In a simpler time there were heroes with names like Johnny Utah who dedicated themselves to fighting crime. And there were criminals with names like Bodhi who sought a higher purpose, such as a wave so sick it kills you. These are their stories...

FREE PALESTINE

Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.

-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestinehttps://www.gofundme.com/f/to-preserve-whats-left-of-humanity-global-solidarity

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotillahttps://www.waterislifegaza.org/

-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla alsohttps://www.instagram.com/linking/fundraiser?fundraiser_id=1102739514947848

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patcheshttps://www.gofundme.com/f/support-thamra-cultivating-resilience-in-gaza

They say "full of cum" like it's a bad thing.

bobbler42

Re: literal surf nazis: 1. Warchild’s literally anthony kiedis, no? 2. Surf nazis must die; no idea if it’s a heist movis, but it’s a title.

Foxing around.

The dumbest thing about the remake, is that they had a Payday 2 crossover. Featuring it's own heists and it's now deisted as the rights expired.

Heather

Heck yeah, I've been waiting for this one

Knights Who Say Sledge

Oh hell yes. I grew up in a So Cal surf city in the 90s and the surfers daily got in fights with people they perceived as interopers for countless reasons. It was, at least at that time, a violently competitive culture that aggressively kept out anyone they saw as outsiders. So the whole "surfers only surf specific beaches" thing is INCREDIBLY accurate for the era. Not that no one broke with that, but they very commonly paid a real price for risking surfing someone else's turf. Again, this was in the 90s, so it may have changed, but the movie gets that element of surf culture of the era very right based on where I grew up.

Knights Who Say Sledge

I grew up in a So Cal surf city in the 90s and the degree to which the neo Nazi and the surfer venn diagram circles overlapped there was nearly 100%. I wish I could say that that changed over time, but it only has gotten to be more so the case. I don't live there any longer and haven't for quite a bit, but I remain aware of the area enough to know its only gotten WAY worse. At least in that town (which remains among the leading So Cal surf cities). I know that overlap is not universal tho in all So Cal surf towns, but it is a very real thing. When I saw the film in cinemas at the time I was like "this is exactly what 1/3 of the dudes in my high school are EXACTLY like" in terms of the male surfer culture and behavior in the film. And the level of aggressive territorialness of surfers to their turf in the 90s was off the charts. It was not enjoyable to be a teenager in a surf city in the 90s, even one who didn't surf. The toxic male aggressive surf clan BS was thru the roof.

Sam Handwich

It doesn't take the CIA to brainwash me into having a homosexual sport bonding activity with Patrick Swayze.

Wolfman Jack

Johnny Mnemonic from Istanbul (not Constantine)?

Ollie Alexander

The brick diving thing is a lifeguard/swimming drill! They use it to this day for lifeguard training. As part of the lifeguard certification you need to dive for a 20lb brick and swim the length of an Olympic pool with the brick out of the water on your shoulder as fast as you can

Wolfman Jack

Does anyone know any spooky heist films? Just in time for Halloween season this year?

Ben Schwabe

Nazi shot in the foot is Flea!

bobbler42

Clearly kjb hold with the “next track" button going by rhcp. Much demure, such mindful.

Wolfman Jack

I'd be very happy to have an all-surfing retelling of World War II.... Some kind of Churchill joke about, "We shall fight them on the beaches," then catches a gnarly wave while he plots a genocide in India.

Mildly invested

perfect ending, American tries surfing in Australia once. Dies immediately.

Katie

Who has two thumbs and a Goodnight Cross despite not actually being in the movie? Bob Kelso, how ya doin

Busy Mason

Johnny Queensland, from Tasmania

Donovan Burns

I think also they put that scene in to show that they can swim

ann hedonia

Devon can’t keep getting away with these Chinese Mike jokes

Ari

disappointed by the lack of gary indiana jokes smh

Jessica Brown

Do the Point Break episodes mean they're doing the Fast and Furious series next!? Or at least the first one as it was inspired by Point Break. The F&F movies are a guilty pleasure and I am looking forward to them getting the KJB treatment.

DanYell

Joe Montana was a real nfl quarterback that I think is the origin of Johnny Utah

Hey mind your business, name's not important

That bullshit goes back into 70s and 80s. The South Santa Monica/Venice surfers were notorious for enforcing locals only at the surf spots around the Santa Monica Pier. They would put young kids who were new at surfing on the pier armed with wrist rocket sling shots to shoot small ball bearings at non locals. You have to remember that back in the 60s, 70s and into the mid 80s Venice and South Santa Monica were very working class areas. Then gentrification started happening

Hey mind your business, name's not important

Also modern skate boarding came out of that part of LA. There's a documentary called Dog Town & The Z Boys. Which is about the kids from Venice in the mid 70s that hung out at the Zephyr surf shop. The applied their surfing knowledge to skate boarding and revolutionized the sport. Sorry I'm way off topic but that So Cal skate culture had a huge impact on the kids that created the HarDCore scene in my hometown. Henry Rollins and Ian McKay were big into skating when they were going to high school in DC.

