I know I should be doing some more fun things on a Friday night but here I am

Waymo has at least 1,400 cars operational across cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta, and Miami.

California DMV data (separate from NHTSA) shows 835 total Waymo collision reports.

Waymo's safety data overall shows it outperforms human drivers in crash rates.

I am confused. 835/1400 crash rate of 60% of Waymo cars????

So my Q is - Do humans really crash that much if 60% of Waymo Cars Crash?

💀 The Waymo Experience: Car jerks to a stop for a pedestrian 4 blocks away You question reality for 3 seconds "Re-routing due to construction" = 7-minute loop around a dead end It merges like a terrified squirrel and you start praying to Elon It’s not the ride. It’s the existential crisis of realizing you're putting your life in the hands of a robot that panics when it sees a trash can slightly out of place. Meanwhile, Karen in her busted Camry just cut across 3 lanes on her phone without spilling her latte. 🤣

865 crashes / 1400 cars isnt a valid metric to compare to humans- thats why you are confused The metric should be 865 crash/ number of miles driven (Or trips, or some other measure quantifying driving) Also it isnt clear that 865 crashes are individual cars- some cars could have been involved in more than one crash 1400 cars is tiny tho, tesla will win this race so easy. Cant wait

Wouldn't that percentage actually be a lot higher, since this information is from California DMV, and should only be based on the number of Waymo vehicles operating on California?

It should be accidents divided by number of trip.

Would crash rate not be number of crashes/total number of drives that each individual Waymo has done??

Police-reported crash rate: 2.1 incidents per million miles (Waymo) vs. 4.68 (humans) Checked with AI. It did say accidents were less serious and not always Waymo's fault. Still not that great an improvement.

The trend you dont want to have. Chart in absolute numbers, could be 1. More W cars were deployed, 2. Rushed product, 3. Something changed in environm and W couldnt catch up.

I wonder to myself if there isn't a potential for humans to hit the self driving cars when they get jerky at spots where the software gets confused. I've seen that in both Waymo and Tesla's. Not accidents, but confusing behavior at odd intersections. I also think that it has more to do with the total number of miles driven which would be way different than almost all humans during a given timeframe.
