Royal Capitol
–Asta–
He looked at the Royal Capital in the distance, flying in the air, alongside Yuno, both of them wearing the same clothing they were wearing when they left Hage Village, even though they had changed and destroyed multiple sets of clothing during their practice. “Never gets old, does it?”
He looked at Yuno before replying with a smile, “Yeah. There’s just something about it. It is just so….big. And full of people. I can just hear them talking, walking, and doing all sorts of things. Even the sound of magic being– Hey! There is a big sale happening for cream puffs!”
His exclamation was met with a gentle slap on the back of his head, using magic, of course. Yuno was a cool bastard like that.
“What was that for?”
“Just make sure that you don’t crash into the ground with me long before even reaching the Capitol, because your ears hurt.” Yuno mocked him.
“Hey! That’s not fair. You know that is true, and how scared you were at the time. Also, I have trained a lot since then, so it is no longer true.”
Yuno looked into the distance before muttering, “Let’s hope so.”
Scowling at the cool guy act, he just floated down to the ground, Yuno following suit a moment later, as they began walking towards their exam. The first step to becoming Wizard King. Today was the day of the exam, as they had both chosen to camp out in the forest instead of spending money to stay in some hotel. Money was always in short supply, after all.
Ah, He could’t wait to win the competition and go back home after becoming a Magic Knight!

Magic Knight Examination Centre
“Hmm. What an odd Grimoire?” The person supposed to be examining the Grimoire whispered to himself.
“A Weird Grimoire for a weird person,” Yuno whispered from behind him as he scowled up at the bastard, a fact he immensely hated and Yuno continuously gloated over. Gah! If only he hadn’t been cursed with Lil. Anyway, he did get sweet powers in exchange for that curse, so he was fine with that.
Also, “What do you mean by weird? I got it from the Grimoire Tower, just like everyone else!”
A blatant lie, and Father always told him that he was not supposed to be a good liar, but due to his magic, he was one, and after taking a moment, the official was persuaded by him and let him through, calling for the next person in line.
Wiping the sweat off his brow, he looked forward to the actual part of the examination. Hopefully, he would be able to show off his powers and get into a good squad. After that, it would only be smooth sailing until he became Wizard King!
He was so engrossed in his thoughts, blindly following the crowd, that he did not even feel when someone bumped into him. In his defense, it had been a long time since he had ever felt anything when someone bumped into him. Physical impacts barely even registered to him anymore. Just the perks of an always active spell.
Turning around, “Ah! I am sor—” His words were cut off as he had to look up, up and even more up, to finally see the eyes of the man who’d bumped into him. The moment his eyes met the gaze of the pissed off man, who was also like four times his own size, his eyes widened as he apologised profusely, “Ah! I am so sorry, sir. I was not watching where I was going.”
“Brat,” The man whispered, before he felt a hand latch around his head.
“Hm?” He whispered to himself before he was bodily lifted off the ground, or well, the man tried to do that anyway. He anchored himself to the ground, using his flight ability to keep himself from moving. It was a neat trick.
“Ho?” From within the gaps of the man’s grip on his head, he saw the man smirk maliciously, the dark aura around the man only intensifying. The feel of this magic was far greater than what he felt from Yuno during their practice. In fact, he could roughly gauge this to be maybe four or five times Yuno’s magical power. To think that any random person in the Capital could have so much magical power.
Truly, his decision to avoid the Royal Capital until he was strong enough to take the Magic Knight Entrance exam was a wise one. Patting himself on the back for that good decision, he asked the old man.
“Ano, old man, what are you doing?”
“Old?” he saw the veins bulging around the man’s hand as the magic around his body started to concentrate in his hands, only for it to pause as a third voice spoke up.
He turned his head, despite the best efforts of the old man, as a man in green clothing spoke up, “Ano, Captain Yami, we are kind of late.”
Captain Yami?
“Hmph,” The aforementioned Captain hmphed before trying to fling him away, but he did not budge, prompting yet another gathering of magic in his hands, only for the person in green to cough, making the man sigh and finally take his hands off his head. The man left but continued to glare until he could.
