IBM recently transitioned 8,000 HR positions as part of a sweeping internal automation initiative — not due to budget cuts or performance issues, but through the adoption of a powerful AI-driven platform.

THE GOOD NEWS

IBM were able to use this saving to hire people in other roles!

AskHR

At the heart of this transformation is AskHR, a virtual assistant built on IBM’s own Watsonx Orchestrate technology.

This system now handles:

  • 94% of HR tasks, including payroll, vacation management, document processing, and even employee offboarding

  • A reported $3.5 billion in productivity gains

  • A 40% reduction in HR operational costs

IBM not only implemented the technology internally — it is now offering this enterprise-ready solution for other customers!

While IBM describes this as innovation, it also marks one of the first large-scale experiments in replacing white-collar roles with AI tools. And by IBM’s own metrics, the pilot has proven extremely effective.

This development raises important questions about the future of work, the role of AI, and how companies can balance efficiency with humanity in times of transformation.

Is it still going to discriminate against hiring straight white guys?

I believe AI is accelerating everything. Take digital transformation projects, for example — what once took companies years to complete can now be done in half the time. But this speed comes with a trade-off: companies will need to transform more frequently just to stay competitive. As everything speeds up, so does the demand on people. A project manager who used to handle 3–5 projects at a time can now manage 6–8, thanks to AI. It's not just about working faster — it's about constantly adapting at a faster pace.

Yes, they relentlessly cling to the idea that AI lies and cannot match their cognitive abilities.... Probably a self-protection strategy

As a technology recruiter with many years experience I’ve been aware of the impact that AI is likely to have on the HR function for some time now - just yesterday I was at a recruitment conference covering multiple subjects but AI was by far the most talked about subject.
