Hage Village

–Asta–

“Yosh! I am ready for my Grimoire!” he shouted into the air, as Yuno seemed to glide on the surface of the path they were following to get to the town that had the Grimoire tower, forcing him to continue running alongside the Handsome Bastard.

"Of course you are, you idiot. We are of the age where everyone is ready to get their Grimoire!”

“Shut up! I will become Wizard King!”

“I will.”

“No, I will.”

“As I said, I will become Wizard King, and when I do, I will make you my assistant and carry all my stuff.”

“Like hell I will! I will become the Wizard King and force YOU to carry my stuff. Yosha! It will be—AAAAAAAAaa!”

He screeched as he was flung out of the path by Yuno’s casual swing of his hand, though not too far, as he landed on his feet, looking at the bastard just walking on without even looking behind.

Damn him! Looking so cool!

Well, he was not the only one with a cool trick up his sleeve. He smiled to himself before flexing his legs, hearing them creak in protest, as he braced himself against a rock in the ground before jumping forward, creating a dust cloud behind him.

“Wooohooo~!” he shouted in joy as Yuno’s form became bigger and bigger, until Yuno moved forward, and he found himself facing the hard path beneath him. Putting his hands forward, just like he trained, he tucked into a roll before straightening up and repeating the process, jumping with all his might to catch up with Yuno.

Yuno, the handsome bastard that he was, caught up to what he was doing, and after a slight widening of his eyes, just kept on zooming forward. They continued to play the same game of tag until the town was finally in sight. At that point, both Yuno and he came to a stop, looking at the giant tower in the distance. It was the biggest building, and both of their sights naturally gravitated towards it.

“Asta.” He turned to the side as Yuno spoke with a big smile on his face. “Let’s do our best.”

“Yes!” he shouted and nodded as they walked to the Tower, side by side, excited for the future of their magic.

Grimoire Tower

“Whoa!” he exclaimed, his neck craning up as the Grimoiers just kept on going and going and going up, with no end in sight, until eventually, he stumbled into Yuno, who pushed him ahead as he lost his balance.

“Don’t act stupid, stupid,” Yuno muttered as he rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment and followed Yuno into the massive crowd that had gathered here to get their respective grimoires. It was a mix of all kinds of people, and just looking at the gathered people, he got excited about what kind of magic he would be getting.

He could bet it would be much better than Yuno’s!

“Alright, Everyone! Now, we will begin with the Grimoire distribution ceremony. Please approach me one by one so we can get started. Please be orderly and form a line. We don’t want chaos here. Anyone found guilty of pushing or disorderly behavior might get barred and told to come later on. Now, please.” he watched as the old man in white warned everyone sternly before calling forth the candidates.

Slowly, one by one, people formed a proper line and began walking towards the old man, clearly eager to get their Grimoires.

……

….

He watched as Yuno’s turn came, and almost immediately, a gust of wind came out of nowhere, before a storm came through and surrounded Yuno, making everyone take a step back, and making the old man watch with wide eyes, as Yuno’s form shone with a white light. A moment later, a shining Grimoire came flying down from high up in the Tower and into Yuno’s waiting hands.

The moment Yuno closed the open Grimoire, the wind storm around him dissipated, leaving behind a calm looking Yuno, who walked out of the Tower, making everyone snap out of it and continue the process.

His gaze remained glued to Yuno and his clearly special grimoire until he finally disappeared from his vision. He wondered what he would get. Shaking his head, he dismissed the doubts of getting something weak and worthless before looking forward to his own magic confidently.

“Don’t feel down. Maybe you can try next year?” The kind old man tried to console him, but he waved off the man’s concerns, thanked him, did his best to ignore the pity in the man’s eyes and the tears in his own, before walking out of the Tower. He had to look for Yuno, to head back home together.

Father had ordered them to stay together on their journey to the Tower and their way back home, to make sure both of them could watch each other’s backs. Now, though, he wondered if he would be of any help even if someone did come to attack them, since Yuno had obviously gotten the more powerful magic out of the two of—

He turned around a corner, looking for Yuno, only to find Yuno wrapped up in creepy looking chains, held in the air, with an even creepier looking guy smiling and cackling while holding onto–

…Was that Yuno’s Grimoire?

His eyes narrowed as he realised what was happening, and he was not going to let that happen under his watch. A split second later, his decision was made, his leg muscles tensing before he shot forward with all his might, fist pulled back, aimed at the stupid looking guy.

He saw the man’s eyes turn to him and widen slightly before his fist smashed into the guy’s face, launching him away from Yuno. Unfortunately—

“Arck!” He grunted as the man’s magic, which was these chains, had managed to latch onto his wrist and reduce the power behind the blow. The chains then wrapped around his body as well, as the man coughed on the ground, trapping his hands in the magic.

“Asta!” Yuno shouted from behind him, and he felt a gust of wind form around them, only for it to dissipate soon after. The gust of wind was also much weaker than what Yuno could make, even before he got his Grimoire.

“Yuno!” he struggled inside his chains, feeling them tighten around him even more.

