This emperor penguin painting with northern lights in the background is perfect to paint this winter! I have explained every step of the process, but I will also be uploading a video soon that will show in detail how to paint the northern lights as it's a great background for winter animals.
Supplies:
Liquitex acrylic paints: titanium white, prussian blue, light blue permanent, bright aqua green, medium magenta, fluorescent pink, medium yellow, orange, red oxide, mars black
Paintbrushes: Large wide flat (background), large/medium filbert (northern lights), extra large dry brush (to smudge the lights), fan (splatters), medium wide flat (first layer of penguin), small filbert (feather texture and eye), small pointed (details)
Don't worry if you don't have these exact brushes or colours - just use the closest that you have 🎨Mediums - (optional) I used Liquitex slow-dri medium to keep the paints wet for longer while creating the northern lights effect. If you don't have this then you can just use a little bit of water instead.
Canvas - I used a square 12" x 12" canvas
I hope you enjoy painting this one! I'm thinking of painting some more winter animals with a similar background - let me know if you have any suggestions ❤️
