Google just released a powerful AI tool, called Nano Banana (officially Gemini 2.5 Flash Image), that can do many of the same things Adobe’s software does—but for free. Instead of paying Adobe $50 or more every month, people can now edit photos or create images in seconds just by typing in simple instructions like “make the shirt plaid” or “add a sunset behind this person.”

Why This Matters
Adobe makes most of its money by charging millions of people a monthly subscription for Photoshop, Illustrator, and other tools. That adds up to over $13 billion per year. But Nano Banana completely undercuts that business because:

  1. It’s Free and Easy

    • Adobe tools are expensive and hard to learn, often requiring months of training.

    • Nano Banana is free, instant, and requires no training. Anyone can type a sentence and get pro-level results.

  2. Professional Results Without the Hassle

    • Adobe’s strength was always that only trained professionals could achieve polished results.

    • Nano Banana makes those same results available to anyone—students, small businesses, influencers—at zero cost AND IN SECONDS WITH NO TRAINING!

  3. Google’s Reach Is Massive

    • Adobe has around 30–37 million subscribers.

    • Google has billions of users across Search, YouTube, and Android. Nano Banana is built right into that ecosystem, making adoption effortless.

  4. Market Shift Toward AI

    • The future of content creation is AI-driven, fast, and accessible and super easy to use. All you need to do is ask.

    • Adobe’s software feels old-school by comparison: complex menus, heavy apps, and incremental AI add-ons hidden behind a paywall.

The Outcome
Adobe won’t vanish overnight, but the cracks are showing. Subscriber growth has already slowed. As more people switch to free tools like Nano Banana, Adobe’s revenue could fall by billions. Eventually, Adobe may survive only as a niche tool for ultra-high-end professionals or enterprises, while Google dominates everyday creative work. I will be ready for another big short when the time is right.

AI HITTING ALL AT ONCE
This isn’t just competition—it’s disruption. Just like smartphones killed digital cameras, Google’s Nano Banana could kill Adobe’s Creative Suite. Adobe’s reign as the king of creative software is on borrowed time.

pixel level control is not there yet with AI. When you are working for a client/director they will have very detailed adjustments. It will be coming though.

Open Source everything! I'm a Linux user and Gimp does pretty much what Photoshop does, and again it's free.

Small & new design business never had a choice, now they do this & FIGMA & CANVA - this cannot be good for Adobe long term.

Just like Canva is a threat to Adobe? Has anyone actually tried to use Canva, it totally sucks

PDF files though are pretty much entrenched worldwide. Never used photoshop, I pay my sub for PDF editing. Use it pretty much every day, and I’m pretty sure PDF is proprietary to Adobe, no?

Truth! Horrific. And btw Groks imagine has the same functionality as that google thing. Actually I haven’t googled anything for months. I Grok everything.

I didn’t even realize google docs can do what acrobat and MS office suite can. Google docs has been almost free literally for decades. Yet it’s still not widely adopted in the corporate world. I’ve personally rarely used it.

I just tried nano bana. gave it a very simple task "remove circle" and it removed the circle and 2 lines and other unrelated parts.

Looks like Nano Banana is not free in the US. It let me alter one image for free then requires a subscription.