“Haha! It’s pointless. Once you are ensnared in my magic, you can’t escape. Escape is impossible! After all–huh?” The man stopped laughing before doing something with his hand that brought him to the man.

“Ah!” He yelped as the man leaned in forward, just out of reach of a headbutt, though, so all he could do was watch and struggle even more.

“Interesting. This is the first time I have seen this. Boy, you don’t have magic. Not even a single speck of it.”

What? Something within him changed at that. It was as if a doubt he’d buried deep within his mind was brought to the forefront of his mind.

The man then leaned back and began laughing, “Ahaha! You thought you could save the boy, but you are a defect. A cripple. A boy with no magic, trying to save someone. Ha! What a cruel joke!” The man said before flinging him to the side.

The impact with the wall didn't even register to him, as he slid down, his mind replaying the mage’s words.

Yeah, he was right. He did not have magic of his own. It was probably why he never showed any sign of magic of any attribute growing up, even when he did everything possible to make that trait come out. It was probably why there was no Grimoire for him in the Tower, even though there is supposed to be one for every single Clover Kingdom citizen.

It was probably why he was not able to land even a single decent punch after training all this time. It was probably why he would never amount to–

“No! I refuse to believe that! Asta does not have magic? That’s impossible!” His head snapped up as Yuno’s words reached him, reminding him of what he’d promised Yuno before coming here for the Grimoire.

“Asta is my rival!” Yuno’s words brought tears to his eyes, as tears gathered in his eyes, happy ones this time. Slapping himself, he got up, hands grabbing onto a loose stone brick, and pulling it out of the wall.

“Sorry, Yuno! I almost gave up right there!”

“Huh?” The evil creepy eyed mage looked at him with interest. With a loud cry, he just charged forward, his hand pulled back, and just as the chains were about to reach him, he thrust the brick right at the man’s head. As expected, the chains topped the brick, and then began snaking towards him.

He dodged the first one by the skin of his teeth; the second one managed to nick him, the third one managed to stab him before he moved out of the way, and he grunted in pain as the chain took out a chunk of his flesh with it. The fourth one stabbed him in the shoulder, finally halting his advance.

Then, the bastard twisted the chain, making him grunt in pain as he fell to his knees. His hand found a small rock on the ground. He clenched his hand around it, ignoring the pain as he felt the bastard come close, likely to gloat. He also felt the winds around him change somewhat, which made him smile as it meant that Yuno had not given up as well.

Well, if Yuno had not given up even when he was wrapped up in the bastard’s chains, then how could he?

The man came to a stop in front of him. “A silent one, are you? No screaming in pain? Boriiing.” The chain twisted further as the man just put his foot on his shoulder, making him grunt in pain a bit more.

“Oya? What was that? I couldn't really hear you, you cripple.” The man then leaned down towards him, the chain still firmly lodged into his shoulder, dripping blood down his body.

“....Not…up….magic,” he murmured to himself as well as the mage, as the mage leaned even further.

His neck snapped up at that. “Not giving up is my MAGIC! You bastard, take this!” He shoved the small rock directly into the mage’s eye, making him scream in pain and drawing pain, having likely destroying the eye entirely. Before he could do anything else, though, the bastard’s chains shot out, wrapped around him before throwing him away in the distance.

He barely managed to roll in time, to soften his fall, making his shoulder flare up in pain as the bastard’s chain had done quite a bit of damage.

He struggled to get up, only to pause as he saw something in front of him. It was a straight blue line that was there in the middle of his vision. He tried to blink it away, even rubbing his eyes to get rid of it, only to flinch and stumble back on his ass; the line kept on coming closer, enlarging at the same time.

“Ah!”

He watched in confusion as the line then changed into text.

He barely had time to read through everything, being confused about everything that was happening, before color returned to his vision, changing from blue to normal. A moment later, he looked down to feel a weight in his hands. The same Giant wheel from before was plastered on top of it, and it looked very worn and ancient, as if it would break apart if he touched it.

“I’ll kill you, you defect!”

“Asta”

Yuno’s and the mage’s screams made him look up to see chains speeding towards him at record speed. He made to stand up, only to wince and stumble, maybe due to the blood loss. Either way, he managed to make his way up and look at the approaching chains, and then at the grimoire in his hands.

“Alright, this is it.” He psyched himself up before flipping it open and looking at the spells he had, his eyes landing on the first spell. His eyes widened as he looked at the mage in the distance before casting the first spell.

At the same time, he used all the strength he could muster to jump forward with all his might, trusting his first spell to save him.

The Grimoire in his hands shone before words simply came to him.

[Multiversal Chaos Magic : SHUT DOWN!]

A blue wave of energy simply exploded from him, covering a large area, and all he could do was smile, as the chains holding onto Yuno and the ones headed towards him disappeared, with the mage’s Grimoire falling down as well, its magical glow nowhere to be seen.

He landed on his feet, just shy of hitting the mage, his body seemingly overflowing with power, before he looked at one of the spells he had. Instinctively activating it, his eyes widened as a pointy object appeared in his hands.

Instinctively understanding what it was, he aimed it at the cowering mage.

“W-What are you?”

