Rule #72 - Life Changing Money Rule

You always hear me talking about balancing risk and reward and my 80/20 rule - 80% HODL BAG is Safe Bag and 20% Trading Bag....well

"When you make life-changing money, lock it in. Don’t gamble it away chasing more." IA 2025

Key Principles:

  • Secure First, Risk Later: Always take a portion of your gains—especially the life-changing ones—and move them into safe, untouchable assets (e.g., i always have a concept called my Money Market, 2017-2021 that was Bitcoin, 2021-2024 that was MSTR, now my Money Market is Tesla - it is safe ie limited downside in relative terms and also has asymmetric upside).

  • Alpha vs. Risk: Yes, there may be 10 more higher performing trades on the table but are they as safe?

  • Sell Early: An old addage is sell early.... hence layers and profit taking before peaks and moving the gains into safety.

  • Emotional Discipline: Greed whispers: “Double it.” Wisdom answers: “Keep what you earned.”

  • Think Legacy: Imagine what that money could do—for you, your family, or society. $110M isn’t just a number—it’s generations of impact. As in the case of James Wynn, losing it all in a month isn’t just tragic—it’s preventable. And he also sacrified his legacy and doing good for the planet

TLDR

Harvest + Hedge
Make big gains → Harvest a portion → Hedge the rest ie lock in your future

"Live like you’ll get lucky again, but protect yourself like you won’t." IA 2024

There’s evidence suggesting JW was placing counter trades every time he telegraphed a position

Do you wholeheartedly believe Tesla is a safer bet than bitcoin in terms of risk management? Tesla share price is always going to be linked to the actions of Elon, which can be volatile. For that reason alone I feel like spot Bitcoin carries less risk than spot Tesla moving forward, the difference between the two is the derivatives market which is perhaps why James prefers it?

Newbie here, I had to edit. Thanks to a feedback. I am still hoping for some of you who have been doing this for a while to give me some feedback. I am trying to ensure I have something for my family given my son has special needs. I am afraid to take profits and possibly miss getting back at a lower price. I don't have much but I have been trying to build my bag. Thanks.

Where is James Wynn posting his positions?

FOS Holder

James shows us his mindset. His safe holding is TSLA. Most of us are thinking of taking profits FROM TSLA into cash. My safe holding is BTC. I will roll TSLA profit into BTC. Congrats to all !

InternetExploder

Agree to disagree. I still hold some TSLA for potential upside but no way do I consider that a safe bet. Elon is a wild card.

CryptoBong

Elon has always been a wild card. Strangely enough him and TSLA have come out smelling like roses after stinking for a bit. I will not bet my money market on TSLA. I have limited my asymmetric bets to TSLA, MSTR, NVDA, BTC, SOL primarily (aligning with James' portfolio).

Ironman

I am Tesla banking for 7 years now. The interest rate has been huge. James is right, period.

Bluebird Cafe

Lock it in! This is perhaps the most important message James has ever shared. Following it will make all the difference. Two "round trips" later, I now understand the lesson.

just a question for the community since I'm not understanding the 'safe, untouchable assets ' should form the 80% - does that mean it's pulled out of the investment bucket? From what I'm reading James has his in Tesla so wouldn't that be in the 20% 'trading bag'? thx