Katie Gilmour

I was yelling Dr Cox pretty regularly.

Sammi

When I saw you'd done this, I wondered if you'd pulled a reverse Casino Royale and covered the remake first just to fuck with us.

Simon T

D'you think Johnny Utah knows Duncan Idaho

Sammi

Wincing every time they refer to Dr. Cox as Dr. Kelso.

Andrew Dunn

What is a surfboard but a you-boat. "What's the brick training for?" Dr Cox's literal first lines are to ask about his cardiovascular fitness. It's over the top physical training prescribed by the hard-ass boss My wife's parents died when she was about 23, and I really want that orphan bumper sticker they described Pedantic point: Stand Your Ground law is specifically written for when you are in public. Castle Doctrine is for when you are at home. This movie is the first time I ever heard the term "Bodhisattva" and between this and the 2007 police procedural "Life" starring Damien Lewis, sparked an interest in Buddhism. (Teaching an American about Buddhism: imagine two copaganda) Speaking of beach sports, I discovered there is a thing called Beach wrestling, which is very similar to sumo wrestling without a mawashi belt. I recently started amateur sumo and I also want to get into beach wrestling. Re: the inclusiveness of physical hobbies- sumo is the opposite of surfing. If you walk up and say hi in the middle of practice, we'll put you in a loincloth and have you shoving people immediately. Also I'm in a queer amateur sumo wrestling Discord Damn I went a long time without knowing Jon bernthal's politics but I could have guessed The first Dirty Harry movie also ends with him throwing his badge into the water The pod hasn't done Roadhouse yet right? Fascinated to hear about the quiet philosophy reading stoic Mullet Tightpants who saves a town from the evil machinations of a capitalist, played by the one Jewish actor in the movie, and his gay-threatening personal enforcer Abigail mentioned the "not gays" towards the end that is a theory synthesized by our cishet Wisconsin boys Redletter Media. They coined the terms "a case of the not gays" to describe forced hetero shit, as well as the term "passive progressive" which is what they call tiny quick gay bits in the background of movies that you can get credit for but also easily edit out

Felix

But what about Australian Jonny?

Werewere

I was not ready for any of these three knowing who Tim Tebow is.

IcarusTyler

I figured out the episodes after thr next, it is too perfect: Point Break - Point Break (Remake) - The Fast & The Furious (the better Point Break remake)

goslingbot

Anyone got the formula abi mentioned at 1:16:30? asking for my gf

Its Devon Babeyyy

Thank you for doing your part habibi. Next episode has one ad in it too just bc we banked them up

Its Devon Babeyyy

The question was closer to "why was this the activity used to introduce Gary busey?". And i think it's genuinely entirely so he would be blindfolded for the joke

mortran

That was a great episode, but Holy shit is can't wait for Under The Skin!

Eric Slusser

So, would the Point Break of today be about Pickleball?

Alex

Surfer bushido code? Is this anything?

Cosm Sauce

I hate Illinois surf nazis from California

NowhereMan661

I just got a say, Lori Petty in this movie is gorgeous. I love women with short hair.

Rufus M. Grapefruit

Maybe the asshole shortage is causing the physiological impossibility?

NowhereMan661

Why has Keanu Reeves played so many guys named John/Johnny/Johnathan?

NowhereMan661

Surf Nazis sounds like something Mel Brooks would come up with.

Winson Paine

As a dad in the US, I am federally required to know about football and compulsively required to explain it when needed. Quarterbacks are often but not always smaller players, not like kicker small but usually lighter than your backs (dudes who run with the ball, usually pretty burly) and certainly smaller than linemen, who are fucking giants most of the time. They are almost always expected to be the smartest guy on the field (they actually have a NFL IQ test players are required to take, its called the WONDERLIC which i find funny), since they are the defacto field marshall for how their team performs and nominally in charge of the show. Reeves is a reasonably creditable ex-college football QB who has slimmed down since his college days, I reckon.

The Dude

Accountant squared episode when?

David Schuller

Speaking of Bigalow, I’d love to know what y’all think of her film, The Loveless. It’s more horny than violent, but it’s Bigalow, so it’s going to get violent.