“I am Asta!” He pulled the trigger, and instinctively flinched as the weapon carved a hole in the ground, right next to the mage’s body.

“AAAAAA! Don’t kill me! Please!” The mage cowered at his feet, as he smiled in triumph.

“Asta?” He turned to Yuno with a smile, who had just recovered his Grimoire but was looking at it in confusion.

“What are you doing?”

He cocked his head in confusion. “What do you mean what am I doing? I am beating up the bad guy! Now, come on, use your fancy magic to restrain him so we can get him delivered to–”

“I can’t.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

Yuno looked at the situation silently for a moment longer before replying, “

“It’s your magic. Whatever it is that you are doing, it’s stopping me from using my Grimoire. I can still use my magic, but not my Grimoire.”

“Ah,” he made a noise of understanding before looking down at the covering mage and, with great care, knocked him out. Even then, he winced and hoped that he hadn’t done permanent damage.

Deactivating his spell, he looked as Yuno’s grimoire glowed a subtle green before the wind returned to the alley and Yuno restrained the evil mage.

“Great!” He exclaimed before looking down at his Grimoire. It had begun flipping pages on its own before stopping at a mostly empty page, with two rows of text on it.

Congrats for Surviving first magical encounter, Bronze Ticket X1

For soundly defeating an Ex-Magic Knight  as a complete newbie, Silver Ticket X1

“Eh? What is this?!” He shouted, prompting Yuno’s attention, who leaned forward and read the words.

“That guy was a Magic Knight? How does it know, though?” Yuno muttered to himself before tightening the restraints, just in case.

[6 Months Later]

–Yuno–

“Take good care of Yuno, okay, Asta? It is your responsibility. Also, keep writing letters to us every week, or failing that, atleast every month. I know you guys will be busy, and are now adults, so you might not need us anymore, but still….”

He rolled his eyes as Father choked up and continued instructing Asta about the journey, and all the perils of the journey up to the Capitol, and how they should not offend anyone important or even interact too much with the nobles. The kids were all sad, but the whole crying session was done in the morning itself, so right now, most of them were looking down, but no tears.

It helped that Asta was persuasive enough to convince everyone that they were going to be back soon enough. Once everyone was done with their goodbyes, Asta looked at him before they began walking away from the journey, and did so until the village was out of their sight.

After that, they stopped as Asta called out, “Nero!”

A few moments after that, a black bird flew down and perched on Asta’s shoulders, as if understanding what was about to happen and ready for the journey ahead.

A wind current made him float off the ground, as Asta did the same, though there was no visible air current pushing him up. It was simply the nature of his magic. Half the stuff he got from his Grimoire was something that simply did not use magic, or atleast not magic that could be detected.

Some of those spells were always active, no matter what. Like right now. As far as he could recall, Asta had this spell active for the past two months. It was called [Viltrumite], and it was a very potent spell.

It allowed Asta to fly at very high speeds, exert strength capable of breaking mountains, and made his body so durable that he had to use his best spells to even push Asta back. Outright injury was out of the question.

It was such an absurd piece of magic that more than once, he had debated what Asta's grimoire was. It did not have a standard clover emblem on it, so it just ignited his curiosity even more.

“Yosha! Let’s race to the capital, Yuno!” Asta shouted at the top of his lungs, having learned to modulate the output of his voice; otherwise, his full-power shout might as well be some kind of magic attack.

Dismissing the thoughts of the strangeness of Asta’s Grimoire, he rolled his eyes at Asta’s behavior. Strange Grimoire or not, Asta was still Asta. Nothing was going to change that.

“There is still time for the exam, you idiot. What will we do if we reach the Royal Capitol today itself?"

“Ah! Ahaha. Is that so? So, what should we do? We can’t just walk for so many days. I mean, we will be so bored!” Asta exclaimed, jumping around in the air, ruffling Nero, who did not hesitate to make her displeasure known by flying up and hammering her beak into Asta’s head.

“Oww! Why do you do that, Nero?” Asta exclaimed, rubbing his head, as if that was going to cause Asta pain. Nowadays, nothing was capable of even getting past Asta’s skin, if he let someone cast that magic anyway.

Despite his other spells and magical items he had stowed away in his Grimoire, the single most potent spell that Asta had was the [SHUT DOWN!] spell, allowing him to shut down any magical grimoire within his range, almost crippling most mages, as most advanced spells needed Grimoires. And his range was vast.

It only increased with time, and right now, Asta could cover a quarter of Hage Village and shut down ALL Grimoires within that range. It might have been disheartening to anyone else, but it just pushed him to increase his own power.

“Now, come on, we can explore some of the forests on the way. I am sure we can find something interesting there. If not, we can always practice.” He suggested, as Asta’s eyes lit up at the thought of practice.

“Yosha! Let’s go!” He rolled his eyes as Asta simply disappeared into the distance, overexcited enough to fly off without care for the shockwaves he left in his wake. He had to be the one to use his magic to calm the air currents down; otherwise, they would have uprooted the road, the trees, and everything around them.

Once was one too many, and they had been scolded and taunted endlessly about the incident that created the small pond in Hage Village.
