The global demographic landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with profound implications for pension systems and retirement planning. By 2080, the number of people aged 65 and over is projected to surpass the population of children under 18 worldwide. This shift, coupled with the fact that one in four individuals now reside in countries where population growth has already peaked, signals a dramatic change in societal structure.

If you are in the USA and plan to depend on your pension, my advice is DON'T! Here are places where you at least have a shot - top 10 countries.

Aging Population and Economic Challenges

The aging population presents several economic challenges:

  • Increased Pension Burden: As the proportion of retirees grows, pension systems will face mounting pressure to support a larger elderly population with fewer working-age contributors1.

  • Healthcare Costs: An older population typically requires more healthcare services, potentially straining public health systems and increasing overall healthcare expenditures.

  • Economic Growth: With a shrinking workforce, countries may experience slower economic growth, affecting the funding available for pensions and social services.

  • Inflation: Inflation eating away at benefits.

Long-Term Planning

Given these demographic and economic shifts, long-term planning becomes crucial:

  • Individual Retirement Strategies: People must start planning for retirement earlier and more comprehensively, considering longer life expectancies and potential economic uncertainties.

  • Government Policy Adaptation: Policymakers need to reassess and adapt pension systems, healthcare provisions, and economic policies to ensure sustainability in the face of changing demographics.

I am 32 from the Netherlands. Netherlands has the best pensions worldwide. I don't believe I will get it at 70 which will probably the new retirement age. So yes don't count on your pensions

Interesting how Japan scores lowest, yet they have the lowest childbirth rate, big headwinds coming then for Govt coffers🧐

With the pace of AI and robotics, no need to look past 2040 much less 2080. We will be in a new type of economy and unlikely to have a labor shortage.

Even if you’ve gone the private pension route governments are no targeting those via “prescribed assets” forcing private pension funds into public debt or asset instruments. I doubt anyone will escape this fully at a global scale. You can delay it by moving around but that also has a cost associated with it. If the movement cost is marginal compared to your net wealth it might be worth it. For the average guy, buckle up and trust in God as He is the only constant in this world.

Must be hard in Japan where they all live to 100+ 😬
