Weekly Health is Wealth segment

My TLDR

"If it has more than 4 ingredients - avoid like the plague! "

The UHP Spectrum of Harm:

A 2024 BMJ umbrella review involving nearly 10 million people linked diets high in UPFs to premature death, cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, mental health disorders, and sleep issues. While UHPs are not poisonous, they are pretty darn close especially over time.

  • Linked to 32 conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, poor mental health, and early death.

  • High in sugars, unhealthy fats, sodium; low in fiber/nutrients; disrupts hunger signals, promoting overconsumption and weight gain.

  • The Poisons they contain.... artificial flavors, colors, emulsifiers, and preservatives; may harm gut health, disrupt hormones, and cause inflammation; packaging contaminants like PFAS and microplastics.

  • Eating this crap results in 50% higher depression risk; may impair cognition, memory, behavior, and child development. NEVER FEED YOUR KIDS CHICKEN NUGGETS

Link with mental health may be moderated by inflammation, as UPF leads to inflammation & inflammation could be associated with mental health problems. Also high sugar leads to crash and sluggishness, fatigue & poor concentration which may mimic some of the symptoms of depression & anxiety.

All true but sodium is still wrongfully demonized like fat was, especially if you are active. We need a lot more salt than we think for proper fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, bp regulation and food absorption. Not iodized salt, sea salt.

The Jackal

With all due respect, this is not good advice, basically a fat-free vegan diet. Plant based meats are full of seed oils and other junk. Red meat, butter, lard, tallow are some of the best nutrition on the planet. Add eggs, beef liver, raw dairy, oysters, etc.

Just went to the local farmers market this morning and bought organically grown fruit, vegetables and pasture raised protein directly from the farmers that grew them. Please support the local farmers that actually care about the food we eat.

Umm no. don't agree with this. Putting red meat, butter, beef tallow, honey and maple syrup on the Least healthy foods list is putting people the wrong way. There is significant data showing that if a person was to ONLY eat those things they would be significantly healthier (by body composition, energy level, and yes blood work) then most of the population. But don't believe me. Simply run and experiment on yourself and see for yourself.

Absolutely agree, did dramatic make-over of my diet and lite to moderate changes in my physical exercise program in Jan 25 and have seen big reversal of adrenal deficiencies and with that an improvement in my short-term memory. Plant based products should probably be closer to the red column and organically (with limited GMO as heritage seeds are very limited) grown food (meat, vegetables, fruit) dark green.

I also don't agree with the red meat as being the least healthy, it is by far the most nutrient dense food, go ask the thousands of thriving carnivors that haven't touch a veggie in years ... I'll take the Ribeye steak anytime before oats (horse food) or plant oils, ( canola, soy, seeds) that are some of the worst food you can eat. Meat is the most natural food, that has help humans evolved since the dawn of time. I'll take that anytime before manufactured tofu...

Can’t live without a bacon sandwich or fry up now and then ,after a session on a Saturday night !

Good to see lots of push back on the plant based advice. All the credible evidence for plant based is as a consequence of removing processed foods. The advice says avoid UPFs but then descends into the cult of veganism/vegetarianism. Nothing wrong with risking your health to help the animals but it’s very difficult to be healthy and be a vegetarian in the long term. “Liquid oils from plants”. And “plant based meats”. Terrible for you. Nothing more processed than that. The healthiest diet is the diet which is the least processed. In other words the most natural. That simply means Meat and animal products eg fish, eggs, steak etc Fruit Veg Done. That’s it. The source of these being organic/grass fed etc is even better. Healthy animal/plant means better quality food. Also there’s an exception to every rule. Olive Oil is omega 9. So you can consume lots without messing with your omega 6 to 3 ratio. It’s processed up the wazoo but good for you.

I use olive oil, coconut oil, beef tallow, grass-fed butter, and ghee depending on the heat levels. Pork tastes good, but has high rates of parasites which cancer thrives on so I am cautious about that one. I’m looking into buying only meat products from an actual Amish farm. They have one of the lowest recorded levels of autism as a population, except for a child they adopted which developed autism because of vaccinations and unhealthy foods prior to adoption.

Moderation.