Carley They/Themsen

Me, the entire podcast: *Patrick Stewart in Charlie's Angels voice* 'and what about Australian Johnny?'

Andrew Dunn

Born and raised in Florida - yup Also I think FD Signifier has done a video on intersectionality and football positions, where he talks about how quarterbacks are known as the intelligent position in football, and COINCIDENTALLY also almost always white men

Emilio Porras Vergara

Keanu also played a former college QB in The Replacements, a movie which I have a lot of fondness for since it was funny unlike most American Football movies.

Serenity

Hoping for the "just like me fr" episode and keeping in line with heist movies based in California, gimme Drive!

Winson Paine

Would love the gang to do the Last Boy Scout (speaking of football movies) if only to hear it shatter the SCUM system

Davesknd

I am deeply offended that nobody in this Podcast knew the legendary movie "Surf Nazi Must Die!". I expected better from you all.

James Rule

2nd term Trump is a Waingro confirmed.

Delwyn Gee

If they do a horror season, Near Dark is a good choice.

Werewere

I'm a sicko whos in too deep - my first thought was "doesn't everyone know O tackles and centers have the highest average wonderlic score?"

Willow Brannon

Just seeing the comments, apparently you’ve volunteered to do an episode on the educational film Surf Nazis Must Die

heffa

Even if the wave didn't kill him, the horrific attempt at an Aussie accent by the cop would have

heffa

Great. Now I my brain is stuck on imagining Swayze and Reeves re-enacting the Auntydonna Midnight Snack skit

Willow Brannon

Colonel Kilgore is probably a surf nazi back in the states, it’s what he reads as being directly inspired by from contemporary American culture

John Leavitt

It is astonishing how much that movie is a stealth Batman movie

Buckeroo

Kirkcudbright is pronounced "Kir-cood-bree" btw

DrShockMaster

The first Fast and Furious is pretty much the same movie but with street racing

November Snow

Brian Cox Memorial award for covert intelligence to Keanu for absolutely beefing someone else's sting operation with the Nazis tbh

Harold Gottfried

I am here to tell you to watch My Own Private Idaho.

ScienceDaddy

Literally came here to suggest this! Troma films rule

Zipzapzop

If you want to do an actual Buddhist movie my recommendations: ongbak, el topo, uncle boonmee who can recall his past lives

Lauri King

The Ladykillers might fit the bill

Noblese Oblahaj

Obama would just rob everyone in the lobby and give their money to the bank, then you'd lose your house

Noblese Oblahaj

Just starting to imagine Point Break but with Furries. The bank robberies line up with cons. Keanu has to choose a fursona and build a suit. Has to learn the lingo and identify popufur artists by style, get some commissions, build an f-list profile

Bozo The Hunk

42:10 Oh fuck I didn't realize there were two movies with Surfer Nazis. This and Troma's Surf Nazi's Must Die

Hey mind your business, name's not important

When the FBI talk about 'brick" they mean straight up regular FBI agents. They do do investigate work only. They don't do undercover work, they don't plant bugs, they are the cyber crime specialist. They aren't profilers or counter-intellgece agents.

Tall Jeff

The Gary Busey award for eating on screen-wait no the Brad Pitt award for eating on sc-wait no...

Stormsdream

I remain in the "No, seriously, Keanu Reeves is a good actor" camp. People don't recognize the acting style. It's too subtle. When they were filming The Matrix Resurrections in Alameda and downtown San Francisco, Keanu would just hang out near the filming location. Alameda is a small island town with basically one main street with stuff on it, and that's where he would be. People would come into the office where I worked and say things along the lines of, "Oh my god, I ran into Keanu Reeves yesterday, and he's so nice. He's such a sweet-heart." I avoided downtown while they were filming and never had a reason to go to Alameda, so I missed out on the sightings. I really hope there are no credible stories about him because it would be wonderful to think there's at least one nice person in high-end Hollywood.

Alex Anderson

Dude you pay this podcast money you can stop if you want

Alex Anderson

Interestingly the “criminal throws a pit bull at the cops” is the justification that SWAT guys use when they shout a family beagle in a no-knock raid. I don’t know how integrated it is into the Narrative but it’s absolutely what SWAT guys told me when I brought up the killing dogs thing.

Sharilyn Neidhardt

SO EXCITED for KJB to cover this movie that I became a patreon subscriber. This film has everything! I grew up in 1970s/80s southern California and they get a lot of the surf culture stuff right imho. Surfers are in fact super territorial and there was a ton of 'Locals Only' energy in so cal at that time.

