Midweek bonus tutorial - how to paint glowing lights!

This is the technique that we used to paint the fairy lights in my recent reindeer tutorial. I thought I would create a full length step by step video for you, as they are really fun to paint and once you know how to do this you can add them to any painting that you choose!

I have broken this technique down into six simple steps, which makes the process so much easier.

Supplies used:-

  • Liquitex acrylic paint - Prussian blue, light blue permanent, cadmium orange, cadmium medium yellow, yellow light hue, titanium white, mars black

  • Brushes - wide flat (background), small/medium filbert (glow & bulbs), slanted (strings), fan (splatters)

  • Sponge (optional) - for blending

  • I used an 8" x 8" canvas, but any size or shape will work!

  • Pencil

  • Water or glazing medium if you have it (I used water for this tutorial)

I hope you like it! 🎨

If you used a different dark color for the background. Say i used dark green then would i use a lime green as the first halo around the lights ? So would use a lighter /brighter version of the background color ?

Yes I think that would work well! Making it a warmer shade of green by adding a bit of yellow in would work well too to help to create the glow 🥰
