This episode is genuinely one of our best, I think. It's a deep dive into a movie that just isn't really very good, but the director and writer had such passion that it's hard not to feel kinship with the guy. Also, we finally put forth the central point of the podcast: It's gay to cum.

Kyle Clark

But I thought that Tom Clancy and David Hasselhoff won the Cold War.

This movie made me realize that the Marquis de Sade would have absolutely been a trans woman. Or, at the very least, a femboy.

Scaredyfish

Ok, so after listening to this episode I wanted to check in on Michael Davis, so I did a little Googling. I’m pleased(ish) to report that he has made another film. It’s an animated feature he wrote directed and animated himself. It doesn’t have distribution, so no, you can’t watch it. Oh, and it’s called Nixed, and it’s a gumshoe movie about Richard Nixon investigating JFK’s killing because he thinks he’s next. There’s a trailer and a website, and it’s definitely real because it played at the Annecy animated film festival.

The chaos around 39m was absolutely beautiful. 😂💜

MagneticRose

it made me laugh so hard i cried

Randall Stievens

Suprised you missed mr clean cut using his magnum as a marital aid.

Australian Estuary Pirate

"Cumming is gay" ... if you do it right *puts on sunglasses* YEAAAAAHHH! *drives into the rainbow sunset*

Josh Brown

I subscribed for this episode. I knew I couldn't get every episode I wanted so I needed to time it right, and this is the one.

molotawv

Kill James Bond, LLC stands firmly in favor of edging

Hedrigal

Will there be a knives out episode of the podcast ever? I feel like you guys deserve to watch a good movie with Daniel Craig in it.

British Pterodactyl

They said they would do that one a while ago, I remember them saying they liked it. I feel like season 2 is gonna have more artsy movies/better written movies/etc. It just has to, right?

Various Ailments

Boy I could really go for some c h i c k e n n u g g e t s

Felicity Hall

Oh god you've just given me a proustian revery over Madness Combat

Jamie King

Interestingly, at the time of the director's ama there was a mid budget action film that came out. John Wick had a budget of about $20 million according to IMDb.

Alfred Lang

mans never heard of a ball gag apparently...

Alfred Lang

23:56 this sounds like saints row 3 ...the movie...

Reece Lawrence

Logan Lucky feels like a better fit, it certainly has some Masculinity Thoughts.

Fenris Mayday

I knew the C H I C K E N N U G G E T S bit and drop would be good and I was not disappointed

Hedrigal

Knives out also has masculinity thoughts, alongside cultural insensitivity thoughts and smarm thoughts.

Youngstown

Cumming is gay, we know that, but more important, I think, is the equivalent inverse; Shooting mean, tough men is the offset to the gayness you naturally build up caring about people, including yourself. Satisfaction is allowed, but only completely internalised and invisible, *never* attachment or ,god forbid, ambivalent feeling and openness.

The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast!

I saw this movie in the theater and enjoyed it at the time but I never saw it again and most of my memories of it have been lost. I definitely forgot how deeply this movie hates women, it has a really 90's poser indie movie attitude to it. I will say this is one of two movies that I know of where the hero shoots people during sex, the other being the amazing Nicolas Cage vehicle Drive Angry which is much more memorable.

The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast!

I have a movie recommendation for you wonderful people: Killer Elite from 2011. It's fun, it has Clive Owen and THE STATHAM and Bob DeNiro even shows up for a few scenes. It's also the only time I've ever heard Dominic Purcell sound like he's from Merseyside rather than doing a generic American accent.

Ben Schwabe

So everyone is saying this movie hates women because the bad guy is a sexist pig? He's the bad guy.

Alex Tompkins

You had me thinking the fucking baby's name was like Cuntgobbler or a racial slur with all that beeping

The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast!

It's not just the bad guy being sexist, it's about the framing and depiction of women in the movie. It's the storytelling and directorial intent that has deep creases of misogyny running through it.

ifthen

Do not cum and/or spit!

Brian Taulbee

It’s not like a movie that’s basically two hours of just one type of activity has to be bad. Fury Road is essentially a two hour car chase, and it’s phenomenal.

Ice-Chewing Empath

honestly it sounds like the director of this movie listened to too much Alex Jones; the combination of a conspiracy centered on elected Democrats, a reflexive opposition to gun control legislation and his libertarian-ish but otherwise completely underdeveloped politics make me think that he based this movie on an uncritical absorption of several hours of InfoWars nonsense

LadyArtemis

I actually loved this because I went through the same experience as Abby. When this movie came out in 2007, I loved it. I used to say it was an example of a good movie with no plot. But then I watched it again recently and had to grapple with how much my tastes and sensibilities have changed.

Jae H

Awesome episode, though that AMA post from the director towards the end has broken me. May be the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. (Ok maybe I’m exaggerating a little but)

natruska

made it through the entire hour without accepting a single point (well, okay, the misogyny is really really overdone). shoot 'em up is the most flawless work of parody ever made. the incoherent conspiracy that's simultaneously left, right, and left wing again, smith's mindless violence that's actually acknowledged through the road rage scene...it's all gold.

Elizabeth Smith

B R E A S T M I L K C H I C K E N N U G G E T S

Josh Brown

Oh, and can I recommend Sneakers? There's Sidney Poitier for Abby (amazing actor, of course), Dan Akroyd doing conspiracy theories for Alice (resident conspiracist), and Robert Redford for Devon (because Robert Redford is sexy as hell)

HJC

the way all the mid-aughts manchild edginess of this film reminds me of The Boondock Saints... which is itself probably a good candidate for the show!

Elspeth Hunt

Suing the hosts because I was doing an interval on the treadmill when the “chicken nuggets” bit started and I nearly fucking died

AkselA

I was thinking to myself why the Crank movies are so good, while this is so bad. I don't have an answer

AkselA

I fiirst thought this was Free Fire, but that doesn't have Paul Giamatti in it. Now I've seen Shoot Em Up and I don't think it was 80 minutes well spent, but the podcast truly made up for it

JoeNotCharles

Another movie with a bunch of random moments that made me want to hear your take on Grosse Point Blank...

Elder Dog

I watched Morbius and all I got out the experience was contempt for Jared Leto.

British Pterodactyl

Zorin trapped you in a burning 🥵 elevator with one Bond character. Who's in the elevator with you?

scara b

this is the quality content we pay good money for! more chicken nuuuuuugggghhhhhets

ZanraiKid

When I say the laugh I provided for “breastmilk chicken nuggets” was the hardest I’d laughed in weeks, I mean it.

Ben Schwabe

Every time someone is a creep to a woman, it's the bad guy. This movie is centered on Clive Owen's angry man who gets to use violence to solve all his problems, true. It's an action movie with a male lead, so...kinda unavoidable. Monica Bellucci's character isn't super well developed and this movie probably fails the Bechdel test (but then it's only got like three characters of note. ) but she's actually a character with her own motivations. I just don't think this movie "hates women." Paul Giamotti's wife gets called nagging by our fearless podcast hosts, but she's having a completely understandable reaction to being married to a guy who is clearly lying to her about something. I really only think you can call this movie misogynistic if you didn't actually pay too much attention to it. Which clearly the hosts didn't since they missed a bunch of details.

Ben Schwabe

This movie is 100% pro gun control. The idea of a popular Democrat running to the left while governing to the right is so firmly based in reality it's painful. I might be one of the few listeners to remember the Clinton years well, but the idea the a Democrat would be a lying sock of shit who didn't actually believe in anything isn't nihilistic, it's just reality.

Miss Norris

Oh no. I used to like this film. Abigail is totally right about it being an egg film.