Shaking his head, he continued to the venue. What a weird old man.
He reached the venue and located Yuno’s location based on his unique heartbeat, but was unable to see him because he was just too damn short to look past the other people. A tap on his shoulder made him look behind, only for Yuno’s Wind Magic to smack him on the head, making him scowl at Yuno.
He will have his revenge!
Also, since Yuno already knew he was here, there was no point in trying to muscle his way to the front anyway. Who knows what kind of noble he might offend by doing that?
So, they watched as all the captains arrived, one by one, until he saw an empty seat. Huh.
Weren't there supposed to be Nine Captains for Nine Squads? Why was one empty?
Ah! They were probably defending the Kingdom and couldn't be back in time for this, so they were probably doing their duty! The thought of one day sitting on that chair and doing the same made him tremble all over, as he refocused on the proctor who was announcing something about the exam.
Just then, a swarm of black birds dove directly towards him, swarming him endlessly. It was as if he had destroyed their family home or something, as they did everything they could to hurt him. Thankfully, no matter how many came, they were unable to get past his skin. His clothes, however, began getting holes, and he could not allow that, so a small snap of his fingers created a shockwave that pushed them all away. After that, they did not bother him, but went ahead to bother everyone else.
Interestingly, Yuno had none around him, while the others had maybe one or two around them.
“The exam will be divided into multiple sections. The first one will be…..”
And so, he followed the people as they were sent to the first portion of the exam.
The flight portion was very easy. He had to use magic to fly using the broom. He just stood on the broom and flew in the air, using his legs to hold onto the broom instead of the bottom pushing him up.
It got him some odd looks, but he passed the test just fine.
After that, there was a magical power test, where someone had to blast a wall with their power. He just aimed his hand towards the wall and flicked his finger, creating an air wave that toppled the wall. That too got him some looks, but once more, he passed just fine.
Then, there was the creation magic test, and this time, he was truly stumped. He had no flashy magic shaping techniques. Then, an idea entered his mind, as he made a show of using his hands to mould something and then summoned the odd gun he had, making the proctor gasp at the sudden appearance. Once again he passed, even if by the skin of his teeth.
Then, there was a shooting test, where he just used his finger flick to blow away the moving targets. There, he learned that he still ended some practice using his finger flick, because while destroying his moving targets, he had also destroyed a few more, getting a dirty look from the person manning them.
He just laughed nervously and sighed in relief when they did not blame him for that damage or expect him to pay. He had no money!
“Now, we will be moving to the Combat Section. Everyone who has passed will receive a number card and is expected to move to the combat zone. This will be the final test. I repeat, this will be the final test.”
Ah, finally! The combat test. The thing he was actually good at. Or, well, he should be. If he could defeat Yuno and damn near everyone he had ever come across, he should be able to defeat a few people of his own age, right?
Exchanging glances with Yuno, he saw that he was all cool and calm, not even a little bit panicked about the process. Trying to mimic that calm, he took a deep breath before opening his eyes and walking straight to the combat centre.
Time to become a Magic Knight!
___xx___
His eyes had stars in them as he watched people use different types of magic in many different ways. He had seen three different types of metal magic today, and even a few other elemental ones. While they did not seem strong, the magic type atleast was interesting.
Come to think of it, not even a single person here seemed to be strong.
He wondered why. Maybe they were saving the more powerful people for last? So that they could create good entertainment out of it?
His eyes narrowed as he finally watched someone challenge Yuno. He leaned forward, interested in the magic of a person who would willingly call upon Yuno for a fight. Then, they had to go all I am a noble, and you must respect me, and instantly lost all his respect.
From his experience, people who could actually fight did not waste time on such theatrics. Then again, this was an exam, so maybe they wanted to be extra flashy so they could get the attention of one or more captains?
He had heard that some truly excellent candidates could get multiple offers, and it was then up to the candidates to choose which magic squad they wanted to go to. The ones who could do that must be really strong, huh?
