Halfling Cuddling

Halflings have a physiological response to cuddling that is different than most other humanoids. It triggers a sense of safety and languid alertness, which encourages young halflings to bend together for warmth and safety. while cuddling can lead to romantic or amorous activities among halflings, it's not seen as lead in to them in most halfling-heavy communities. Instead, many halflings enjoys cuddling with anyone they trust, and it's seen as something more intimate than a handshake, but less than a hug or kiss on the forehead. In societies with a strong halfling influence, euphemisms for cuddling often evolve to invite others to enjoy a snuggle while being clear (among the truthful) it's not an effort to initiate greater intimacy.

In the Riverglens, these euphemisms are well-known and accepted among residents regardless of ancestry. They are most commonly used by halflings because of the deep sense of safety and bonding halflings gain from snuggling, but halfling-friends often partake in a nice cuddle with halflings, and the social concept of the nonsexual-snuggle-between-friends is well-enough established for any friendly two locals to engage in it occasionally. (Bafflingly the euphemism "pretend we're halflings" is used to initiate more intimae close contact, even among halflings.)
