The data shows a pattern where majors with less direct career paths tend to have higher regret rates:

Traditional Liberal Arts: Majors like English (52%) and Liberal Arts (72%) show high regret rates despite their intellectual value

Social Sciences: Sociology (72%) and Political Science (56%) graduates express significant second thoughts

Media Fields: Journalism (87%) and Communications (64%) top the list, likely due to industry disruption and limited job marketsAlthough students may be drawn to those fields while they’re in school for reasons beyond salary and job security, “when we graduate, reality hits,” said Sinem Buber, ZipRecruiter’s lead economist.

“When you are barely managing to pay your bills, your paycheck might become more important.”

The cohort was 1,500 job seekers in 2022. That adds some perspective. Odd. Regret is a form of suffering I choose not to participate in. Investing sure helps build the muscle to deal with it, i believe. When approached mindfully. I’m grateful for the experience and opportunities we have.

Journalism for the win! :-) Although I don’t regret the degree I never worked in journalism. The degree did help me be successful in my corporate career. Starting pay sucked, which is why probably everyone regrets it. But my skills eventually landed me top positions.

At one time university was for the elite... students would enjoy wealth regardless of the discipline. University is widely promoted now as a means to a wealthier future; a much different paradigm. So the goal is different even if the universities still offer disciplines with minimal income possibilities. Knowing this might help those privileged enough to enjoy university make a wise choice of discipline. My opinion is that it should also affect those who provide college loans. Barack Obama spoke about making a good choice. My 2 cents