Alexander Jonsson

Maybe y'all could review Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) Just watched it, it's full of stuff y'all can comment on, like a malaise of ACAB sentiment for example. Saw it free on YouTube.

Karkadan

I come to y'all with a few humble recommendations. May I suggest Mad Money (2008) and the National Treasure movies? Mad Money because it's a heist movie for the Mama Mia crowd, and National Treasure, because, obviously.

The Mad Scientist's toolkit

My sister's show had a surfing episode and the lead who is just leaving his late 70s did his own surfing. I wonder what the insurance situation was like?

The Mad Scientist's toolkit

The previous generation of Neo-Nazis in Australia did actually have a surf nazi unit in lieu of the Hitler youth. Come to think of it they're probably the current generation of Neo Nazis now.

Noblese Oblahaj

The points don't actually matter. It's just a means to pick at the movie at the end, discuss things that they liked or didn't, and allow for conflict of opinion or point of view to be talked about. Also two people can watch the same movie and have different interpretations about what it was saying and how it was depicted, Starship Troopers being the most glaring example.

BarFly

Johnny Midlothian from Peebles

Garfield Noyb

Anyone happen to be familiar with the Pierbi formula Abbi mentions at 1:16:25?

MythicalMothman

Keanu has played a lot of Johnnies. -Johnny Utah -Johnny Mnemonic -Johnny Wick -Johnny Constantine -Johnny Devilsadvocate

John Doe

Johnny Utah? As MythicalMothman pointed out, every time I see Johnny Mnemonic starred in a movie, he reminds me of how John Wick looks like Johnny Silverhand from Night City, as performed by John Constantine, or John whatever his last name is from Um... Anyway, I'm happy you folks talk about Don John's son Jonathan Harker. He's an inspiration to us all (?) PS: Who the hell is Thomas A. Anderson?

Juice

came here to say this omg

MythicalMothman

Oh dang I missed Johnny Silverhand, good catch Johnny Doe

Hovis

The moral of this movie, though unstated, is that attempting to hunt down a borderline harmless thrillseeker heist crew directly led to rape by deception and a whole pile of violent deaths, just to try to stop them making it to Australia where they would have all promptly ate shit and died in the storm. If the FBI ignored the surfer theory everyone wins. Edited to add: Is Bodhi the first example of a crew leader also being the Waingro?

JD Starflower

Two things: 1st, most of the surf Nazis are played by members of the band The Red Hot Chili Peppers who were very popular at the time this film was made. 2nd, it’s really amusing hearing you talk about the actual remake in 2015 and how a spiritual remake could be made with a different extreme sport knowing that’s exactly what they did in 2001. In that version they replaced surfing with street racing, the surf Nazis with Asian street gangs, Keanu Reeves with Paul Walker, and Patrick Swayze with Vin Diesel. But beyond those changes, most of the plot beats are the same.

Hovis

That's sort of the point of a good spy movie though right? It's not meant to be fun. It's like Donnie Brasco, he's not having a great time. Either you're a sociopath already so you don't care about anybody anyway, or you're brutalised by the guilt of living a lie to destroy people you're pretending to care about.

Scott

Fwiw every story I've heard about him has been about how chill and cool he was and I've never heard a hint of him so much as even being rude to someone before.

Orla McEvoy

As someone with an Australian surfer uncle who smoked way too much weed- yuppy surfer hatred is a real thing. Super real - fights and shit on the beach. I’m pretty sure he got done for assault on one of them because young guys were surfing in his spot.

Mircyreth

Johnny Silverhand Johnny Matrix

Mircyreth

@1:37:26 It's pronounced Kir-coo-bree. Regards, a person with family in Scotland.

Commander Freddy

Look if there's one thing growing up in Sydney taught me, it's that surf nazis are very real

Steezcake_Factory

This is one of my favorite movies ever so I really hope they like it

Ezra

It's pronounced Kirk-coo-bree! And it's where some of the Wickerman was filmed.

Josh Brown

Same! I felt so crazy when they were in Australia saying "Johnny WHATEVER" You have a bit ready to go in the chamber!

James Collinge

Johnny Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch from Cardiff

John

Please I beg you, Keanu season

Australian Estuary Pirate

(Australian) November (Because it's Summer), Radical Thorn and Shreddin' Devon. How many iconic Johns has Keanu Reaves played? Johnny America, John Constantine, John Wick... how many more?

lousullivan.bf

This is the first time it’s occurred to me that the phrase ‘young, dumb and full of cum’ is intended to refer to the person in question’s *own* cum and not someone else’s. I was genuinely baffled when they said it in the movie and briefly thought it was some 90s homophobia.
