How AI will displace workers

Companies (especially large ones) will use AI to automate jobs—everything from customer service to knowledge work.

This automation could remove millions of jobs, especially middle-class ones.

The owners of AI technologies (typically the wealthy and corporations) will see enormous profit increases. My thesis.

While the elite get richer, the majority may see wages stagnate, benefits shrink, or lose their jobs altogether. This is already happening now.

Capitalism, not AI, is the issue. Hinton isn’t blaming AI itself. Instead, he’s blaming the economic system (capitalism), which incentivizes minimizing costs and maximizing profits—even at the expense of social welfare.

Want even scarier and potentially bleak future? Dr Roman Yampolskiy interview in Diary of CEO is worth watching https://youtu.be/UclrVWafRAI Perhaps most intriguing he says is he is saying 'potential mass job losses' as in capability is there. But sometimes years and even decades between tech being possible (eg video phone possible 70s) to being widespread (with webcam and then smartphones) Robot to take over most manual jobs decade(s) away yet....maybe Another interesting point about this is that we as humans can't even really grasp what sentient AI is or capable of. It's like asking your dog if it understands why you go out to work daily

Alexis

Human creativity is infinite. AI tools are already specializing, and there is no indication that true AGI is even possible. Even if AI replaces 99.9% of knowledge work, the remaining 0.1% will grow to become the entire knowledge economy, while the rest represents productivity gains. Fear-mongering about AI will only increase state overreach into our lives. Don't fall for the economic fallacies.

Damn it James--Stop pushing narrow minded unreflective anti-intellectual assessments (also called bigotry) by fear mongers!! Heck, show some intellectual honesty with well-balanced, deeply considered views on the subject such as that provided by the best AI in the world Super Grok. Super Grok assesses that "Historically, technologies have displaced jobs in certain sectors but ultimately created more—and often higher-paying—ones overall, by boosting productivity, economic growth, and demand for new skills...Evidence suggests AI is following a similar pattern: while it is displacing some jobs, particularly routine or repetitive ones, it appears to be creating at least as many new, often high-paying opportunities in the long term, though short-term disruptions are real and unevenly distributed." Super Grok also highlights that well-considered assessments by diverse groups such as the World Economic Forum (yes, I also hate their politics but that does not mean their economic assessments are incorrect), the the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Labor Organization (ILO), Goldman Sachs, Brookings Institution, and Price Waterhouse Cooper (PwC) Global AI Jobs Barometer all conclude that AI will have a net positive impact on jobs, including increased wages!!!! I wish to highlight that you could not have a more diverse group of thinkers looking at this subject. Super Grok concludes "The weight of evidence from economists, think tanks, and real-time observations leans toward AI creating at least as many jobs as it destroys, particularly high-paying ones in emerging fields like AI engineering, healthcare analytics, and strategic consulting. This mirrors historical patterns, where net job growth occurs through productivity gains and new demand. Do not trust me. Do the Grok AI query yourself and get even more details. My exact wording was "Is artificial intelligence (AI) replacing human employment overall or is AI creating at least as many high paying jobs as it is destroying which is the way technology has always worked in the past?"

Please also note that the press will always highlight and even hype the inevitable displacement of some workers by AI, but the slow, inevitable increase in employment in other areas just does not generate clicks so is not reported but is food through careful research. Economists like David Autor note that 60% of current occupations didn't exist 80 years ago, suggesting AI will invent entirely new categories, but that is not going to create flashy headlines.

Quantum Alpha

Yessssss!!! I watched that too. I hadn’t heard of him before but he’s been in the AI safety space for something like 40 years?! That was an amazing interview. Highly recommend it. 🔥

I agree, it’s nothing but fear-mongering. The economy is built on what humans want, not on what machines can do. Even if AI takes 99.9% of all work, the remaining 0.1% becomes the entire economy, and everything else is just productivity gains. James is against a big state, but AI fear-mongering leads to a growing state.

For completeness sake, I also want to point out that Hinton no matter how smart he might be about AI is an economic ill-literate. He is a self-described socialist which demonstrates his anti-scientific stupidly when it comes to economic issues as socialism has never produced wealthy societies only mass poverty and political tyranny and terror--just look at North Korea, Cuba, and the former Eastern Europe.

Chewie

Yep, correct. Invest so we (& our dependents) aren't subject to whims and controls or UBI and Social credit system

Alexis

An AI scientist commenting on economic outcomes and falling for economic fallacies. This always happens when people assume their expertise in one domain translates to another.

Adam Toth

Fair point, but economists don't understand the technology and its impact. Nobody knows what percentage of jobs will be made more efficient vs replaced, by what factor they will be more efficient, what other jobs will be created and how many, what qualifications will the new jobs require, how fast this will be adopted by legacy companies, etc. Everyone is just guessing at this point.

Adam Toth

The bottleneck will be training people for new jobs. Most countries have barely any capacity for adult education and many adults can barely learn new things. Anyone who can and does learn on their own is not in trouble anyway.

Bring on UBI and the age of abundance. People can spend more time with loved ones, pursue their passions and find their true purpose or just do hobbies that fulfill them. It beats doing jobs that cause stress, poor eating habits and general unhappiness that wrecks our health. Sure some people will become unhinged and will need help but in the age of abundance options for help will also be abundant.

Keep investing to stay ahead

Did I not just say this the other day on another post you had? I guess my tinfoil hat theories are coming to fruition. Hence my skepticism yet on bitcoin and crypto--what do the actual laws written by our governments say? Why is Buffet still sitting on billions and not putting it into the crypto market? Is crypto just another Wall Street scam to steal middle class wealth? SMH. 🤷🏻‍♂️

ActionMan

Oh, right. Buffet is the ONLY idiot not in crypto.... yet somehow he's the smart one?? Hmm. Maybe not.

Chuck3Putt

The fear of UBI is that you will be given a subsistence living. Yes, hobbies costs will drop, but I would bet that most will have to be very selective with those dollars. I don't see people golfing every day on UBI. I sincerely hope that I am wrong on this.