Shaking his head, he watched as the noble, who had a decent amount of magic, but nothing over Yuno, summoned a lightning spell. His eyebrows rose as he realised why the noble specifically targeted Yuno.
Wind Magic was weak to Lightning magic. That was a commonly known rule of magic.
And yet, the noble seemed to have forgotten that the quality of magic was just as important as the attribute of magic, and as Yuno demonstrated it a second later, using just his wind instead of a spell, Wind magic of higher quality could easily overwhelm an inferior Lightning magic.
Shaking his head, he watched Yuno walk out of the combat ring before they had even called the match. He also noted the excessive attention the injured party got from healers, when Yuno had taken care just to zap the man and disperse the majority of the man’s lightning magic into the air.
After that, the fights were all boring. Not a single truly powerful candidate who could make him go all out.
It was only during the tenth match that he realised that he was utterly bored, and sitting on the ground, playing with stones, instead of watching whoever it was that was fighting. The fact that this body didn’t even register their magic as dangerous meant the fight was not even worth watching.
Then, his head snapped up as he realised that the crowd had thinned so much, to the point that only a couple of people were left.
Dread filled him as he realised that only 4 people were left, and all four of them had seemingly paired with each other, leaving no one behind for him to fight.
His eyes widened as he scrambled up and began running around the combat ring, trying to find someone who could fight him, only to come up empty.
Noooo!
If he lost the chance to become a Magic Knight simply because he was too bored with the other fights and could not get an opponent in time, then Yuno would never let him hear the end of it!
Heck, Father and Sister Lily might just send him back to the Capital to take care of Yuno.
The thought of Yuno advancing ahead and becoming a Wizard King simply because he was late made him incredibly nervous and tense.
And yet, there wasn’t anything he could do besides wait and watch, as the last two fights happened, which took too much time to settle, leaving him the sole candidate.
“Oh?” The proctor approached him and, seeing that he was alone, took a look around the combat ring before going back and making an announcement.
“We need a combat partner here. Anyone who is interested in fighting him can come here. Don’t worry, if you have already won, you are already qualified. Winning or losing here would not matter. I repeat, winning or–” He just about had tears in his eyes, as no one was willing to come forward to fight him, even if the good proctor was willing to put in a good word.
“I will take him on.” He turned around, feeling the sad tears turn to happy tears instantly, only to pause as the old man from before fell down from the sky in front of him, damaging the tiles.
He pointed at the floor. “Damaging public property is bad, old man. It might even be expensive! Why not control your landing better?” he questioned the old man, only to pause as he noticed something.
“Are? Is that?” he pointed at the scarf he had around his neck, showing a symbol of one of the Magic Knight squads.
“Ah! Are you from the Black Bulls?!” He shouted, leaning forward to get a proper look at the symbol.
“Ahahaha! Property damage? Brat, what are you smoking? Now, come on, let’s get on with your entrance exam.”
He nervously rubbed the back of his head as he walked back towards the combat ring, ignoring the shell shocked look of the proctor. “Hehehe. I am sorry. It’s just that no one wanted to fight me, so…”
“Oi! Is that guy for real?”
“Does he not know who that is?!”
“Poor thing.”
“He is going to fight him. Does he have a death wish?”
“What is happening?”
“Um, boy?”
“Hm?” He stopped and looked at the proctor, who seemed like he wanted to say something to him, only to see something and look terrified.
“No! I mean–just Best of Luck! I will keep the healers on standby.”
“Okay!” He smiled and jumped into position, his body coiled and ready to respond immediately.
“So, brat,” The man was, for some reason, smoking right before the battle. Wasn’t he taking him too lightly? “I see that you use mostly physical magic. Don’t you use any weapon alongside that?”
He perked up at the question about his magic. “Ah, a weapon? No, I actually never needed one,” Thumping his chest, he replied, “My body is enough. I have trained it so that I can become the Wizard King!” He declared the last part with all his might, looking at Yuno from the corner of his eye.
He was pleased when he saw that even Yuno was looking at them with his jaw hanging loose. It would seem that his declaration shocked–
“Ahahahah!” He looked as the old man was laughing his ass off.
