About 15 years ago, I was interviewing someone for a job. When I asked him about his salary expectations, he named a figure that was three times what I was making at the time. I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing—he was completely out of touch.

The salary figures originate from a September 2024 Empower survey of 2,203 U.S. adults conducted by Morning Consult.

Survey respondents across generations reported their current views on successful income levels. All amounts reflect 2024 dollars without adjustment for historical inflation. Baby Boomers' lower figure of $99,874 stems from their present-day aspirations, not past-era equivalents.

My gut tells me, these figures capture aspirational views shaped by today's economic landscape, where costs for essentials like housing and education have skyrocketed. However, the disconnect between these expectations and harsh realities for GenZ is likely to breed widespread disappointment in the younger generations.

I think even if they gain some $$ via the “success porn” route, they’ll earn it fast and loose it just as fast bc they either didn’t have to work hard for it and/or they won’t know how to manage it.

It already has. I had a medium sized business I recently sold. Managing young staff post covid became a nightmare. Pre-covid we had a system where we were transparent and showed staff after one year, your tittle changes to this and you get $10k extra, then the next year similar etc. it worked great, they could see the progression, they were going to open homes, looking at housing, aspirational behaviors. Post covid they’ve given up, before selling the company we were paying 40% more in salaries than pre covid, expecting 20% less in workload and had outsourced 3 positions to the Philippines and invested in software to allow this in terms of budget. But even with that wage jump, house and cost of living has smashed them, the kids can’t see themselves owning a home and are come across as hopeless and slightly resentful. I could see what my life would be like continuing to manage that and between them and legislation/ red tape I could not be bothered anymore so sold, now I just invest and run a way smaller business with a mate. I won’t hire staff again. I think the media landscape with Kardashians and crap on tv and instagram fake reality is warping their sense of realism.

This wont end well. Be afraid when people are starving and homeless. History thought us that. They will need to fix it.

Engineer with 10 to 15 years experience in some EU countries can't expect more than 30.000 euro net yearly salary. That's about 60.000 gross salary before taxes. So these numbers are unbelievable.

Gen Z and the next generations to come have to stop basing their income models on TikTok influencers…

ERic Hua

all these influencers telling Gen Z that they all can make millions with their own business or on only fans is throwing reality way off.

yeah, that's for the one out of a million genious data scientist, not the everyday folk.

They are already disappointed. The boomers voted good policies for themselves all throughout their life because they are the bigger cohort. This screwed the other generations.
