If you're sick and need treatment, don't wait—fly somewhere for care. A delay can be fatal.

2 cases where i have first hand experience

  • My mother waited and it was fatal.

  • Five years ago, my brother-in-law broke his leg in Canada and waited four days on a gurney in a hallway before treatment to get his leg set. He will never forget the pain and discomfort.

The Canadian system is likely even more strained now with the influx of new Citizens.

Canadians are now seeking healthcare in the U.S., with Buffalo’s MRI business thriving due to Canada’s long wait times.

Some Crzy Stats

  • Average MRI wait in Ontario: 80+ days

  • 2023–24: 15,474 Canadians died waiting for surgeries or scans

  • Since 2018: ~75,000 died on waitlists

  • Ontario ranks near the bottom of G20 for MRI units per capita

  • Canada has 44% fewer hospital beds per capita than the OECD average

I've criticized the American healthcare system in the past for being costly. Back in the day, Americans would travel to Cuba and Colombia for medical care; now, Canadians are coming to the USA for it. Upside down world.

Not quite "upside down" since it's only the wealthy that are travelling and for efficiency, not cost. Winston Churchill said of democracy — "Democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried." I would argue there's a parallel here — "The U.S. healthcare system is the worst form of healthcare except for all those other forms that have been tried."

But life expectancy is 3 years higher in Canada vs US

Apart from appalling healthcare in Canada (which they tax the bejesus out of us for) I think a lot of us are upset with the cost of living in general while we see our quality of life plummeting. And life post COVID just feels kinda yuck. Trust in the establishment is waning. That being said I'm having a blast and can see through a lot of the nonsense.

My own experience with Canadian health care similar to that of your brother in law. I broke my leg in a hockey game and waited for 24 hrs on a gurney to only have a resident doctor put a cast on it and send me home. This was a compound displaced fracture. Just had a friend come back from Cuba. He needed stitches for a cut he received from a foil. The sutures needed to be purchased from the black market as the hospital had none. I hope the health care will improve. Hard to imagine it getting worse

Medical tourism is a real thing. I see parallels between India and the US here. A good friend works in the medical tourism industry of India which is very strong and profitable. Rich people from the Middle East and Egypt mostly fly down to India, live in luxury rooms and get tested and go back. The irony here is in India the private sector is great but the country doesn’t take care of others. The rich from outside or within the country can only afford this luxury. The US feels the same. If you can’t afford the overpriced treatment, the system will punish you. But how much does this visit to the US and the machine cost Canadians? I’m sure only a few Canadians can afford US treatment. Either way, an 80 day wait is never good

The reality is that Canadians have a choice when they vote. Political parties poll the public for their priorities in order to get elected. Health care is not a priority when they polled. So the politicians focus on other issues that might not be as important during a campaign. Politicians in Canada can also call an election when ever they want and they choose opportune times to call elections, usually when the odds of them winning are high. We have recently had two elections. Both revolved around fear mongering about Trump, claiming they were able to do something about the "tariffs". Neither can, its an absurd idea that the majority fell for hook, line, and sinker. We still have the tariffs and there is no end in sight. Also, when you live next to a country with private health care, the best and brightest Canadians from every field, including the medical field, are lured to the US for money. Bottom line is that the rich in the US and Canada will always be able to access excellent health care, the average Canadian gets mediocre health care and the poorest Americans don't use the medical system because they cant afford it or pay for the rest of their lives. Either way, you must be proactive about your health. Nobody cares or has the opportunity to look after you like you can. You have to be proactive in looking after yourself, because both medical systems are reactive, they do something when you have a problem, many times its too late, stage 4. “The government you elect is the government you deserve.” ― Thomas Jefferson

Wow -- outrageous! Your brother waited four days for his leg to be set? The bones start healing between 24-48 hours. Good grief! Socialized medicine is a flaming disaster! I'm saddened to hear that your mother passed away from something that could have been treated. So very sorry for your loss, if that was recent... :-(
