last for more than a wizard’s regular lifespan, which was somewhere around 103-108 in Magical Britain, the average being brought down by Voldemort’s actions.
Man, did Tommy boy f*ck things up for Magical Britain, and not by a small amount. The number of people he killed somehow brought down the national average age, which is a big achievement, even if Magical Britain is a very small community compared to basically any non magical metro city.
Shaking his head, he dismissed thoughts about Tommy boy and went about the rest of his day, attending his classes, eating the food made by the Elves, especially his custom created food that he made them prepare, an extra workload on top of their usual tasks that they actually liked.
Tommy the House Elf did actually give him a side eye when he explained the kind of food he liked to eat and at what time, but the House Elf did not complain at all when the new diet was added to the list of food being prepared in the Kitchen.
There was one odd thing that he noticed, though. Throughout the day, Hermione Granger and Harry were giving him odd looks, averting their eyes the moment he purposefully looked towards them. They had two lectures with Gryffindors today, so he had caught both of them in the act almost a dozen times.
Even at Dinner, they continued doing the same, and it just further raised his suspicions.
If they were curious about the knife he used to ward off the troll, even temporarily, then they were very much late.
Still, he was curious as to what they were up to.
After all, he still had a few more days until the weekend, when William was going to presumably come to pick him up.
Maybe things could become somewhat interesting?
