TLDR

If your kids appear to have ADD or ADHD don’t need to be ‘fixed’ - do not ply them with drugs —they need to be engaged, challenged and excited. This could be in fact their superpower in tomorrow’s world.

Me

I’ve often thought that if I’d grown up in the U.S., I’d probably have been diagnosed with ADHD and drugged silly. In school, I was endlessly curious, never satisfied, always hungry for more—and I drove my teachers crazy. My grades were fine, but I found the whole process painfully tedious

Hence when I read this paper I could relate.... i did not have a disease but rather an advantage.

Proof of ADHD as an Advantage

A University of Pennsylvania study showed that individuals with ADHD traits outperformed others in an online berry-picking game. Their impulsivity and willingness to leave depleted patches for new ones led to higher overall resource gathering. This supports the idea that ADHD traits are adaptive survival strategies, especially valuable in hunter-gatherer contexts.

Genetic and Anthropological Evidence of Evolutionary Roots

A 2020 genomic study traced ADHD-associated alleles back tens of thousands of years, even to Neanderthals. Additionally, research on the Ariaal people of Kenya demonstrated that ADHD-linked genes are advantageous in nomadic societies (better nutrition, higher social standing) but disadvantageous in settled farming communities—clear evidence of environment-dependent value.

Mismatch Theory Validated in Modern Contexts

The findings reinforce the “mismatch theory”: ADHD isn’t a disorder but a trait adapted for survival in dynamic, high-risk environments. Think Stock Markets!!! Traits like hypervigilance, novelty-seeking, hyperfocus, and restlessness—once vital for hunting, protection, and exploration—become challenges in rigid, sedentary, modern systems (schools, offices). However, in fields like entrepreneurship, emergency response, creativity, and analytics, these traits remain highly advantageous. Hence I could not stand school or much of the 9-5 work envt....but alone I can sit for 16 hours straight noodling on a problem with barely as much as a bathroom break.

Flying Dutchman in US

Note from the researchers: However, they added the study had limitations, including that ADHD-like symptoms were based on self-report.

Sounds lile bullshit to me

Barbies-Evil-Twin

I was diag'd with Autism and ADHD a year ago at age 58. Explains a lot! Burned out of the corporate 9-5 over 25 years ago and now understand why. Biggest challenge is balancing the challenges vs the gifts of neurodivergence, but have lots of support in my life, and the gift of James & IA to help achieve financial freedom! 😍

Thank you James and IA team 🙏🍀👍👏

It depends on the situation and the overall interruption of functionality in your life. Granted, you may need a different life, but all kids tend to have a similar school life, and if it keeps them from passing tests, they all have problems. Treating ADHD in one of my kids was life changing in getting him through school, but when circumstances change later on in exit, then things may need a re-evaluation. If they are a “normal” or on the average functioning kid making it through school, I am definitely not for treatment. There is still definite excess treatment in the U.S.

I wonder what is the source , I wish he included the link to it

This is so encouraging my so. Was diagnosed with ADHD at 5yr- I decided not to go med route and now that he’s 14 and puberty set in he’s calmed down so much. I can see his gifts and he’s wicked smart with high IQ. I choose to focus on his strengths and I use routine and structure which works well for us!
