Although this is Canadian data, it represents what much of the WEST is going thru. Thank you "on my way up" for sharing

The increase in taxes and shelter costs in Canada is linked to the rising cost of social programs. As governments expand social services such as healthcare, education, and welfare to meet growing demands, funding requirements increase.

This leads to higher taxes to sustain these programs.

Simultaneously, shelter costs rise due to increased demand for housing, driven by population growth, which can be partly influenced by the need to accommodate more people accessing these social services.

This trend is not unique to Canada but is observed in many Western nations, where aging populations and expanded welfare states (As I call UBI NATION) have similarly increased public expenditure, necessitating higher taxation.

TO make matters worse, increased immigration increases the demand for social programs, as new residents may initially rely on public services like healthcare and housing assistance. This also drives up costs... and how long can it continue?

MY FORECAST

Countries will continue to devise new methods to tax individuals that hold any form of financial wealth, such as raising property taxes, implementing taxes on unrealized capital gains and so on. Just like national debt, costs to service nations is also spiraling out of contorl.

PS this has all happened before AI has hit! Can you imagine what this will look like in 5 years?

All governments encourage the public to blame the migrants, the people on benefits etc for everything. Where as in reality it is the super rich, the central banks and their governmental puppets that are screwing the working and middle classes ie the great wealth transfer that has massively accelerated since covid. Obviously you can't have uncontrolled immigration but migrants are the scapegoat. Here in the UK thanks to the disaster of Brexit, there is now a shortage of workers in health and care, agriculture and other essential services. The oligarchs, the corrupt super rich scum are the cause of the ever growing disparity in wealth not the poor.

Wonder who controls the government? The immigrates or the corporate lobbyists?

I feel living in CA is not much different in terms of taxes we have to pay. Income tax federal and state, sales tax at county and cities, property taxes which even if you rent it’s imbedded there. Then there are insurances, home, car and healthcare are the must. Middle class paid the most taxes. Riches find the loopholes and the “poor” get free health care and food subsidies. Just really making a living. I guess that’s why we are here at Jame’s channel, hope to make more so that we don’t just make a living but start to live a life and take care of our family. More love to this community. 💕💪

Wow, Canadians existing to serve their government.

Wow, you’re saying the bad part out loud. But you’re bang on. I know, I live there…luckily in Alberta though. As a non supply management farmer it hasn’t been too bad for me yet, but it’s coming and I’m getting prepared to make my exit. Thankfully there are Bitcoin friendly jurisdictions I can buy my way into…if I have to.

The original chart uses nominal dollars, which exaggerates the rise over time due to inflation. A more accurate and meaningful view would adjust for inflation (real dollars), or show costs as % of average household income. For the latter, here is a comparison: 1961 Taxes: ~33% Shelter: ~14% Food: ~18% Clothes: ~10% 2024 Taxes: ~44% Shelter: ~28% Food: ~10% Clothes: ~4% Also, if we adjusted all values to 2024 dollars (using CPI inflation adjustments), the gap between taxes and basic expenditures (shelter, food, clothing) would shrink, especially in earlier decades. In real terms, shelter and food costs may look relatively stable over the long term or increase modestly—rather than showing dramatic rises. Taxes would still rise, but more gradually. Some spikes would still remain due to real policy changes, not just inflation. Bottom line: The dramatic rise in dollar amounts over time is largely due to inflation and income growth. Real (inflation-adjusted) spending growth has been slower. Showing expenditures as a Percentage of Household Income is usually the most informative way to understand burden over time. Taxes as % of income: Historically, the average Canadian family paid around 33–45% of its income in total taxes (including income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, etc.). It peaked in the early 2000s and has slightly declined in recent years. Shelter as % of income: Grew modestly, especially in the 2010s housing boom; now around 25–35% of income for many households. Food as % of income: Decreased over time—Canadians now spend a smaller percentage of income on food than in the 1960s. Clothing as % of income: Has fallen significantly due to globalization and cheaper imports. Bottom line: Expressed as a percentage of income, many costs (especially food and clothing) are lower today than in the 1960s. However, taxes and housing are a bigger relative burden now than they were several decades ago.

A vancouver based oncologist recently told me there isn't a single doctor she knows of that has been able to buy a home. She thinks its the biggest reason for why medical specialists are not able to come to the city.

Maybe one should bear in mind that low wages cannot finance private health care. And that most, includes government's, will make a plan to favour the well off and leave the poor struggling, and degrading health wise on the poverty line working badly paid long hours Then claim people don't wish to work and such like. Hmm. Ps. I am not a left winger but I am not right wing neither. I believe there is space for everyone. Greed is the elefante in the room.
