Bitcoin Knots vs Core Debate (Patreon)
Content
I've remained quiet on this one for some time but do watch it from a distance.
TLDR
If I thought it posed a threat to BTC, I would have immediately sold my BTC and MSTR holdings!
The Details
Bitcoin debates like Core vs. Knots aren’t new. They happen all the time. The community wrestles with disagreements about what Bitcoin should allow and how strict the rules should be. Some people—often purists—see changes as threats, but history shows Bitcoin doesn’t break from internal disputes.
Core vs. Knots in Plain English
Bitcoin Core: The main version of Bitcoin software, used by most nodes. It’s conservative but still evolving.
Bitcoin Knots: A fork maintained by Luke Dashjr, with tighter rules against things considered “spam” and extra privacy features. It still follows Bitcoin’s rules, so it won’t split the chain.
Recently, Knots has gained popularity (now close to 20% of nodes) as Core prepares for its v30 update in late 2025.
What’s the Fight About?
Core v30 may expand how much data people can attach to Bitcoin transactions (via OP_RETURN). Critics worry this will flood the blockchain with “junk” like NFTs or inscriptions, making Bitcoin less about money and harder for individuals to run nodes. They fear this shift could centralize Bitcoin or dilute its purpose.
On social media, some are calling this change catastrophic—claims like “it will kill Bitcoin” are spreading. Knots is being promoted as the “true” Bitcoin alternative.
The reason I keep quiet is that it does increase emotions... this, for example

Why This Won’t Kill Bitcoin
Consensus rules don’t change: Both Core and Knots still follow Bitcoin’s fundamental rules. No hard fork, no split.
Users have freedom: Anyone can run Core, Knots, or another version. This choice is what decentralization means.
Yes, there are valid concerns about blockchain bloat and its philosophical implications. But the “Bitcoin is dying” talk is mostly fear and exaggeration. Bitcoin thrives on debate, forks, and experimentation. That’s not a weakness—it’s a feature.