“Wizard King, huh? Fine. Then,” Here, the entire vibe around the man changed, his entire body enlarging, a dark miasma coiling around him, “Let me test that resolve of yours.”
“Bring it on!” he smiled and took a step forward, only to disappear instantly, as the old man was already in his position, his hand sinking into the ground, creating a huge hole.
“Whoa!” He shouted in excitement before jumping back into the fray, fist pulled back. The old man grinned at that, before their punches connected.
His eyes widened as he felt it. He felt pain transmitting through his arm. For the first time since he got the [Viltrumite] spell, he finally felt pain! His joy was short lived as he was pushed back by the old man, whose face was now very scary!
That wouldn't do, now, would it?
Using his flight, he anchored himself in place, something that the old man clearly noticed, as the old man disengaged before kicking him in the chest at very high speeds.
“Eh?” A cough escaped him as the old man kicked him directly in the chest. He coughed, but did not move from his spot. The old man, on the other hand, was blown away by the force of his own kick.
He winced when he saw the man about to crash into the building, as it would just mean more property damage and a bigger bill, only for the old man to literally stop mid air, and then float in one place.
Incredibly, he was still smoking!
“Ohhh!” he exclaimed as he too floated up to the old man’s level, “You can fly too? Old man, you are awesome!”
He heard people furiously whispering below, but his whole focus was on the old man. He had a hunch that this was not some regular old man. He might be old and smoking, but he was very fast, and decently strong as well.
The man then, oddly enough, began chuckling, then began laughing uproariously, “Ahahaha!”
Then, the cigar fell from his lips, and he knew right then and there that the fight was about to get serious. Both of their gazes met as the old man smirked, and the next moment, they were both clashing with each other.
Punches. Kicks. Slaps. Swipes. Anything went.
And yet, it was clear that the old man was far more skilled than he was. The way he could so easily move around his blows, even when he was running at full tilt, told him that this was no ordinary old man.
After a few dozen exchanges, both of them flew back. He was bruised in some places, which were already healing. The old man had a few holes in his clothing and a small bruise on his cheek, courtesy of a punch that almost connected, but both of them were smiling.
Interestingly, the bruises were worse whenever the old man used his magic to coat his fists. They were also slower to heal, but he knew that by the end of the day, he would be back to one hundred percent.
Man, [Viltrumite] was awesome!
“Hey, old man! What is your name? I am Asta. You are a great fighter, by the way.”
He could swear that there was a sudden drop in noise all around him for some reason. The old man’s eye also twitched somewhat. Ah, so he got him that good, huh? Maybe he should hold back his punches when they were so close to people’s faces?
But he couldn't help it! It felt so good to finally stop holding back, especially since it was a pure, physical brawl, instead of the magical spars with Yuno.
Yuno always cheated and used his wind magic to soften his blows before fighting him. Yuno was a tricky opponent. This old man was an interesting opponent!
Now though, the old man seemed ticked off for some reason. But why, though? They were both having such a good time fighting each other! Was it the eye bruise?
“Hey old man!” he shouted, “I will hold back when it comes to your face, okay? You still haven’t told me your name, though.”
That seemed to make the old man grind his teeth once more. The dark magic around his body flared even more, making him instinctively slip into combat mode as the old man shot forward, obliterating the building behind him.
He frowned at that. He shouldn't have done that, not when he could have done that same launch without excessive property damage.
The speed was much higher, but he could keep up just fine, so it was going to be yet another brawl. Only this time, the other party was angry, and he just didn’t feel that an angry brawl could be enjoyed.
Everyone should enjoy a good spar once in a while, but it was no fun trying to fight an actual angry person.
Alas, the old man only continued to escalate in blows, forcing him to shout, “Yuno!”
Yuno would definitely understand what he was asking of him, and he was proven right when, a moment later, all the shockwaves erupting from their impacts were being absorbed by Yuno, making sure that the area around them did not crumble.
Still, even if the old man was mad, this was fun. He should really look into approaching the old man again for a friendly spar.
Who knows, he might just help the Old man get over his anger issues.
